Seventeen-year-old Eveline Fallon has lived her entire life on the move—and she hates it.
Believing her to be the fulfillment of an ancient prophecy, her parents have done whatever it takes to stay one step ahead of those who wish to see her dead in order to keep the prophecy unfulfilled and the doorway between the worlds closed.
But Eveline isn’t fully convinced that her parents’ beliefs match her own. What she does believe is that Leadville, Colorado, and the sanctuary offered may be the chance she’s been waiting for.
The chance to be somewhere safe. The chance for her to make friends and have fun. The chance to finally date a guy.
The chance to be a normal girl, at least as normal as possible for someone not human.
I guess I need to start this review with HOLY MOLY, stop reading this review, and go buy this book!!! Not convinced? I was hooked by the 3% mark on my kindle! Okay, let me see what I can say to convince you without giving too much of this amazing book away. . .
The main character is Evy (Eveline), she’s in high school. The book starts out with her moving schools, again. My heart went out with her as she had moved so often she’d never really been able to make friends or put any roots down. As the story unfolds there’s good reason for this and at seventeen, she finally moves “home.” I hate weak heroines in a story and Evy can be described in many ways, WEAK is NOT one of the descriptors. This girl didn’t just roll with the punches. She’s found her way onto my favorite fictional heroines list!
She met Liam – and let’s just say no one could ever have a better friend, guardian, brother. Is it okay to totally have a crush on a fictional character? Chase enters the story and OMG, I melted!! (I think Evy did, too!)
The characters are well thought out, the plot is deeply layered, the dialog between the characters was natural, and the story? This has to be one of the most original stories I have ever read!! I thought I had an active imagination, I have nothing on Heather Self! Well done, Heather!! I’m proud to say I’m your newest fan and I will read everything you write from now on!! Hurry up and release the sequel!!
Actually it's 1.5 stars. Only becouse of awesome cover ( I know, I know I'm cover whore, sue me for that)
When I added this book to my TBR pile few months ago I thought this book will rock my world, I just hoped that it will be good, you know? Girl can dream.
But it isn't amazing, it isn't good, this book isn't even tolerable. IT IS JUST PLAIN HORRIBLE. You can't belive in my words? You really want to read this even if I say big NO? So go, buy it and then read it, and feel exactly this same as me. so disappointed you want to cry and sob: "why, why, why???????????????"
Intriguing, interesting, original and unique! An amazing fantasy, and very cute at moments (and hot.. *cough cough*) AND WAY. WAY. TOO. MANY HOT GUYS. Seriously, unnatural. *passes out* Not that I'm complaining. x). I NEED MORE. I. MUST. KNOW. MORE.
I've always said that what sells a book, for me, are the characters. And it's not as simple as, I like these characters, I don't like these characters. In fact, if I have strong feelings of any sort towards a character, then the author has most likely accomplished their job. If I don't care about the characters, however, then I won't care about the book. And I did indeed enjoy these characters.
My favorite part was the large family atmosphere. I've grown up in one, and I've always thought that siblings make life more fun ^_^ And while not everyone in the book might be related by blood, the sense of union and merriment (and harassment xD) found in a family is woven through the characters. And as for the characters that are not strictly family...well, there are plenty of friends and potential more-than-friends. Each friendship develops and is explained. Heather does a good job with the "show not tell" aspect of her writing. And I know a lot of people want to know about the 'suitors,' but I'm wary of spoilers. Let's just say that I generally don't read many books with 'suitor' in the plural, and like them. While the boys in this book are pretty great, I'll admit I'm still undecided about what to think of them. But the fact that there was more than one boy did NOT bother me for once, which I definitely consider a plus.
And since the characters have been explained away, I can now talk about other aspects of the story. The story itself was pretty awesome. Princess Bride, Star Trek, and Matrix references aside, it was pretty cool. The lore was the most unique part to me. And I still have a ton of questions....It's pretty clear that a lot of it is set up to be answered in the next book, which means more waiting...*le sigh.* But yes, there be dragons ;)
The plot is actually where I would dock points. I wanted to read this book because the first chapter I read way back in the winter intrigued me. But that's it. This is Heather's first book, and a first chapter is no way to judge an author. So my expectations were neither low nor high. And I can say, I honestly didn't expect to like this book as much as I did. I gushed. That only happens with my favorite books. Half of the books I read because they provide a distraction. The books I talk about, tumble about, write about, generally come from more well known series. I'm not saying always, nor am I saying I only read popular books; it just so happens that a lot of the books I like are popular. And some of them aren't. This book exceeded expectations. However, I did notice some stylistic errors that might just stem from being a first book. No plot holes, but there was the occasional grammar error. The biggest thing that caused me to give 4 stars instead of 5 was the fact that I had a hard time differentiating between the "middle" and the "end." But stylistic things can easily be fixed.
And something important to mention before I finish, this is not a black and white book. It has shades of grey. It explores shades of grey. I think that's important to see in a book, because in real life, nothing is black and white. Everyone has good and bad in them, and it's how their choices that show what kind of person they really are. So it made me happy to see this book talk about that.
So, thank you to Heather for writing this, and I can't wait to read your next one!
My Take: I'm going to go ahead and start by saying, CONGRATULATIONS HEATHER on your debut novel! I was fortunate to get a sneak peak at the book a while back and definitely liked what I read. I was highly anticipating the release of the final product. I must say, it blew my expectations out of the water. I really like dragon stories if done well. This one was. I fell for all of the characters.
I immediately liked Eveline. She's led a somewhat unusual life. Eveline has kaleidoscope eyes and streaks in her hair, so she's seen as somewhat of an outcast in school. On top of that, she's had to move around a bit. Therefore, she's never really made any close friends. All of that changes when she moves to Colorado. I loved the fact that she was different. She was her own person and wasn't intimidated by others. Eveline has a great sense of humor too.
Let's talk about the boys. We're first introduced to Liam. He's charming and attractive, but I liked him like a brother or friend. Chase, on the other hand, made my bones feel like liquid. He's Australian, tall, gorgeous, snarky, and nearly perfect. I felt like Chase matched Evy well. There was plenty of tension between the two. I couldn't wait until he kissed her. The build up drove me nuts (in a good way). Then there is Kieran. Ok, what's better than one hot guy in a book, TWO hot guys. Now, Kieran is supposed to be the enemy, but he feels drawn to Evy. I won't go into what happens or why, but let's just say that the feeling is mutual. I mean, how's a girl to decide??? For those of you who don't like love triangles, at this point, there is a purpose for both boys being in her life and you will like them both. So, I didn't feel sick about it. It's really hard to see who will be best for her in the end right now.
I want to briefly mention the supporting characters in the story. I loved them all. There is a purpose to each character. I loved Jenna's loyalty and heart. Kai was a perfect addition to the group. I knew when I met her that she was special. She has a great personality. She's smart, sensitive, and honest to a fault at times. I really look forward to seeing these characters grow into the story more.
As for the story....I felt the story was well thought out and developed nicely. I didn't find any loop holes in the story and was able to follow along easily. The ending was perfect. It leaves the reader wanting more. I really can't wait to read the next book in the trilogy. So I say again, well done Heather. I think you nailed it.
Quick and easy read with equal amounts of adventure, twist, magic, romance in it!
Evy is the 'one'..the prophecy girl to open a portal between two worlds and a chance to go back from where she came from..a non human land.
Her eyes swirls in four colors so is her multi streaked colored hair due to her mixed genes which makes her appearance more than human n normal!
Now that she has burden of prophecy on her shoulders Evy can't understand what and how to do and the stupid linings of prophecy are not so easy to understand and so is the undeniable attraction towards Chase.
She has to act normal, train normal, keep out her brother from her weird mind connection, fight the bitchy girls, stop the flirtious chase from breaking her heart, wait for her 18th bday and transition, solve the prophecy and oh did i mention the hot bad boy nerada 'kieran' that makes her all mushy just with a touch?
Yeah life is not so easy and now she thinks there's trouble with her new human friend kai..who turns out to be more than human..?
I loved the book..though i really wanted more from this one...i think this has done fairly well introducing the history and background ..now i hope this progresses and we can see more action, triangle love :P),more magic and romance in next one.
Have to say ..Heather u sure outdid urself and it was a great debut !!!! Sri.
I really loved this book and it was so hard to put down! And oh man, that ending! I NEED THE NEXT BOOK!
Evy is a seventeen year old girl that is from another planet, but her kind has been stuck on earth forever. There is a prophesy that talks about "the One" that will save them and open the portal back to home. She is the One. The prophesy has a few others that are mentioned to help her, the Guardian, the Dark, and the Keeper. They are trying to figure out the prophesy and who is involved so everything can be solved. So Evy, who has traveled all over the world with her family to stay in hiding, finally gets to settle in Colorado, where she is waiting until she is eighteen so she can go through her "transition", and she meets others like her along the way. Are you confused yet?? The book isn't confusing but I feel like my description is;)
This book has three guys that are so wonderful and spectacular and you just want one. There is Liam, Chase and Kieran, and you will just have to read to see where they all fit in. And there is Jenna and Kai that become great friends with Evy. And the romance is delicious and teasing, and leaves you needing the next book!
Ok, so if I had to describe this book in a few short words it would be this...seriously original awesome urban fantasy. Evy's race has been stranded on Earth for 2,000 years. She is only 17 years old and her family hopes she is the One, the savior of her race that was prophesied about thousands of years ago. One of the things I liked most about this book was that Evy's family did not try to hide who or what they were from their daughter. I mean, how many books have you read where the main character's purpose was deliberately kept from him/her? It was really refreshing.
So, let's talk about romance. And boy, is there some romance in this book! I have a love/hate relationship with love triangles. There are two seriously HAWT boys who are vying for Evy's attention. First, let me talk about Chase! (OH MY GOODNESS!) *dreamy sigh* Chase is another member of the Kin and is 300 years old. He is actually Evy's half-brother's older brother. (really not too confusing!). It's apparent that he is interested in Evy, but he has reservations about getting romantically involved with her. He remains distant until the competition comes onto the scene.
Enter, Kieran. Hot, Irish, motorcycle riding, Kieran. Kieran is Narada, the sworn enemy of the Kin. There is more to this guy than meets the eye, literally. Evy instantly has a connection with him that is H-O-T. Now, what girl wouldn't love to have the attentions of an Aussie and Irishman? AGAIN, *dreamy sigh*...
Let's not forget about Liam, Jenna, and Kai. Liam is Evy's older half-brother and sworn protector. He's swoon-worthy in his own right. Jenna and Kai become the best friends Evy has looked for her entire life. They are all great supporting characters.
I love how this book reads a lot like a movie. I could picture the scenes in my head as I read them. There were enough twists and turns and action scenes that make it a very quick, and enjoyable read. I reallly cannot wait for the next book in the series.
My only problem with this book is that it was too short!! Plus the ending was pretty abrubt and I'm screaming in my head "NOOOOOO!" I feel like I had just gotten to the exciting part of the story and then BAM it's over, so I really can't wait for the next one.
And the BOYS! Damn, Heather knows how to create some pretty swoon worthy male leads! At this point, I think I'm all for Keiran but I do have a soft spot for Chase. It's just so hard to decide!
I don't know who edited this book, or if it's just the ebook itself, but there were a lot of missing words. Hopefully either amazon or the editor can polish up this book.
I really don't like stories where all the male characters are in love with the lead female character or the opposite. Like there are no other female characters in the book and it's really really hard for her to choose just one ugh!!!.
This was THAT kind of story. Although the idea was a good one, I found the execution quite messy. However, I am curious to know what happens next and will be waiting for book 2.
I really liked this book but I am very disappointed that the trilogy was never finished (it’s been almost ten years) and it will likely never be finished. The author doesn’t even write books nowadays and I can’t even find this book on Amazon anymore.
I wouldn’t suggest reading this, unless you’re a fan of unfinished series. But again it’s unlikely you’ll even be able to find a copy to read. Just a fair warning...
I loved this book Eveline is an awesome character. An way to go Heather I don't think there can ever be to many hot guys in one book! I love that!! I love the story and the love triangle an I really don't care who she ends up with they are both hot an beautiful an drool worthy. I can't wait for the next book it's going to be amazing. I neeeed the next book
I wanted to give this more stars, but I'm seriously annoyed. I went to get the next book in the trilogy after this one left off on a cliffhanger, but there isn't a next book. And this book was published 13 years ago so I'm assuming there won't be a next book. Irritated that I wasted my time but shame on me for not looking into it before starting this book I guess 💁♀️🤦♀️
"Besides, I do love to play knight in shining armour to a beautiful damsel in distress."
When I first heard that my good friend Heather Self had a book out I instantly just needed to read it. She is totally awesome so I knew her book was going to be amazing. But... I was in no way prepared for the awesomeness of this book. I can barely speak right now. There are no words to explain just how much I adored this book. It completely blew me away.
Eveline is a Kin, a dragon and she has been moved from place to place all her life in order for her parents to protect her. They believe she is 'The One' that an age-old prophecy fortold about. The One who can save her whole race. Evi finds herself moving to Leadsville, a place full of Kin who will help protect her but a place where secrets that have been kept for her entire life come poaring out. Will Evi be able to finally believe in herself and that she does have the power to save everyone? And will she finally be able to have a normal life?
I really loved this book. I fell head-over-heels in love with it right from the start. I haven't really read that many books about Dragons so when I heard it was about dragons I instantly wanted to read it. This is without a doubt the most original Dragon book I have ever read in my life. It's just amazing. I am in love with this book and Heather's writing is just incredible. I was sucked in right from the first page and just couldn't put it down. I just had to keep reading and find out what was going to happen. There were so many twists and turns that I did not see coming at all and I was left completely gobsmacked with my jaw on the floor going WHAT?!?!
I really loved that Evi's parents were really honest with her. There is a lot of YA books where the lead character has to figure everything out for themselves and do not have a lot of help discovering everything. In The One Evi has really supportive parents who will help her with anything and sat and explained the prophecy and helped her come to terms with everything. I really loved that about this book. I love Evi she is such an awesome character. I really loved how much she grew as a character throughout the book. She went from not believing she was The One to believing she was and starting to work towards figuring out the prophecy.
The One is without a doubt the only book in existence where I cannot choose between the guys. First we have Chase. Oh Lord... I love Chase so damn much. He is flirty and cheeky and I fell head-over-heels in love with him. There are just no words to explain how much I completely love him. All the way through the book I was adament that she has GOT to end up with Chase because he's just so swoon-worthy and perfect. He is right up there with Aiden from JLA's Covenant series. He reminded me of Aiden so much and as everyone knows Aiden is my fave fictional boy... EVER!
BUT... then we met Kieran and I am just in love with him too. He is the typical drool-worthy bad-boy and I was just so torn. I love Chase so much but Kieran is equally as drool-worthy and sweet and perfect and now I just don't know who I love more. They are both perfect but I think I prefer Chase a little more. Chase just stole my heart. But I love them both!
The One is one of the best debuts I have ever read and I loved every single moment of it. I am left reeling dying to know what is going to happen next... Okay... Yes I just wanna read more of Chase and Kieran! I cannot wait for book 2 to be released and I will be happy dancing for sure when I finally get my hands on it. A fantastic start to a promising series.

My Summary:
At seventeen and in her senior year of high school, Eveline should be enjoying her life. Not so much since this is her sixth school in four years as her parents have tried to keep them one step ahead of those that seek to kill her. What'd she ever do to them? Yeah, pretty much be born. She's the ONE or so her parents tell her. The one that supposed to fulfill an ancient prophecy to save her race by reopening a portal. Oh not the human race, her race - the kin. Add to that three hot boys that are ALL very interested in her and she may not survive her senior year.
My Thoughts:
4 1/2 stars - So many sexy boys in this one!
I so wasn't supposed to be reading this book. No I had a paperback I was working on for a review. It's all my son's fault. I got stuck waiting for him with no book! Aw but I had my phone and as I scrolled through the books on my kindle app, this one jumped right up and yelled READ ME. Well, who am I to ignore the plea of a book? So I downloaded it and sat reading and waiting. As it turns out, my son arrived way too quickly. Yep I was stuck in this book. We went home and I pretty much read the book over the next 12 hours or so, interrupted by family things but still.
If you follow me on twitter, you may have seen the many quotes that I shared from this one. Some fabulous one liners in this read. If you missed them, here they are.
“Who knew when we met her that she was going to be such a bossy bit of goods?”
“Somebody mention snarky comments and sarcasm? I’m so your girl!”
“As your fun fairy I want you to do more than survive. I’ll have to see what I can do about that.”
“Gorgeous Australian who speaks perfect French. I’m not dead people. That’s like hotness on a stick.”
I guess I've got a little snarky in me cause I loved all those. This book pulled me and I quickly devoured it. Love Evy. She's strong and well trained but the whole being the one thing is not really working for her. I really liked how she wasn't willing to just go along with things - she needed the details. And as she is facing her transition, her parents are finally give them to her. Which brings up the world building. Aliens. We are talking aliens here. That's not a common paranormal creature in YA. Short green and spooky just isn't sexy but these aliens have elemental powers and they are all kinds of sexy. Needless to say, this book has a great new twist on the popular elemental world.
Must talk about ALL the sexy hot boys this book has in it! Dang. There's the very protective Liam, the flirty Chase, and the mysterious Kieran <-------HOW can one book hold so many sexy guys???? The romance in this story is not the real focus but there's so much sexual tension between these characters that fanning is required while reading. When a kiss finally happened, I was like...um...dang! Was that the one I wanted to kiss her????? I have no idea which team I'm on. Need more time with one of these boys to figure him out and then I'll know. Which means, I NEED BOOK TWO - like 5 days ago!!!!!
So, yeah, I'm WAITING for the next one and I will for sure be picking it up as soon as I can. But, you know, these authors like to torture us readers just as much as their characters. Heather put up a teaser for book two and that so didn't help.
"He ran his hands up and down my arms, while resting his forehead on my own. In a choked voice he whispered, "I just...I can't tell you that yet, Evy. Please don't ask me to."
See what I mean???? Um....if you like the paranormal world in YA then this book MUST get read and soon!!!
The One is the first instalment in The Portal Trilogy by author Heather Self. I stumbled upon this book while I was browsing away on Valerie's blog Stuck In Books- the post was called "Eve and Chase from THE ONE review Obsidian". Although I had not heard of The One before, seeing Obsidian in the title roped me right in- and I'm so glad it did! Without that post, I may have never gotten the privilege of reading this fantastic and hot novel! The One should be on everyone's to-be-read list :)
Evy and her parents have spent years running away from the Nerada. Being a Kin (aka. dragon) that possess all four elemental powers has made Evy predicted to be the One, and as she approaches her transition, the target on her back grows larger. As she and her family settle down in Leadville, Evy is forced to handle the duty that is expected of her, a discovery of a long lost family member, and the struggle of deciding between two boys she can't help but be attracted to. Evy's character was for the most part very enjoyable. Her sense of humor and determination made her a strong character that I think many readers will connect with.
Of course, what's a book without a few smokin' males- and yes, I said males.....as in plural hotness *cheers for plural-ness* We are first introduced to the protective Liam. The relationship between the newly found siblings was adorable and flippin hilarious! I loved any scene with Liam in it! My favourite character by far was Chase *sighs* The chemistry between this sexy Australian and Evy was the type of hotness that will have you giggling and smiling. I can't wait to see what moves Chase will pull in an attempt to win Evy over- I'm sure it will bring some more awesome swooning! The last hottie in this novel is Kieran. Although I'm sure many girls will fall in love with this bold and swoon worthy character- he was my least favourite character of the book (probably because he's a major threat to my hope of a Chase and Evy duo)! I think if his character would have been introduced a little bit earlier on, and if there wasn't a major insta-love thing between him and Evy, I could have liked his character. But for now, I'm Team Chase forever :P
The only thing I wish was different about this book was the climax. The highest, most exciting part of the book happened a little to late, and a little to quickly in my opinion. Having Evy not even part of the "fight sequence" made the scene lack intensity. Not to mention that I would think having Evy come face to face with a Nerada would be the perfect way for her to see how dangerous they really are- I think Evy needs that fire in her. That being said, the ending left us with quite an unexpected discovery that I'm looking forward to unravelling in book two!
All her life Evy has been on the run, moving periodically once her parents felt there was a danger. You see, they believe that she is The One. She however, rolls her eyes at this and kinda just rolls with whatever. Not really believing her folks.
They move in the middle of her senior year but promise tat this si the last place they are going to be moving to. So once settled Evy starts to make friends, Jenna and Kai. She discover that she has an older brother, Liam. She did not remember him but soon gets her memories back. Of course, she has two swoon worthy guys that are fighting for her affections.
I absolutely adore Evy. She rocks with awesomeness- from telling everyone they are crazy to telling off the guy who rejected her. She is amazing. The best part is once she accepts that they may be right, she demands that they get on board with her.
Now it would not be a paranormal romance without the romance part. Evy has not one but two hotties trying for her love.
Guy #1 Chase Just so you know I am team Chase all the way. There I said it- I gave my disclosure. Chase is a hottie from down under. One whom understands responsibilities at the cost of one’s happiness. He does take his responsibilities seriously. Too bad though, he kinda well pushes Evy away. Fingers and toes are crossed that he can fix this.
Guy #2 Kieran Reminder- I am team Chase. First of all he is suppose to be the enemy, a Nerada. They typically want to kill Evy- instead he just wants to kiss her. Plus he seems a little too team Evy for me. Something about his eagerness rubs me the wrong way. But I hear he makes a good breakfast.
I adore this book. Heather’s debut novel rocked my world and I for one could not put it down. I’m biting my nails waiting for the second one to come out. Knowing Heather the second book will blow our minds. I just hope (hint, hint, wink, wink) that Chase will get the gal in the end.
Seriously, one of the best novels from a debut author that I have read this year.
I have been waiting to read this for just a bit *note not as long as some* but yeah. I had a feeling it was going to be Awesome.... I was Totally Right! This is Heather's Debut novel and she hit it out of the park.
Great story line and executed very well! Within the first 2 or 3 chapters you fall into it no problem. I was also like #Woah at one point, not mad but GREAT writing :) You will see...
Eveline *shorting to E* is a great character! She is sheltered in some ways, but she is not a brat. She is not perfect, but flawed and real. E has had it ruff moving from here to there and that has helped build her into the person she is. I got her right off, and really like her! From her Amazing colored eyes to the really Cool multi-colored hair she rocks.
Liam is a Smokin character... The instant that he is introduced I liked him. He is smart, funny and Loyal above all else. He takes what he is and does very seriously. He cares deeply for those in his family and his friends. I was infatuated from go.
Then we meet Chase and I went *swoony* yes! I did... What a great character! He had me at go! Tall, smart, fun, strong and Loyal with an attitude... and he's Australian *swoon* Everything about him even his flaws made me goo.
*Told Heather this was my Chase*
The other characters in this book are all so well written and whole. They are not just background fillers. They each have their own personalities and you can tell they were all well thought out. The whole story has that feel.. Well thought out and planned. Everything flows really well and there are no gaping holes in the story. LOVED IT!!
I actually have her My Queen of Swoon title along with Shelly Crane...
No seriously she totally earned it! You must check this book out and see for yourself!!
The One by Heather Self took me by complete surprise, as the sixth book on my #UtopYA2014 reading list, I don’t know why I have any expectations at all. The bar keeps continuously getting raised.
The first part of this book was a little difficult to relate to initially. A lot happens and the reader is immediately immersed into Eveline’s world. I think the first thing that threw me off was the first hot guy she runs into ends up being related to her so it’s a little disconcerting when it seems like the author is developing a romantic relationship and it becomes clear that those feelings are now considered incest. It was weird.
However, this book redeemed itself in a major way once it really got going. Once Eveline started finally meeting those love interests (yes, more than one! ), this book reached its fever pitch. It had me grinning ear to ear and trying to pick sides in this unique love triangle. This triangle really works because she has a chance to fall for each of them individually before it becomes a fighting match over her heart.
The setting for this story was really cool, especially the prophesy and the idea of transitioning. I was enthralled in Heather Self’s vision, and to me, it was totally believable. I really, really want to get my hands on the next book with that ending. It wasn’t a cliff hanger but it left the reader wanting more. There is so much more left to tell and I can’t wait to see how Eveline being “the one” works out and even more importantly, which guy captures her heart.
I first discovered Heather through twitter. I was following some other authors I love and they would converse back and forth with someone named Heather Self and she was talking about a book she was writing. I must admit, I first noticed her because we have the same last name (well, my maiden) and it's not very common. At least where I live. She would talk about her book, and give little hints, finally some teasers! By then, I was hooked and could not wait for this book to be released!!! It finally was and I grabbed it quickly, and read it just as quickly. I was not disapointed!! This book is amazing! First you meet Evy, she's seventeen years old and told she's The One. The one to fulfill a prophecy to save her race...She's had to move around a lot her whole life for her safety. She finally moves to a Colorado town and is looking for some time to be normal. Make friends, stay at one school, date...She makes a good friend in Jenna, a best friend who is there for her no matter what. Then... She meets Liam. He is very protective of her and always watches out for her. Next she meets Chase. Wow! Flirty, sexy Chase...I don't know how it can get better than Chase. Until you meet Kieren. Mysterious, possibly dangerous Kieren. Another Wow!! I don't know if which one to choose!!! The romance isn't the main focus of the book though. There is much family, good friends, and preparing for the role Evy has to play in the prophecy. This a great start to a series. I know I will eagerly await each installment!
I began talking to Heather Self on twitter. (She can be found @heatherself). At the time I thought she was just another book lover like me, until I figured out she was an author. *hangs head* I need to ask more questions when I am talking to people on Twitter. However, I purchased her book on Amazon but did not get to it right away. You know me ... the never ending "to-read" list. I should kick my own butt for not reading it the second I got it on my Kindle!
Best Part of Book: I just cannot pick one part or person that was the best. Evy is an outstanding character. I say that because the whole book was stupendous. Let's being with Evy who just wanted to be "normal", but was never really able to because she it "The One". Then there was Chase and Kieran. I loved them so much and I am still unsure which "Team" I am on. I really enjoyed the story line and their interactions together were great. Furthermore, I love how Heather has all the character entwined with each others' stories. It makes it more interesting.
Not So Great About the Book: THE ENDING!! Seriously, Heather....I mean COME ON!!! How am I going to survive until the next book with an ending like that? I guess I am just going to have to "stalk" Heather on Twitter until she gives up some teasers or a release date.
Eveline has moved from place to place her whole life as her parents struggle to keep her safe. See, Evy is not your normal 17 year old girl...there's this prophecy about how she's supposed to save her people. So naturally there are those who want to keep her from fulfilling this prophecy. But as she nears the age of transition her parents make the decision to settle her among other's of her own kind where they believe she will be safe. As she gets acclimated to her new school and makes friends for the first time in her life she also begins to discover more of who she is and what she's supposed to do. She wrestles with her destiny, with love and trying to find her place in the world as more than just the One.
I thoroughly enjoyed this book. With all the vampire, werewolves, angels and witches I was pleasantly surprised about the freshness of this novel. It was something new and different. It still maintains a lot of the trends for YA paranormal fiction, but it felt fresh. (Also, shout out to having present and fully involved parents who love their daughter--just saying.) There were a couple places where the story seemed to drag as Evy had to explain who and what she was, but overall the story had great pacing.
Suffice it to say, I am looking forward to the next two books in this trilogy.
So, I was really impressed for a debut novel. It was interesting, had strong characters and a decent plot line. I'm anxious to have the whole alien thing explained a little more. I'm sure we will probably see that when Evy goes through transition in another book but I didn't quite get the whole alien thing. To me it was like they were humans with super powers. I would have liked to see the differences between the two.
I loved the whole prophecy and the connection with Kai and Kieran but I have to say that the book was a little rushed. I think the author could have expounded and explained more of their connection. It was like Evy sees Kieran and all of a sudden she's kissing him the next day. Plus she didn't meet him till within the last 30 pages of the book. He should have been throughout the book more. Just saying.
I loved her relationship with Liam. I think the author did such a great job of making her characters individuals and making them pop.
I guess I just wanna know more about all of this, which means that the author did her job. If I wanna read more, then she keep me entertained. So good job Heather!! I can't wait to see more into the world you created.
I LOVED this book. After reading the blurb I didn't think I would. The idea of a girl who is predestined to be the saviour of the world she lives in, as well as the world her 'people' come from and who must fulfill a prophesy in order to do this, did not grab my attention. It's not the kind of paranormal book I would usually read (I generally prefer my PNR to have plenty of shifters and alpha-males), but this was fantastic! Don't just take my word for it, read the other reviews!
The characters in this book are wonderful. The heroine is tough, but still sensitive and lovable. Kai and Jenna are sassy and so much fun, while the guys are hot, multilingual, tough and SO hot (did I already mention that they are HOT??)!
There are a few minor typos, but not enough to annoy me too much and certainly not enough to make me rate the book lower than 5 stars! I can't wait to read the next book in this series. If you are looking for something original, that you can get your teeth stuck into and really enjoy, then give this book a go. I dare say you won't be disappointed!
I debated on giving this book a 3 or 4 star review. I very much enjoyed the story-line and concept in this book but found the characters a bit one-dimensional and the story felt very rushed in sections.
Eve seems to be able to adapt so well in the story to certain radical situations she finds herself in, simply throwing a small fit and then excepts them almost immediately, while in things involving her love life she struggles understanding and acceptance to basic things severely. If she's one to struggle with more typical things in life then the bizarre and interesting things that develop around her should cause more of a concern or, at the very least, more thought and fuss.
While it was overall hard to embrace and care for the characters I was intrigued to see where the overall plot was going. I'll definitely be reading the second book when it comes out in the hopes that since we now know and understand the points of characters in the book and general story arc we'll get to delve into it all on a deeper level.
FTC: This book was given to me for review purposes
If you love Dragons and Elementals you will love this book. This is a story about an alien race called Kin. On earth they are dragons in human like appearence that gain elemental powers when they transition or mature. Most importantly it's about Eveline, a Kin who will soon be going through her transition and is believed to be The One Kin who can fufill an ancient prophecy and save the Kin race and their world.
Now if you love guys with accents then you are really in luck. Evy is surrounded by three hotties with accents. One is her brother and two are after her heart. I love the tension between the guys. Her sassy friends Jenna and Kai add great humor/tude to the story. The enemy known as Nerada are a hybrid mix of human and Kin. And just as Evy is getting settled in school, making friends, and having her first kiss the enemy show up. And then guess what?.... the book ends. I was like wahhhhh! I just hope the next book is due out soon. The juicy bits were just getting started.
I really liked this book alot. I did some minor eye rolling but for the most part the protagonist, Evy, was not some weak, annoying girl. She knew her destiny and freaking embraced it and that is what I'm thankful for!
So thank you Ms. Self for writing someone I can be happy reading about. And that cliffhanger...when's the next book release date? Don't leave me hanging.
Evy had the luck of all the hot guys (complete with gorgeous Australian and Irish accents I might add) after her and she got the hot and bothered from them quite a bit (hence the eye rolls) but I also had to take in the rest of her story. She moved around so much she didn't get to have the male attention that most girls got by her age so I understand her reactions.
The mens were hot. No more needs to be said. read the book. :D
All in all: Loved it. I will be awaiting the next installment with bated breath!
I picked this book up at the Decatur Book Festival last year. I really loved the cover but for some reason, I totally missed what this book was about. I though it was going to be a dystopia novel. Not in the least. BUT I absolutely loved it. It is a terrific fantasy novel. I loved the characters, the myth and lore, the mysteriousness about just who Evy is. Oh and let's not forget about all the totally hot guys. I think I know which guy I want Evy to end up with but I could probably be persuaded. For once I really didn't mind the triangle. The characters and the story are just so well written and well done that the triangle works.
On another note, this was just about the best edited book I've ever seen from a self-published author. The cover's beautiful. The author has done a wonderful job with this book all the way around and I can't wait to read the next book in the series.
A unique storyline with a sort of alien race from a dragon shifter realm. I definitely kept flipping pages desperate to find out who was who and what was going on just like the main heroine. I loved the introduction and development of Eveline. I also love that the prophecy about her doesn't seem to be a predestined one, more like one that could happen or could not given the circumstances and free will (option of choice). I can't wait to see what role each of her love interests will play (definitely a heavy love triangle there). I already know I'm rooting for Kieran. I wasn't a huge fan of the big reveal with no wrap up at the end, left me hanging like the end of a chapter, not a book. Even with that, I still loved it and will definitely be picking up the rest of this series (as they come out)!
Wow! This was so cool! I just loved Evy from the very beginning! Her unique appearance and her caring personality make her so easy to like. She doesn’t really believe she is “The One”, like her parents do, but she has put with the constant moving and protection anyway. Although staying in one place and having a normal life is what she really wants. Leadville, CO may seem like the perfect place to start that life, but little does she know things are about to get crazier than ever! This book is full of those “OMG –No Way!!” moments and caught me by surprise many times. And there is no shortage of swoon-worthy boys to fall for either, in fact I’m still not sure who my favorite hottie is! I know one thing for sure; I am dying to find out what happens next!
