Family, obligation and love... sometimes the choice is made for us.
Magick is real. And there is a secret world complete with its own agency, Veritas. Their purpose is to control those who would wield their power over "regulars" or threaten the secrecy that keeps them all safe from the persecution that nearly destroyed them centuries ago.
For Cassie, a mixed blood witch, it's the only world she's ever known and now she is struggling in her role as agent.
For Drew, a witch born to a non-magickal family, the discovery answers many of his questions. It is also the cause of tremendous loss and pain. And now, as he and Cassie attempt to find his missing brother, rumored to be working with a rogue witch and cult leader, it threatens to take the last of his family.
HK lives in the frozen hinterlands of the far North. The long, cold months provide ample opportunity to hunker down with her computer and create adventures far more enticing than scraping ice and getting frostbite.
Between books HK reads voraciously. Anything with a good plot and compelling characters are her broad parameters. One is as likely to catch her with a copy of Don Quixote as with the latest Kristen Ashley.
When not writing or wowing the corporate world by day, HK practices martial arts, plays with her dogs and matches wits with her teen. Next winter she intends to brush up on her Spanish and escape the cold for somewhere more tropical.
Paranormal is her favorite genre and science fiction because both address the possibilities we have not yet realized and the darker things we have. Her favorite premise: “what if?”
“Four stars: A fun book with realistic witches and magic.
Cassie is a witch of mixed blood. Her blended heritage is a source of turmoil in her life and in her magic. She is a recent graduate of the Academy, a place where witches go to learn their craft. She is now an agent for Veritas, an organization set up to hunt down rogue witches. Unfortunately, for Cassie she has spent the last few months tagging along with her adept and capable partners Julia and Quan. She has yet to prove herself and master her magic. Judgement day is upon her, and it may be too late. The head of Veritas explains to Cassie that she is being sent on one final mission. Either she will step up and redeem herself, or she will be dismissed, forced to go home in disgrace. With little hope of proving she is indeed a talented witch (she doesn’t even believe in herself at this point), Cassie heads to Florida to help investigate rumors of a mysterious man named, Terry Pritchard. He is somehow coercing women to leave their families and jobs to follow him into his cult. Either he is using some powerful magic or some type of mind altering drugs. What is supposed to be a routine case, turns into something far more dangerous. Cassie, Julia and Quan meet Drew the owner of a night club. He in his own right, possesses some of his own power, but he doesn’t seem to be aware of his abilities. Turns out his older brother, Brandon is partners with the despicable Pritchard. Can Cassie somehow unlock her magic, track down the odious man and help save Drew’s brother?
What I Liked: *I always like books that portray witches as people that live among us, for the most part blending in, but able to use magic. Ms. Savage does just that in her novel. Her characters are capable of wielding power by tapping into the source that fuels their energy. Some like Quan, seize energy from water, others use fire or air. The aspect I liked most is that this story is believable, in that witches could still be among us, just hidden after the years of persecution. If you like paranormal books with a realistic feel, you will enjoy this one. *Cassie, first I appreciated that she is of mixed blood, part Sioux Indian. She is a character that you don’t run across everyday. I admired her tenacity and strength to pursue her path despite criticisms from her family. Even when her back is against the wall and she is facing failure, she keeps trying. She is an admirable protagonist, plus she has an adorable guinea pig. *Quan was an intriguing character for me. He is a powerful witch of Asian heritage. He is truly a man of few words and great power. He draws his strength from water and when he is ready to fight he can bring it. I only wished that there was more of him in the novel. *This book portrays two brothers, Brandon and Drew. I loved the deep bond the two of them share. The way they have each other’s backs and the lengths they are willing to go to protect the other. They are great guys.
And The Not So Much: *I loved the descriptions of the many different types of witches and the powers they utilize. I would have liked a bit more insight on all the different types of witches. Hopefully, in the next book I will be able to learn more about the various powers of witches. *In the beginning of the story, Brandon and Drew’s parents are murdered and the boys are left orphaned. Later, in the book the circumstances for the deaths are revealed. I wanted to know what drove the killer to murder the parents? Was it just an accident or was there more to it? *The book takes awhile before it gets going. Once the action digs in though, things get exciting. This is one of those books that is a slow bloomer. It is worth the wait, so be patient.
The Path, is an exciting, thrilling adventure that has modern witches using their powers to track down the bad guys. If you like paranormal books with a more realistic feel to them, then this is a book that should suit your taste. Read about witches, who tap into the many different types of energies flowing around us to utilize their magic. This book has danger, romance and mystery. An entertaining beginning to a new series.

H.K. Savage built the tension and momentum like a freight train until reaching the incredible crescendo that ended up being more than I could have hoped for. To say that Savage has a talent for weaving plot, action, character development, and tension together to bring to life a fast-paced thrill ride would be an understatement. She effortlessly creates unique characters you can relate to while giving them those small qualities that makes them so believable. The Path is a creative approach to an age old story. "Witch Police". So unique and intriguing. I am eagerly awaiting her next installment where I can once again join Cassie Porter and her partners, Julia and Quan, on their next case to stop those who choose to use their powers to harm others. If you love a smart adventure, don't miss out on The Path by H.K.Savage.
Cassie Porter is an Agent working for Veritas. And Just waing for her Powers to kick in. (it's either that or go insane).as that is what always happens with mixed bloods like herself.
She is given one last assignment to do. on this assingment she and her two colleaugues Julia and Quan. Are to Investigate the Unrestrained Magic being used by Terry Pritchard.
During Cassie's Investigations she meets Drew Carter a handsome young co owner of the very Nightclub that is under investigation. and right from the start you know somthing is going to happen.
This Book, admittedly was a bit delayed by myself in reading. read the first chapter and it really didn't suck me in. however i persevered, and read the Second chapter, and i Honestly just kept reading!
So Now i'm left feeling silly that i was ready to put the book down after one chapter. and honestly if you don't read that chapter you won't get what is going on later on.
This is definately one book that i would be able to do a re read.(numerous times i think).
It's Definately a keeper. after all my sillyness i grew to love the main character cassie, and you find yourself really cheering her on in her quest to discover herself.
I was asked to read this Due to my perspective as a wiccan. some of the themes in this book are derived from several nature based religions(and some not so much) and they have been delicately meshed.. yes meshed.. together to not only be respectful but also what HKS has done is create an alternate view of the world, one we "Normals" have no idea existed.
I really did enjoy Savage's take on witchcraft and how she wove it with the Native American culture from Cassie's background.I love when I find a Paranormal story that keeps it real.
Cassie is very relatable in her struggle's throughout; Awkward and Unsure of herself and her abilities in the beginning she struggles to gain control of her Majik. Once she finds that balance and harness's the control needed to wield her powers, Katie Bar the Door! Then we have some steamy Romance; sent on this mission to investigate the use of majik at a nightclub we meet Drew and Brandon Carter. Brothers unaware of their majikal ability, 1 of which is being unknowingly used by or male antagonist, Terry Pritchard. Cassie and Drew find themselves more drawn to each other with each passing minute until the Desire reaches it's peak and a relationship ensues. Still struggling with emotions in overload and self doubt, our young lovers now have to decide if it's truely an undeniable attraction or a side effect of their shared majik.
Woven into the story you are introduced to Julia and Quan whom are formidable characters in their own right. Without Julia's unwavering belief in Cassie and her abilities our story might have taken a different turn. Savage maps out a story of loss and tragedy that leads to a struggle to find the truth then ends with the triumph that lies beneath discovering who you are, and what your meant to be. I will end my review with one of my favorite quote's from this book....
"You cannot follow your own path if someone else is choosing it for you."
I found myself putting off this book in the beginning because it was a little slow for the first couple of chapters. The fact that the story didn't grab me immediately, is one of the reasons I didn't give this book 4 stars.
Once I decided to commit myself to getting past, what I hoped was just a rough beginning, I was very happy that I did! The story does, indeed, redeem itself just a few chapters in. I found that I was halfway through and totally invested in the characters in just a few hours.
What I most thoroughly enjoyed about this story was that the main character, Cassie, really comes into her own by the end of the story. She started out unsure of herself and her talent as an investigator for Veritas, and a fledgling witch. After a chance meeting with the story's antagonist, however, Cassie discovered her power and just progressively gets more and more amazing.
Also, I enjoyed the romantic aspect of the story. I found that Ms. Savage was able to weave the romance in while not at all taking away from the rest of the story and what was going on while Cassie and Drew's relationship changed.
I will definitely read the next installment, in what I hope will be a series. I am a fan of Savage's writing.
The beginning of this book had more build up than I normally enjoy. We are introduced to all the main characters which is understandable and I don't fault the author. There are some important "facts" that she divulges to us that are important to the story. If you like a book with a detailed lead up then no problemo! It all comes together as you continue reading and then you find you're thankful for all the pertinent details. With that being said once it starts and you get passed the "getting to know you" parts it picks up and starts running! You start investigating right along with them. You get to play detective and start really understanding how the world of witches works in H.K. Savage's mind. Meet Cassie. She's a mixed blood witch that hasn't yet come to her own. She has pressures to perform her magick before getting kicked out of the witch police force known as Veritas. At the start of the book we find a not so confident young woman who doesn't want to fail anyone in her life. Everything seems hopeless for her magick abilities no matter what she tries...until she meets Drew while on a case with her partners Julia and Quan. Once she figures out how to harness her magick abilities we get to watch Cassie grow into her confidence! I sure do love a confident heroine! :) Drew is a witch that doesn't understand why his whole life he's been able to get people to really like his presence and his attentions. When he meets Cassie he's reluctant to hear what she has to say...after all she may be the downfall to the mysterious dealings of his brother Brandon. Drew has had a feeling for some time now that his brother may be into some illegal activities. No matter what though he wants to keep his brother from the authorities. He will try and keep them on the path of who he thinks is the real villain Terry Pritchard. Terry the guy that has changed his brother since the day they met him. We get such a distaste for Terry and our hatred grows for him as we continue our journey throughout this book. That's how awesome a writer Ms. Savage is! An author that can evoke feelings is a great writer in my book! Drew, however, wasn't ready to be drawn in by the charming young witch. With his feelings getting all mixed up and a new world getting uncovered, will he survive the race to save his brother? Getting Cassie and Drew together is like an awesome tag team that works well together, if only they could figure out their feelings for each other. Are they being pulled together through the force of their magicks or is it real? While trying to hunt for the mysterious Terry and the fugitive Brandon they will clash with some scorching kisses and feelings of turmoil that will have you turning the pages to see what happens next! I'm rooting for those two! They are both beginning to find their ways and I can just feel the story there! It's a world that I would love to continue reading about! I think she has just scratched the surface and there are great things to come with this series! I want to see Cassie and Drew possibly working together, I want more of Julia and Quan (Cassie's partners)! I want more HOT scenes between Cassie and Drew, and okay I just want more Savage!! I give this book my thumbs up!!
Cassie Porter is a witch in training well actually she is an investigator in training for the Veritas agency. She has two partners who have taken her under their wings to help train her how to use her powers without them getting away from her and she loses control of them. Cassie has tried so hard to learn how to control her powers and to make something of herself. She would very much like to make her family proud of her especially her father since her mother is no longer living. She will do whatever it takes to keep her job as an investigator and to help her family. That might not be as easy as she thinks with a heart like hers which is made of gold.
Cassie is on what just may be her last assignment for the agency if she doesn’t learn how to use her magic without it getting out of control. So with this job she will go beyond the call of duty if that is what it takes to come out on top. But things are not a simple as she really wanted them to be. This guy Terry Pritchard is a witch also may have turned out to be a lot stronger than they anticipated. He takes and uses powers from other witches to make him stronger. He has plans to take over the whole world.
Cassie and her partners get a clue that he hangs out at this night club on occasion. This night club is owned and operated by two brothers who lost their parents when they were young. The oldest brother has for whatever reason gotten himself involved with this Pritchard dude. Most of the time his brother Drew has no idea where he is, what he is doing or when he will or if he will ever see him again. Drew will do anything for his brother Brandon even if It cost him his own life.
When Cassie goes to the club undercover looking for Pritchard or trying to find a clue as to his whereabouts. She meets up with Drew and boy do the sparks start flying. Only Cassie is not sure if what she is feeling is her or Drew after she finds out what Drew’s magical powers are. Beside all that sometimes they have to cross the line to find the bad witches before they kill or ruin more people’s lives.
Cassie is determined to save both of her partners Julia and Quad’s life as well as Drew’s life and Drew is determined to save his brother and Cassie both. So who will save who? Will they all make it out alive or will someone die while trying to save someone else? Who will live and who will die? Well I could tell you I guess but as I say “that is not my story to tell”. That is H.K. Savage’s story to tell. And if you pick up a copy of The Path today you will not be disappointed that is if you like witches and magic. Which are two of the things that I can’t get enough of.
I hope this is not the last book in this series. I would very much love the opportunity to read more about Cassie, Drew, Brandon, Julia and Quad. I just know they have a lot more that they would just love to tell us about. I can’t wait to read more of H.K. Savage’s stories. I think I have found another favorite author to add to the top of my list.
The Path is quite different from any other witchy book out there at the minute. I really did enjoy the book as a whole, but I feel like there was a little something missing for me and I can't quite put my finger on what it was. The book has a great storyline and is well written, but I think I just lacked a connection with main character Cassie.
Cassie is a witch, she is in training to become an investigations officer at Veris (like a witching police force) . She has mixed blood, both water & earth magic, which she is yet to come into and get a handle on. The mission she is going on is Cassie's last ditch attempt to get a grip on her magic and secure her job at Veris.
Julia and Quan are trained officers and partners at Veris. They have Cassie in their care, helping to try and train her. They all set off on their mission together, to investigate reports of magic being used in a nightclub.
When they arrive at the club in question they meet a man named Drew. Who seems to have un-trained magic that he is unaware of. But he is not the source of the magic they are looking for. After some digging around they find out that Drew's brother Brandon and a man named Terry Pitchard are behind the sinister magic being used in and around the club.
Quan and Julia head off after Pitchard, leaving Cassie to protect Drew. It becomes apparent that the pair have an attraction to each other. Cassie makes a breakthrough with her magic and really comes into her own.
Can they put a stop to the evil man that is Terry Pitchard? Who is using and abusing the people at his disposal. He is a wicked man and what is more chilling is he totally believes that what he is doing is for the greater good, he is quite a delusional man.
The ending is very good and I was very pleased with the outcome. The book was a little slow paced at the beginning, but the ending really picked up paced and was action packed. I would love The Path to be the first book in a new series, as there is so much more I would love to know about the interesting world HK Savage has created here.
My favourite characters were:
Julia & Quan: Man, I wish we got to read more about this pair, they are so intriguing. They are both very powerful, Julia is really likeable, a sort of motherly type. Quan comes across sullen and moody, but I think that is all on the surface and he is definitely a force to be reckoned with.
Drew: I love Drew, he went through so much so much throughout the book. He handled everything very well and I think he is an all round good guy.
Special thanks to HK Savage for sending me a review copy.
The book begins by introducing two young men, Brandon and Drew. Their parents have been killed; they are sent to live with an aunt until Brandon is 18 and can take care of Drew on his own. I felt great sympathy for Drew; his world changed in an instant. I’ts obvious that Brandon knows more but will not share it. And this all takes place in the prologue.
Next we meet Cassie. Cassie comes from two lines of witches making her a “mixed” witch. The only problem, she cannot tap into her powers.
Do you recall, as a child, having an adult tell you they expect great things from you? It’s flattering but it can be turned inward, into perfectionism or being too hard on yourself. Cassie is way too hard on herself; she has boxed herself in.
Cassie is an investigator for Tutela ab Veritas, a group that polices magick users. She has been told if she doesn’t tap into her gifts she may lose her job. That’s a lot of pressure, no wonder she’s plugged up and cannot access the witch part of herself. It was refreshing to see that Cassie had to struggle a bit to find herself. It’s not fun when a main character accidentally pops up able to handle anything thrown their way. It’s not believable. Cassie had to work at it and I REALLY like that about the book.
Cassie is given one last chance to show what she can bring to the table. There’s a case involving Drew who currently co-owns a night club with his brother Brandon. She and her partners, Julia and Quan, set out to investigate.
Cassie ends up thrown into the situation, forcing her to figure out her powers. The investigators find that Drew and Brandon are witches as well. Drew and Cassie end up discovering their power together. Their attraction is electric although I wish there had been more romance involved.
I enjoyed the different types of witches and the displays of their powers; it’s creative. The action scenes were engrossing. There is an array of unique characters. I liked that the book dealt with religious issues and the reverse discrimination from religious zealots.
But, I have a couple of problems with the book: 1) It is too slow starting out. There’s too much information about Cassie’s background. 2) The ending dragged on too long. I think at least 50 pages could have been cut from the book without affecting quality.
That said, the writing, editing, plot, character development are just fine. It may just be me.
If you’re looking for a good witch series, check this one out. You may really like it.
The Path is a Paranormal Romance by author H.K. Savage. This novel centers around Cassie, a mixed blood witch who struggles with her powers. Cassie is an agent for Veritas, an agency that polices witches. Because of the issues with her own powers, Cassie is on the verge of losing her job and letting down her family. She basically has one more chance to prove herself – which is a difficult case involving one of the most horrible witches the company has ever dealt with.
This is a great story involving witches, murder, mystery, and romance. Cassie is assigned to question Drew to see what his brother's connection is with the rogue witch, Terry Pritchard. It turns out, that Drew has some magick of his own that he is unaware of and Cassie ends up needing to protect him. With these two spending so much time together, it becomes hard for them to resist the attraction they feel for one another. This leads to some nice steamy moments – passionate but also PG-13 at the same time. For those of you who like a little steam without all the graphic details – this is for you!
This book is well written and also well edited. The story was mostly told from Cassie's point of view, but the viewpoint sometimes changed to other characters. On one hand, I liked it because it was nice to know what the other characters were thinking – but at the same time it was sort of distracting. Parts of the book were a little slow, but then I felt that the ending was a little rushed. I didn't feel completely satisfied with the ending – I just wanted to know more about what happened. I don't know if this is going to be part of a series or if this is a stand alone book. Overall, it was a good book and I would read more by this author.
Cassie like most American's has mixed parentage which on it's own isn't a problem but it is when both of her witch parents have different magical abilities. Cassie as struggled to find herself as a witch with the different powers at odds with each other. Her partners Julia and Quan have been very patient and supportive but her training can't last forever so it's now or never!
A series of death's leads the trio of Verita's investigators to Flordia where their investigation is centered around the Carter brothers and their shady business partner. Drew, the youngest of the Carter's has a pull like no other which immediately raises Cassie's hackles. With the investigation speeding up and danger coming from every corner Cassie is on her own with her charge Drew and a whole host of complications.
Great new series from HK Savage. Characters are all well written and like-able with depth to them. You can't help but find something in common with Cassie through your empathy with her personal short comings or her endearing personality. Drew to me seems the ideal man. On the surface he's tough and sure but underneath has the vulnerabilities of everyone else.
Alot of action and mystery which peaks continuously throughout keeping the storyline fresh and intriguing.
Some books struggle to bring their characters to life but that couldn’t be further from the truth when it comes to The Path. I was impressed with the author’s ability to portray her male and female characters equally convincingly. The “you are magical, yes magic is real” trope can sometimes be a bit tiresome, but it worked splendidly in this story, serving as a reasonable explanation for things otherwise inexplicable, and remaining as an obstacle for Drew along the way. He and Cassie worked rather well together too, balancing one another out and learning from each other rather than letting their differences get in the way. We don’t often give kids enough credit or expect them to be able to handle difficult situations, so it was refreshing to read a story where the young protagonists held their own, even if they do get help here and there. I’d recommend this even for those who don’t typically read fantasy- everyone loves a good mystery! **** 4.5 stars****
I enjoyed this book - especially like how HK Savage sets her novels is areas I've lived (Tampa, Minneapolis) - I can completely picture the story in my mind. There was an unsettling undercurrent in this book that bothered me - I can't quite put my finger on it, but it feels something like the characters didn't seem as plausible as normally found in Savage's other novels (noted - it is fantasy...what is plausable?). I'm all in for a sequel solely to hear more about these interesting characters.
i got this e-book for review, i really liked this book alot, i could hardly put my nook down and stop reading, this book is very very good and very interesting, i really enjoyed this book alot, i am really glad that i was able to review this book, i can not wait to read more books by this author, i give this book 5 stars, i highly recommend this book to everyone.
