Writing from the U.K. in 1968, professor J.P. Nettle concluded that Stalin was "necessary." Enough said?
Actually, it would be unfair to dismiss the author as a mere shill or dupe. He does downplay failures and atrocities, but at lease he doesn't omit or excuse them. In fact, he includes enough statistics to actually refute his own premise of "achievement." I kept waiting to read about various achievements, but aside from the typical socialist claims (canards) of Soviet industrial miracles, there really aren't any notable achievements aside from the Red Army's victory over the National Socialists.
Near the end, he writes of the "obvious permanence" of the Soviet Union. This gave me a good chuckle.
