Ava-Claire Sullivan's first mistake was becoming vampire Peter Mackintire's personal blood bank. Her second mistake was falling in love with him.

Now it's Ava's job to make sure he never loves her in return. A pact Peter made nearly a hundred years ago means loving someone will kill him. If she can figure out how to free him from his promise, it might kill her, make her immortal, or lead to the love she wants so badly.

But if she doesn't, at best, her heart will break…and at worst, Peter will die.

I enjoyed the first book in this series, Nocturnal, but it was lacking something that had me only liking the story. Don't ask me what it is, because I probably can't tell you. However, Nightmare was definitely better than the first book. Although the pace was slow, I loved the story.

In Nocturnal, we learn that the supernatural creatures Ava is exposed to are Noctali. They are angels, vampires, werewolves, every kind of supernatural creature there is. Peter is a Noctalis: a vampire angel. And now that he's Claimed Ava, he can only drink her blood. Let's just say, it's a problem.

Nightmare doesn't focus so much on the supernatural aspects. It focuses on Ava's and Peter's relationship, as well as all of the secondary characters (though I was missing more of Jamie and Tex in this book). We get more backstory on Peter, as well as some heartbreaking moments between Ava and her mother. After deciding to tell her mother about Peter being a Noctalis and about the Claiming, it adds another element now that more people know about the supernatural. Her mother is, by far, one of my favorite characters. She's exactly what I've been missing from other parents in young adult novels. Most of them are always in the background, never focused on, never a part of the story (especially in fantasy, paranormal, and dystopian novels). They are only there to make it known that the characters do have them. But her mother is present for everything in Ava's life. And now that she knows her secret, Ava feels better. Although, she still feels like she's burdening her mother who doesn't need any more pain in her life.
There is such a freedom in unburdening a secret, but it is our fear of what will happen after the secret is out that keeps our lips sealed.
However, she only partially tells her best friends the secrets. Jamie knows about her mother, and Tex knows about Peter. It is in that secrecy where those two characters drop off in this story, leaving much of Ava's interactions with only her mother and Peter. It's awesome character development, but I missed the closeness and tight friendship of Ava, Jamie, and Tex.

I loved that the story focused a lot on Peter's and Ava's relationship. It was a slow development for them, from the cemetery to their tentative friendship. From their need for each other to their desire for companionship. The first book set it up nicely, and this one developed it even further. Ava is strong-willed, impatient, stubborn: she is, essentially, just a teenager whose mother is dying and whose boyfriend drinks her blood and has wings. A lot of how she dealt with both of these burdens made sense, even if I wanted smack her a few times for overreacting. Her love for Peter and her need to feel wanted drives her actions. But she also makes sure to keep a level and clear head when it comes to things she can't control. Especially how Peter will never be able to love her like she needs. And especially how she's now smelling people's blood, and it smells divine. Heavenly. She needs Peter's help, and he's her rock. I love Peter! I love the way he talks (he's old, so it's much more "sophisticated"), and I love the way he takes care of Ava. Although I liked his character development in this, I was so hoping for more background story.

I would have liked more background on the Noctalis and how they came to be. Although, I'll bet the first book already cleared that up. I honestly can't remember much about Nocturnal in the way of its supernatural story-line, so I might just be forgetting all of the important aspects of the Noctali. But I would have liked it if this book had had more development on the supernatural elements. And especially about those promises! They are a Noctalis' only weakness, and it's those promises that give these two lovebirds trouble. Though the supernatural component was really only there for the last few chapters, I thought the ending was rather effective and it has me intrigued for what happens next!

The pace was slow, but I was never bored. There was always something interesting going on, even when the conversations slowed. Chelsea Cameron's books always have a signature feisty and sassy humor, and I love it! The plot mostly consisted of Ava and Peter, Ava and her mother, but there was a little bit more on the supernatural component. These Noctali are certainly intriguing! However, their story is far from over. I can't wait to read Neither!

This story just keep getting better and better as it goes on. I love the relationship between Peter and Ava as they struggle with the Claiming bond. They need to figure out how to break Peter’s promise with Di, who is Peter’s 'mother' in the way that she created him into a Noctalis (what this book calls a vampire). This book features more character point of view swapping than it did in the first of the series. That being said, it’s also easier to tell whose point of view it is. When a chapter starts from the POV of Peter or Ava, mid-way through the chapter it will switch to the opposite's name to continue with their POV. I like this because I like getting both characters POV.

The setting in this book still takes place in Maine, but they do go down to Florida to visit a old friend of Peter’s who might know something about how to break the bind to his maker Di.

The plot in this book again centers this time around both Ava and Peter. They learn that there is more effects of the Claiming then they originally thought. They can’t stay away from each other over long distances or it will cause pain. Ava is also beginning to like the smell of blood from those close to her. You also learn that the person Peter calls an old friend isn’t all that he seems to be.

Telling your mom that your boyfriend is a Noctalis makes your brave. Ava had to tell her mom about Peter because she hated lying to her. I can understand how Ava wanted to tell her friend, but to tell her mom is bold. Naturally, her mother doesn't want the two of them together.

Ava is still strong and wants to protect Peter. She wants to kiss him and hug him and do what she feels in her heart to do because she loves him, but she has to stop herself. If she causes him to fall for her then he will die. She starts to notice things like how she starts to react to human blood. To her it smells good, an effect of the claiming bond that Peter put on her in the first book.

Peter seems to talk more in this book then in the last, which interests me. The connection he has with Ava really has changed him. Though he can’t love her he does adore her and tells her that. I think it’s sweet either way. It’s a different type of love even if it’s not true love. He still keeps Ava in the dark about a few things, which is understandable considering his pas,t but he does tell her few things about his pre-Ava eras.

I found that Tex has become more annoying in this book then in the last. She wants to meet up with Peter’s brother even though Ava keeps telling her “no”. She doesn’t listen and just keeps bugging causing Ava to get more then annoyed with her. Jamie's role in this book has slid back, but he does talk to Ava and listen to her when she finally tells him about her parents. This book also tells you more about Ivan’s past. You also meet Cal, an old friend of Peter’s. I found Cal to be creepy, even though he lives in a house unlike most Noctalis and wears nice clothes.

(Source: I received a digital copy of this book for free on a read-to-review basis as part of the ‘Noctalis’ Blog Tour! Thanks to Supagurl books and Chelsea Cameron.)
This is the second book in the ‘Noctalis’ series, and kicks off 1 week after the end of book 1 – ‘Nocturnal’.
Nightmare opens with Ava telling her Mom exactly what Peter is, which makes her mother tired, which later turns into a fainting spell. Ava is obviously upset as she feels that she has made her mother feel worse.
Things between Ava and Peter are still complicated in this book – Peter has previously made a promise to his maker that impacts on their relationship significantly – That he will never love anyone more than he loves her! This obviously imparts limits on both their physical and emotional relationship.
Thankfully though Peter is there for her when it comes to supporting her through her mother’s illness, which is something that she desperately needs, especially with her problems talking to her friends.

Peter’s brother Ivan is still a major problem in this second book. It is revealed exactly why Ivan is so hell-bent on taking Ava from Peter, and the risk posed to Ava is still very real in this respect.

How can Peter break the bind with his ‘mother’? How will Ava and Peter live with this ‘claiming’? When will Peter’s brother be back to try and kill Ava again? Can Ava convince Peter that he should turn her into a Noctalis?

I enjoyed this book. Just like the first I really didn’t want to put it down at times! Peter and Ava’s relationship moves along a bit in this book, and Peter is a total sweetheart. It’s nice to hear Ava and Peter voice their feeling for one another, even when Peter cannot use the ‘L’ word.

I am extremely worried about the promise Peter made to the woman that made him (His ‘mother’) - that he will never love anyone more than he loves her. I just don’t see how he can keep this promise, and keep himself from falling for Ava. He says he wants to keep her safe, and that he adores her rather than loves her, but it’s obvious that he is falling for her which is extremely dangerous.

Ava is also upset by the urges and images that she keeps getting as a side effect of Peter’s claiming, which wasn’t something that she was expecting.
The ending left us on a bit of a cliffhanger and I can’t wait to find out what happens next!

Overall; a great second instalment, bring on book 3!
7 out of 10.

First Thoughts:
Well after reading the first book in this series I was super excited to read this one! The first one literally had me in tears and I wanted to see if that theme would continue or if we would get to learn more about Peter and the other Noctalis.
The Main Character:
Ava-Claire Sullivan… in this book I kind of had a love/hate thing going… she is still pretty awesome with dealing with everything, and that scene with her and Jamie was super sweet and totally describes what friends are for… but her whole killing mind flashes were uncool and I really want to understand why she keeps having them… and even though I know its because of the claiming, she is super clingy which is something else I don’t like at least towards the end she tries to be stronger and deal with everything on her own as much as she can.
Love is in the Air:
Peter… ok he is definitely turning into a favorite character of mine. He is slowly becoming more human and less weird… he also talks so much in this book which was also pretty cool because I really want to learn more about him. I also loves how even though he cant love Ava without turning into a pile of ash… he has found a way around that because he obviously loves her or he woldnt care if she died!
Ending:
*sigh* cliffhanger! Of course! I really should stop expecting books to not have a cliffhanger!
This one was so sad though! Even though I have never been an Ivan fan what he did for Ava and Peter was so amazing and sweet and it was basically like a forgiveness type thing as well for Peter (in my opinion anyways) so overall it was a very good ending and totally left me wanting to find out what happens even if I have plenty of ideas about the outcome Peters actions.
Final Thoughts:
Although this book didn’t tug at my heartstrings and have me crying (ok maybe I wanted to cry over the whole Ivan thing) this book was fantastic. It focused a lot more on Peter this time, so although yes I feel bad for Ava because her mother is dying… we got to see Peters take on a lot of other different issues that I feel was just glossed over in the first book. With the way this book ended I will be waiting impatenitly for the next book (as I always wait for the next book in a great series) I also hope that in the next book we get to see and learn a bit more about Viktor, he is so seldom in the story so far but everytime he is mentioned I always want to learn just a little bit more!

My review: I couldn’t wait to start this book right after finishing Nocturnal. I’m addicted to this series about Ava, the human, and Peter, the Noctalis, and their tie to each other. However, their relationship goes beyond just the human falling in love with the angel-vampire. I’m not going to spoil, but just believe me that there’s more to it than them getting googly eyes at each other. It is definitely physical, something they learned when Peter had to leave for a short while.

In the first novel, one of the mysteries of the Noctali is that we don’t know their weakness. In this story we know what the weakness is, and the focus of this book is to find a loophole so that no one ends up dying. Because in the world of Noctali, promises are binding so words and actions must be chosen carefully.

This installment overall was a little slower but still so very good. Ava continues to watch her mother steadily decline as the cancer takes over. Once again I found myself tearing up so many times. But it’s not all sad; Ava is able to talk to Peter about things she can’t talk to anyone else about. While she opens her heart to him, she falls even more in love. I loved watching their relationship bloom; they start with a sweet and young romance, but by the end they are both on the brink of some serious desire. Not going to lie here, I’m ready for some lustiness. :)

Ava also interacts with more of Peter’s family and friends in this 2nd book: Ivan, Vicktor, and Cal. These creatures are far more dangerous than we can probably imagine. We learn way more about them by the end, and I personally have flip-flopped my opinion of some of them. I love when an author catches me off guard!

I read the book in essentially one sitting. While there were quite a few typos and errors, it was not anything glaring, but a good editor would catch all this. That is easy to ignore when the story behind it all is so good.

Now for the ending of the book. It finished with me saying, “HOLY CRAP!” and then I read further down the page and said, “HOLY CRAP!” again. And then I turned the page. What? It’s over?!? I can’t wait for the next one which comes out soon. Please hurry, Ms. Cameron!

As if things aren't complicated enough she can't let Peter fall in love with her. I felt so bad for Ava and all that she was dealing with. She was still coping with her mom being sick and now having to figure out how to help Peter.

Ava forces Peter to try to figure out a way for him to break his promise so he can be free to love and be with her withouht fear of dying. I have to say this is when I really started to love Ava because she wasnt going down without a fight. She was willing to do anything to help her and Peter stay together. I loved that her mom accepted Peter and was ok with her being with him. I'm suprised it didn't freak her out more. Peter just became even more endearing when he was always so nice to Ava's mom.

I like that Ava had Tex to lean on in the mist of all the craziness she had going on. I felt so bad for what Jaime was going through though and was upset that nobody was trying to stop it. I hated that he was dealing with so much but was relevied when he finally opened up to his friends. I also loved that Peter was ok with Ava having friends and wasn't trying to alenaite her from them. He wasn't possessive at all and was ok with her having a life outside of him. It was refreshing because a lot of the teen books they guys are really possessive.

Overall the action was ramped up a notch in this book and I loved it more than the first one. This one had way more romance between Peter and Ava and it was so sweet. It was great seeing their relationship build and how much Peter really cared for her. Cameron did a great job with her vivid descriptions and amazing writing skills. It made me not want to put the book down and I can't wait for the next book to come out. I highly recommend this book and you will be in for such a treat.

I think the ending of book 1 was pretty sweet. Book 2 starts out a week later. I think the plot was pretty consistent. There is no doubt that Ava has fallen in love with Peter, but even though they steal kisses here and there, they cannot fully be in a romantic relationship because of the promise that Peter made to his 'Mother' Di. If he breaks that promise, well something bad happens, as you know from Book 1, but you get a deeper understanding in Nightmare. Ever since Peter and Ava did that Claim, she has been feeling very weird, getting some sort of sense that in ways freaks her out, but what can that mean and why is she having bad dreams? Ava is also dealing with the failing health of her Mother, as read from Nocturnal; we know that she is facing terminal cancer, and still there are heart warming and sensitive scenes, and some light scares.

With the business with Peter, Ava wants to find some way so that he can somehow break that unfair promise to Di, so he can really be free from her, and can hopefully say and feel the love he...might have for Ava? To get that freedom, it is a tough journey, but will Peter and Ava make it through? Well, you just have to read this one and find all the answers, and I think the story was pretty good! The characters were again well developed; the writing was again just wonderful! I do love how Ava's best friends, Jamie and Tex are also woven in this story; they are so needed! I enjoyed learning more about Peter's past and some of the backstory that includes his other 'Brothers'. I have to admit, at the end, I was not ready for the story to end like it did; there is a little or some might say huge cliffhanger but all I can say is that I'm ready for the next Book in this Chronicles, as I feel there's more good writing, good story, to come!

GAH!!! There are so many things I absolutely LOVE about this series, and then there are these stupid things that annoy me to no end....it's not fair. I feel whiny.

OK, so lots of good stuff in here. Still LOVING the way Peter is written and everything from his perspective...he never fails to pleasantly surprise me. I think Ava got a bit more annoying in this book. Her Mom is still +1 AWESOME though. I don't get Tex. I just don't. I'm still waiting for something more redeemable for her.

I STILL get all these parts where either I'm crazy, or perhaps the book was edited and certain parts taken out without fixing referencing parts. Like Jamie. Did he meet Peter before that track meet? Cause I don't remember that and all of a sudden he's like "nice to see you again". Uh what??? Seriously, there were a few instances in the book like this where it feels like something was missing. And for some reason it really annoys me.

I find the pacing to be a bit weird with the climax and all that...I wouldn't say the books have cliffhangers, but it's like the whole series is one big book that just got divided up into several smaller books, b/c they really end abruptly (even though my kindle tells me the end is coming). Ivan surprised me. I hope we learn more about that. Viktor is surprising me, and I'm enjoying that.

So I know that seems like an awful lot of negative review for a 4 star, but I'm the kind of reader who liberally stars her books, so this was explaining why it wasn't one of the best I guess. Peter alone could generate a million stars.....*sigh* Such a bizarre and yet endearing hero.

The original review can be found at Deb's Crazy Obsession.

I loved the first book in this series (review here). It had a slower pace than I’d normally appreciate but it introduced so many new things that a higher pace wasn’t necessary. This book on the other hand. It feels like there is nothing happening. They have a whole lot of troubles coming their way and it builds and it builds and then it hit the high point. We get half way through that only high point before we’re left with a cliffhanger for the next book. I’d have liked more and especially bigger hiccups along the way and with that I could probably have lived with that major cliffhanger. As it is, not so much.

I like Peter’s development as a character. He started out as a complete mystery and slowly but surely he’s unraveled and while I loved Ava in Nocturnal because of her stupid fearlessness she falls a bit flat in Nightmare. She’s constantly worrying, though it’s a warranted worry, she does nothing but and it get’s a bit tiring to be honest. Where Ava is a bit too timid, Texas is all over the place instead. She’s a little too exaggerated and she get’s on my nerves with her need-to-know-everything personality and when presses issues and question a good friend shouldn’t be.

The book is a bit wishy-washy and unmemorable but it is a adequate book. Cameron’s writing is exceptional and the minor bumps along the road is intriguing enough to have you keep reading. I’ll definitely be reading the next book, Neither, and find out how that cliffhanger ends!

Nightmare begins with Ava's wanting to share her secret about Peter with her mom,Claire. Her mom takes the unbelievable bravely and eventually supports her daughter's relationship for Peter for what it is. I'm sure she would much have preferred that Ava date nice live boys, but what's done is done as far as the claiming and what it entails, so.....Ava also tries to make it right with Jamie Barton, her sports and detention pal. She shares that her mom is near death and she supports his issues concerning his sister's pregnancy. Ava and Peter are growing closer together and feeling a strong bond since the claiming. They can not be apart from each other for long periods of time. Tex is still pestering Ava for a date with Viktor, Peter's brother. This almost drives a wedge between the two girls. And poor Peter, trying to find a way out for Ava and himself is betrayed by a close friend. Again the characters are so strong in this story that you lose yourself in the story. The climax of the book comes when our Ava-Claire and Peter tangle once again with Di, Peter's Noctalis mother.

I just about can't wait til the third book, Numb comes out in August and the last book, Neverend, comes out this winter! Inquiring minds want to know what's next for young heroes and their family and friends! And what will happen with Di? I can tell you what I'd like to have happen to her!

I don't know about most Chelsea, but most sequels are hard to write. It is hard to live up to the expectations after such a great novel is written like Nocturnal was.

I however found Chelsea Cameron to make an even better sequel than her initial book, Nocturnal. Nightmare was a thrilling read and I thought it was made of pure awesomeness!

Nightmare focused less on her mom having cancer, which I found to be a relief. I love how interesting the relationships become in this book. Texas and Victor finally get to meet. Tex is through the moon over it.

Peter and Ava also tell Ava's mom the truth about everything. I enjoyed the dynamic between the three characters after that. They made Ava's mom happy by not keeping the truth a secret.

I absolutely loved, loved, loved the relationship between Peter and Ava. They become so attached and you can feel her love for him. Their interactions in this book were endearing and sweet.

Most of the action happens in the last portion of the book and boy did it deliver. I am still awestruck by the cliffhanger Chelsea left us with. Needless to say, I will be one of the first in line to download the final book in the trilogy, Numb (Noctalis Chronicles Book #3) when it comes out in the fall. I give this book five glittery stars!!!

Was mir gefallen hat:

Full Review at: What's Beyond Forks?

Nightmare, the second book in the Noctalis Chronicles by Chelsea M. Cameron, picks up where Nocturnal left off. This sequel did not disappoint, and I liked it just as much as the first book. The main characters have changed through out these two books. I'm not just talking about their relationship, which intensifies by the minute. Peter, for example is funny and cute as he is learning to act human. He's had me from the beginning with his "blinks". The other characters become more involved through this book, and I'm still not sure I would have told Tex the big secret, but she's entertaining. There's a character in particular who really shocks me, but I'm not telling you why. You'll have to read that for yourself. The ending was abrupt and left me kicking and screaming for more. Literally. I'll be keeping my eyes peeled for Numb, the third and final book in the Noctalis Chronicles, due out September 31, 2012.

I think that Nightmare is even better than book one, Nocturnal. I felt like we really got to dive into the meat of the story, and I loved that we got to know the characters better.

Peter and Ava get so much closer in Nightmare. It is crazy how close they get. But it never felt rushed or exaggerated. I really enjoyed watching their progression. And if you remember, in my review of book one I stated that I wanted to get to know Peter more, and find out more about his past. Well in Nightmare, you get to do just that! Peter slowly starts to share bits of himself with Ava.

Another interesting concept here was the "claiming" of Ava. I really liked how the whole thing was described as Ava and Peter were experiencing it. It was well done.

The Noctalis Chronicles are turning out to be such a great treat! I am really getting attached to Peter and Ava and I can't wait to see what is going to happen with them. I was surprised by a certain evil brother more than once. If you are looking for a new vampire series, I think The Noctalis Chronicles would be a great choice.

First off I’d like to say that the ending of this book killed me.. That was just cruel, I flipped through the rest of the pages looking for more soo not fair talk about a cliffhanger..

Things are getting complicated for Ava her mother is getting sicker she fell in love with an Immortal vampire who cannot love her back and is his own personal blood bank. What else could go wrong oh yeah Di is coming for them sooner or later? Ava makes Peter promise to find a way to break his promise to Di so he can be free to love and be with her.

I love that we get to see more to Tex one of Ava’s best friends but I wish we would see more of Jamie too. I love the fact that Ava will not go down without a fight (you go girl) she will do whatever it takes to help Peter.

I can’t wait to read book 3 the ending to this killed me I need to know what happens next in their story.

I was lucky enough to be able to read this book and the first in the series back to back. After the ending in Nocturnal, I don't think I could have waited for Nightmare to come out. The author is most definitely the "Cliffhanger Queen" during this series! Book 1 had me chomping at the bit waiting for the few hours until I could read Book 2 and now it has me waiting for Book 3! There is so much action in this series that I can hardly contain my excitement as I'm writing this. I'm so in love with this series that I'm finding it really hard not to give spoilers for this review! So I guess all I will say is that if you don't even attempt to pick up Nocturnal, you are just downright crazy! You won't be able to resist Nightmare...trust me on this one ;)

Ok where to start??

I think ava's mum Clare is funny, and I'm starting to dread when the time comes and she dies :'(

Peter and ava's relationship is starting to get interesting specially with the binding.. I'd have hoped for more intimate scenes but the book works great so far.. it does seem they take 1 step forward and 2 steps back bless them...

Viktor has piped up my curiosity specially towards the end. .. and Ivan now he I don't get .. I know he has his own motives of revenge but I do actually believe he has a heart deep down.. and at the end I wasn't sure I wanted to kiss him or slap him .. I hope that's not the last we see of him!!

so now I've just purchased book 3 and can't wait to find out more specially from how it ended in this book :-)

OMG did that just end like that? This book is moving the series along quite nicely. The bond between Peter and Ava is becoming more intense and secrets are revealed. I love her aunt who's obsessed with medieval torture devices, don't get on her bad side. I also like that we get to hear more of Peter's back story. I foresee a relationship between Tex and Victor. Fantastic.

Awesome read! Is there another one?! Ava and Peter are awesome characters and their greatest challenge is something they don't want to fight...being Claimed. Love the development of this story! Can't wait to read more!

WOW el final fue espectacular en serio cada vez que leo un libro de esta saga me voy enamorando más de los personajes y como van evolucionando especialmente de Ava y Peter. Me muero por el desenlace de la historia

Good book, but i found myself skimming a lot of pages. The story line was great but i just don't enjoy reading a TON of useless pages that seem to be page fillers. Other than that i liked it.
