During her brief life (1774-1821) she was a successful wife, mother, teacher. Seton was also founder of the Sisters of Charity, and is the first native-born American saint of the Roman Catholic Church. All of her accomplishments flowed from the fact that she was first and foremost a woman of prayer. She expressed that spirit of prayer in her writings, meditations, reflections, prayers, poems and songs, written for herself, her friends, and for her religious community.
