I don't even know where to begin to describe this book. It is scripture, God's given words. It has scripture for you to read every morning and every night. I have read this book for over two years now, morning and night, it is put together in a way to get the most out of your quiet time with God. I LOVE it and would recommend it to anyone who wants and needs to read God's word daily!
The absolute best daily devotional book any well-meaning Christian could ever pick up and read. I have read this everyday continuously for the last 3 years and will again in 2022. This book is nothing but pure Scripture woven around a theme which is also a verse or phrase from a verse. This was compiled well over 100 years ago with a great deal of thought and diligence and is still blessing and enriching lives today because of the timeless impact of God’s Word. I read both the morning and evening sections before bed and often find myself pondering some of the thoughts into the next day. I have given copies to family and friends with much appreciation from the recipients. Devotional thoughts by great spiritual writers are good, but I prefer to go to the source of all those great thoughts—Scripture!
I'm marking this as read, but I will continue to read it every day as I have since 1973. I read both the morning and the evening reading in the morning. Last year (2022), I started picking out one verse a day to send to a group chat consisting of my grandchildren, two of my children, and three who call me Grama. A few days ago I sent this verse, which defines why I take the time to send them:
so shall my word be that goes out from my mouth; it shall not return to me empty, but it shall accomplish that which I purpose, and shall succeed in the thing for which I sent it. Isaiah 55:11
This is now one of my favorite devotional books. The devotionals are quotes from Scripture strung together around a theme or topic. The book contains a morning and an evening reading for every day of the year. The version I read used the more archaic "thee" and "thou", which would be a frustration for some people.
I found the daily readings to be encouraging and challenging. I believe the Spirit guided the Bagster family as they compiled this. The daily reading is available for free here and other places.
Have audio version of this and often play it while drifting off to sleep. Narrator, Christopher Glyn, has nice voice. (My well-worn hard copy of this devotional is the leather version put out by Anne Graham Lotz Daily Light Devotional.)
I enjoy this new version - mine is NKJV. I have a palm-sized early one inscribed form 1901 in KJV, but it is a bit small for older eyes to read easily. This larger version, containing verses throughout the year from the 66 separate books compiled within the Bible, along with both evening and morning sections per page, is also very easy to read. Thoroughly satisfied.
Not a devotional book per say, but a gathering of Scripture verses (kind of) around a particular theme. Simple, refreshing, easy to use.. and beautiful cover photo
This isn't really a devo. It's just a guided list of scriptures each day that Bagster wrote for his family to read together around the dinner table. There isn't a "devo" out there that has led me to a more intimate relationship than this book. God's voice is amplified through this organized journey into God's word. I would say this is a great companion for anyone who wants to be excited to comb through scripture each day. I'm so grateful for this classic and talk about it with anyone who gets frustrated in their inconsistency in meeting and dwelling with the Lord through prayer and scripture.
At the end of December it will be at least 5 years (not consecutive) that I've used this devotional. I discovered a beautiful 1950 edition at my library's book sale nearly 20 years ago. It is just as good each time through! I highly recommend this very special collection of daily scripture readings.
UPDATE: I had to purchase an ebook copy to be able to read this with my family. Physical book copy: The font is so small that I had to use a page light and magnifier at the same time as holding the phone to read "across the miles" with my Mom each day. Other than that, this book is a great blessing to participate taking turns reading God's Word around a central theme.
Probably the best devotional book ever. It is all Scripture, grouped in two sections for each day. There is continuity in the readings each day but they are taken from many parts of the Bible.
