About the author

B. Jeyamohan (also credited as Jayamohan) is one of the most influential contemporary, Tamil and Malayalam writer and literary critic from Nagercoil in Kanyakumari District in the south Indian state of Tamil Nadu.

He entered the world of Tamil literature in the 1990s, Jeyamohan has had impacted the Tamil literary landscape as it emerged from the post-modern phase. His best-known and critically acclaimed work is Vishnupuram, a deeply layered fantasy set as a quest through various schools of Indian philosophy and mythology. His other well-known novels include Rubber, Pin Thodarum Nizhalin Kural, Kanyakumari, Kaadu, Pani Manithan, Eazhaam Ulagam, and Kotravai. His writing is heavily influenced by the works of humanitarian thinkers Leo Tolstoy and Mohandas Karamchand Gandhi. Drawing on the strength of his life experiences and extensive travel around India, Jeyamohan is able to re-examine and interpret the essence of India's rich literary and classical traditions.

தந்தை பெயர் எஸ்.பாகுலேயன் பிள்ளை. தாத்தா பெயர் வயக்கவீட்டு சங்கரப்பிள்ளை. பூர்வீக ஊர் குமரிமாவட்டம் விளவங்கோடு வட்டம், திருவரம்பு. தாத்தா அடிமுறை ஆசான். ஆகவே சங்கு ஆசான் என அழைக்கப்பட்டிருக்கிறார். அப்பாவின் அம்மா பெயர் லட்சுமிக்குட்டி அம்மா. அவரது சொந்த ஊர் குமரிமாவட்டம் விளவங்கோடு வட்டம், திருவட்டாறு. அப்பாவுடன் பிறந்தவர்கள் இருவர். தம்பி எஸ்.சுதர்சனன் நாயர் தமிழக அரசுத்துறையில் வட்டார வளர்ச்சி அலுவலராக இருந்து ஓய்வுபெற்று இப்போது பத்மநாபபுரத்தில் வசிக்கிறார். அப்பாவின் தங்கை சரோஜினி அம்மா திருவட்டாறில் ஆதிகேசவ பெருமாள் ஆலய முகப்பில் உள்ள பாட்டியின் பூர்வீகவீட்டிலேயே வாழ்கிறார்.

அப்பா முதலில் வழங்கல் துறையில் வேலைபார்த்தார். பின் பத்திரப்பதிவுத்துறையில் எழுத்தராக வேலைபார்த்து ஓய்வு பெற்றார். அவரது பணிக்காலத்தில் பெரும்பகுதி அருமனை பத்திரப்பதிவு அலுவலகத்தில் கழிந்தது. 1984ல் தன் அறுபத்தி ஒன்றாம் வயதில் தற்கொலை செய்துகொண்டார்.

அம்மா பி. விசாலாட்சி அம்மா. அவரது அப்பாவின் சொந்த ஊர் நட்டாலம். அவர் பெயர் பரமேஸ்வரன் பிள்ளை. அம்மாவின் அம்மா பெயர் பத்மாவதி அம்மா. அவரது சொந்த ஊர் திருவிதாங்கோடு. நட்டாலம் கோயில் அருகே உள்ள காளி வளாகம் அம்மாவின் குடும்ப வீடு. அம்மாவுக்கு சகோதரர்கள் நால்வர். மூத்த அண்ணா வேலப்பன் நாயர், இரண்டாமவர் கேசவபிள்ளை. மூன்றாம் அண்ணா மாதவன் பிள்ளை. அடுத்து பிரபாகரன் நாயர். கடைசி தம்பி காளிப்பிள்ளை. அம்மாவுக்கு இரு சகோதரிகள். அக்கா தாட்சாயணி அம்மா இப்போது நட்டாலம் குடும்ப வீட்டில் வசிக்கிறார். இன்னொரு அக்கா மீனாட்சியம்மா கேரள மாநிலம் ஆரியநாட்டில் மணமாகிச்சென்று அங்கெ வாழ்ந்து இறந்தார். அம்மா 1984ல் தன் ஐம்பத்து நாலாம் வயதில் தற்கொலைசெ

Subconsciousness, Alchemy, glimpse of Neuroscience and Psychiatry are the elements in this novel.

A collection of eclectic short stories. I had this feeling of having vaguely heard of each story already. This was perhaps due to the fact that the author had tried to emulate various genres through some striking stories. The emulation rather than the story was at forefront. It was more about the style and the style was good, but there was not much impact to the stories. Each story has some sort of exposure of truth or a glimmer that generally sets a short story apart. None of these stories had the punch you would expect and they were all very close to having that punch. It was just that it was predictable.

A good read for a rainy day but not something that is unmissable.

அறிவியல் புனைகதைகள். சயன்ஸ் பிக்சன் என்றால் விண்வெளி எல்லாம் தேவையில்லை, சித்த மருத்துவம், ரசவாதம் என நம்மூர் சை-பை-களுக்கு பஞ்சமில்லை என சொல்லாமல் சொல்லும் புத்தகம். கடைசியாய் இலக்கியம் பற்றிய அந்தப் பெரிய கட்டுரைத் தவிர (சத்தியமா புரியல) அனைத்து கதைகளும் மனதில் நிற்கின்றன. ஒரு சிலவற்றை நம்மால் கணிக்க முடியும். ஒரு சில நல்ல கற்பனைகள் (நாக்கு).

இப்புத்தகத்தில் இடம்பெற்றுள்ள எட்டு சிறுகதைகளில் "ஐந்தாவது மருந்து" "விசும்பு" ஆகிய இரு கதைகள் எனக்கு பிடித்திருந்தது. இப்புத்தகத்தினை படிக்கையில், இது தீவிர இலக்கியத்தை சேராத வணிக எழுத்து என்ற எண்ணத்தை தவிர்க்க முடியவில்லை.

This is a very innovative sci-fi attempt by jeyamohan. More rooted to our culture when compared to western inspired sci fi stories by sujatha.

Plus - the unique ideas around which the stories are constructed. The author covers diverse ideas like Conscience, Chaos Theory, Apocalypse etc. Also the stories are a cross pollination of science with history, philosophy and social ideas.

Minus - the narration style. Stories are very limited on plot content and the characters mostly discuss philosophical and science ideas. Nothing wrong with that. But a fiction is expected to implicitly convey philosophical ideas through its narration and not through dialogues. This gives most of the stories a non fiction flavor.

One story which was an exception to this was "Utru Nokkum Paravai". The climax of this story was mind blowing. A deep philosophical idea implicitly conveyed in the climax of this story. Wish all stories had been like this.

Nevertheless this is a great attempt from Jeyamohan because of its nativist style and also considering this genre is very rare in tamil.

தமிழில் இப்படியும் அறிவியல் புனைவு எழுதமுடியுமா என்று வியக்க வைக்கிற படைப்பு. இது வரை சுஜாதா தான் இந்த வகை படைப்புகளில் முடிசூடா மன்னனாக இருந்தார். இதில் இன்னொரு கலரும் ஒளியும் கூட காட்ட முடியும் என்று ஜெமோ அருமையாக எடுத்துக் காட்டி இருக்கிறார். அதிலும் சுஜாதாவின் கதைகளில் அதிகமாக அறிவியற் பதங்களும், ஆதி புத்திசாலி குழந்தைகள்/தாத்தாக்கள் வருவார்கள் - கொஞ்சம் அசிமாவ் வாசனையும் அடிக்கும் - ஜெமோ இதிலிருந்தேல்லாம் முற்றிலும் மாறுபட்டு இப்படைப்பை உருவாக்கி இருக்கிறார். வரலாறா, இலக்கியமா, அறிவியலா, கற்பனையா என்று அதிசயிக்க வைக்கும் படைப்பு. நிச்சயம் தமிழில் படிக்க வேண்டிய முக்கியமான சிறுகதை நூல்களுள் ஒன்று.

பல தளங்களில் விரியும் அபாரமான அறிவியல் புனைகதைகள். உற்று நோக்கும் பறவை, விசும்பு, பூர்ணம், நம்பிக்கையாளன், நாக்கு போன்ற கதைகள் எப்பேர்ப்பட்ட வாசகரையும் உள்ளிழுப்பவை. இந்திய தத்துவ, கலாசார அம்சங்கள், சூழலியல், நரம்பியல், பரிணாவியல் என்று பல இழைகளைத் தன்னகத்தே கொண்ட இக்கததைகள் உலகத் தரம் வாய்ந்தவை என்று சொன்னால் மிகையாகாது.
