CAN PURE DETERMINATION DEFEAT A MASTER MAGICIAN? Sakura is awake, but she remembers almost nothing–certainly not Syaoran, who has sacrificed everything to help her. Accompanied by the happy-go-lucky Fai, the intense Kurogane, and the strikingly odd creature Mokona Modoki, Sakura and Syaoran make their way into a new universe where a traveling magician has suddenly become frighteningly powerful and is terrorizing an entire town. Only a few independent-minded stragglers remain to battle for control of their own lives. Fai, the lone magician in the group, traded his magical powers to the dimension witch, xxxHOLiC’s Yûko, before the journey started. Without a weapon with which to fight, can the extraordinary group of friends defeat a master magician who can control the Earth’s elements?
CLAMP originally began in 1989 as a twelve-member dōjinshi circle, but by 1990, the circle had diminished from twelve to seven. Of the remaining seven, Tamayo Akiyama, Sei Nanao, and Leeza Sei left the group during the production of the RG Veda manga. Other former members of CLAMP also included Soushi Hishika, O-Kyon, Kazue Nakamori, Yuzuru Inoue and Shinya Ōmi. Currently, there are four members in the group.
In 2004, CLAMP's 15th anniversary as a mangaka group, the members changed their names from Nanase Ohkawa, Mokona Apapa, Mick Nekoi, and Satsuki Igarashi to Ageha Ohkawa, Mokona, Tsubaki Nekoi and Satsuki Igarashi (her name is pronounced the same, but written with different characters) respectively. The August 2004 issue of Newtype USA, a magazine specializing in events of the anime and manga subcultures, reported that the members of CLAMP simply wanted to try out new names. In a later interview with Ohkawa, it was revealed that initially Mokona wanted to drop her surname because it sounded too immature for her liking, while Nekoi disliked people commenting that her name was the same as Mick Jagger's. Ohkawa and Igarashi, wanting to go with the flow of Nekoi's and Mokona's name changes, changed their names as well.
In 2006, they made their first USA public debut at Anime Expo in Anaheim, California. They were well received at the convention, with 6,000 fans in attendance at their panel.
This volume was lots of action. I don't like action scenes, wish more character development. Fai and Kurogane duo were hilarious. Syaoran is a mystery to me. Sakura is still powerless. Mokone is cutie! In this volume we look for Sakura's memory feathers in Koryo! Korea, most likely. I read the volume with its anime soundtrack, great experience again. Looking forward to unraveling the mysteries.
First, great big sparkly hearts for Fai. I love that he can't whistle, but says "wheet woo" instead. Tee hee!
I have to say that I wish there'd been something - a throwaway line about living alone and needing to protect himself, ANYTHING - to explain Syaoran's crazy fight skillz. Why can a young archaelogist take on giants and crowds of people all at once? And be seemingly indestructible? The Powah of Love can really only excuse so much awesome.
It also kinda bums me out how, even aside from the fact that Syaoran's whole purpose involves a kind of save-the-damsel quest, and Sakura still has that not-entirely-awake thing going on, she sure doesn't do much besides get rescued. I like her character, and would like to see her be more active.
Me gustó. Entretenido. Si encuentro otros volúmenes, los compraré. Al mismo tiempo me compré el 3 de XXX Holic, sin saber que estaban interrelacionados, y XXX incluso me gustó más.
Kurogane and Fai are from different dimensions as well and they also went to the witch for their wish to come true.Eventually, they went with Syaoran to get feathers(Sakura's memory)back from other dimensions in the world.Mokona Modoki is a little pet that takes them to different dimensions to find the feathers and when there is a feather near by,it'll know.
The adventure continues to Koryo (maybe parallel dimension of Korea?). Syaoran and friends meet Chunyan, whose mother was killed by the evil lyan ban (district ruler). Mokona sense Sakura's feather aura inside lyan ban's castle, so Syaoran and Kuroganes have to defeat the evil lyan ban in order to take Sakura's feather back.
Again, CLAMP keeps up their run of interesting worlds; this one uses a variant of another character they have used in the past - Chun'yan (spellings vary with translation) from The Legend of Chun Hyang.
Time for another trip to the library -already- I should have gotten a few more of these :) I like Syaoran. And Tsubasa is just fun to say. This one's a lot less cheesy than Chunchu, but more for kids.
I looove the town with the golden haired ghost! All the clothes make me think of some romantic french ghost story. I love Tsubasa. I think it's great how all their manga series have found a way to meet!
The mystery deepens. Fye and Kurogane fight side by side so well. And I wonder what's up with Fye and the king sleeping on the bottom of the ocean. It seems like the king is the only thing that Fye is really afraid of.
This volume did a lot for Syaoran's character. His interactions with Sakura, and especially that bit at the very end when he calls out the Ryanban's illusion. The ending was a little abrupt for my taste, but I'm gonna try and get the next 3-in-1 ASAP.
Tsubasa is in a way a love letter to all of CLAMP's other works. I went into this having read almost all - definitely all relevant - series by CLAMP, so I can't say for sure, but I think this series is only half as fun if you haven't read the other works (preferably all). If you enjoy Easter Eggs and cameos, Tsubasa is an absolute treat.
For the longest time, Tsubasa was the longest manga series I owned; anything beyond 10 volumes makes me think twice as I find that most lengthy series just drag unnecessarily. However, it was impossible for me to say no to Tsubasa, Sakura and Syaoran from Cardcaptor Sakura have been long-time favourite manga characters of mine, not to mention that I am generally very fond of CLAMP and all their big and small crossovers. Reading a story that combines almost their entire bibliography and with Sakura and Syaoran as the main characters was too good to say no to. It should also be mentioned that this series is heavily interwoven with xxxHolic's plot and should best be read alongside each other.
This Syaoran and Sakura are not the same from Cardcaptor Sakura (although the original Sakura makes a cameo). In essence, this is a story about travelling between dimensions - the same person can exist in different versions of themselves in different universes. Sakura and Syaoran travel between the different worlds - all very different - and meet characters and elements from all across CLAMP's other works. In fact, some characters appear more than once to highlight how the same being can exist and lead a different life in different worlds. It's really fun to see the characters from other stories living different lives, some are funny and some are bittersweet. CLAMP has killed off a fair amount of its characters in other works so it's nice to see some of them leading happier and peaceful lives.
In addition to meeting a whole lot of known characters, there are also a couple of Tsubasa original characters such as Fay and Kurogane who accompany Sakura and Syaoran on their travels. I've grown to love Fay and Kurogane almost as much as I love the other two - so while Tsubasa is very much a homage to other CLAMP works, it's also a very character-driven story with both Fay and Kurogane having intricate and deep personalities. I also have to express my apologies to Kurogane - I always expected not to like him because I'm not very fond of brawns-over-brains type of characters, but I was very wrong about him; great character, smart as well a strong and just a really great guy.
Being a work of CLAMP, it's almost needless to say that the art is beautiful. That being said, this is more of a shounen-esque series which also shows in the art with the somewhat oddly length limbs and a greater focus on action, weapons and muscles. I prefer shoujo art, but the facial art is much the same as other CLAMP works so I can absolutely live with that.
A downside of Tsubasa is plain and simple that it gets confusing. There are time skips, world switching, doubles across different series (xxxHolic) and rather vague motivations from the villain's side. At some point, I just decided to go with the flow rather than trying to make sense of every detail. There's a bit of a loose end, though I wouldn't exactly call it a band ending either. Now that they are working on a sequel, it'll be interesting to see where things will lead to next.
Either way, an absolute gem if you like CLAMP and crossovers, and Sakura, Syaoran, Fay and Kurogane are just a great team of characters - to be fair, Mokona is as much part of the team and deserves a mention too. Finally, I just love these characters.
A few plot points were not explained sufficiently, and honestly came out of nowhere, but other than that I thoroughly enjoyed this volume! By no CLAMP seems to have a better grasp on their environments and have managed the clutter a bit, which was a real issue with the previous volumes. Whether this will change with the next setting, only time will tell. The fight choreography ranges from standard to great depending on the scene. Throughout the volume characters would often restate plot points discussed earlier, which made it seem like everyone had short-term memory loss. This could be due to the serialization of the manga (with a chapter coming out every week or so in Japan), but it did pull me out of the experience a bit. This was also an issue I had with the previous volumes, so I don't think it will go away anytime soon. If you're having fun with the series, I'd definitely recommend continuing with this volume. It's a good addition that cleans up a few problems that were present earlier and the characters are as dynamic as ever. Good luck!
Having found their first ever out-of-world memory feather, Syaoran, Fai and Kurogane are now officially joined by a conscious Princess Sakura. Well, what remains of Sakura. She has vague memories of a desert place and she knows her name, but that's it. With this new challenge the group travels to a second new world. There a town is under the tyrannical rule of a powerful magic user who may or may not have something feather-shaped in his possession.
I'm still enjoying the plot and the characters! Really want to know what the deal is with Fai's backstory, and I'm enjoying his interactions with Kurogane. I'm hoping Sakura gets to be more of a character soon. The way Syaoran has to interact with her, a stranger wearing a familiar and loved face, is a good emotional thread, but I also want to see her get to be her own person, complete memories or no. On to volume 4!
The story is really good, but don't start unless you are in for the long haul! The only thing that bothers me about the art is the hands. Usually, Clamp does well with that, but everyone's hands here are huge! I love the battle scenes, they are quite intense. The personalities of everyone are slowly coming out. I am very happy Sakura is awake now so that she can help. Again, Kurogane is hilarious and Fai is sexy as heck! He is MINE!!!! I also like how both of them have so much more to them than what you actually see. When Fai smiles, best run! When Kurogane laughs, you ain't hiding! I do wish there had been some previous Clamp characters in this, like there were in the first two, but it was still AWSOME!
