La società degli animali estinti

Rate this book

"Most people live much longer than they should, don't you think? We wait, dangle around, and then we die. That's all there is to Earth, really: a big waiting room for extinction, an Extinction Club, with the posthumous issuing of the membership card..."

"The Extinction Club" begins as a jumble of words, seemingly directionless, with disagreeable and contentious characters, almost like a moralistic fable. However, for those who persist beyond this beginning, they will find an extraordinary adventure alongside two equally unique characters. Nile is a man on the run, escaping from his ex, from defamation charges, from the world, and from drugs, essentially fleeing from himself. Celeste, on the other hand, is a fourteen-year-old girl with a brilliant mind, molded to be so by her grandmother.

In the remote mountains of Canada, a fierce battle ensues between Celeste and poachers, no holds barred. You don't need to be an animal rights activist to grasp the cruelty of the illegal hunters and other reprehensible individuals. Behind an excellent albeit slightly confusing plot, "The Extinction Club" hides a fierce critique of heinous crimes perpetrated against the animal world, crimes that have gone unpunished and are vehemently denounced.

Despite this book being one of the most disturbing reads I've had in a while, I enjoyed it immensely. I gobbled this book down as fast as my responsibilities would allow. My main problem with this book, however, is the problem I have with most modern (and a lot of Classic Lit as well): the beginning of the book is rather cliche. I don't know if I can properly explain this to other readers, but when a book starts with a character doing something mysterious and you don't learn even their name for 70 pages, or anything about anything, it feels like a really contrived beginning - almost like writing a book solely in the second or third person as a gimmick, which only works well if done exceptionally well. That's the only thing I had against this book, though, and after the first 100 pages, everything caught up with itself and moved at a good pace. If someone had told me what this book was about before I read it, I probably wouldn't have read it. There's a lot of descriptions about and if you're an animal lover (and a wuss), like I am, then I don't think I could recommend this book in good faith. Some of the things described literally made me sick to my stomach and I had to set the book down to recuperate. Overall, though, it wasn't graphic detail or gratuitous violence, just plain descriptions that put my stomach on high alert.

I didn't really know what this book was about beforehand so I had no expectations. I did find some of the subjects disturbing and saddening even more so because although this is a work of fiction - animal cruelty does not live only in the works of fiction it is our and their reality. Humans have a lot to answer for with regard to the very inhumane treatment of all animals.
I loved the two main characters and all their quirks. I found the writing style was very good in its ability to deliver the tough and confronting whilst also injecting the story with joy and humour. Overall a good read and one I would recommend.

Withdrawn from Southwark Library

Opening -It was dark - north country dark - by the time I arrived but this had to be it: the Church of St. Davnet-des-Monts.

The first 70 - 100 pages is hard graft, however by the time you hit 100+: *phew* he is writing and you are reading.

High 3*

It was a bit of a mind-trip to read a novel about illegal wildlife poaching & associated torture while on vacation in one of Canada's biggest & oldest natural parks, but it certainly brought home the novel's themes in a pointed fashion. The characters are well-drawn and the plot starts with a bang and keeps on to the finish.

I loved this book. The characters in this book are so well written that they felt like people I wanted to be with, at least the good ones. The bad ones scared me as they should. Excellent book. I want more from Jeffrey Moore.

Cosa ci sarà mai all’interno?

Moore descrive tutto in maniera veloce, originale, diretta.

Traduce diversi libri come freelance.

This was a decent book overall, and I found I read it quite quickly. I liked both the main characters, and definitely thought the hunting/animal welfare storyline made a great backdrop for the crime/thriller genre. It was quite disturbing at times, with the descriptions of animal cruelty, but it mostly felt useful/necessary to the story and I like the raising of public awareness on these issues. What lost this book points for me was the apparent failure to tie up loose ends - the character of the 'vet' I felt was much underused and disappeared without real reason at the end; it felt like a TV show where an actor has had to leave for some reason so their character is written out. I was also disappointed that none of the issues raised - such as hunting, bear bile farming etc. were really resolved. Although the main bad guys were taken care of, there was no indication this was going to stop much of what was going on. Better than the average crime novel, but a little disappointing.

This book is incredibly dark and far more disturbing than I expected, and a very heavy read, overall, but it wasn't a chore to finish it. There are long periods during which little happens, but I hardly noticed due to the growing suspense and my love of the unique characters. Celeste is the most realistic portrayal of a teenage girl that I have ever seen or read in any media, and living inside Nile's head is a real trip, especially given the absurdity of his situation. He is in turns completely relatable and absolutely insane.

A well-written book that I didn't finish because it has many instances of "detailed descriptions of animal cruelty" or "animal torture porn" depending upon one's perspective. When it was needed to illustrate or advance the story, that's fine, but it was just getting gratuitous, which made me stop.

I must be getting wussy in my old age. Still three stars for fine writing. I may come back.

Noir with an Environmental Conscience

Not your typical thriller, The Extinction Club features colorful characters, an environmental consciousness, and an atypical locale. Add to it Jeffrey Moore's strong writing and you have something that goes a step beyond ordinary thriller and crime fiction.

Nile Nightingale is on the lam, sort of, fleeing a vengeful ex-girlfriend by whom he has a young daughter. He made plenty of mistakes, including taking his daughter on an excursion without mentioning it to the girlfriend. That makes him a wanted man, a wanted wealthy man, as well as a man who has had problems with drugs and alcohol, who is prone to hallucinations. From NJ, he heads to Quebec Province, to a small hunting town in the Laurentians. There he finds a surprise in the form of a girl, savagely wounded, left in a sack to bleed to death. Using a fountain of knowledge accumulated in failed career attempts, he mends and nurses her back to life.

Céleste Jonquéres, 14 going on 15, is a self-schooled little genius fraught with issues revolving around her appearance, her interests, and the fact that now, with the death of her grandmother who raised her, finds herself alone in the world. Then there's the fact that a gang of hunters milking bears for their bile, as well as other vile torments, are after her. She despises them, their maltreatment of animals for money, and that they hunt and kill for enjoyment.

At first, she doesn't like or trust Nile. And herein lies the strongest point of the book: the skillful and wonderful manner in which Moore develops the relationship between the two of them. Because of this, in the end, you'll find yourself greatly affected by what transpires.

The other strong point is how Moore calls attention to the plight of wildlife at the hands of people interested only in money. You'll learn some things you never knew, things that will sicken you. The abuse of wildlife goes beyond blasting them into extinction, and these horrors are much worse.

Originally published in Canada in 2010. Nominated for an Arthur Ellis Award for best crime. Recommended if you're looking for something different and more intelligent than the usual fare of thriller and crime fiction.

Great story.

The neo-noir mystery in this story is beautifully crafted. The characters are beautifully defined and help with building the atmosphere through the depth of character psychology. The only thing that took getting used to was the random distribution of French. Since it's a language I didn't know, I had to occasionally look up the words, phrases, and sentences. This wasn't necessarily a problem, though it did break down my reading pace considerably. I'm only including this in case other potential readers who also don't know French. Considering the setting, Quebec, the occasional use of French is something that I probably should have foreseen.

An amazing trip in the decaying mind of an addict suffering from affluenza. I'm not sure what to make of this but i couldn't put it down. It was an absolute train wreck and I mean that in a completely positive light.

I've read some pretty twisted books in the past but this one is in the top 5, maybe the top 2 of all time oddities.

I absolutely loved it, but wish i could make better sense of the last several chapters. I'll have to let it sink in and reread them at a later date. Then again, i may just take it for what it is; a disturbing, gory, neurotic, dream-state story with taste of "Bearskin" combined with a side of"Deliverance" and smothered in a gravy by Lewis Carroll.

I got to page 233 and said that i just had to give up. I tried. But I honestly could not find any redeeming qualities in the two main characters.

I came to realize I just didn't care or want to know what happened. Which told me it was time to give up.
