For decades Alistar Keirnan was ridiculed as a madman and a heretic, until the old warrior finally fell before the might of a powerful mage whose identity was never known. Decades later, Alexi, son of Alistar, has become House Father of the mightiest noble House in the Sarvek Empire. He is the Hand of the Emperor and lord of Bladespire. As such, he commands every soldier and sailor serving in the Imperial military.
Stories filter into High Court, rumors of a terrible warlock who preys on border villages. Convinced that he may finally meet the man who murdered his father, Alexi hunts the Warlock with unwavering determination. He does not know that soon he will face choices that will reveal him to be more like his father than anyone could have ever guessed.
Full disclosure: I've known the author as an online acquaintance for some years and have known of this novel for quite some time.
I finally got to read it this week - and it did not disappoint. There's enough magic, danger, bloodshed, betrayal, mysterious goings-on, politicking and underhanded dealings all around to satisfy everyone. Especially noteworthy is the portrayal of strong female characters, which I find sorely lacking in most works of fantasy and science fiction.
The one real flaw I find with it is that it was a much larger work split into two parts for publication purposes, and the narrative pace suffers for it somewhat. It's stillb a good introduction to the world of the Sarveki Empire.
