David Commins examines the debate on the nature of Wahhabism and offers original findings on Wahhabism's ascendence in Saudi Arabia and spread throughout other parts of the Muslim world such as Afghanistan and Pakistan. He discusses the development of links to Arab and South Asian religious reform movements in the late nineteenth century and how they contributed to an alliance with modern revivalist organisations such as The Muslim Brothers in the late twentieth century. After Wahhabism's most zealous impulses were suppressed in the 1920s by King Abdul Aziz, it became part of the modern kingdom's bureaucratic apparatus. Commins argues that Wahhabi clerics used government bodies to consolidate authority - especially in law and education. Commins assesses the challenges that Wahhabism faces from the popularity of modern Islamic revivalism that has fuelled radical militants such as Osama Bin Laden who call for the overthrow of the Saudi classes which have always enjoyed the blessing of the Wahhabi establishment. The Wahhabi Mission and Saudi Arabia is essential reading for anyone interested in the Middle East and Islamic radicalism today.

كتاب قيّم يأخذك في رحلة ممتعة من بداية الحركة الاصلاحية وتقلباتها مع الدول السعودية الثلاث .. تخرج بنتيجة في نهاية الكتاب ان المؤلف يريد القول ان " الوهابية "لا تشكل تهديد للغرب فخصومها هم المسلمين وأن التهديد يأتي من الاخوان المسلمين .. كتاب يستحق الإقتناء بجدارة

يطرح الكتاب مسار زمني للدعوة الوهابية و علاقتها بالدولة السعودية فبدأ بنجد إبان الدعوة الوهابية ثم بدايات الدعوة و ردة الفعل حولها في نجد و علاقتها بالعالم الإسلامي و الحملات العثمانية ضدها و ضد كيانها السياسي و صراعات ساستها بين بعضهم البعض و بينهم و بين الآخر و دور الملك عبدالعزيز في فرض السيطرة على الوهابية و كبح حماسها و ترويضها ثم مكانتها و دورها في الدولة الحديثة و الفكر الإسلامي و نزعات الإحياء الإسلامي و علاقتها مع الوهابية و تحدياتها بعد أزمة احتلال الحرم من قبل جهيمان و ظهور النزعة الجهادية و الانشقاق بينها و بين دعاة إحياء الاهتمام الديني
الكتاب لم يأخذ منحى نقدي و إنما تأريخي و استعمل الكاتب مصادر نجد التاريخية ذات الصلة بالتاريخ السعودي و السلفي و هذا ما زاد موضوعية الكاتب
أنصح بهذا الكتاب لمن يريد التعرف بدايةً على الوهابية و تاريخها ففيه الكثير من النفع

Well-written, with lots of background for those coming into the study with zero knowledge. The text is a bit dense in places, but highly readable, though the glossary could use some expansion.

كتاب شيق و دقيق. انصح به لأي شخص لا يحمل المعلومات الكافية عن الوهابية و تاريخ السعودية المعاصر. يحمل الكثير من التفاصيل، نقدي له لاحظت ان الكاتب يتعاطف مع الوهابية نوعا ما.

سرد موضوعي لأحداث تاريخية لكن طريقة السرد مملة نوعًا ما، يفترض على الكاتب-المترجم إدراك حقيقة أن الأسلوب سبب رئيسي لاقتناء الكتب والاستفادة منها.
