Hiro Mashima (Jap: 真島ヒロ) is a Japanese manga artist.
He gained success with his first serial Rave, published in Kodansha's Weekly Shōnen Magazine from 1999 to 2005. His best-selling work, Fairy Tail, published in the same magazine from 2006 to 2017, became one of the best-selling manga series with over 72 million copies in print. Mashima began the currently ongoing Edens Zero in 2018.
Fairy Tail won the Kodansha Manga Award for shōnen manga in 2009, and Mashima was given the Harvey Awards International Spotlight award in 2017 and the Fauve Special Award at the 2018 Angoulême International Comics Festival.
I think I actually like this story line done in the manga more than in the anime. You get to start learning a bit more about where Erza came from before joining Fairy Tail!
...did you know one of the characters in this series can take a bullet in the head and *survive*? (spoiler: it's Natsu) I didn't, but Hiro Mashima's writing is as random as ever, so I'm not surprised.
Volume 10 begins with the regular crowd going on a short vacation and having fun at the seaside - until they get interrupted by Erza's tragic past. In short, a bunch of weird, quirky characters who talk funny show up, Erza gets captured and kidnapped, Natsu gets a gun fired in his mouth, and some people get trapped in playing cards.
I wonder if the people trapped in cards were meant to be a plot point, but Hiro Mashima forgot about them; I wonder if there are any minor characters in this series who aren't impossibly quirky; I wonder if there's anything that can actually hurt Natsu in any way.
For example, this guy is a "square" obsessed with being a dandy:
There's also a woman obsessed with cats. And Juvia the quirky water mage is still obsessing over Gray.
So, Erza gets bombarded by flashbacks from her past, when she was a child slave working for a black magic cult which wanted to build a tower (that's common black magic cult behavior, I'm sure). Along with her friends, she started a slave rebellion to save Jellal, another friend who had been taken away to be beaten and tortured - but when they won, she found him deeply changed and eeeevil. Worse, he'd been converted to cult-of-doom-ism and, in the years since the slave rebellion, he's built that tower and wants to unleash some sort of death god on the world.
Another backstory gets underway, and this time it's Erza's. Whilst the premise is interesting and feels a lot more exciting than Gray's (sorry Gray), the side characters in this arc have always been less than appealing to me. With a better supporting cast, this would easily go from good to great.
This one's centered on Ezra, now and as a youngster. Darker volume than usual. Still shows some deficiencies in plot handling by Mashima I don't expect to see improve anytime soon.
Idk what it was but even though I was really excited to learn more about Erza’s backstory, it didn’t wow as much as other volumes. I do really appreciate the introduction of religion into this magic world and the consequences of dark magic and forbidden magic. I’m also curious to see more of Juvia and how that will play out. Her crush on Gray is the funniest thing.
Onto Erza and Jellal with their past. A chance for Lucy and Erza to dress up and kidnapping. I like that Juvia just popped up to help with her giant fairytail necklace.
This entire review has been hidden because of spoilers.
Ooooh this arc! Actually what I love so much about it is the fact that there's so much back story about Erza's character, who is by far one of the weirdest but strongest and coolest mage here!Devoured this volume ;)
A new arc is here! We are learning more about Erza this time! What first starts as a fun vacation (thanks Loke) with tons of wonderful moments (aka the obligatory beach chapter/part of any anime/manga series, haha) turns very dark when the group goes to the casino and meets some of Erza's old friends. Battles ensues, kidnapping happens, and we get some very very dark past which made me so sad and angry. Poor Erza, poor her friends. And I guess poor Jellal, though for most of the book I detested him and his attitude and what he did to his friends. Then we learn what happened and I got a bit more empathy for him. I need to read on! See what is next! See if Erza is able to defeat Jellal with the help of her friends + if she is able to stop the R-system. Oh, and that old man! That tattoo! Oh my!
This was all about Erza, and we learn about her backstory as the team went to a resort, and then things went haywire, and it was wonderful, and I am excited to read the series further, so let's go and keep on reading.
I have always loved comics, and I can, and I have. I love comics to bits; may the comics never leave my side. I loved reading this and love reading more. You should also read what you love, and I hope you will always love it. Even though I grew up reading local Indian comics like Raj Comics, Diamond Comics, or even Manoj Comics, now's the time to catch up on international and classic comics, Mangas, Mahwas, and Graphic novels. I am on my quest to read as many comics as I just want to Keep on Reading.
4/5 Volume 10 starts with a couple of small break chapters before diving head first into the Tower of Heaven Arc. Not too many large fights this time around but we are given a lot of Erza’s back story and introduced to a large cast of antagonists that she grew up with. We also get to see more Juvia and I love her dynamic with Gray. It is hilarious.
I’m a couple arcs away from catching up to where I left off with the anime. So far I’m going strong and having fun. 10 down 53 to go.
Our team wearing a sharp red ensemble looking pretty dapper on the cover of volume 10.
With Lucy now having a new celestial spirit with her, she and the guild go on a surprise resort vacation. However, the enjoyment is cut short when Erza is suddenly kidnapped and it turns into a more personal situation when she’s brought to her old friends and learns that one of them is still stuck in the past. We get to learn about Erza and her old friends’ past as orphan slaves determined to escape their broken lives. A (100%/Outstanding)
Now we begin with one of my favorite Fairy Tail arcs... "The Tower of Heaven" arc where Erza must face up to her past a slave for a demonic cult group who wanted to resurrect the black wizard, Zeref. Although I adore Lucy and she is my favorite, Erza is a very close second because of how much she had to overcome not just within this arc but in the whole series. Now let's continue on!
Now the promised Erza backstory. The beginnings of who she is and where she came from. This is a very sad beginning to a story and we start the new arc.
