The earth has long been the battleground between the forces of Light and Dark. There have been wars that have torn the world apart many times. The Custodes Noctis were created to help fight in those wars, and through the millennia have faced many Dark foes and driven them through the Veil into the Between World. But the world is changing, things are stirring that haven't seen the light of the sun for epochs. The oldest family of Custodes Noctis, the Emrys, have fought on the side of the Light for thousands of years. Now, Rob Emrys is being called by something sinister and unseen, a command he must obey. While his brother, Galen, desperately attempts to save his brother, Rob finds himself unwillingly summoned to what could very possibly be his death—or worse.

I started reading The Summoning right after I finished The Hunt, which was last night. I'm often a very slow reader because I have to picture everything in my mind and make sure I know exactly what each character is doing and why. Well, let me tell you... I didn't have that issue with this book.

Although a novella, it still grabbed me from the first page and had me zipping through the rest of it before I hit the halfway point (which seems to be where a lot of books really start to pick up the pace). With characters who are growing in their own right, as well as the established main characters doing what they do best (get each other into and out of trouble), it was a very easy and fun read... even when all the action congregated towards a suspenseful climax with an unexpected twist. I had no problem envisioning each scene and the people/ravens/creatures in them which made the experience that much more enjoyable.

I cannot wait until the next installment (and from what I hear, it's already in progress!). Until then, I'll just have to start from the beginning and reread the three books, as well as the bonus short story she tossed in, to keep my Emrys fix satisfied!

This novella was a quick, fun read.

Because it is part of a series, I think there were bits of story I was missing, since I haven't read any of the other books, but it was a good story unto itself.

The story is about two brothers who own a rather eclectic book/herb/rare item shop. They also happen to be part of a family who have helped to fight the evil in the world for generations. And something evil is trying to get into the world now, but they aren't sure what.

I don't want to give away any spoilers, so I will leave my review vague. But, if you like stories that are paranormal in nature, with some interesting humor injected here and there and some very interesting mythological lore from different places in the world, they you'll enjoy this story.
