I loved this book for so many reasons, but the main reason was because the hero was Hispanic. Now, don’t get me wrong, I love and adore men of all races, backgrounds, accents what have you but it’s not often that I read a character that is of the same background as me, someone I can relate too and understand his slang and super sexy words when spoken. Gawd, it truly makes me melt right off my chair!

With that said, this book rocked it. Not only was Simon super hot and oh-so tortured but Sage, the heroine was super cute, brave and I just loved her. That and I want her hair. Anyway…full of twists and fast-paced fun, it’s a great read and continuation to Joss Ware’s post-apocalyptic world.

Now on to Quent and Zoe!

I listened to the audio version of this book. An excellent performance by the narrator, but he did tend to speak really quickly at times, so I had to slow down the speed. His accents were great - especially the Spanish one belonging to our hero Simon, (an ex mobster/henchman/killer). This story is well written and set 50 years into the future after some horrific event has changed the earth. There are 'strangers', cult members, weird creatures roaming the night and people trying to make a life among the rubble of Las Vegas (New Vegas or Envy for short). Six men (unknown to each other) who were in caves near Vegas when the event happened, were knocked unconscious. When they came to, it was 50 years in the future and each one had a strange super power - apart from the weird fact they hadn't aged. An very imaginative story.

It's the good guys against the bad guys, as our heros try to find the people responsible for the apocalypse. There's drama, adventure and romance as they defend the rag tag group of residents of NV that survived and have made a life from themselves in this new world. This is mostly an ensemble cast and the main male characters come and go throughout. This story is features Simon and Sage. I recommend reading from the beginning of this series, or you might be a bit lost. The back story is ongoing, although the romance has a HEA. 3.5 stars

(RabidReviews.com)Dystopian books and I have finally clicked and I have been reading lots of them lately. This one by Colleen Gleason, writing as Joss Ware, was the second in this series about a small group of men that get sealed in a cave in 2010 and wake up fifty years later. The world they knew is gone and in it’s place is a world that was devastated by earthquakes, tornadoes, high winds, and it all culminated with most of the population dying. The group found their way to Envy in the previous installment. Envy was once called NV for New Vegas, as in Las Vegas, and now it’s become known as Envy. The inhabitants mostly live in one of the high rise hotels, one of the few that survived mostly unscathed. Now it’s sitting pretty close to the Pacific Ocean, since the far western part of the United States is now gone. Even the weather has changed and Nevada is now tropical. World building is close to being the most important element in this book, as much as it was in the first installment, however, the romance is still center stage.

While the world building is beautifully done by the author, as before, my favorite was the romance and characters. Simon was once a lethal henchman for a powerful crime boss, and was on the run from him when he entered the cave in 2010. He hated himself, and what he had become, and the drugs he used to just get by. Now is his chance to reinvent himself-if he can get past how horrible of a man he was in the past. Sage is a super smart, tech savvy, beautiful young woman who is working to get an underground internet installed in the area, along with her best friend, Theo, and his brother, Lou. It has to be underground because of the Strangers- people that are immortal and have a crystal embedded in their upper chests. They have power, nice cars that actually run, and live in huge homes away from Envy. Theo and his brother Lou also have an extremely interesting back story. To make things even more interesting, Theo is in love with Sage, and not about to let some new guy(Simon)steal her away from him. Not that Sage is his either.

The main character in the previous installment, survived with the gift of healing. Simon has his own new ability, one that he’s not telling anyone about-so I am not telling it either-except to say, it’s one of the best super powers ever! It’s very much needed for this group that are working underground against the Strangers. It’s good versus evil in this new world. And I haven’t even mentioned the zombies!

If you haven’t discovered Colleen Gleason’s work yet, you should really check her books out. I have enjoyed every book I have read by her. They are filled with action, life and death moments, and more importantly, romance. Thankfully, she has quite a large body of work so I will definitely be continuing on with more of her work in the future. I highly recommend this series to adult paranormal romance fans, and even urban fantasy readers will find something to like about this series. Fantastic read!

I really enjoyed the first installment of this series and immensely enjoyed this book. I still think the romance aspect is a little lacking but I love, love the world Ware has built.

This book is about Simon Japp who is truly an outsider. He was an outsider in his life before the global disaster all but obliterated the Earth, and when he awakes 50 years later to this post-apocalyptic world he is the outsider among the other men who also experienced this mysterious Rip Van Winkle number. I'm always a sucker for tortured heroes and Simon has quite a past. I think he really made this book for me. Although, I kinda felt like we didn't quite get all his past. We learn about his violent past, as the right hand man for one of Vegas' biggest mobsters, but we never really learned how he got into that position. At least, I don't remember if this was explained. I read this a few weeks ago and am just now getting to review it.

So anyone else who's read this series did we find out how Simon ended up entangled with the mob? When reading I kept thinking, there's something more to this story. Something about his childhood or upbringing that we're missing. So, Kristie(j), you're the one who turned me on to this series. Do you remember? I'm pretty sure we didn't get that info. In any case, I felt like if I had just a little bit more about his background it would have made it a little more satisfying.

I really liked the heroine Sage who, because of her heritage, is also an outsider. Judged because of where she comes from. I thought she and Simon made a good pair.

I was a little miffed with Theo in this one. I was really intrigued by him in the first book and he was kind of a dope to Sage in this book. But I'm still looking forward to his book.

All in all, a good second book. I'm impressed by the world building but still wish for a pinch more smexy lovin'.

Second book of this series and I'm still in awe with the world that Ms. Ware created. The romance is better than the first one, at least I can "feel" the attraction between Simon and Sage from the early chapters (for book #1, I think I waited untill past 100 pages?). Simon is a kind of hero that I like in a book. Quiet, reserved, yet deadly. He is one good example of the "tortured" hero for me. Love his ability by the way (which makes me wonder about Wyatt's and Fence's, as well!) Then Sage, my oh my, how can you NOT love a woman who loves books, computer savvy, and knows exactly what she wants? I think the two make a fine pair. I'm not really sure with the love triangle aspect -- because unless one of them is one bad guy, that always means a heartbreak, which I'm not fond of. I just hope that Theo gets his own HEA.

Interesting twist for Remington Truth and I really feel that Ian Marcks is not a complete lost cause :p. Next book will be Quent's, and he has been given enough teasers that I hope the book delivers.

I keep loving these books! I liked this book even better than the first. This one centers around Simon, one of the five men who came through the change unchanged, and Sage, the computer geek that's a member of the resistance. Sage is given information that leads her back to her hometown, the town she escaped from over 10 years earlier. She can't go alone so she takes Simon. They pretend to be married, to get into the city she came from that is basically a cult. But pretending may just turn into the real thing...

I loved Simon! I thought he and Sage were both well thought out characters, each with a range of emotions and thoughts and interesting backstories. The romance between the two was passionate with a lot of innocence which kept you turning the page trying to figure out when they were finally going to get to it. But even though some of it was a bit predictable, I didn't see the end coming at all (hint: Remington Truth isn't what I expected).

A worthwhile addition to the series, and you definitely devour it!

Envy Chronicles Book Two

Simon and Sage must go to Sage's homeplace to find information left behind by Remington Truth. The catch, Falling Creek is a settlement bent on repopulating the devastated world by strict breeding policies. Sage must be married to return and avoid being thrust upon some man with who-knows-how-many other wives. During their stay, Simon reveals that he gained a power in the Sedona caves as well. Sage also discovers his past when a Stranger recognizes him from the past.

Narration: Sebastian Fields does wonders with accents and dialects. He employs a reading narration utilizing accents instead of an acting narration with different voices.

If you're looking for a story with action, fun awkwardness, a bit of angst and love, this is the book for you!

It's been a few weeks since the hero and his friends stepped out of that cave and into 50 years in the future, possessing paranormal abilities. The hero, considering his life before, could possibly be the only man alive glad that the world ended. It was the only thing he could have broken the tie between him and the crime lord he was bound to. Though the hero was never a cold-blooded killer, the fact of that fact was that he did kill people. He can never wash their blood off his hands or forgive himself the guilt he's carried around. Because he may portray himself as an aloof and calculating man, at heart, he is a good person considering his past. But he doesn't think of himself like that. So, he keeps his distance from everyone and is quiet and mysterious and refrains from acting on the forbidden desires he feels towards one female in particular.

The heroine escaped a cult that believed in babies as the future and where woman are incubators to the future generation. Though her appearance may tip people off that she's a 'loose woman' but she's not. In fact, she's a virgin. And when her best friend begins to throw hints that he wants more from her that friendship, she gets nervous. Still, she secretly desires the quiet man with the beautiful long hair even though he shows no signs of feeling the same towards her. But as it happens, fate and an adventure has tossed to 2 together and the setting is a place she never wished to visit again. Back at the town when she was born and raised, the hero and heroine infiltrate the cult in search of clues to find the mysterious Remington Truth. Acting as man and wife may very well be the hardest thing the hero has ever had to do. Desperately he holds onto his cold endurance and thinks of anything else but having this woman in his arms. It's bad enough to be close to her, to smell her and be tempted by that damn freckle on the tip of her lip but now, he's expecting to 'procreate' with her. He may deserve punishment for his evil deeds but this is going too far. How is he expected to pretend to make love to a woman he's craving with every single microcell of his being? He can't cross that line. Not when she's others to hold and love. Not when he's too dirty to even kiss her feet. But she seems to be under the delusion that he's a good man. The look in her eyes show feelings of love and belief and the sight is killing him because he knows it will soon be destroyed.

When someone from his past resurfaces he'll have to sacrifice himself for the good of those around him and he does so willingly, just to know that the heroine is safe. However, she has other plans. She can't let him go, no matter how little he may think of himself, to her, he's the hero she needs.

I simply adore this series. I love the end of the world sexy environment that produce strong but vulnerable men and capable and intelligent women. Though the heroine may not be that badass fighter like the other females in this series but what she lacked in that department she made up for in brilliance. She's very tech savvy and quick on her feet in problem situations and she is also a stubborn little thing when it came to showing the hero her true feelings. She may not be experienced but she's able to tempt the hero like nothing else. And she is the only thing that tempts him from the stoic demeanor he holds himself to. I really liked him. He was very Darryl from Walking Dead- the hair, the resourcefulness and the quiet personality that hide a true warrior underneath. He didn't think he deserved love and was willing to shun himself from the temptation of the heroine because of it. The chemistry between them was off the charts and while I was rooting for them 100%.... I was still tempted my Theo getting his own story. For once, the love triangle was a believable thing because honestly, I would have been just as happy if she choice the other man. Let's hope he gets his one tale because he's a sweet man. Anyway, this was another success in my books and I recommend it to fans of post-apocalyptic romance with a damaged hero and a inexperience heroine. This was magic for sure.

So this story leads off not too long after book 1. Fascinating and intricate storyline which mainly pertains to finding anything they can about Remington Truth.

Simon is a very mysterious man, more so than the other guys. In his “old life” he was a thug, a lethal bodyguard for a mobster. Known as a person who can easily blend into the shadows (hah...how perfect is his invisibility power for him?). He's an observer and a man of very little words. He notices Sage, the recluse, bookworm (yay, I love that) computer junkie and Envy's town blacksheep. As fate has it, they have quite a few incidents during the beginning which ultimately lead to a field trip. Simon wasn't exactly given a choice and accompanied Sage as they went undercover to a new settlement called Falling Creek. The new location happened to be where Sage hails from. Readers learn that it served as a commune with the purpose of procreating. The founders turned out to be Marck's grandfather (Ian's ancestors) and the Corrigan brothers (Sage's ancestors) who were run out of Envy soon after the Change. They find new leads on Truth and the Strangers which basically make up the overall story.

Simon and Sage make a very sweet pair. As mentioned before, they were undercover...as a married couple...in a breeding compound. Uh, yeah. Because of the circumstances, they had to act extremely intimate with each other in the confines of their very own bedroom. As disgusting as it is, they were being observed by the men of the town. But not everything is an act. They had this quiet brewing attraction that sizzled. I love how he's the reformed bad guy trying so hard to do the right thing but Sage, the smart geeky hermit, makes him lose control and breaks down his walls. He finally submits to his feelings and I love how Sage takes a chance on him. My problem would be the overkill with Theo. Ware was walking a fine line with the triangle. It kind of killed the mood every time he was brought up. As I've said before, triangles are a plot device I despise especially when the one left out is a good guy. Theo seemed so heartbroken when he found out Sage didn't feel the same way. I want him to get his own book in this series.

A woman Simon never from before the Change, Florita Tatiane gave new insight on details leading up to the incident. The crystal comes from deep down in the depths of the earth and yes the Cult of Atlantis is involved. An apparent $50 million buy-in was required but even that was strictly by invitation only. The crystals served as a payment for the help they added. The leader, we find out, is Remington Truth but apparently he betrayed the group.

Everything pertaining to the Resistance, the Change, Cult of Atlantis, etc. fascinates me to no end. What is that new piece of land in the Pacific that was created after the Change? Who is on the boat off the coast? What is the deal with the human trafficking? How do these crystals work exactly? Where are the Strangers...Remington Truth? How did this start? There are plenty of other questions, my head spins...I love it though. The story arc really makes the books so compelling.

Random things to note:
+ I want to believe Ian Marck is good. Yes, he hasn't exactly had the best reputation but I think he'll change over a new leaf.
+ Really interesting blog entries by Julie Davis Beecher, someone who survived the Change. She tells of how people were dropping dead for no reason. I'm not sure what to think about that just yet.
+ A little twist on who Remington Truth is, something I was not expecting.
+ I love the random POVs from Quent. Interesting that he has gotten his own in here as well as in book one. I think his own story will be riveting and I'm so excited to get to it.

I have known Joss/Colleen (since the cat's now out of the bag) for a LONG time. I remember when she introduced this series, and yes, it's taken me this long to get to it. I'm a lousy friend -- or maybe not, since I'm really freaking hard when I sit down to write reviews.

This series is some serious crazysauce, and I like that. REALLY like it. Crazysauce is where we get fresh ideas. Gangas and crystals and immortality and invisibility... it's like a playground of fun, child-like ideas (that's NOT an insult; there's something so innocent and wonderful in these ideas).

So what's my problem? Why didn't I love this as much as I loved the ideas?

I'm not sure. Maybe some of it is the insta-lust. A lot of it is definitely Theo's clinginess to Sage; I can't stand when a man with romantic intents can't appreciate a woman's abilities and talents and skills, and he's right up there in that regard. Glad Simon wasn't the same.

And some of it... the whole thing with the dude and the archer chick. Fatima/Tatiana. And, of course, all the questions that a post-apocalyptic society brings. Some of these answers are satisfactory, some aren't.

So it was a good read and definitely met my goals: a fun, fast read that'd close out my 2021 reading challenge here on Goodreads. But a series I'm going to make sure I read start to finish? Nah.

However, if you do, tell me what happens.

I really enjoyed this one too. To me, Simon wasn't as hot as the author's heroes usually are. But I really loved Sage. She was gentle, but not useless. When people tried to coddle her, she got pretty pissed. One of the main reasons she fell for Simon was that he treated her like the intelligent woman she was.

There are several editing issues and some odd plot jumps but over all a good book. I am quite intrigued by the concept and world building. That said I was interested in how Sage's origin worked into the new world. There were some things that bothered me but overall an enjoyable story.

Really enjoyed this book set in an interesting, post-apocalyptic Las Vegas. Colleen Gleason originally published this series under the Joss Ware pen name, but I believe it's out under her own name now. I've always enjoyed her books.

Yes, I came back for more. After the detailed descriptions in the first book, I was anxious to see what happened with the set of main characters. I enjoyed this one more because the world had already been established so it was more story oriented than worldbuilding.

Simon is one of six men who passed out in a cave and woke up to a different world fifty years later. Only he isn't one of Elliot's friends. No one's sure how he ended up there with them. And the girl he has his eye on has caught someone else's eye.

Simon's another of the angsty guys. He believes he doesn't deserve good. But luckily, he's not so angsty that he can't be an enjoyable character.

Sage is also a little angsty. But also a fun character. And she's very much attracted to Simon. But he seems determined to keep her at arms' length. However, when she and Simon end up stuck together in a strange place, she knows its her chance to convince him to be hers. Dun dun duuunnnnn.

Book two picks up where Beyond the Night (book 1) left off. The settlement of Envy (New Vegas or NV) is where Simon Japp and his four companions have taken up residency. The five men were kept in some type of stasis or coma in the caves of Sedona for the past 50 years. During that time things have changed dramatically and the world they knew is gone. Now the men are helping the residents fight the Strangers who are trying to enslave the remaining humans.

Simon Japp is a hero with a dark past. He's trying to get away from that past of lawlessness and start fresh. The chance to redeem himself happens when he meets up with a group of people that are trying to form a rebellion against the Strangers. Simon is willing to use his special ability to help with setting up a computer network and searching for Remington Truth, the man who might have the answers about what happened 50 years ago. Simon also finds himself attracted to Sage Corrigan, computer wiz and resident of Envy. Sage works with Theo and Lou Waxnicki, twin brothers who were alive when the Change happened. They're computer geniuses and are working on setting up a new Internet for this new world.

Sage Corrigan came to Envy from the settlement of Falling Creek. What we find out about Falling Creek isn't good. It's basically a polygamist settlement with men having multiple wives and the main focus for women is procreation. It really gave me an icky feeling when Sage tells of her numerous siblings and the plans that the council elders had very Sage before she got out. Sage is now twenty-eight and has established herself in Envy, developing strong friendships with Jade (heroine of book 1) Theo and Lou. Sage was certainly likable and definitely a survivor.

The search for Remington Truth sends Simon and Sage to Falling Creek. There they learn more about each other while Simon's trying to curb his growing attraction to Sage. I did like the developing relationship between these two I just wish Simon had stopped with his "I'm not good enough for you" mantra. He really needed to just get past his, well past, and realize that the times have changed and this is his chance to make a profound change in his life. Sage was intrigued by her attraction to Simon but also torn because there was someone else that she knew had strong feelings for her.

Once again I found myself fascinated by the post-apocalyptic world Ware has created. It's weird reading about a place I've been to many times (Vegas), and having it described in such different terms. No bright lights or the sound of slot machines filling the air. Instead there is a community of people who live, work and relax all within the secured city of Envy. Most of them live in what's left of the hotel, New York, New York and they all work together to keep the city running with everyone helping out in whatever capacity they can. I liked reading about the workings and politics of the city. How things have evolved from the disasters of 50 years ago when people were in shock and just trying to survive to having working, self-sustaining communities.

I did like book 2 a bit more than the first book. With both, my interest was still more focused on the world and the rebellion than the romance. There are still a number of characters I want to read about, one is a bad guy who is possibility reformed but then maybe not. I don't know but after reading Embrace the Night Eternal I know I'll be reading his book, if he gets one. So, still interested in this series but I don't think the romance is the strongest part of the book. It's more the world building and the cast of characters that I enjoy reading about.

embrace-the-night-eternal-envy-chronicles-joss-wareIn the second installment of Joss Ware’s Envy Chronicles we find Sage unexpectedly receiving attention from Theo, who’s making it quite clear that he wants to become more than friends. Sage feels the relationship shifting, but isn’t exactly sure that she likes it. Simon also has a thing for her, but for the most part keeps it under wraps.

But when their search for Remington Truth leads the group back to Sage’s roots, they know that she is the perfect person to go searching for answers. They all agree that it isn’t safe for her to go alone, and when she volunteers Simon for the task he has no choice, but to go along with it. The duo infiltrates the reproduction minded community posing as husband and wife, who want to join in their efforts to repopulate the human race. And, with it being a polygamous sect there are quite a few young girls with their eyes on Simon!

But when Simon’s past comes calling he has to choose between the woman he has fallen for of the safety of hundreds. And, Sage must choose between the comfort she feels with Theo or the passion she feels for Simon, knowing that in the end someone will be hurt.

I have to say that I thoroughly enjoyed this book. It was such a vast improvement over the first installment, Beyond the Night, that it’s hard to fathom that they are even written by the same person! The world has been explained in-depth to the reader in the previous book, so this book was able to delve into the emotional side of things, which I absolutely loved!

The love triangle between Sage, Theo, and Simon was great. Sage struggled with hurting Theo, but a life with him wouldn’t bring her the passion that Simon could. But I think my favorite part of the love triangle was Simon’s thoughts about Theo and how he was handling things with Sage. And, I loved his nicknames for Theo; Geek Squad and Dragon Boy. It made me laugh every time he referred him that way! But the guy on the cover of this book looked nothing like the Simon that was described within the pages!

There was definitely a lot of action in this book as well. Simon and Sage were always having to duck some pursuer or threat to them. And, once this story picked up, I didn’t want to stop reading it. The post-apocalyptic aspect of this book is almost non-existent as the characters’ environment really takes a backseat to the story that’s going on around them. Which was good news for me since I’m not a fan of the world has ended type of storylines.

Also, I thought Simon’s special ability was really cool!

But what about the community of Falling Creek? Can you say creepy? They are way to up in each other’s business for my taste and the cameras? Ewwwww! I also couldn’t imagine sharing my husband like all the women there do. No thanks! I guess I’m just selfish that way!

Ware definitely redeemed herself in my eyes with this book and I hope the series continues at this speed! Zoë and Quent are next and I can’t wait, as I’ve loved the little snippets we’ve gotten from them so far!

Being book two in a series, and having the basic background set up already, I was able to get into Embrace the Night Eternal quicker than Beyond the Night. After finding out that the zombie-like gangas aren’t calling for ruuuuth but in fact calling for Remington Truth, the Resistance knows that they need to find Truth and how he’s linked to the Change and the Strangers.

A tip leads the group to believe there may be answers found in Falling Creek, a settlement that years ago broke off from the original group in Envy. They are the group that believed repopulation of the human race was the most important thing after the Change, so they left Envy and formed a community where men have multiple wives and their main focus is procreation.

Lou and Theo Waxnicki’s fellow computer hack Sage comes from, and years ago escaped from, Falling Creek. She knows that she’s the best person to get back in, unfortunately that means confronting things in her past that she’d rather just leave alone. Sage is ready to get out of hiding behind her computer all day, so she’ll do what needs to be done.

Of the five men who came out of that cave in Sedona, Simon Japp was kind of the odd man out. He wasn’t associated with Elliott and his group of friends when he went in, and once they woke up to a world of destruction, his reason for being there kind of faded into the background. In Embrace we learn who Simon Japp really is, and we learn that even with the destruction of the world he’s still trying to escape from his past.

I would say the thing that I like most about this series so far is the world. The mystery behind the Change keeps getting more twisted. Just when something makes sense, another bit of information is revealed that completely changes my perspective. It is extremely interesting and Joss Ware has done a great job here. There’s also some subtle headway made on why the cave survivors came away with the powers they did.

What irritated me a lot with the book is the fact that people kept trying to make decisions for Sage. Seemingly, she doesn’t ‘know what’s good for her’ and needs others to step in and push her in the right direction (please note the sarcasm). Simon is the biggest perpetrator of this. While he is more open to Sage’s ability to help with the investigation, he takes two steps back in the fact that he tries to nudge her towards another man when he starts to feel too much for Sage. Simon is still remorseful over events in his past and doesn’t feel he deserves to be cared about–and vice versa. Considering the backdrop of Eternal takes place in a community that values more the act of reproducing than any loving bond formed between partners. I think there should have been more distinction between that and the forming relationship between our two leads, because despite my irritations, I like Sage and Simon together. Things just didn’t play out to my satisfaction.

Regardless of my irritations, Joss Ware has set up some interesting developments for the next book.

No sooner did I finished the first book in The Heroes of New Vegas series then I immediately dove into Embrace the Night. It’s just as exciting, if not more than, the first book. Book one was all about ‘OMG what happened!’ for the five guys from the past. Book two feels like a aftershock. How did we get here and how we survive? The who/what’s/why’s are keeping me up all night reading.

Simon and Sage. Why am I not surprised they end up together. They both have pasts they would rather forget. Both assured in their skills but neither are exactly able to fit into the lives they find themselves living. Yes these two go together like peas and carrots. Their romance is a entertaining one for me. Watching things unfold between them is sweet at times and at others I found frustratingly funny. And when they pose as a married couple to try to find info to help the Resistance, you just knew things were going to get interesting. A note on the romance, or lack of thereof, I see some people griping about in other reviews. This is a rough, sometimes violent new world. If you honestly think sexy, steamy romance would be dripping off the pages, then you’re crazy. This is a world where people are trying to survive and I can’t help but feel Ms. Ware has hit the right amount of romance in this post-apocalyptic story.

Here’s what I’m truly enjoying about the series; everything is still a mystery. Colleen Gleason has created this amazing world and instead of spelling everything out right away, you get to experience it with the five guys from the past. It’s so easy to feel their shock and surprise as each piece of the new civilization they find themselves in is exposed for what it once was. Envy – NV – New Vegas – Las Vegas. As in life, there are no clear simple answers here. As one layer of the story is exposed, there are still more unanswered questions. The allure of the mystery, the unknowing and the surviving will keep me coming back for each book in this series. I really don’t mind that I’m still kept guessing at the end of each book. I don’t feel like I have a lingering cliffhanger hangover instead I’m excited to discover what happens next. Maybe it’s because I live in Cali and I’ve had hanging over my head all my life the ‘Big One’ can happen at any time. Is this what survival will be like after? Would I make it in this new world? Although, it seems to be a moot point since California has fallen off the face of the earth and is now below the Pacific Ocean.

Note: The Heroes of New Vegas was formerly written as Joss Ware, and known as The Envy Chronicles which is where I first read this book.

I received this book from the JeepDiva for the express purposes of an honest review. The opinions and rating of this review are solely mine and in no way was I compensated.

Review reposted from my Smitten with Reading blog...

My Review:
Simon was the odd-man-out from the group of men that emerged from that cave in Sedona after 50 years. He was not part of the hiking group. No, he had gone in there to die. Simon was a bodyguard to a mafia crime boss, addicted to drugs and alcohol, and completely disgusted with where his life had led him. He was being chased by henchmen when he stumbled into the cave and had accepted that he was going to die...in fact, was ready for it. When he woke up 50 years later, he decided that this was his chance at a new beginning. No one from this group knows about his past and he is determined to make up for all the bad that he has done.

I didn't realize until I got to reflecting on this book for my review, but there is something really different about these books that I really like. While the books do change POV's between both the hero and heroine, you definitely get a LOT more into the psyche of the heroes. I love that!!!

Simon is infatuated/intrigued with Sage, but so is Theo, and Simon has a personal rule not to tread on another man's property, so as far as he is concerned, Sage is completely off-limits. That becomes much more difficult to maintain when he is suddenly posing as her husband in a commune that believes it is their responsibility to re-populate the world. Even if there were not the barrier of Theo in the relationship, Simon knows that he is not good enough for Sage. He has blood on his hands... a lot of it and, regardless of who he is today, nothing changes that fact.

I loved Simon's character. Regardless of his past, he is a good man who is trying to make up for his past sins. His sense of integrity and honor is so incredibly high. He has a very strong and rigid self-discipline which tells you just how hard his life has been up to now. He wants Sage with an ache that is palpable, but he refuses to give in. He gave his word to Theo that he would keep her safe and whole and he fully plans to do that.

Sage is an interesting character. She's an innocent that has grown up in a really different world. I found it funny about how perplexed she became with Theo's advances because she truly thinks of him as a brother. That doesn't mean that she is dismissive of his attention because she definitely is not...she's just not quite sure what to do with it. What she does know is that Simon's kisses affect her in a totally different way than Theo's do.

This was another fabulous installment in this series. Simon & Sage together are so explosive. The climatic scene between the two of them was nothing short of beautiful. There were several times throughout this book where I was gasping and dh was laughing about how I was reacting to the twists/turns of the story/suspense...that's when you know it's good! ;o)

Simon Japp has a dark past but after the Change years before, when the civilization fairly came to an end, he got a chance to turn a new leaf. Now he's part of a band of guys who fight against the Strangers, a group of deadly immortals who pretty much control this new world and are hell-bent on finding every one of them and killing them. After waking from a fifty-something-year sleep after the Change, he founds himself with a strange power that might just be the thing they need to fight the Strangers.

What Simon never counted on was meeting Sage Corrigan, a soft-spoken blue-eyed redhead who brings out feelings in him that he never thought he'd have. But in a world where there's practically no laws, the government, or what could pass for it, is a bunch of immortal weirdoes and zombies can hunt you, the last thing anyone could afford is to be soft. Sage and Simon work together fighting the Immortals and when they go on a mission posing as a couple to infiltrate a ring that could help their fight, their staged relationship might become more than just a lie.

Embrace the Night Eternal is the second book in Joss Ware's post-apocalyptic romantic suspense series. I highly recommend you read the first book, Beyond the Night, first because I didn't and I fully admit that I was completely lost in the beginning. Granted as the story progresses, there's enough back-story to know what's going on but I think that to be able to get the full effect of this series, it's important to read the books in order. Don't make my mistake! With that said, I thoroughly enjoyed Embrace the Night Eternal. Simon's such an interesting character with many facets to his persona. He can be a cold bastard when he's threatened or when needed but with Sage, he's incredibly caring. At first, I wasn't so sure about Sage. She seemed like a timid little thing who had been hiding in her computer lab for years. But soon enough, she becomes more assertive and my favorite character.

Although the character development was really awesome, the post-apocalyptic plot was what totally won me over! The descriptions of half-rumbling building covered in grass, empty broken roads and whole cities under water were great. I love post-apocalyptic settings and Embrace the Night Eternal was awesome to read. I definitely enjoyed the story, and I do want to go back and read book 1, just because I enjoyed this world so much and I'd like to read Drake and Jade's story. Embrace the Night Eternal is an apocalyptic thrill ride with awesome suspense and characters just come right off the page!

What a difference one book can make! After lukewarm feelings for Beyond the Night, I wasn't sure I wanted to read this book... especially since the lead character, Simon, didn't really spark much interest for me. But I'm really glad I did. Unlike the first installment in the Envy Chronicles, I felt real emotion for the characters --a connection I just didn't have the first time around.

The concept for the series: the world is 50 years past a near-apocalypse. Many of the survivors are living in what was once Las Vegas, NV, which is now called N-V or Envy. Creeping around at night are killer zombies called gangas... and pulling their strings are the nefarious Strangers, people who were once human, now made immortal by implanting special crystals in their bodies. It is likely they were behind the "Change" that sent the Earth into near ruin. Five men from 2010 now find themselves in this new world. They had gone exploring in an AZ cave and went into a kind of stasis for 50 years, awaking only 6 months before the events of the story. They had not aged, but instead came out stronger, each with a unique ability.

Simon was a crime lord's bodyguard in his old life. But he sees the Change as a chance to become a new man. He is attracted to Shea, a quiet computer whiz and member of the Resistance, trying to bring down the Strangers. But he thinks she is in a relationship with another man, so he refuses to pursue his feelings. Sage is something of an outcast in Envy, because she comes from a settlement that's like a breeding camp. She and Simon end up teaming up to infiltrate her old town to learn more about the one of the leaders of the Strangers. While they're there, it gets harder and harder to fight their growing attraction.

I really liked Simon. He's one of those men with a dark past and hopelessness about the future --but deep down he is a really good guy, worthy of love. I loved watching him fall in love with Sage and each time they get closer to acting on their feelings, the story gets hotter and hotter. This was a huge improvement over the last book and I'm sorry to see it end. Here's hoping the next book will be as good! 4 1/2 stars.
