Dreams of escape become his worst nightmare…

Minders, Book 2

Two years after Josh McKay captured escaped Minder Kiran Brunner, Josh’s life is in ruins. Desire had a hand in letting the beautiful monster sink psychic hooks into his will, and now he is essentially a prisoner of the agency, his every move watched for any hint of a connection that could lead to Kir.

Unable to stand by and let an amoral Minder destroy his lover, Kir extracts Josh from the agency’s compound and sweeps him away to a secluded cabin to heal. It’s just the two of them, Kir and Josh. Both wounded at the hands of the agency, both struggling to find the will to trust each other through the agency-induced barrier of hatred and fear.

Kir has all the patience in the world. What he doesn’t have is time. Whatever love they have rebuilt may be too fragile to withstand the future they face…

I'm giving all three virtually the same review because they're basically more of a serial novel than a series. You have to read all three in the series because the first two end in cliffhangers and they're short. Keep that in mind because the first two do not have an HEA/HFN. I'm someone who requires a happy ending, but it was okay, because I had the other books at hand, and I knew it would eventually turn out okay. The end really isn't an ending, it's very much the end of a section or chapter.

I love the world she's built. I read another book in this world before this one so I knew the answer to one secret that is actually not revealed in this book. But there's drama aplenty, lots of mortal danger and mayhem and intense emotion and I just eat that stuff up. It's like manna for me.

There's also not only a history of abuse, but in the first one, a rather graphic attempted rape scene that reads a little like an inaccurate BDSM story. (What I mean isn't that someone is chased down a dark alley and thrown behind a dumpster.) Angst pervades the books, too. God this stuff is so great. If you don't like melodrama, though, you'll probably hate this. But I like it. It's like she wrote it just for me.

This episode is 4.5 stars because it isn't the best M/M book ever written but it was very good. I'm rounding it up because I just love this kind of stuff and this was everything I wanted.

Ignore my raving fangirl-ing for this author. These books are just exactly what I want to be reading right now and they are making me crazy happy.

This one could have done a bit more with dealing through working through Josh's abuse? I feel like he got over it and was ready to be intimate with someone else VERY quickly. I don't think I would have been very receptive in that situation. But still, the role-reversal, with Kir taking care of Josh for once was just. @_@ Yes.

Dammit. This one has such great premise. Mind control and actual abuse/mindrape through it and all, but I just can't get into the writing. It feels meandering, contrived, and the characters show no real depth.

Pity, because there's so much you can read into it. I like to think, for example, that Kir is there out of an attempt to atone for his mistake. That he cares - but it's a shallow kind of care. Like thanks for saving me a seat care - and really only because Josh is the only person who sincerely liked him and he forms a connection by virtue of that alone.

Josh on the other hand: his feelings are ambiguous. That ambiguity could have been fun. Does he really like Kir, or is there mind control in play here? What if the only reason he likes Kir is because Kir is subconsciously making Josh like him?

But no, nothing like that happen. The book pushed too hard to make it seem all romantic and stuff, beaming these brick-thick hints that clearly Josh really likes Kir and mind control has got nothing to do with it. At the same time, it felt like nobody had any idea what they were feeling or knew what they were going to do. Suspended in a kind of does-he-does-he-not until BAM, SEX! BAM, 2D VILLAIN! BAM, plot device for yet another book!

Which is nice and all, but there was so much potential there and it's not like the storyline that the author DID choose to write shone under the choppy writing.

Meh.

Really gets me when a good idea is poorly executed. ):

Short: 4.5 Stars. H/C. Strong story, strong characters, leaves you wanting more.

What everyone else writes, is true, the minder trilogy has to be read in full, otherwise it is unsatisfying.
Nevertheless I feel this book is completely underrated. It's hurt/comfort (my favorite), and both parts are heartwrenching. It's impact on me was so strong that I felt sad and angry for the next day and couldn't get the story out of my head.

SPOILER This is rape of the worst kind, thankfully not in detail, otherwise I probably couldn't have finished. The comfort part is, imo, well written. The book is far from perfect. There's good comfort, and some kind of closure, but even together with the sequel too many things are brushed over that should have been explored more indepth (i.e. the relationship between Kir and Gabriel), but maybe that is part why the impact is so strong.

Recommended for H/C (MM, paranormal etc...) lovers

The second story is more on Josh's ordeal. Two years after he let Kir go to his family, Josh is in state of regression. Being the survivor of the Minder, he cannot trust his own decision, feeling that his mind has been controlled. He is a wreck. Then comes Brad, one of the Minder who manipulates him into sex. Now it's up to Kir to saves the man who has been kind to him. I LOVE the second story as well. Kir and Josh's relationship is wonderful with a touch of angst I love. I can't wait to read the conclusion.

I liked the books -- Monster, Zombie, Minder -- as a whole but wouldn't want to read them separately. They first two just cut off practically mid-sentence, and even the last one ends abruptly. Rather than a story arc, I felt like it was a story cliff -- climb climb climb then splat off the edge.
That said, I did like the story and wish she had written a #4 to finish off Kir and Josh's story.
