Interesting little book on the issue of translations of Bible and the problems encountered by the translators.
Naturally the translators were mostly the missionaries and they had to be very careful and doubly cautious before translating a Biblical phrase. Or else they would fall into great mistakes, often resulting in the nature of heresy. There are many interesting episodes given by the author to explain the problems.
For instance: In Bambora language (one of the African dialects) the translation of the word 'REDEEM' is interesting. "God Redeemed Us" would have to be rightly translated as "God took Our Heads Away." What is the reason? In those days when the Arab traders took many of the men from that region for the 'slave market' their necks had iron caps and they were connected to the iron caps of the others in the line with an iron chain. And a person wanting to relieve any one of them had to pay the necessary amount to the Arab trader who then would take that particular person's head off the vicious iron vice. That was the redemption.
There are many such interesting episodes.
I read the book in one sitting this afternoon.
