Reaper #2

Hereafter

Rate this book
In Death I could finally see the importance of Life…

After being forced to become a Reaper Council member and being torn away from the one she loves, Rowan Harper must learn to accept her altered Fate as well as her death and move on. A task easier said than done, especially when witnessing those you love suffer in the wake of your death.

When an unlikely ally provides information that could change everything, Rowan sets out on a journey through Purgatory with her beloved by her side and a nonchalant Tracker to learn the true meaning of the word sacrifice. Another task which seems easier said than done, especially with the threat of Purgatory’s ability to corrupt your soul the longer you’re in its grip looming above their heads.

Hereafter starts where Touch left off; Rowan is now reluctantly a part of the Reaper Council. Visiting and seeing her Father in a downward spiral due to the loss of his Daughter and Wife within months of each other, unable to see Jet, seeing her best friend move on without her and the constant calls to Reaper Rulings has Rowan questioning if her seemingly lifetime position at the Reaper Council has a way out, an alternative path, another option of some sort...she wants the life that was prematurely taken away from her back!

Hereafter, was absolutely fantastic! From mid way through to the end I could not devour this book any faster than I did! It became a need to finish it, to see what happened with Rowan. The plot was absolutely amazing! The build up, the execution and the well thought out story line is not one that will be easily forgotten by most readers that enjoy this genre. I cannot begin to explain how much I loved Hereafter. After reading Touch, I had thought that the plot couldn't get much better but I was pleasantly surprised to be proven otherwise.

Jennifer Snyder wrote a fantastic novella that was fast paced but at the same time complete. I never felt like there should have been more to the story or the characters than what was presented to me. Sometimes I feel this with novellas, short stories and even first books in a series.

Rowan and Jet was so relatable and real that I enjoyed reading about them. Granted I did not like their fast-paced "love at first sight" and "I can't live without you" moments considering their short time together, but I did enjoy their relationship excluding these aspects. The secondary characters were also well written and developed, the pages where Rowan's Father made an appearance was heart breaking, and Snyder wrote the scenes so well that his emotions felt like it was tangible and lifting from the very pages of the book.

Hereafter and this novella series as a whole was an exceptionally well written and well developed story. It was thought provoking and the concept of death according to Jennifer Snyder's Reaper Novellas is so creative and so well executed that it has you thinking if this is in fact what truly happens when we die.

This was a good end to the story, even if it maybe was a little too sunny at the end!

I liked the characters in this book, even though it seemed a little rich to expect someone else to take over their jobs for them so that they could have their lives back!
The storyline was good, and it was written well. I did think that the ending was maybe a little too rosy, but overall the book was good, and I’m glad I finally finished the series.
7.5 out of 10.

ORIGINAL REVIEW AT: LITTLE BOOK STAR
Rate: 4.5/5

In my 16 years of existence, this is legit the first time that I cried while reading a book. Who would have thought that I would cry while reading a ya paranormal.. PARANORMAL! Not a contemporary, but a paranormal book. I’m glad to say that I enjoyed Hereafter more than the first book. I love it when the 2nd book is better and has more twist to it. In my review of Touch which is the first book, I said I had a feeling that the sequel would be better. I was right. Hereafter did not disappoint at all. Like Touch, I read it in one sitting and was hooked on since the first chapter.

This book is about a teenage girl named Rowan who became a reaper in place of her mother who committed suicide. It wasn’t her mother’s time to past away yet, but since she cut herself from the world, her daughter had to take her place. Now Rowan wants her life back (this might sound selfish) but in order to do that, she must find her mother who is in Purgatory and ask her to accept to become a reaper again.

There was definitely more adventure in this book, but not a lot of information about the reaping world. Instead, the author sets off Rowan and Jet’s journey to the Purgatory. I completely love how Snyder described the Purgatory. Wow. I was amazed how she pictured the place and how the souls were punished. It was unique, scary, and exciting all at the same time. I felt the same way as Rowan. I felt how she was eager to find her mom, how she was frightened and worried during her journey to Purgatory, but most of all her sadness. The best part of all (and the part where I cried) was when Rowan, her friend/lover Jet, and Val (a Tracker – someone who finds the souls) goes through the process of searching for Rowan’s mom. Oh my goodness. It was the saddest thing ever! I don’t want to say how the process was because if you read Hereafter, I want you to be surprised like I was. My nose was running as much as the tears in my ears were. I love how in this book, we get to know more of Jet and how he died.

I really recommend this to everyone. It’s such a touching paranormal story which also reminds me of a contemporary book because there were so much emotional stuff going on. Choices, sacrifices, and forgiveness, this is more than a paranormal book. The only part that I did not understand and wanted to know more of is why Rowan’s mother’s mom didn’t know that they had the blood of the reaper? Hmm.. Anyways, you should totally check this out. I really enjoyed it and I still can’t believe I cried. xD

This novella is one of the most terrifying journey's into the unknown that you will ever take. This is the story of Rowan, her tragic death before her time, and her travels into the afterlife to get answers. This is an out of body experience that will definitely be a nightmarish dream of what lays beyond our time on earth. I, for one, have always wondered what lies on the other side of death, a realm that is unknown to the living, that no one dares to think about. As I read this novella, I found myself asking many times...If I too was presented with the choice, would I dare to venture beyond, not knowing what I may encounter in the tunnels of the unknown? What if I couldn't find my way back? I think the reader will be contemplating the same questions of themselves. The scenes will haunt you when Rowan visits her Dad after her passing, only to watch what has become of him, helpless, not being able to do anything to help him. She tries to communicate, but to no avail.

This novella will tear at your heart, and rip your soul out, over and over again. The eerie silence of purgatory will be deafening. I felt like I was in the fog of purgatory, viewing the endless stone stairway beside Rowan and Jet, (her reaper). I was scared and panicking with them, afraid of where it would take me. As I journeyed through the passages of what felt like hell, it was as if the dirt walls were closing in and enveloping me also. Val, the tracker, is helping Rowan and Jet through the doors to Salenes, (Rowan's mother's) past. She is going to try to help Rowan find her mother, and tells her, "Things are not what they seem."

Jet is a hauntingly sad character that will clutch at your heart. He has his own agenda, though he doesn't consciously realize it. Jet has mesmerizingly, beautiful sapphire eyes. He is a 17 year old boy, who has passed before his time. He goes with Rowan on her journey. Rowan describes her feelings for Jet as, " love at first sight." You will feel the love that has linked these two young teenagers together for eternity.

This novella will not disappoint! The prose were beautiful. I was swept away by the visualization of each and every new development that came to pass. I was mesmerized by Ms. Snyder's style of writing. I look forward to reading the first two novellas in the series, and reading much more of this wonderful author. This novella will stay with me for a long time to come. I give this hauntingly tragic novella 5 out of 5 gut wrenching, soul searching stars.

I have a new favorite couple. Jet and Rowan, sweet and simple.
They don't have to fight for their love and that's kind of nice. Especially in the world of books today in which there are so many complications for characters.
Seriously there was a point for me where I started wondering if there'd be a love triangle, I was looking for something. What can I say it's been imprinted in many of us. Nowadays it's not good if it doesn't involve that triangle, some paranormal being and a fight against the good and the bad, which causes the character to come close to dying.

Well this book proves them wrong, well except for the paranormal part and the characters near death experience in this case is much much closer.
One and a half of the four mentioned above and still beyond amazing.

Not only is the love story simple but so is the entire story.
More or less, there is a major choice that needed to be made that would end in heartbreak either way. So I guess not too simple.
Anything but, really what with the journey they have to go though in purgatory to find Rowen's mother.

This time we have so much explained from the first book that we or Rowen didn't know. And also get a few answers from Choice that we might not have even bothered to ask. Although maybe you did, I don't know what your views on justice are.

These books are so different from what is out there, more people need to know about these hidden gems.

I received this book in exchange for an honest review.

Argh! This book was so good, but I couldn't help but cry through most of it! Having read Touch I was familiar with Jet and Rowan. When I started to read this story, first I was like okay, this reaper thing sucks for Rowan. Then, I felt so sad for her and I couldn't help but connect with her character.

Her and Jet's characters were so well written, you felt everything they felt. There were sorrow and hard choices in this book and I loved how Jennifer didn't make the story light and fluffy. It was about death and she didn't skate around it just because it was a paranormal romance.

Jennifer did an awesome job with this series of novellas and as I love all her books, I loved this one too!! Five glittery starts for Hereafter!!!

*claps hands excitedly*
Really enjoyed this. It was another very quick read and at times it seemed like no questions were being answered, but at the end, the story came full circle and ended with me saying a loud "AAAW!".

The love story could've been handled differently. It felt forced at times and underdeveloped, but it was still sweet and it proved that love conquers all! Even death.

This book answered the question of why Rowan's mother took her own life. It was a sad revelation, and Rowan finally understood and forgave her mother. Overall, their journey to purgatory was fascinating to read, and that's the only main content that I found interesting in the book.

There were two chapters dedicated to Jet in this book. But I still couldn't connect with him. Anyway, I was glad that the story finally over; I didn't enjoy the book. One positive thing was that the conclusion was great because of the HEA.

P/S: The lesson from the story is that life is short, so enjoy while we're still alive. Also, please forgive and forget.

Loved it!

Omg even though it was a short read it was just enough! It did not leave me feeling like the book should have not ended like others I’ve read.

This was my favorite of the three Reaper novellas!  It was equally dark and gothically eerie, but even more emotionally charged than the first two novellas.  In part, this could be due to the fact that it is a bit longer than either of the others.  This one also has much more of a "journey to the other side" feel to it.

After reading Touch, I felt like I really knew Rowan as a character.  I fet for her, I loved her, I thought I knew her.  But in Hereafter, her character grew so much, so much more depth to her.  The same is true of Jet.  Choice gave us a lot of insight to his character, but he really came into his own in Hereafter.  There is still that underlying sadness, that fear, that darkness.  But there was love and hope, too.  The range of emotions was unbelievable, so much more than what I expected in a short novel.

There were some truly gut-wrenching moments in this book, but they were moments that, in the end, made me appreciate life, even with its ups and downs.  I don't share quotes with every review, but there were a few in this book that truly summed up the emotions of it all.

-Chapter 1, on her father

"At the moment, he sat in the center of our couch, staring down a half-finished bottle of Jack Daniels. It was only 9 a.m. He hadn’t taken his first sip yet, but I could see the battle already beginning to wage within him on whether or not he should. He was broken and I was dead, with no capabilities of fixing him.

-Chapter 3, Harlow on her family

“I’ve waited for them to come back, but they never have. They left me, and I didn’t follow because I was too scared. I was too scared of crossing over, of everything, and now I might have lost them forever.”

-Chapter 6, on Purgatory

"Torment and sin, pain and evil floated through the air in a near suffocating haze. I could feel it surrounding me, brushing up against me, attempting to lure me in deeper and away from the door so I couldn’t escape as though it were alive."

Things to love about Hereafter...

--The settings.  The author is masterful (and has been with all three books) with settings and making them visually there for the reader.  I could see every bit of it in my mind's eye, most particularly Purgatory.
--The emotional roller coaster.  This novella was the epitome of a roller coaster as we went on Rowan's mother's journey through her past, seen through the eyes of Rowan.  It was terrible, emotional, bittersweet.

My recommendation:  A must read after the first two books, and my fave of the three.  This is available as a standalone ebook or bound together with the others in a single volume, paperback or ebook.

In Hereafter, Rowan doesn't want to be a Reaper Council Member. She wasn't meant to be one, but she had no choice. Now she wants to live again, she wants to change things, fix things with her dad and her friend but first she must go to Purgatory to find her mom, to take her rightful place.

It started off a little hard. Rowan now a Reaper, can see her dad go through the tough time of losing his wife and daughter just months apart. He is destroying himself, all alone, having to pack everything up. Rowan sees all of this but can't do anything about it.

Meanwhile she also wishes to see Jet again. Once together again they travel to Purgatory, meet Val and travel to moments of her mom's traumatizing past. They see want happened to her mom when she was younger that led to her suicide. Those moments where hard. But it kind of felt selfish of Rowan to just want to go back to life and leaving the Reaper job to her mom, yeah it also was selfish of her mom for doing that to Rowan and Rowan's dad, but now you see what drove her to her death.

On Touch it felt like Rowan didn't try fighting to live. It felt like she gave in so easily. She never fought for her right to live. It wasn't her fault for what her mom did so it wasn't fair that her life should end and replace her mom's. But in Hereafter we do see Rowan realising that it wasn't her time yet, and that she needed to try something.

We also see more of Jets death and what happened after. His death was also unfair so to see what happened after was sort of like revenge but it was also sad. Jet was the bigger person for what he did.

The ending was cute, I was wondering how it was going to happen, because she supposedly was dead for a couple of months, so was she going to become a zombie or something? The way it ended was just right. Something we all wish could happen. It was cute, and had a happy ending. I liked that what Rowan and Jet had going on together was just enough romance, and cutesyness that it didn't get in the way of what Rowan was trying to do. There were times that she didn't know what to do but, everything turned out alright. It was a good book.

I love this book.

The characters are great, the situations and things they have to go through are brilliantly written, and the reaper world is quickly becoming a favourite of mine. It helps that I was intrigued by how the reapers worked and what they were fighting for. I love how Rowan and Jet have to overcome obstacles to be together, and how they have to make sacrifices. It was all very well done. Especially what happened in Purgatory.

There's not much else to be said:)

Hereafter is the follow-up to Touch. It does a nice job of filling in some of the questions left by the first story. It has a nicely-wrapped ending that is different from what the reader expects after finishing Touch. The physics of the Reaper world is interesting. If you liked Touch, Hereafter won't disappoint.

Nice ending to the series but I need to be honest and say, if I didn't get this novel for free, I wouldn't have bought them or read them, there just isn't enough wondrous content to make me feel it's worth it.

For a short story this was really exciting watching Rowan go through the process of changing from Reaper to Reaper Council member and the love story between her and Jet is amazing. The hunt for her mom is a wild ride right along with Jet's story coming to light.

I'm amazed at what a great story this is in just such a few short pages. I felt that this installment of the Reaper Novellas had a lot more detail and gave a wonder look into Rowan and her world. As far as I'm concerned it ended perfectly. Well worth the read!
