Freewill is a Young Adult slipstream novel that embodies both science fiction and dark fantasy, with strong paranormal romantic overtones. Within its pages a world comes to life, where mythology is real and evident in humanity's interaction with the ethereal Others. Ellie, once a human but now an Other (an empathic creature surviving in a fugue state, inside the otherworldly veil for over sixty years,) has been finding the strength to exist through her compulsion to be a muse; that is, until she meets Christopher. Christopher, a present day young man with the special talent to foresee the truth of the intangible Others, quickly becomes Ellie's heart's desire. Ellie and Christopher inevitably find themselves developing an unusual relationship, where touching one another can only happen in Christopher’s dreams. Unbeknownst to them, ever since Ellie's birth in 1922, destiny's hand, guided by mythical forces and fairytale lineage, has been pushing them into each other's embrace, while also potentially into the arms of evil Others called the Timoro, and into the sights of dangerous feuding organizations-- the Symboulio: the council of the ancient and divine, and the Symbio: the new world council of acceptance.

In this first book of the trilogy, the readers start to understand that Ellie’s transformation into an Other as an empath is exceptionally rare; only happening one additional time, over 2,000 years ago. Finally awakened by Christopher’s presence, if she does not build a connection to lessen the burden of feeling the world’s emotions she will cease to exist. Delving into a mixture of historical events, mythical manifestations, and folklore, the setting provides glimpses into familiar images that lull the reader into believing they know what may happen next … but that doesn't account for Free Will.

Some scholars say: when it comes to decision making, humans are the sum of their experiences and conditioning; thus freewill is an illusion.

While others say: when we are confronted by primal choices, the decisions that weigh heavily on our hearts, experience or destiny cannot predict the result … but our hearts can surmise the final outcome. When the judgment before us carries extreme perceived consequence, yet we still make the choice (whether resulting in action or inaction) -- that is freewill.

I hope you enjoy reading this story, as much as I enjoyed writing it. And I hope you can find your own definition of freewill along the way.

Well, well, encountered feelings toward this book that ended up in a very good sentiment.

I say this because at the beginning I honestly wasn't sure what I was reading, each chapter talking about different people and things that didn't seem to connect at all but then as the story develops I understood a little bit more and the ending really gave closure to those loose ends that were bugging me. And it was like OMG!

The story goes around two main characters that are Ellie and Christopher, both have complex personalities and some personal baggage that make them incredibly appealing as protagonists.
But there are many other characters, not as important but entirely interesting as well, such as Ann and James, our green eyes bad guy or Lune (the most incredible dog I've ever read about!) He is just A- MA - ZING!
As weird as it sounds, the dog is probably my favorite character in the whole book!
You'll understand what I mean if you read it.

Anyway, my feelings went up and down, I laughed with them but also felt their sadness. At one point my heart just shattered! And the end... oh that end! What will happen next???

The plot is completely ORIGINAL and left me wanting to know MORE!
Luckily I have the second and third book in the trilogy to satisfy my curiosity! YAY!

Title: Freewill
Author: Elyse Draper
Genre: YA, Paranormal Dark Fantasy with some Romance
Ebook: 4377 about 250 pgs
Series: First of Three

I finished Freewill a few days ago but wanted to read all three before I wrote the review. I love that I didn’t have to hang on a cliff hanger for very long all I had to do was go to the next book. Love that!!

The plot was unique and the story was well written, no errors that I can remember of. The story is unlike anything I have read recently and can’t say enough how good it was. It’s very nice to have come across something different and this good.

The story is about Ellie and Christopher, both with special abilities but only one of them so far that can go from our world into another world that is parallel to ours. But enough of that the books synopsis explains it better.

I liked Charlie but loved Christopher! I believe in sole mates and love at first sight. So I loved her concept about sole mates.

And what story would be complete without the evil character and boy did this one have bad/evil characters. James - psychopath, “V”- demented Aztec Priest, Esidor demented Nazi Soul Sucking General, The Symboulio – brainwash organization, The Timoro – revolting repulsive horrid nasty malevolent merciless killers. I think I covered most of the evil ones.

A little different and confusing in the beginning but hang in there it all comes together at the end and its well worth it. With plenty of twists and turns I didn’t want to put it down, but sleep won at the end. Fast past story (once you get past 1/3 of the book) that I recommend to any age group. If you like fantasy you will like Freewill.

I received this book from the author for an honest review. I signed up for this book but didn't have very high expectation. And the beginning was a little confusing to keep up with. But this book ended up quite good, and I cannot wait to finish the trilogy.

First I have to talk about the end! I only had 10 or so pages left and was thinking this is a such a bittersweet ending, but I was happy for a few of the characters. THEN on the very last page that all was ruined! I was just so shocked by what happened on this last page and couldn't believe it! Now, do not go read the last page to see what I am talking about. Read it from the beginning.

This book is told from a few different povs. The beginning was a little harder to keep track of, but it all ties together as the story progresses. There is still a lot of mystery left unanswered after it ends, but that's what makes me excited to start with the next book. This story is mostly about Christopher, Ellie and James. I like to compare it to Christopher being the live person and Ellie and James are like the angel and devil on his shoulders. It was really a lot of good side/bad side with these two. And there was a very sweet, new romance in the works that almost brings you to tears in the end and is where the bittersweet comes in.

I do not want to give anything away, and you can read what the book is about in the book description. I will say, though, that I really enjoyed this book I highly recommend it! Great introductory book to what I hope is a wonderful series!

This is the first book in a trilogy and it sets everything up perfectly. The author is a brilliant story teller who immediately sucks the reader into the story and keeps them glued to the pages from beginning to end. You will find yourself caring about every single character very quickly and at times you will want to hug them and at other times you may wish you could reach in the pages and give them a bit of a swat upside the head! I won't give the story away, but there are a lot of twists and turns within that will leave you on the edge of your seat and right when you think you figured it out, you will realize you really didn't.

This book has a very unique concept and the author delivers a perspective on the world that hasn't been seen before. This book sets up the first of a trilogy that, if the other two follow the same pattern, promises to deliver a brilliant and entertaining reading experience and one that should not be missed by serious readers of all ages. Extremely fun and entertaining read and one that left me eager to get to the next in the series!

I thoroughly enjoyed reading "Freewill." The plot was original and the characters were easy to relate to. The paranormal aspect of the book was full of refreshing twists unlike recent books in this genre. It was good to read something that hasn't been rehashed over and over again like other authors do these days. No vampires or zombies here and that is great! Elyse does a great job of giving her characters life. The character James was creepy and in some ways he reminds me of someone I used to know; in fact, the similarities were uncanny and frightening. I am definitely looking forward to the next installment in this series -- keep up the great work, Elyse!

7 out of 5 stars. Goodreads should really provide more than five stars. This is an excellent read for everyone!

This was the most vivid story I've ever read! Its perfectly detailed-setting,characters, etc. As if I was really there and experiencing what Ellie did. Characters are perfectly developed, the pacing was great, the plot was really one of a kind; not like an ordinary thing you can read nowadays. There were also great lessons along the way. Its really a package of a good book and I'm thankful that Ms. Draper gave me a copy even though the giveaway was closed. Thanks you Ms.Draper.

I really enjoyed reading this and I am so excited for the next part!

Over all, I really enjoyed this book. It's written for young adults. So, it is romance minus the "good stuff", as those who, like me, enjoy erotica might see it. However, the storyline, characters, and world that Elyse Draper creates in this book are engaging enough to keep even my perverted mind interested.

The book ends with such a cliff hanging that, if I did not already have the second and third book in the serious waiting on my Kindle to be read, I might would be annoyed with how little is resolved by the book's end. So, if you're interested in reading this ghostly romance series go on ahead and get the Kindle version of the trilogy that has all three books in one.

If you are in the mood for a paranormal romance, a dark and angry villain, and a lot of fascinating twists and turns, then this is the book for you. Freewill offers the reader a chance to look at death in the face in a way that no other writer has taken on. The story of Ellie and Christopher will capture you right away and keep you turning from page to page. Awash in beautiful words and poetic passages, Elyse Draper's start to the Freewill Trilogy will keep you begging for more.

*I received this e-book through We Heart YA Books!*

This e-book was good... the kind of good that makes a reader wonder why this author isn't as well known as other popular young adult authors. The beginning was a little slow, but once I got to the meat of the book, I completely enjoyed it! Christopher and Ellie were so cute together and James made for a good "bad guy". Overall I enjoyed this book immensely especially for the surprise twist at the end! I would recommend this book to any female teen.

*Eminently Readable*!!! Beautifully crafted storytelling talent by "Elyse Draper"!!!

A wonderful-creative-[out-of-the-box]-love story.

Characters to love --
Fantasy to dream about--
Personal inner thinking about things in your own life....

Here is one of my favorite lines in the book:

"Social hierachy doesn't hold a candle to the power of feeling isolated in your own skin" [I know I sure can relate to this sentence].

Congrats *Elyse*!

Great book!

Freewill is a really good paranormal romance! Its hard to get into to much of the plot without giving it away! Freewill kept me wanting to know what was going to happen next! I will say I did get confused some because the story went from one point to the next and left you wondering and rereading just to see where some came into place, but about halfway through everything fell into place and turned out to be a wonderful read! Most definitely worth the read!! Looking forward to the next book!

Even before Elizabeth or Ellie was an infant, it was seen that she would be someone great in the mythical world. Her Uncle Edward, understanding the burden of knowing the magical world, he wished for Ellie not to know the truth, until she meets her soul mate.

Growing up, Ellie became a responsible teen, a loving daughter and a caring older sister to a twin. Little did the people around her knows the ability she hides. She could feel everyone's motions, and could her their thoughts when she touch them.

Though lives in London with her family, she loves to visit her Uncle Edward's farm. There he found love with her childhood friend Charlie. Then came Hitler and World War 1. Ellie died, but only physically.

For 70 years, Ellie wanders the world an an ethereal, helping people through her abilities. She helps grieving people lessen their suffering by taking away those they could give up and feel it for herself. Then she meet Christopher Ross. Like Ellie, he has the ability, but his ability is to detect and hear the truth beyond the lies. Being an ethereal, Ellie saw Christopher and with unknown reason, she felt a pull towards him. With Chris, she found out there are others like her, and one is after Chris and his abilities.

You might observe how unorganized my summary is. Yes, I admit that it is and I'm sorry. But this is also exactly what I'm thinking while reading the book. The story is a little bit scattered in my opinion. First, the title: "Freewill" I feel that the title is kind of forced. Forced in a way that I feel like that the author is trying to justify why she titled this book freewill throughout the story. In the end, I finally agree with the title, but without the help of redundant explanation of freewill in other parts of the book. Second is the story line; the book started with Edward, then Ellie's life, Charlie so on and so on. I was past half the story and I'm still frustrated on what's the story is really all about. There was the mythical creatures, faeries, banshees and all at the beginning, after that it jumped with Ellie's ability and then her lovelife with Charlie and after dying, Christopher. When it came to Christopher's part, that's where I think the story really got started, but can anyone tell me please what's really going on??? Good thing there are some bits of pieces from other characters that gives me some idea what this story is all about and some connections from what seems like totally different stories from the start. I just hope that the next book would clear a lot of things up.

Ellie and Christopher's love story is heart-wrenching. To love someone you could not physically see and hold except in your dreams made me cry for both of them. As I've said, the interesting part started when Chris was introduced, and it gets better and better page by page. I almost forgot my frustration I've written above...almost. Also, other than the story, the writing got better as well. At first, it feels so awkward reading the words, with the phrases like "condensation dripping from the roof," "the scent of ozone," and "rambunctious" I can't help but have a second look at the words..what was that again??? But when we reached the interesting part as I was saying, the words flowed naturally. I'm not against Ms. Draper's way of words in the beginning, maybe I'm just more comfortable with the latter :)

I totally fell inlove with Chris and Ellie's love story that I don't care about anything else. Now that I have written most of my frustrations about the book, I'm letting them go and just swoon over and day dream about their love. And no way will I forget Lune!!! I want someone exactly like him!!! Really!!! I tried talking to my dog if he would respond to me like Lune did to Chris and Ellie, and all I got was a blank stare then he continued sleeping... *sigh This book won't be that much interesting without this adorable guy. I could not even consider he's a dog, he does not act like one!

This is such a hard novel for me to put into words. Made even harder by the fact that I haven't quite made sense of everything yet. Freewill is definitely not your average paranormal novel. I'm still not quite sure where we're heading but that only excites me! What I am left with though is a million questions. I say that in a good way and I can't wait for the answers to unfold.

Like many others, I too had a difficult time starting this novel. For me, I found I had to be in the right mood before I could begin reading it. I think what made it difficult for me personally was how fast I was thrust into this world. The characters that were introduced overwhelmed me. There were just too many for me to keep track. The change in perspective was something that I was also trying to get accustom to. That all said, I found the story to be full of intrigue and layered with deep substance. The story was refreshing. The concept an interesting one. The characters 3-dimensional with the main protagonists Ellie and Christopher highly likeable. I love their relationship together. It was amazing to see how they each affected/influenced each other. The world building was intriguing and very vivid. I love the way Elyse Draper writes. She definitely has a way with words.

Many thanks to We ♥ YA Books! and Elyse Draper for the opportunity to read this book! In exchange for their kindness is this honest review.

I also wanted to add the meaning of freewill somewhere in this review. I found this on the author's review of Freewill and it helped me gain an even better perspective of the story.

"Some scholars say: when it comes to decision making, humans are the sum of their experiences and conditioning; thus freewill is an illusion.

Author has provided review copy from Smashwords via We ♥ YA Books in exchange for my fair, honest, and authentic review-copy provided August 21, 2012.

Freewill is the first in the trilogy by the same name, an unusual and complex metaphysical exploration of the world “beyond” the perception of most, and the many divergent ways in which we humans are affected by it. Although it commences in early 20th century England (approx. 1920) and moves to events of 1940 during the Nazi blitz of London, for me the book really got underway with the contemporary story of eighteen-year-old Christopher Ross of Golden, Colorado, a boy who finds computers and drafting simple as pie, yet with his dyslexia struggles to read. Christopher is a solitary with a special talent: tritely put, he is a “human lie detector.” He can read what an individual is actually thinking, while he or she is speaking something else.

Lately Christopher has been mentally plagued by an entity named James, who is deceased but yet not a ghost. James is purely evil, but his mentor V is much worse. Then Christopher’s life is uprighted when another “Other,” Ellie, appears-it is she who was born in 1920, concealed from an evil society by her uncle Edward, who was himself a seer, and died in 1940, just before her eighteenth birthday. As an Empath, she has spent her life-and afterlife-helping others. Now as she discovers Christopher, she and he both fall unwillingly in love.

Author Elyse Draper has a lyrical and poetic imagination and brings the many locales to vivid reality. Her view of afterlife is also unusual, but logical (if it’s appropriate to call spirit entities a logical progression). The rollercoaster ups and downs of emotions Ellie, Christopher, and the secondary characters go through is easily comprehensible, and more than one tear will be brought to readers’ eyes. Christopher certainly is in line for becoming one of the higher pantheon of young male protagonists.

Elyse Draper says that her New Adult* novel ‘Free Will’ is a paranormal romance. I’d like to say that it is a dark fantasy, but this fantasy has quite a balance of dark and light. ‘Free Will’ is the first part of a trilogy; it follows Ellie and Christopher, and their time-defying love story. Each is different from the crowds around them; Ellie because she can feel people’s emotions and influence them; Christopher because he can read people’s innermost secrets. James is the bad guy of the story; he can torture people with his mind. Lune is a dog, a husky to be precise, and Christopher’s best friend, and maybe more. There is also Ann, in Las Vegas, who has put her past behind her and started her life anew. Or tried to, but James can be a persistent being. There is more to the world that what can be seen with physical eyes, that what can be heard by physical ears. And secret organisations in the background, biding their time. This thoughtful, and almost philosophical, novel is written like a spell. Readers will be entranced by the Colorado scenery, the wanderings of the characters and their wonderings, the Faery-tale feel of this storytelling. *New Adult is an American genre between Young Adult and General Fiction.

This is a really difficult book for me to review. Honestly, I really did enjoy this book. . . but when you are at 30% of the story still wondering ” what the heck is going on” . . . you’ve got to admit it makes it a difficult book to rate. The story was intriguing, the characters extremely interesting but I have to say that now that I finished it I’m still not 100% sure where this story is heading. I also would like to explain about the characters but I’m afraid if I do give any kind of summary I will be creating a spoiler. There are dead people who aren’t really dead, mystical powers, really awesome dog protectors, and evil character...and they really are pure evil. All in all, I’m giving Freewill 4 stars. I am looking forward to the next book and hoping for a little more enlightenment.

It's hard to just tell a little about this book. And very easy to give away too much.I enjoyed this fantastical romance written for the young adult. The language flows with the intensity of finding, loving and losing one's true love. And there is the fairy tale element of waking the sleeping beauty(although in this case the beauty is a young man). And the star crossed lovers are pursued by evil entities, so there is the element of the paranormal with more than a nod to the elemental spirituality of Native Americans.
If it sounds complicated,it is.And intriguing, and good fun.It is the first in a trilogy. it will be interesting to see how the adventure plays out.

'Amazing, exciting and different.' FREEWILL was cleverly devised into a heart-pounding story with soulmates and love in the air. I loved Elizabeth Tickle (the main protagonist in the story) from the start till the end. She was a fun and serious character, neither this or that, with her creative streak flying about, I knew this story was going to be gripping-onto-the edge book. Elyse Draper has written a Goodread!

I had a hard time getting into the book at first. There was just to many characters and it kept jumping around. I felt lost in most of the beginning. Once I was able to get through the beginning I was able to really enjoy it. I did find myself wondering what was going to happen next. You start to wonder what will become of the characters you have begun to care about. I am starting the 2nd book called Consequences today.

Disclaimer: I received an ebook copy of this book from the author, Elyse Draper (Thank you very much), in exchange for an honest review. All opinions are my own and is not influenced by anything or anyone.

Freewill has a unique and interesting story, certainly one I haven't read before. But I got confused between the transition from the first part to the second part that I had to skim back and forth to make sure I understood it right. The first part is set in the late 1800s while the rest of the story is set in our current time. Admittedly, I was lost for a few chapters but kept on reading in hopes that it would make sense to me over time. And it did.

The story focuses on the romance between Ellie and Christopher, although their relationship is a unique case because Ellie died during the London bombing in the late 1800s. She is not a ghost but a different entity that can help lonely or grieving people cope. When she was still living, she had an ability to feel other people's pain through touch, or just by being near them.

Christopher, as mentioned in the book, is a very perceptive person. An evil entity named James has been bothering him for a while before Ellie followed him home from school. After a while, Ellie realized that he can sense her, hear her somehow, and it amplified when she touched him. They developed a relationship and fell in love with each other.

A large portion of the book was about the two of them figuring out who James is and how to get rid of him. At this point I was still confused because the beginning of the book was about Fey and the importance of Ellie. It wasn't discussed anywhere in the book after part 1, which makes me think that we will only find out if we read the next 2 books.

I liked the romance part of the book even though it seems like a hopeless case. I was surprised with the ending and as much as I don't want it to end that way, I'm sure it would make up a good sequel.

A surprising novel!

To be honest, for a long time, I was wondering where the author was going. Where he wanted to take me by telling me the different stories about the past of the characters. The transition between the fairies and the heroes 's abilities took some time to make its way in my head. This disrupted a little my reading.

Then, at Christopher's and Lune's arrival, the narrative text took a different dimension. My confusion gave away to anticipation and curiosity. So, I immersed myself avidly in my reading about who from James or Ellie would have the last word in this war.

After closing this book, I still had many questions. But I was also taken by surprise by the last lines with an amazing twist in the plot that excited me. It is with pleasure and much anticipation that I will soon begin the tome 2: Consequences

Impossible to review this book without revealing too much of the story. For sure, the reader plunges into a magical world where good and evil fight to maintain a certain balance.
Ellie comes from a family with supernatural powers. But her own abilities have been amplified and become stronger when she has died and come into contact with Christopher. This young shy and troubled man manages to stir up some memories and emotions that the girl thought never be able to revive.

A beautiful love story wonderfuly told with gentleness and poetry.

A great discovery !

Spoiler Alert:
Freewill is essentially about a couple falling in love one of them living and the other a spirit or "ghost", both with perceivable cognitive powers. I received this book, the first of a trilogy by the author for review through the We ♥ YA Books, ARR program. The story is quite original and the characters are honest. The storyline begins one way and then suddenly goes in completely different direction although be it interesting, it does take an open mind to embrace all the different concepts that the author is trying to convey. I found the story confusing and eventually I had to put the book down then start over. I want to thank the author for the opportunity to read this trilogy, now that I have the storyline established in my head I look forward to reading the second book and follow Christopher and Ellie's story.

I have a hard time rating this book. The beginning was confusing and hard to get into. I found the relationship between Ellie and Charlie rushed and because of that unbelievable. And switching between characters was very confusing. I would rate the beginning a 2 or a 3.

And then we met Christopher. He is a very strong character, and I loved how he thought he was dumb even though he found difficult things easy. And the relationship between him and Elli was believable and very moving. The story line between them was so good and original, I couldn't put the book down. The middle and end of the of the book deserves a 4 or even a 5.

All in all it is a great read!

I enjoyed the majority of this book, the story about Ellie and Christopher, but I felt myself confused often. I felt the book jumped around and it would take me a bit to figure out how everything was fitting together. I loved Ellie and reading about her, but I am still left confused about exactly what happened during parts of the book. Maybe it was too paranormal for me, or it was the characters that were introduced but not completely explained....yet? Maybe if I was able to read this in one sitting it would have been clearer. I hope book two will clear up some of my confusion!
