Derrick Beatty has come home to Arizona to solve the mystery of his father’s disappearance. But he never would have returned to his Private Investigator job if he had known that Reggie Mandel, his former partner, was still at the Banister agency. Though Derrick had always adored Reggie, it seemed she could never return his love—especially when she accepted another man’s engagement ring. As buried secrets begin to surface, the reluctant partners soon discover there is more to the Samuel Beatty case, and to Derrick’s hot-tempered brother Corbin, than meets the eye. Much like their search for clues in an abandoned gold mine, Derrick and Reggie fumble through unspoken darkness as they each attempt to uncover the other’s true feelings. Brimming with surprises and interwoven with modern forensic science, Lack of Evidence unites two stubbornly independent crime trackers on a quest for truth—a search that also guides them to forgiveness and, perhaps, even love.
"When Derrick leaves Hawaii to return to his job as a private investigator in his home town, his first order of business is to look into his father's mysterious disappearance years before. With the aid of his former partner, Reggie, he finds that there is more to bee found-- in the case and his relationship with Reggie-- than first seen. Someone has something to cover up-- could it be that Derrick's brother has something to hide? This is a good book, a gripping read, though I was there was a bit more conflict in the Derrick/Reggie relationship." (My review from 11/17/2004.)
I love Reggie's wit and spunk!! And, it's funny that everyone else knows her's and Derrick's love interest seeing as how both broke off their engagements to other people. The comments about them getting married are hilarious. Bringing the two back together as partners works out pretty well. They immediately tackle the unsolved case of Derrick's missing father. Solving the case makes up the story, and bringing back the prodigal son is a bonus.
This was a good light read and a nice happy ending after reading the Series of Unfortunate Events books. It is about a personal investigator who is reopening his missing fathers's case. It was fun to guess at what was going to happen
This mystery was wonderfully clean and enjoyable to read. The plot unfolds predictably, but the book continued to pique my interest. The LDS romance aspects were humorous and cute.
