He is the most prolific novelist in Romanian literature and one of the most accomplished. All his major work, however, was written before the political changes in Romania following World War II. Although Sadoveanu remained a productive author after the war, like many other writers in communist countries, he had to adjust his aesthetic to meet the demands of the communist regime, and he wrote little of artistic value between 1945 and his death in 1961.

Un roman important, care se citește și azi cu interes. Deși înțeleptul Kesarion Breb, educat de preoții din Egipet, este un mare naiv, ca să nu folosesc un termen mai tare. Transcriu cel mai obscur pasaj din carte:
„Aceasta era cea dintîi întîlnire a lor după lungă dorință...
- Mărită doamnă, zise Kesarion..., n-am stat pînă acuma în Bizanț decît pentru a te vedea.
- Pleci și domnia ta? întrebă nedumerită împărătița.
- Precum am spus.
- Atunci de ce ai așteptat pînă acum? întrebă ea deodată aprig. Ai cunoscut nefericirea mea?
- Fără îndoială, am cunoscut-o.
- Știi că am avut vreo bucurie?
Breb tăcu.
- O, domnule, răspunde-mi, căci m-am deprins a te ști a-toate-cunoscător... Am știut că veghezi asupra mea. Acuma cînd rămîn cu desăvîrșire singură, nu înțeleg de ce mă părăsești.
- Mărită stăpînă, vorbi el cu voce moale, nefericirea nu ți-a adus-o puterea împăratului, ci iubirea mea.
- E adevărat? țipă înăbușit Maria.
- E adevărat...
- Vai mie, suspină ea. E adevărat că ai stat în templele egiptenilor?
- Într-adevăr...” (capitolul XV).
Degeaba se lamentează Kesarion: „O, părinte, îi șopti Breb..., eu am fost solul care a dus o floare curată și am aruncat-o într-o volbură prihănită” (XIV): cel născut a doua oară, inițiatul în mistere, a greșit. Dar a sesizat mult prea tîrziu greșeala. Mărturisirea lui nu mai poate îndrepta răul. Aici e întrebarea care nu poate primi răspuns: imaculatul maculează, din bunătate înflorește răul. Veghea lui („Am știut că veghezi asupra mea”), întîrzierea lui în Bizanț sînt fără folos.
Cel dintîi care a formulat limpede cruda aporie a cărții a fost Nicolae Manolescu: „Înțelepciunea, oricît de solid ar fi întemeiată pe blîndeță și generozitate, nu e scutită uneori de a face rău” (Sadoveanu sau utopia cărții, București: Editura Eminescu, 1976, p.217). Cercul inițierii lui Breb (cu cele trei trepte: învățătura, experiența, renunțarea) nu se închide, nu poate să se închidă. Îl va chinui pentru totdeauna remușcarea. Kesarion a fost înfrînt în proba iubirii. Căința lui arată limpede că a rămas o ființă vulnerabilă. A fost pedepsit pentru vanitate. A-toate-știutorul se izbește de cea mai lumească întrebare: în ce chip poți îndrepta ceea ce nu mai poate fi îndreptat? Așadar, mai scrie criticul, „în orice inițiere există o cruzime”. Dar încercarea cruzimii nu explică pînă la urmă nimic. Întrebările nu primesc un răspuns lămurit: „De ce a trebuit să fie sacrificată Maria? Numai ca Breb să se purifice prin suferință de cele lumești” (p.118). Tristețea lui arată că rana nu s-a stins.
În concluzie, tema narațiunii lui Sadoveanu este „invalidarea legii de către experiență”.

I feel that the old man, kir Filaret, is right when he says: don't cry too hard, so you don't darken your beauty. Possibly, the happy and unhappy ones whose time is running out, go to a more pleasing place than this one. But of course things happen here like in the old days of great-great-great-grandparents' fairy tales...

Nu am putut să nu observ că în descriere numesc asta ,,o poveste simplă". Nu m-aș pripi chiar așa.
Nu că ar fi aici leagănul filozofiei ezoterice, dar
nu aș zice că ceea ce s-a scris aici este atât de cooerent cât să se poată numai o ,,lectură simplă". Mai degravă te prinzi de cap încercând să urmărești ce se întâmplă și să te convingi până la capăt să citești care asta chiar dacă te sfâșie.
Mi-a plăcut partea de misticism și intro-ul de aproape-fantastic.

The first reviewed book which shows up in my agenda, reviewed in a language unspoken by the majority of Goodreaders, that can't make a good first impression! So I decided to write another one in English, which will not be a translation, because when it comes to self-indulgence, I like to go the extra mile! Of course, the other review remains to be read by anyone who so desires, with that out of the way, this is The Golden Bough, by Mihail Sadoveanu, Romania's least favorite novelist!
As I'm thinking about what exactly I didn't like about this book, I'm also involuntarily wondering why in the living bananas is this mandatory school literature. What is the criteria by which the ministry of edumcation assigns these books to students? I understand that it contains a spiritual strata which is worth being explored, but a) I doubt any teacher properly goes into it, and b) Voiculescu's literature possesses the double benefit of also containing spiritual themes, while being better! I cannot for the life of me understand why would someone be obligated by the edumcation system to read a bad book earlier than college! At least then you know you'll want to study books for a living!
My disdain for this waste of ink stems from the clumsiness of the writing. The story starts with a historian or something like that having a reverie from an implied past life, which is naught but a framing device for the main narrative, the idea of reincarnation being left unexplored. The protagonist is a man named Kesarion, a priest of the Dacian god Zamolxis, who is sent by his master in an initiating journey on account of the birth of a new religion on the continent, Christianity, which has to be studied in order to find out whether it can replace the old one. I reckon it could be worth expanding on the philosophy that humans require to take small steps toward the absolute truth on account of their unfortunately limited understanding, but this is sadly another idea left to gather dust on the shelf right after it has been mentioned.
The plot then follows Kesarion through Greece, during a dispute regarding religious paintings, and whether or not such things break the second commandment, a dispute which I haven't got to read about much.
Now, I admit I couldn't bring myself to read more than half of the novel, which might have provided closure on these subjects, but honestly, the dialogues were saccharine, the characters were one-dimensional, the narration was vapid, so I don't really see any incentive to hustle through. Besides, even if the ideas do get closure, it doesn't change the fact that they're forced into the narrative as opposed to weaved into it, the author cramming them in with such ham-handedness you can basically hear them grinding against the boring narrative!
The nadir of the story was when Kesarion spent the night at the house of a farmer too kind for the good of his family, gave a shoe to his daughter, which fit her like a glove, ironically, and I shit you not, for that reason, she can go to the capital and have a chance at being the prince's wife. Wait, what? That's not how royal marriages work! So fuck this book and the teacher who made me read it, this piece of shit was written by holding the pencil between the buttcheeks!

Finished it . I must say that at first I couldn't get over the wordly style of writing which sometimes seemed (to me) to be even stilted.
I believe readers of this book should really overcome this tiny drawback in order to discover a magical story about friendship , love and a bygone era (the set is quite fascinating ).

Interesantă lucrare, mai ales pentru cei ce-l știu pe Mihail Sadoveanu mai degrabă drept un scriitor de romane istorice, mai degrabă în slujba puterii instalate după 23 august 1944, alături de care a avut și-o remarcabilă carieră politică. Că ne place sau nu, că sistemul a fost bun, rău, sau foarte rău, aceasta ține deja de alt resort, faptele însă rămân.
Scrisă ceva mai devreme, în 1933, cartea reprezintă aventurile unui tânăr dac în Bizanț (Constantinopolul de mai târziu), elementele religioase legate de propovăduirea creștinismului și caracteristicile de basm oriental fiind și ele prezente. Pe scurt, n-ar fi o lectură deloc rea, deși, în zilele noastre, nu-i prea văd publicul-țintă...

Am destul de multe gânduri, precum și sentimente destul de diverse cu privire la acest roman. Nu este un roman rău, clar nu este excelent. Este o tentativă interesantă, are un conținut interesant, însă tehnica lui Sadoveanu nu a fost dezvoltată îndeajuns pentru un astfel de roman. Discursul acestui roman este stângaci. Seamănă cu parcurgerea unui drum românesc: gropuri, hopuri, viraje aiurea. Creanga de aur putea fi ceva mult mai mult, dar rămâne un roman inedit prin concept.

Un roman ermetic, scris intr-un stil arhaic, specific vremurilor descrise cu multa pricepere de Sadoveanu. O opera ce te pune pe ganduri si ofera o perspectiva diferita chiar si asupra marilor conducatori, ii umanizeaza, cum apare de exemplu imparatul Constantin. Cred ca este si o scriere ce se apropie de categoria realismului magic prin elementele ce apartin basmului.

Am urat cartea asta, cum nu am mai urat altă carte vreodată. Personaje aiurite, acțiune neinteresanta... nu am înțeles nimic din cartea asta, am rămas numai cu faptul ca măgarul vorbea și ca la un moment dat, un personaj s-a dus sa ia friptura de la un alt personaj. :))

Am citit-o numai pentru ora de română))Acțiune plictisitoare și de neînțeles. Singurul lucru pe care l-am apreciat a fost construcția personajului Maria,care dădea dovadă de bunătate și smerenie oriunde pășea. În rest nu prea am înțeles nimic:)))

Kesarion Breb the character of Cranga de Aur ask a lot, believe and overpass obstacles and still remains with waiting answers.
Brilliant story , fascinated for the period of time which was written.
