This read more like a series of essays rather than a cohesive novel, and I enjoyed it quite a lot. I would love to know what created Bernhardt's magic, and the sad thing about stage performances is that when the people who saw them are no longer with us, so go the memories.

Fictionalized biography of Sarah Bernhardt, renowned French actress. Neglected by her courtesan mother, Sarah makes her way in the world living by her motto "In spite of everything."
