Kyle Ward (b. 1969) is the director of the social studies education program at St. Cloud State University. He worked as a high school teacher for many years, teaching a variety of subjects. He is a co-author (with Dana Lindaman) of History Lessons: How Textbooks from Around the World Portray U.S. History and the author of History in the Making: An Absorbing Look at How American History Has Changed in the Telling over the Last 200 Years and Not Written in Stone: Learning and Unlearning American History Through 200 Years of Textbooks, all published by The New Press.
This book adds so much to a classroom discussion with students about why textbooks only provide a single narrative and SHOULD NOT be the only source given to Ss. I’ve given my students the excerpts on the Trail of Tears and their first reaction is question the damage done to marginalized groups when the dominant culture perspective whitewashed history. This is a great book to #DisruptHistory!
It's obviously not a book you fall into reading since it's just a bunch of textbook selections, but it's an excellent collection of historical artifacts that point to why social studies educators should cast a wide net.
