As I read this stretched out upon my couch with one cat at my feet, another nuzzling my neck, all of us wonder -- how exactly did cats survive but not humans? This story sets up the premise well -- what if all the humans died and cats were on their own -- but that's all it does. It doesn't answer any of the obvious questions of how it happened or what came next. Not even an explanation of Bast for the majority of readers who may not immediately recognize this abbreviated reference to Bastet the Egyptian goddess of warfare depicted with the head of a cat.
