Cain Waite watched the girl beneath his lashes. She was skinny he thought but very pretty. He wondered at the conversation she and the nurse was having enough that when the nurse left he followed. He wanted to help the girl and asked for permission to do so.
“Damon Grant knows me. He can vouch for me as a doctor. I just want to see if I can help.” It didn’t matter really once he got back to the girl as she was lying in a pool of her own blood and unconscious.
The girl went by many names. Julie was the one the nurse called her, Shade and also Miss Rocky was just a few more. But it was her real name that she held to her. No one must know who she was or they’d try and kill her. And the good doctor was someone she decided that she didn’t want to see get hurt.
Being homeless helped. Her friends around the streets helped her keep her secret but only until Cain stepped in. And no matter how hard she tried to fight him and his five sisters, the arrogant man got under her skin.
But when it was known that she wasn’t homeless at all and in fact a billionaire, the grounds seemed to open with people trying to get to her. She would only escape one disaster only to be thrown into another. Until Quinn got hurt.
Roscoe wanted the girl’s money and he was willing and quite capable of killing his own daughter to do so. Could she help save the girl and win the man? Did Cain stand a chance against all her money and his family?

When Cain Waite meets the homeless girl who has a knife wound, he feels something more then Doctor/client. The mysterious woman is street savvy but there is a hint of something else too.
Julie "Alyssa" has been on the run since her mother planned something so heinous, she knew she was safer living on the streets than out in the open. Alyssa is a missing heiress and although she finds herself under the watchful care of Cain, she has her own agenda and his mixed signals are a disruption to what she finds most important.
I was mixed on this one, it was a little too quick with the sleeping with department and she was injured so I found it hard to grasp onto. I would retry this one I think again, it could be I was wiped out since I had read like 8 of the authors books in a row.
2.5 stars I don't know what to think of this book. On the one hand I enjoyed reading it; it was a good way to pass time. On the other; I think I enjoyed dissing the book more than anything. It was just so... unrealistic! First, the dude falls for her in like... two days, in which all they've done is fighting and there seemed to be no connection. Then one moment she's leaving, the next they're having sex. Then, all the things with their parents - I could understand one royally screwed up parent with no heart or functioning brain, but three? That was a bit excessive. Then he was talking marriage after a week of knowing her, and everyone could see he was in love with her. Then he was mad at her, Then he was in love with her again. Then he decided he's going to buy her a ring and propose, But a page later he is talking with a patient about how he isn't sure where their relationship is going as she's a rich girl (who have been living ON THE STREETS for ten years! Dude! Are you an idiot?), and that he planned on leaving when the relationship reached it's inevitable ending. WTF? And all the scheming, was a bit... too much. Then there was the way they talked while having sex. Like, do people REALLY talk like that?
Then there were some technical issues, such as a few grammatical mistakes and times when the others seemed to have said the wrong sister's name.
Anyhow, it was fun to read. But mostly so I could laugh at how utterly unrealistic I found this book to be :P
Great Series with Over the Top Soap Opera Drama CAIN Dr Cain Waite is the oldest of the 6 Waite siblings, the only boy and a twin. Fiercely protective of his younger sisters. He is just back in the town he grew up in to work with his friend and Mentor, Dr Damon Grant (Grant Brother's Series). When things got rough in his family the young Waite children lived with the Grant's and saw what family should look like. Cains first day he meets a special patient of Damon's a young homeless women, Julie. Julie is no pushover and has big secrets. For some reason, Cain just can't get her off his mind. Julie, aka Alyssa Howard is an heiress, hiding in plain site for the last decade. At 17, she lost her beloved father, and inherited the entire estate, with small provisions for her mother and two older brothers. Her narcissistic, mother, tried to drug her with plans involving her uncle, a baby and having her declared unfit and seizing control of the Howard moneys. Cain and Alyssa clash, as they fall for each other. Alyssa can no longer hide from her responsibilities. His abusive parents are trying to get back into his life. Alyssa takes back hers, with the help of her fathers former assistant and his grandson. Then Cain's father does the unspeakable and Alyssa steps in to make thing right. Fast pace, steamy. Loved Cain and Alyssa. Great tie to the Grant Brothers Series.
Deciding to start another series from the back catalog of Kathi S. Barton, I've begun with 'Cain', the first book in her "The Waite Family" series. If you have previously read the "The Grant Brothers" series written by Ms. Barton, you may recognize some of the supporting characters that appear in this book. Personally, I was pleasantly surprised to see some familiar faces, especially Cain, who had made a brief appearance or two in the aforementioned series. Dr. Cain Waite has just moved back to Ohio from Maine. Then we have Julie, aka Shade, aka Ms. Rocky … whoever she is that collapses on the floor of the hospital in a pool of blood. When these two meet sparks fly but it's not always from chemistry. Past experience and present circumstances have left our heroine with major trust issues which causes her to have somewhat of a caustic personality at times. With all the mystery and danger coming from both families it was easy to quickly turn pages. I enjoyed this book and look forward to 'Quinn' next.
Cain is a handsome doctor but is also a man franc, forthright , so when he sees Julie , he kisses her and the attraction is strong and he thinks only to take she at own house. Jiulie is a homeless but she hides a secret. Cain and Jiuli both have bad parents that will create many problem . A plot original and rich of action and hot sex a lot. I like this book because is compelling , romantic and dialogues are fun and there isn't subterfuges or misunder to complicate the plot.

### About the Author
I woke up one morning and decided to give play time to the people in my head who were keeping me awake. Little did I know that they would be so relentless and want their time right now! I wrote for the pure joy of it and to entertain my family and friends. But mostly it was to get more than an hour of sleep without a story playing out. Of course, the more I write, the more they want. So…well, as a result of sleepless days (I work through the night as a gun toting grandma – nope not a vigilantly but an armed security guard) I have lots of stories written. Hello! My name is Kathi Barton and I’m an author. I have been married to my very best friend Sonny for at times seems several lifetimes – in a good way, honey. And together we have three wonderful children and then the ones we brought into the world - Paul and Dale Barton, Jason and Wendy Barton and Danielle and Ben Conklin. They have given us seven of the greatest treasures on Earth. They don’t live at home seven days a week! No, seriously, seven grandchildren – Gavin, Spring, Ben, Trinity, Sarah, Kelly and Kian.
Every second one of Barton's books has me wanting to never read another book by her again. And then the next one is fine. I think I know the problem, she's trying to publish too many books too often so one book is fully formed and then the next is bad.
This had some early problems for me, most especially Alyssa/Julie remembering a kiss between her and Cain that didn't happen.
Alyssa was seventeen when her father died and she inherited everything from him. Her mother, uncle and two older brothers were cut off almost completely and her mother and uncle hatched a plan to help him fill the conditions imposed for his share, marriage to a good woman and having child. Alyssa's mother drugged her so that her uncle could make use of the fact she was "breedable".
Not to take anything from that horrendous prospect but surely marriage to your niece/uncle is illegal, and so after Alyssa turned 21 she could have come out of hiding?
Also Alyssa was very aggressive for almost no reason towards Cain, unless she was proving how independent she supposedly was. Injured with a cut that needs eleven stitches is not the time to be pushing a kind doctor away. At one point she is found in "a pool of her own blood" and her response upon waking is to try and leave the doctor giving her medical care? I'm sorry but that's a TSTL move right there.
But once Alyssa/Julie gets over herself a little (and heals without being injured again) we see a little of Cain and her together and the next books in the series get set up.
Finally, this series shares characters with the Grant Brothers series but time has been skipped nearly twenty years as all of the Grant brothers' children have left or are about to leave home. Which annoyed be because I want to know ahead of time when books skip time like this, however I haven't judged the book on this.
I give this two stars, because the editing is vastly improved and the story makes more sense than the last, however I know that this author can do better and has before so I am very disappointed.
Why did I even bother with this book? I got it for free from Amazon some time ago and I thought the cover was cool. Talk about judging a book by its cover. For more than half of this story, I was yawning and trying to stay awake because nothing really kept me awake. I mean, believe it or not, I actually wanted to study for the Physics test I had the next day (I think it's never happened before...).
The book started kind of okay, but it only got worse from there on. I felt like everything was rushed and there were too many things that made me want to yell at somebody because it was just bad. Like I felt that Cain's insecurity after he found out who she really was, was kind of (*cough* a lot) forced just so they'd just have more problems. And Julie's/Alyssa's stubbornness was a bit too much for me, even though I usually enjoy strong heroines (she really didn't know when to stop). Oh, I mentioned that the story was rushed, right? Because there was another half of me that felt that it just dragged and dragged (or maybe it was just because I wanted it to end so badly).
Maybe it could have been a good story (I did think the blurb sounded good enough), but it was not carried out well enough.
True, there were some funny lines I even bothered to show my classmate/good friend and the sex was hot. Those are really the only good things I can think of and that's a shame because I was hoping for a lot more.
Should you read this? Do you wish to die a slow and painful death? Okay, I'm kidding. A little. This book did have its strengths (witty dialogue), but it didn't balance out everything I disliked. I wouldn't bother reading it.
I thought this was a storyline that was built on a unique concept. The fact that Julie / Alyssa the main character hid on the streets right in front of the noses of the people who wanted to control her was inspired. I have been finding that Ms. Barton has been incorporating some interesting moral elements in her storylines and this one was no exception. Homeless are overlooked, treated badly and often treated as throwaways. One should be careful of how others are treated as you never know when one of those unwanted people might own your building. Cain is a different type of character, he loves his sisters but looked at Alyssa like she was doing something wrong by living the way she did. He did however treat her homeless friends with more respect then I thought he would raising my opinion of him highly. I like how the author intertwines some of her series. This one overlaps the Grants and I had fun reading about how they had evolved as characters. This story lays the foundation for the ones to come so there is a lot going on and it jumps from place to place. There are a lot of different sub characters introduced and many players involved in the plot. I liked the storyline , characters and loved the drama ( you will not believe the parents of these characters, unbelievable)finding myself smiling at some of the interactions. I was left with some questions that I know will increase as the series continues, however I look forward to figuring them out as I continue with the next book. I was given an ARC for an honest review
A romance that will appeal to those who love a bit of erotic/explicit literature. I loved the plot line, the riches to rags to riches line was entertaining and gripping. The characters were well developed and the protagonists had good reason to feel threatened, intimidated and sense evil from those that oppose them. I found it interesting that both the male and female protagonists had a parent who did everything for self gain. The world building was also very nicely done. Life on the streets were nicely described and I loved the fact that the people on the streets had nicely fluffed out back stories that is easily understood and with which one and all can sympathize and empathize. The sex, erotic or explicit as it was, and I must say in context it was more explicit than erotic made sense within the story line but I once again realized that it is not my favorite thing in the world to read. My lack of appreciation is however the one thing that will make this series a hit and well loved by many of my friends who feels cheated if a book does not contain this element. A 4 * read and well worth it. WaAr
I was honestly a little disappointed in this book and can really say this an example of "you shouldn't judge a book by it's cover." I picked this up free from Amazon and am glad that I didn't pay for it. Most books I fly through and have trouble putting down. This one, I had trouble making myself finish.
It wasn't that the story was bad, but it was just not at all believable. I know, I know...how many books are realistic? I just had a hard time with it. Cain (a doctor) meets Julie (homeless from the streets) and falls in love at first sight with her. Everyone else looks at her and sees a dirty, messed up person living in a box but not him? It wasn't just the "hard to believe" part of the book, but also the fact that the writing was almost formal at times. That may sound silly, but it made the story difficult to follow at times because it wasn't as if they were just talking to each other as many books do.
Bottom line, I didn't hate this book, but I sure didn't love it either. Not sure that I will give another try to a Kathi Barton book if this is her normal writing style either.
I liked the storyline and how the conflicts among both characters were stretched out. I especially liked that both hero and heroine were strong characters. Cain, older brother, and basically protector of his five sisters was attracted to Alyssa who needed that type of protection herself. Now, this is what I loved about Alyssa, she needed protection, but she did a good job defending herself when necessary. I liked that she wasn't some helpless damsel.
The only thing I had issues with, the reason I didn't give this book a five star review, the dialogue. It was done in a conversation format, and although you felt the characters feelings, it made it difficult to know who was talking at times. I found myself re-reading some sentence two or three times because it was confusing as to who was talking to who.
This was a good read, and I will without a doubt read the other installments in this series.
Quite frankly, it still has its Kathi Barton signature all over it, same thing we saw with the Grant Brothers series - sexy and strong characters, explosive high drama contexts and backdrops... However, the flow of the narrative became an issue for me and the development of the love story seems a bit hurried, or it seemed as if some very important scenes were skipped out and we got a concise version of the love story development. It felt like one moment they just met and were attracted to each other then suddenly they jumped to point B where they were already in-love/lust irrevocably. I do understand that some stories fall under the love-at-first-sight or the hyperspeed love story category, but this one felt incomplete somehow in development.
Still an interesting read, specially if you're looking for glimpses of the Grant family you've missed.
I have read this book before but it was way before I knew about actually giving/writing reviews.
This book is very good in the good vs bad plot on both Cain’s side of the family & Alyssa’s side of the family.
Cain has looked after his 5 sisters ever since their parents were deemed unfit parents & they still are unfit that is. Cain while beginning a new career in Ohio meets his future in the form of a homeless woman with many names (as the other homeless people call her different names).
Alyssa aka the homeless woman had been on the run since she was 17 & her mother tried to drug her for her uncle. But, that’s all about to change for her once she meets Cain.
But, you’ll have to read the book to find out what happens next in their story. This book contains lots of descriptive sex scenes, characters from a previous book series & a hot Doc.
Kathi Barton has done it again and sucked me right into her world. The trials and tribulations her characters go through just to find love makes her stories all the more real. I just wish my story would end the way hers does.
Cain introduces us to the Waite family and from there we meet some wonderful characters and then a few not so wonderful. This story had me in tears a few times, but the ending OMG the ending ....AMAZING! Another great thing is we get to see what has been happening to another family of Barton's we have come to love...the Grant's make an appearance. I recommend this to anyone who needs a little romance but enjoys a little action. You will not be disappointed.
I can't wait for more books from this phenomenal author. Thank you so much Mrs. Barton :)
Cain Waite is a new doctor trying to get his start up in a new hospital. He has crappy parents who only care about themselves and getting their next buck rather than caring for their 6 kids. But caring for one homeless patient will change Cain in ways he couldn't even imagine!
Julie/Alyssa has been living on the streets for the last 10 years. After her father died her mother tried to marry her off to her uncle so they would be set and get the money Alyssa's father left to her. When she's been stabbed and has to be treated, she's left in the care of the handsome doctor.
When these two come together it's explosive! The drama the two families cause it just funny in a way, but heartbreaking at the same time.
**I voluntarily reviewed an Advance Reader Copy of this book**
I loved this story of how Cain and 'Julie'(Shade/ Miss Rockyand many more that she is know as) started. The story was a fast read and had me hooked form that starts.
I loved how Kathi brought in a few old characters from the Grant series.
Cain is a doctor that has move back into Ohio area and seeing an old when when he comes across Julie how is hurt and is in need of attention. Julie is not used to being around crowds as being homeless for the last 10 yrs or so has made he this way. From leading a life or her choosing Julie's world gets flipped back to poor to being homeless after meeting Cain and his 5 sisters but it's Cain world that will be flipped upside down more after finding out Julie's secret.
Cain introduces us to the Waite family. You will meet some wonderful characters and then some you will automatically hate. This story had me in tears a few times and laughing and the chemistry between Cain and Julie is awesome and the ending is wonderful! Another great thing is we get to see what has been happening to another family of Kathi Barton's - a few of the Grant's make an appearance. I recommend this to anyone who needs a little romance but enjoys a little action. You will not be disappointed.
Usually I have a hard time putting a book down, but with this one, I had trouble picking it up. I figured after reading The Grant Brothers series, and one of The Hunter series that this one would be good. Boy was I wrong! I know it's fiction, but come one! The way he talks at times, and falls for her within a couple days, and asks her to marry him after what seems like a week?! Not sure if I want to finish this series now or not.

The story line was very interesting and I loved how the author complicated the story. However, some parts, especially the dialog parts, were a bit confusing. Sometimes I didn't know who was speaking. And I understand that the author was trying to make the dialog more conversation-like, but it was a bit annoying (at least to me) when it appeared to many time to count.
"Cain" was an interesting book but for me it seemed the attraction happened to quickly, and the story seemed rushed, there was alot happening in the story. I will likely read the other books in the series to see what happens with all of the Waite Family, and maybe they will go alittle deeper into the relationship with Cain and Alyssa.
This man is beautiful on the inside and out... When he sees Julie he had an instant draw to her. She is a mouthy no nonsense woman who won't be told what to do by anyone. When she disappears and Cain finds her he realizes that there is more to both their families than they could ever imagine. Will they be able to fight their way through it and become a couple?
As was the theme in the series this one spins off from, the speed at which the romance escalates is far fetched, to say the least! However, I quite liked the idea that a billionaire lived covertly on the streets for ten years. And once off the streets, made sure to make great strides in seeing that those still on the streets either found a way off, or were provided with extra support!

This story made tears come to my eyes so many times but none so sweet as the ending, dang that was wonderful that Alyssa got to include her dad at her wedding. Looking forward to reading about all of the Waite girls and keeping up with Cain and Alyssa.
The whole point of offering free books is to get readers to want to buy other books written by the author. Barton is one of two others that I loved so much that I bought some of her other books. I enjoyed this book immensely and look forward to reading other books in the Waite series.
