I bought this book because the writer used to be my professor during my undergraduate studies. I liked his lectures but I have to say I didn't like at all this book.
The book is about a 50 year old famous painter who has an obsession with a 20 year old boy. But the narrative time is that of the past (the obsession happened 3 years ago) and this is the first thing that doesn't let the reader to sink into her emotions. The woman kees explaining rationally everything (I guess this is the academic influence) and I couldn't sympathise at all with her. Also, it seemed to me that he failed in basic narrative techniques, for example the rule: show don't tell. In general it missed action and I didn't feel that he really knew his characters, they didn't seem real. Near the end I even skipped lines because I didnt 'like the narration and I wasn't into the characters.
Moreover, he used a lot of cliches (for example in the beginning he kept repeating: I would never have guessed how things would change", or something similar. Also, apparently because of his cademic status, he used words that an ordinary person would never-ever use in real life.
