Shayna's first surfing session of the summer is interrupted by the screams of a mother who has lost her little boy in the water. Without regard to her own safety, Shayna swims out, rescues the boy, but must escape the clutches of something far worse than she could have ever imagined – mermaids.Compelled to answer the sirens' call, the boys of Shayna's town are drawn to the sea, but when they return are afflicted by an unknown illness, a sickness which is draining them of their life force. Unable to tell anyone about the mermaids, Shayna and her friends are forced to solve the mystery before it's too late, and in doing so, Shayna will finally have to face the full force of her powers. Whether she’s ready or not, she will have to face her true nature.
Like so many other writers, Shauna grew up as an avid reader, but it was in high school that she realized she wanted to be a writer. She released the first installment of her Paranormal YA Series, The Elemental Series, Earth, on May 1, 2011 and has since released four sequels, with the series coming to an end with Spirit. In December of 2013 she release the first in her Paranormal Post-Apocalyptic trilogy, World of Ash. She is currently hard at work on one too many projects, trying to organize the many voices in her head. It's a writer thing.
Water is the third book in The Elemental Series. Oh man as this series progresses the stories get better and better. I just could not out this book down and at the end I said I needed more!
In Water school is out and the summer is just beginning and the gang is ready to enjoy their summer drama free but evil has another plan for them. While Shayna is getting her surfing lessons on she hears the screams and cries of a mother who is losing her son to the water Shayna jumps right into action and saves the boy. But while she is saving the boy she comes head to head with a mermaid. Shayna is not sure what to do and so she tells Jodi and Steven and they together must find a way to defeat these evil mermaids.
As the Siren's call to the boys of the town to the water they are returning home with and illness that is draining all of their life source out of them. Shayna realizes that they are going to have to step up the game if they want to save the boys of the town. As the mermaids get more brazen in their actions Shayna is finally coming to turns with her true nature and her true powers and she will have to pull out everything she has to defeat these monsters and save the boys.
Will Shayna embrace her true self to save the boys? Or will she turn the other direction and ignore what she knows is her real self? What will happen to all the boys of the town? Will the mermaids win? You will just have to read this book to find out!
I think these books get better as the series progresses. Shay and her two elemental sidekicks have to unravel a mystery of a strange sickness that has affected a couple young boys in town. Shayna has an encounter with what appear to be mermaids, only more vicious. They must call upon power greater than they ever have before to battle this new threat.
I am glad to see Granger is getting bolder with her stories. This latest installment in the elemental series is the most dark, gritty, graphic, and explicit story in the series. Shayna’s relationship with Jensen escalates as far as what Granger is willing to show of it. The action sequences are more daring than the two previous novels. There is actual fighting and graphic descriptions of the violence.
I was also glad to see the other members of Shayna’s group do some cool things as well. I was disappointed with how little Jodi’s role in the second one was but she really comes into her own in this story. Steven is still a bit useless but he does step up a bit also.
If you have been following the series, this one will please you tremendously. If you are new to this series, you probably could start with this one and not be too lost. If you like paranormal teen stories, check this one out.
If you like elemental magic this is the perfect series for you. I have been reading this series from the beginning and it is so consistently good. I love how each book focuses on a different element. At first, I was a little confused because none of the three main characters are a water elemental. But I absolutely loved the plot line for Water. I thought it was super cool how everything was incorporated and it really made me want to read the original little mermaid story. (and don't go jumping to conclusions thinking there are mermaids all over the place. You won't know the connection without reading Water :p)
Shayna just keeps getting stronger and stronger power wise, but the thing that I really like about her is that she never lets it go to her head. She is very grounded. (get it? because she is the earth elemental? haha) but seriously, she is the anchor for the three friends and I love their dynamic. They get into little fights, but they are good enough friends that they can call each other out when they are being petty and they can just move on. This was not the case in the first book. I have really enjoyed watching all the characters grow.
As you can tell from the title, this book deals with water creatures. There are tons of awesome fight scenes. I really liked that Shayna, Jodi and Steven could call on their elementals to heal themselves. So for instance, Shayna would bury herself in the earth and it would heal her. That was a pretty unique power to me that I have not seen in most witch books.
One thing that bugged me about Water was the relationship between Shayna and Jenson. Specifically, how she treated him. I just felt so bad for him. She never really let him into her life. I had the same problem in the last book too. I was dissapointed that he wasn't in Water too much and then at the end he kind of just faded into the background and we have no idea what is going on with him or what the status of their quasi relationship is. Jenson is just so sweet and loyal and I felt for him. I hate to say this, but if Shayna isn't going to treat Jenson better, then she doesn't deserve him.
Water is a great installment in the elemental series. The creatures are creepy and my favorite yet! I thought the story line (which I am not going to reveal to you) is super interesting and riveting. Magic lovers should check out Water and the elemental series by Shauna Granger.
Shayna and her friends are elemental witches. They use the power of the earth, fire, and air to aid them in working their spells. They are not conventional witches, they can often harness the power without the incantations of normal witches. This book explores the element of water. An element that they do not harness.
Shay is called into action while she is surfing at the beach. A small boy is missing. She helps the mother locate the boy by swimming in the direction the mother pointed to her. What she discovers in the water was unexpected. They boy has been taken by mermaids. The mermaids in the story are not the mermaids from Disney. I would liken them more to the wicked octapus, Ursula.
I liked that in this story, the elementals are able to tap into the resources of a local coven. They realize their inabilitly to protect the people on their own. There are many questions answered about the source of their power. Questions that I didn't know existed.
I missed the playful and flirty nature of the main characters. In this book it was more action and less fun.
This book has elements that I would not recommend to a reader under 17. There is human intimacy and violence.
⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ Water is where the series really starts to shimmer. The introduction of sirens and their dark allure adds a rich, mythological depth to the magical world. The idea of boys falling under their spell and returning sick is eerie and well executed. Shayna becomes more self-aware here, her powers deepening as she starts to grasp just how connected she is to the natural world. The mystery is tightly woven, and the pacing keeps the tension flowing like a tide that won’t let up. The writing feels more confident and immersive. The ocean scenes are vivid, the stakes are personal, and Shayna’s growth is tangible.
I received this book as part of the YA Bound Book Tour. School has ended and they are all hoping that the excitement has died down enough to enjoy a relaxing summer. While on her first day of surfing Shayna is drawn to the screams of a hysterical mother because she can't find her her son Toby. Shayna heads into the water to search and finds the boy was taken by mermaids, but they aren't your typical mermaids. There are the mermaids of nightmares and Toby said that they called him into the water to play. She free's Toby and returns him to his mother however she seems to have drawn the attention of the mermaids because while getting ready to leave the beach she can see them out deep in the water watching her.
Shayna tells Jodi and Steven about her experience with the mermaids who agree they should look into it because they would hate to have another kid go missing. They don't know much about water elementals because neither of them really are water, but Shayna would the closest since she can control all of the elements. Since they all lack the information they need to figure out what's in the ocean the trio heads off to do research. The girls drag Steven to check out the beach and even get him into the water to see if the mermaids call to him, even though he's not thrilled. Steven like the little boy is drawn deeper into the water as if called by the mermaids, thankfully he has the girls to keep him safe. The trio heads off to find out more about the creatures in the water. As the story progress more boys go missing return as if drained of life and sick with a unknown illness. With the threat in the water as well as the red tide that's rolled in no one is safe in the water. Finding out how to save the boys from the creatures in the water will test them all to the brink changing their lives forever. To save the two boys the trio will need the help of Debs coven of witches since the trio is elementals.
I'm a huge water fan after all I am a pieces so of course this book called to me more then the first two. Totally didn't see Shayna as the surfing type but I think it fits the story well, and gives a good reason why they are checking out the water elementals. I found it interesting that when it comes to research the trio resorts to fairy tales, I really liked that aspect of the book. I was a little disappointed to see the relationship with Jensen is slowly starting to fade away, he's such a great guy and I think Shayna needs him to help ground her. I like they have their little bookstore where they can be who they really are and find all answers elemental. I also like how different the elemental magic is to your traditional magical powers from books. I found book three so far to be my favorite it's action packed a little more on the darker side then the first one but I like that aspect of it more. Overall I really like the series but I love book three, except for the whole Jensen issue maybe it will be fixed in the next book.
At the beginning of the story, Shayna saves a boy from the clutches of mermaids, or at least she is guessing they are mermaids. Since she isn't a hundred percent sure, she and her friends do a lot of research. Steven is very afraid of the water, but he tests it out, because he is the only guy in the group. When he steps in the water, he does hear their call. So it seems that the guys are being targeted since the females can't hear it. Two guys from their town come out of the water acting strange. They lost their souls and don't have much longer to live. The question is, can their souls be placed back in their bodies inf the auras are missing? Can the souls be taken away from the beings in the water if if Shayna and the trio kill them?
This book was very interesting. The Little Mermaid is my favorite Disney movie. I didn't realize how different the movie was from the book by Hans Christian Anderson. That alone captured me. I was hooked from the beginning of the book. I had to see what was going to happen. The characters grew on me in this book. Jodi finally realized how she was treating her friends. She didn't realize what she was doing and she promised them to work on it. Shayna still worries too much. She seems to have to be perfect at everything. She hates asking for help, but in this book, she finally goes ask Deb for help. She is growing as well. Steven is still the same old Steven. His powers are progressing slower than the other two, but he doesn't let that get to him. I loved Jodi's new power in this book. Being able to control lightening is full of awesomesauce!!! The details Shauna used to describe this was beautifully written. I loved it!!! I also learned a little more behind Shayna's black wings. I also liked how there was a bigger battle in this book. It lasted longer as well. That was my favorite part out of this book. That took a surprising turn. I am very interested in seeing what happens next.
I am even more confused on the relationship between Shayna and Jensen. I think I am going to quit trying tot figure that one help. They seem to take one step forward, then several steps back. I wish their was more of a love story in this series. I love my romances. But it is still a great series!!!
Shauna seems to capture my attention more with each book. Her descriptions are beautifully written, and I can't wait to read more of her work. I can't wait to read the sequel Fire!!!!
An Electronic Advanced Reader Copy was provided by the publisher for review. Quotes have been pulled from an ARC and may be subject to change.
Shay gets caught up in a fight with some dangerous sea creatures and as always has help from her two very best friends Jodi and Steven who are also teenagers with extraordinary magical powers. Together they must stop the the sea creatures before they drain the sleepy town’s souls one by one.
Definitely my favourite of the series so far. Why? Because it’s about sea creatures. In this case, it’s about water nymphs. Or as everyone knows, thanks to Disney, mermaids. (My favourite Disney movie!) I loved the plot behind this one and it was definitely fast paced. Even for me. I generally felt that the plot was moving quickly, and there were no slow parts which is a great thing because I hate slow moving plots. Every chapter had something to add to the storyline and I was rather thankful that it wasn’t longer that 300 pages. (Sometimes I get so bored when it’s too descriptive..)
There’s more focus on the storyline than any of the character development, unless you count Shayna’s growing powers. I also liked how they finally argue in this one. Not every friendship is perfect and to know that the teens in this book fight like regular normal teens is realistic. There is very little romance in Water, but there is a scene that has some mild passion, so I am warning anyone who is younger than sixteen to be wary of that.
I always thought Water is the natural element more so that Air, but I guess since Jodi is an Elemental, she could control both? What I didn’t understand was the extended paranormal aspect of who and what the Elemental trio are. I just couldn’t picture them to be the beings that was described at in the end. Maybe it’s because it’s mixing the two genres together that confused me. I sure hope to find out more because I would really want to know. I can’t wait until Fire comes out. I’m not even sure if that’s the last book in the series.
I received a review copy in exchange for my honest opinion.
It's nearly 5 AM and I've just finished reading the third installment in the Elemental series by Shauna Granger. I have to say that at this point, Water is my favorite of the three I've read thus far.
Like the first two, Water picks up soon after where Air left off; the kids trying to enjoy their summer. Shayna, an avid surfer, encounters a water creature as she rushes to save a little boy. Soon the three are racing against time to save two teenaged boys who are fighting for their lives.
While I adore Shayna and can see a lot of myself in her, she has also managed to annoy me a lot with her blunt ways. It's only in Water that I understand why she is the natural leader of the three and why they let her lead; without Shayna, Jodi and Steven wouldn't even know how to begin to control their magic.
Without giving too much away, I was saddened by the relationship, or lack of one, between Shayna and Jensen. I have high hopes that they will come to a happy medium some day. Also, I was so happy to see Jodi really come into her magic and own it.
I had hoped that they would find their fourth in this book, but it wasn't to be. I'm guessing somewhere between the 4th and 5th books we may meet that person. And I am so happy that we finally find out what the deal is with Shayna and her wings! Okay, so not the complete answer, but enough of one that you're like "ah, okay. I get it."
Ms. Granger is an amazing author. She's able to pull you in and make you feel that you're right there with the characters as they learn more about themselves and the magic they hold. I look forward to reading not only the last two books in this series - sniffle, sniffle - but whatever she comes up with next.

It was okay. I can't totally a main character who know who she is and is okay with the friends that she has rather be a pointless social climber. Her love interest is not that enticing to me personally so I have trouble seeing why she pines for him.
Got the first book free on Kindle. After reading it I then purchased the next books in the series immediately reading those also. Good books. Look forward to the last book in the series Spirit.
