Wolf Creek #2

Duck Fart

Rate this book
Keith Malone is incredibly content. He loves coming around Wolf Creek… great food, great company, and a decent place to rest his soul when he needs it. Plus, it doesn't hurt that his cousins let him dust off his carpenter skills with the odd job here and there. Bailey Mitchell is incredibly nervous. He's come all this way to Campbell River, following up on a chance encounter that happened months earlier, and now he doesn't know what to do. One glance and it's obvious Adam's already taken. What's a lonely Siamese shifter to do? Drake McKale is incredibly grouchy. He's sick and tired of every shifter he's run across making fun of him. Hey, duck's have feelings too! So what if he's smaller than everyone else? Spoiling for a fight he can actually win, he decides to pick on the shy, little kitty in the corner. Only, Drake never reckoned the diminutive cat would proposition him. Or that the big human in the corner would want in on the action. One part burly human, one part shy Siamese shifter and one part twinky (and kinky) duck shifter… layer together and enjoy!**This novella has been previously published. It has been extensively revised.**ABOUT THE Jade Buchanan is a multi-published erotic romance author with over thirty stories published.

I really liked this one. I'm still laughing - the way it's written is too funny. No, it's more than that. The whole idea of a cat shifter, a duck shifter and a human trying to create a working relationship is hilarious. Just like the recipe for the drink "duck fart" sounds too weird to be true, these three beings seem to be too different to fit. And yet, when Keith (the human), Bailey (the cat shifter) and Drake (the duck shifter) started interacting, I could see how things might work. It takes them a little longer to figure it all out...

Bailey is super cute. A bit clueless, trying to come out from his family’s thumb, the cat shifter made me smile with how ‘unspoiled’ and harmless he was. He tries so hard to leave the ‘old Bailey’ behind, but it seems as if he has to fight for every inch of the way. Of course, once the other two get their hands on him that quickly changes, but his natural innocence still shines through.

Drake is one aggressive mallard. The duck shifter doesn’t take crap from anyone, but once he dares to open up he turns out to be a really nice guy. Not that his defensiveness doesn’t still raise its head occasionally, but, on the whole, his character becomes a lot more settled once he figures out that his two mates only want the best for him. Not something he is used to, but he takes to it… like a duck to water (so to speak).

Keith has no idea what he’s getting himself in to with these two shifters. He is immediately attracted to Bailey (only seeing the ‘cute kitty’) and even Drake holds a certain attraction for him. In a way, Keith ends up being the one who holds the three-way relationship together, and is more than compensated for his efforts by two very loving men – once they get themselves sorted out.

If you want a good laugh, some really funny scenes and situations, and are not opposed to some very hot three-way sex between horny male shifters, you will probably like this book. It is even better than the original edition – and that says a lot!

This was a very cute story. I loved it just wish it was longer. It felt like the issues with Bailey’s dad were unresolved. He threatened to send someone to get Bailey and bring him home but the story just kind of ends. If there would have been more of a resolution at the end I would have given it five stars

Of the miriad shifter books out there, what usually entertains me the most is reading how the author makes the human similar to the animal and vice-versa. It's interesting to see that some authors can be original in their choices, not all wolves behave the same as men, etc. And that was interesting in this book because one of the MCs shifts into a duck.

Except this shifter has nothing of the duck, except a few feathers on his head. Similar issues with the cat, just some purring and a rough tongue. That's it. So much wasted potential.

The rest? Is just more of the same. The miscommunication, the running away, the god-awful sobbing. If I never read another book which describes a man sobbing for every little thing, it won't be a moment too soon. It's not that "men don't cry." It's that nobody should be sobbing every 5 minutes. Come on!

So, yeah, no. It was okay, had some funny moments, but that's it. Needless to say, I'm not reading the first or any subsequent books of this series. Nope. Ain't nobody got time for that.

Okay, so it took me a minute to get over the name...cause that's just a damn hilarious title. But beyond that, Bailey, Drake, and Keith are funny, lovable, and passionate - and I enjoyed every minute of this story.

Bailey is a mild mannered Siamese (who'd have thought?), Drake is a cranky duck, and Keith is all human. I wasn't sure how Jade would handle this unlikely trio but she did a fabulous job.

Definitely one that moved to my Droid for portability and any-time reading. Highly recommend this one.

:bent over laughing till my balls feel like falling off: I get the whole duck fart title now and I'm not telling. Read it for yourself to find out. I really had my reserves on reading this one just because and yeah I'm ashamed to say it it's because the title was so corny. I mean come on Duck Fart? :snickering: So sue me! I now admit to being glad I read it and I had more than a few laughs while reading it. I now solemnly swear not to judge a book by it's 'title'. Since it's deceiving.

I wasn't quite sure what to expect from this book, and not being a big fan of ménage I was skeptical.
But it was cute and funny and now I know what happens when a duck, a human and a cat walk into a bar! Lol
It left me with a few questions at the end, but since it wasn't a real deep or serious read, I can live without knowing , but wouldn't mind finding out in a future story!

I actually enjoyed this one more than the previous and I think that is to do with Drake. I love the prickly mallard. It was nice to see him and Bailey matched with a human.
It had some funny moments and was an enjoyable quick read

It was a good and silly little read. I enjoyed it but, with much better pacing and a lot less hurry, I would have enjoyed it more. It was a cute world to get lost in for a bit. I would read book 3.

Okay, I just LOVED this one. LOVED it.

Bailey, Keith, and Drake ... the inexperienced Siamese shifter, the burley human, and the smart-mouthed Mallord duck shifter. Just the concept of those three such different creatures together boggles the mind, and had me interested enough to want to read this as soon as I came across it.

Jade Buchanan loves her twinks - especially the completely innocent/uke ones - but the way she does it makes it more than most authors can passably achieve. By her own admission both Bailey and Drake are twinks, and yet Bailey is the only one who really acts like one, until Keith looks at them both together [ie. the morning after, when he gets up to make coffee and Bailey and Keith both trudge into the kitchen a few minutes later, both looking rumpled and schmexy and just ... YUM:].

They three are the perfect balance: the strong, steady leader that doesn't mind not always being in charge of EVERYTHING, but who doesn't hesitate to step forward if he needs to. The slightly naive, shy, and rather introverted second who is smart but not always quick on the uptake. And the brash third who either bridges the gap between the first two or creates an interesting point of continuous conflict/make-up scenerio effect [or in this case, both:].

There is development and I like that; the whole book isn't JUST about sex. In fact, I think there was only two sex scenes. Maybe three. Most was left touched on or implied, and I didn't realize until after I'd read it that that was the case. I was so fascinated by the story and each man's different take on the same situation that I happily continued on reading.

In short, if books were chocolate, reading this has to be comparable to eating a handful of hershey's kisses; fun to roll around on your tongue, nibble all around the edges, and even what's left behind is too tempting not to lick it off each and every finger individually.

Incredibly amusing and ridiculous at times, but also incredibly mediocre; this is not something you would read when looking to appreciate Literature or the warm buzz of a well developed and conceived M/M romance. However, in saying that, I was not looking for that either. *eyeroll* Trust me to look for a silly read and then rate it badly (my apologies).

Amyway, in my opinion, the hilarious ridiculous moments, which had me snapping my kindle shut with barely contained (embarrassed) laughter, did not balance sufficiently with the unremarkable romance, characterisation and writing.

This was a simple and easy read however, and a somewhat enjoyable one at that. Be prepared for a ludicrous read and be in the mood for one, or I suggest you divert your attention to something else.

Okay, so a duck, a cat, and a guy. That's ... unexpected. Like many of the other reviewers, I didn't know what I'd get from this offering. Happily, it was entertaining. I'm a PNR fan and I love shifters. This throuple was definitely ... original. Keith (guy), Drake (duck), and Bailey (kitty) were enjoyable characters but there wasn't much world building. Granted, I read this out of order so perhaps more background was given in book 1. Other than that, however, book two worked fine as a stand-alone.

Bottom line: steamy shifter menage story; wish it were longer.

Not enough story for erotic romance, not nearly enough sex for erotic porn... The book is also in a desperate need of an editor for everything, from typos and weird grammar to plot holes.
Well, it has a funny title, and some of the sex was hot. Everything else is either pretty meh or eye-rollingly ridiculous.

3.5 rounded to 4 since I love the love the name of this book.

As far as the book goes, I think it is a strong entry into the Del Fantasma world which has many authors contributing to the general storyline of a bar (the Del Fantasma) run by a Vampire. The customers range from every type of paranormal to regular humans that are usually clueless to the paranormal among them.

I liked the characters in this story and could see why both boys sought out much older Keith. My biggest issue with a story like this is the ever present paranormal "mating" sense that is so prevalent in paranormal stories now. It is not nearly as compelling a story at times when the characters know they are meant to be together. It's not that difficult to make decisions when that is the case. Who would stress over moving in together or moving across country if you are positive the guy you are with is your mate? While it is very romantic, it takes away the free-will idea that allows lovers to take a leap, right or wrong, with the one they believe they love.

So as it is with these three. Living in a polyamorous relationship would engender a ton of soul searching between all three main characters in most cases. Especially for the very naïve and innocent Bailey. In this case, if you know they are your mates, what is there to decide or be afraid of?

Since a lot of the angst was taken out at the knees with that standard plot the boys fall back on a bit of misunderstanding and some outside jealousy but they resolve it all pretty quickly.

That said, some of the scenes in this book and the embarrassment and uncertainty of the first intimate moments between Drake and Bailey are pretty funny. I tried to overlook that fact that once Bailey finds himself in the embarrassing predicament he should have been able to just shift and resolve the problem but that solution seems to elude both boys. Either way that scene and the scene when both Bailey and Drake have shifted made me laugh a few times even if I did wonder why they decided to shift and act like that at that particular time.

In the end, I empathized with innocent Bailey, I ached for poor closed off and scared Drake and I sympathize now with all the work ahead for Keith in keeping them all on track. Thank goodness the two twinks fall for adult Keith. I don't foresee any problems he won't be able to love and mentor them through. The hint of D/s is just a tease. I would have liked to see what a different person Drake would be with a strong D/s relationship and some stability.

For those unfamiliar, these books are set around a supernatural bar in San Diego run by vampire Cody who has a way of getting people together using cocktails. Each book is named after a cocktail. There are m/f and m/m and menage (this one is m/m/m) in the series. This is a follow-up of sorts to Jade’s book Black Wolf. Seems a friend dared her to write a story using the cocktail Duck Fart.

Siamese shifter Bailey has come to Del Fantasma to find his Tabby cat friend Andy whom he was caught kissing to the consternation of both families. He arrives to find that Andy is mated to a wolf and he’s devastated. He propositions a human (Keith) but in the end goes home with a mallard shifter named Drake. When Drake gets a cock cage stuck on Bailey, he phones Cody (who had given them the cocktail) who sends Keith to help. Of course this leads to them spending the weekend together. Drake is a total twink with a chip on his shoulder. He was abandoned by his family at age 5 and gets offended easily. Bailey is innocent and polite and gives into his domineering father. Keith is a human who’s parents are both married to “supes” and is more dominant but not alpha-like, but he tries to corral Bailey and Drake. Bailey is totally clueless to the mate thing as he’s still stuck on Andy and Drake keeps expecting everyone to leave him and of course Keith being human is oblivious until his vamp step-Mom puts him straight and he has to find a way to get them all together. On the whole it was a fun little read. I could just imagine Drake getting all testy. Bailey is telling Keith he can cook and he says “Well, it’s not like I can bone a duck or anything” while Drake is beside him. Needless to say that causes some commotion. So there was lots of humour as Keith tries to figure out how to deal with the two young ones and Drake has a lot going on under his tough guy exterior. It was a cute story that I quite enjoyed. You don’t need to read the other stories to get this. I have read Black Wolf by Jade and also Unicorn by Jet Mykles.

For those who are curious, a Duck Fart is a shooter with Canadian Whiskey, Bailey’s and Kahlua.

Didn’t love it, but it’s better written than its predecessor

Warning: This review might contain what some people consider SPOILERS.

Rating: 6/10

PROS:
- The writing is better here than in the first volume, Black Wolf: calmer, more measured, and not so disjointed. (see cons below also)
- I love that there are so many different types of shifters in the world of these stories…wolves, felines, bears, birds, etc.
- Bailey’s naïveté is cute. A little over-the-top at times, but cute.
- I liked seeing Drake’s insecurities at the start of the story (especially since he’s so brazen outwardly) and looked forward to a change once he became more comfortable around the other two.

CONS:
- The main guys’ emotions are all over the place, flipping from one to another very quickly: angry and then fine, depressed and then happy.
- Although this is better written than the previous volume in the series, there are still some issues with the writing that make the book seem a bit on the simplistic side. Here’s an example: Keith is a human, and there’s a reference early on to his having to “school himself not to shift in place.” In a book about various types of shifters, the word “shift” indicates a pretty specific action and shouldn’t be used to describe a non-shifter’s behavior. There are also numerous references to Keith’s resembling a bear shifter, and his hands are referred to as “paws” more than once, yet nothing comes of these not-so-subtle hints. The writing simply isn’t as careful as it should be.
- There are a lot of masculine pronouns throughout the story whose antecedents are unclear. Take this sentence, for instance: “Sure, he would have liked it if he’d gone home with him instead.”

Overall comments: I wouldn’t call this a great story, but the characters are cute, and it’s a decent little diversion for a couple of hours. Everything happens quickly, without much expansion in the descriptions of events or characters’ reactions to them, so it doesn’t have a lot of depth.

Okay, let me say upfront that I am parts amused and repelled by the title of this book! LOL! Its definitely attention grabbing. I chose to read the story because I read the first book in the series and enjoyed it.

I really liked this sequel too. This should not be read without reading the first book Black Wolf because it picks up right where the first one left off even if it focuses on a different set of main characters.

In this installment, we get the story of a Black Family cousin, Keith a big burly man who is a carpenter by trade, but a jack of all trades when necessary. It is also the story of Bailey a siamese shape shifter who is mentioned in the first story as Adam's friend. And the other main lead is a new character, Drake, a mallard duck shifter.

The three guys come together when Bailey leaves home and comes seeking Adam to see if he has a chance with him. That is until Bailey sees Adam with the big wolf that he is mated to. Bailey bumped into both Keith and Drake at the bar and was first attracted to Keith's quiet strength before his angst over seeing Adam taken and not knowing what to do with himself leads him to take up an offer from Drake for a one night stand. The one night stand barely gets started when a problem develops that requires a locksmith which reintroduces Keith.

The guys all feel an attraction and spend a weekend exploring it. Each man is so different and brings something different to their threesome. They all enjoy what they have together, but it may take some intervention to keep them from going their separate ways. It takes some Black family intervention to save the day.

This was a light, fun romp where a sweet, innocent, uptight Siamese, a world-weary, dirty mouthed and not all he seems Mallard, and a steady, calm, willing to be open human all come together to form one of the most unlikely menage (more like menagerie) et trois in fiction.

I can't wait for the next installment to the series.

First, I want to say that I read this book a while back, but when I went to see if it was on goodreads, I did not find it as it has a slightly different title then its Amazon title. So I went to the authors web site to comment on it there. Now that I've found it on GR its only proper to write a review as I truly enjoyed this book. I have read this book two times so far, and will likely read it again.
I was able to connect to the characters and grew quite fond of them. As the story progressed I found them to be complex individuals who have their own strengths and weakness, giving them a sense of being 'flawed but growing' and together they complemented each other. And then there is Keith, a mere human, whom has his hands full trying to bring his two partners in line.
I found this novella to be an emotionally touching, at times laugh out loud funny, endearing love story.
I liked the way that Drake takes on the personality of his shift form (Mallard) of sassy, loud, and in your face, and how Bailey’s personality is quite similar to a Siamese cat (though mine was a bit more of a itch when she didn’t get her way).
The pace of the book is smooth; the opening scene grabbed my attention, and I read straight through.
I enjoyed the many detailed scenes. I could almost smell drake’s filthy apartment, and loved the visualization of Keith’s bungalow.
I hope to read more stories with these characters.
I look forward to continuing on in the wolf creek series.

This book, man. Gonna start off by saying I didn't read the first but I didn't feel that hindered me in any way from understanding the story.

Now, first thing, I caught typos/errors in a few different places- nothing overly horrid but still more than the acceptable amount in my opinion. Also, there was a lot of repeating- using the same tired words (Yeehaw? Really?) or sometimes even the exact same observations from a previous chapter. I swear Keith thought that something was "really annoying" at least three times.

With that said, while this wasn't exactly an inspired piece of writing, it was still enjoyable. For being on the shorter side, the three MC's are surprisingly well-developed. It was fun and goofy and I literally laughed the whole time. It was sweet and sometimes sexy. All and all it was an easy read. If you're looking for something silly and lighthearted to read with shifters/menage, then this is the book for you.

Honestly, on a normal day it probably would have been rated two stars, but it made me laugh so much that I just have to give it three.

Cute, funny, not serious at all and just serious enough.

This series certainly has fun with the conventions of the genre.
Insta-love is a given between fated mates (even though they wisely don’t jump the gun on the issue of calling it that), and we have lots of shifter types with amusing quirks.
The stories appear sex-based, but in the greater scheme of things they’re really quite romantic too. Especially compared to some of what this genre usually throws at me.

Either way, the result is highly satisfying and just damned cute.

The only thing I wonder is that in book one condoms were a non-issue, yet here the guys are using them without comment. I am not complaining, just confused about what it might say about the shifter lore specific to this series.

With a title like this, how can you not be intrigued?!? This time, a duck shifter is in the mix! Again, like Black Wolf, a revised and expaned edition is coming soon, and this was a pretty interesting story originally so I'm curious what will happen with the story! The character of Drake is a little tough to take at first because he has a lot of anger - but then he takes a lot of crap being a duck shifter, so that is part of it, and he has other vulnerabilities that come out that definitely make it a worthy journey to go through this book, and I look forward to the upcoming new editions!
And for those who keep track of cover art, it looks like they are PL Nunn covers - yummy!!!

3.5 out of 5 stars

This is an entertaining read with one of the strangest titles I've ever seen. Duck Fart is a drink served up at Del Fantasma, the bar at the heart of the collection of stories of the same name. In this book the drink helps bring together a shy Siamses shifter, a spitfire, and kinky, Duck shifter and the big human who'd love to have both for his own. Nicely written with likable characters, hot sex, lots of humor and just a dash of D/s made this story with the funky name quite enjoyable.

This was a really cute m/m/m story with a human, cat, and duck. The characters fit very well together and I liked how Bailey was hung up on another and didn't catch on the the mate thing so quickly. I only wish there was a little more closure at the end with Bailey's family.
