ALMOST SUMMER is the sixth book in the Fools Gold series and I can’t believe I waited so long to read this collection of funny and romantic stories. There are forty three books in this series and I’m hoping to get a huge batch of them read this year.
ALMOST SUMMER is the story of Paige McLean. Paige has always lived in Fool’s Gold and has always wanted to travel the world yet would never leave her Aunt Sophie. Now, she has the chance to and still she hasn’t left. When Simon’s friend arrives for a visit while Montana is pregnant (and turns out to have measles), Paige offers to look after him during his illness. Alistair’s british charm and world travels are too much for her to resist. Once again we are faced with a story of a female from Fool’s Gold who falls in love with a man destined to leave town. We’ve seen that before, but it still works. Hang on friends, this story is so funny!!
Make yourself a yummy hot drink, get your favorite blanket and get on the couch. ALMOST SUMMER is an awesome way to spend an hour in the afternoon or evening. I’m so excited to continue with the Fools Gold series and learn more about my new found friends. Once you start ALMOST SUMMER you won’t be able to put it down and will find yourself cheering for Paige and Alistair as they try to navigate their way through a very different and unique situation. Susan Mallery will pull you in from the very first page and never let you go!💜
When Alistair Woodbury needs a place to stay, he goes to live with Paige McLean for a while, and they end up falling in love, but first they have to let go of things in their past so they can start thinking about having a future together. Their love story was really cute, this was another adorable romance.
Dr. Alistair Woodbury has arrived in Fool’s Gold for a visit with his friend and colleague, Dr. Simon Bradley (Only Yours, September 2011). Unfortunately, one of Alistair’s vaccinations didn’t take, and he’s infected with measles, thanks to an outbreak among the children in the Southeast Asian village he’s just left. Simon may be a good friend, but since his wife Montana is seven months pregnant, he’s not about to risk her exposure to the disease. Alistair will have to find somewhere else to stay.
Paige McLean, part-time yoga instructor, shows up at the Bradleys for Montana’s yoga lesson and offers Alistair a place to stay. She takes care of the visiting Englishman while he’s ill, and the two soon bond. Both are dealing with grief. Paige’s only family, her great-aunt, a nun who brought her up after Paige was orphaned at five, died only six months ago. Although it has been several years since Alistair’s wife and infant daughter were killed in an automobile accident, his guilt over being out of the country when they died has kept his grief alive. Then there’s the travel. Like Simon, Alistair is a plastic surgeon who goes all over the world to perform surgery on patients with birth defects or injuries. Paige has a passion for travel, but she felt a responsibility to stay in Fool’s Gold to care for her elderly aunt. She also has passionate feelings for the sexy viscount who is her houseguest, feelings fully returned by Alistair who thinks of Paige as his angel.
This is a sweet story, low in conflict but with a definite sizzle factor. Paige is funny and likeable, and Alistair is a dream. Who expects a viscount in a contemporary romance? Spoiler: I was especially pleased that while Alistair, like all other Fool’s Gold visitors, falls in love with the town, he’s not ready to settle in one place. He and Paige will see the world together, returning to Fool’s Gold between trips.
Sweet and short (just 49 pages) story about a visiting doctor and the "angel" that nursed him back to health. Alistair had come to Fool's Gold to visit Simon and Montana (Only Yours), but he has come down with the measles and Montana's pregnant so he can't stay with them. Paige offers to take him in and cares for him through his illness.
I really liked both Alistair and Paige. Alistair is a British doctor who travels the world caring for the underprivileged. He lost his wife and daughter in an accident several years earlier. He carries a lot of guilt and sadness because he wasn't there when it happened and has decided that he won't marry again. But Paige's beauty and caring nature have him wondering what it would be like to be loved again.
Paige is stuck in a bit of a rut. She was raised by her aunt, a nun, after her parents' deaths, and her aunt passed six months ago. Paige has always wanted to travel, but expected to take her aunt along, and is now having trouble motivating herself to go. Listening to Alistair's stories and telling him her dreams, he gives her the push to follow them. But as she's making her plans, she realizes that there's someone she can picture being with her at last.
The story may have been short, but it had all the best parts of a Fool's Gold story. Paige is sweet and fun, Her gentle teasing is just what the brooding Alistair needs to finally move past his grief. Alistair is the hero, healed by the love of a good woman. He's a little bewildered by what he's feeling, and I loved the conversation he had with Simon. Though we only see a few of the series regulars, the caring nature of the people of Fool's Gold is illustrated by the food provided to Paige while Alistair is sick. I loved the ending, which incorporates both the love of travel Paige and Alistair have and their love of Fool's Gold.
This e-book novella is part of Mallery’s Fool’s Gold series. When Alistair’s visit to his friend, Simon, endangers Simon’s wife, Montana’s pregnancy (he has the measles), Paige offers Alistair a place to stay and nurses his back to health.
Paige is still in mourning for her Aunt, who she grew up with after her parent’s deaths. Paige has always wanted to see the world, but feels stuck in Fool’s Gold, so she turns to Alistair, whose stories about travelling all over the world as a surgeon makes her yearn to follow his lead.
Alistair hasn’t felt the pull to stop his travels, even after the death of his wife and baby daughter, but he sees how at home his friend, Simon, is in Fool’s Gold, and Paige’s presence calls to him.
This is a very sweet book and both characters are likable and fit together well. It really whet my appetite for the next book in the Fool’s Gold series…and stands up to the rest of the books before it, despite the lack of hanky panky that I enjoy in Mallery’s books.
Ainssssss me encanta!!!!!!!! Love is in the air...
Another nice novella - but another person who I was hoping would get a whole story of his own! This is Alistair, the doctor who is friends with Simon-the-surgeon who we encountered on the phone in a previous book. We already knew that he'd lost a wife and child so I was hoping we'd get a full length story to show him finding love again. But this is still nice and satisfying even if I wish it was longer!
This one should have been a full length story. I hope there's more of this couple later. I was hoping to see Simon's friend come into Fool's Gold. But this romance went way too fast. Love both characters too much to rush through their story.
Almost Summer is book 6.2 in Susan Mallery's Fool's Gold series. Paige McLean's world changed when Alistair Woodbury came to Fool's Gold and needed a place to recuperate from the measles. Paige Mclean provided Alistair with a place to stay. Paige and Alistair both have secrets that control their lives. Will the time together allow them to open up with each other so they can heal? The readers of Almost Summer will continue to follow Alistair Woodbury and Paige Mclean to discover what happens.
Almost Summer is an enjoyable novella and the second book I have read by Susan Mallery. I enjoy how Susan Mallery incorporates grief and guilt into her plot and how they affect the people involved. I engaged with this book from the first page and enjoyed the way the characters intertwine with each other throughout this book. I did love Susan Mallery's portrayal of her characters and how they interact with each other. Almost Summer is well-written and researched by Susan Mallery. I like Susan Mallery's description of the settings, which complemented the book's plot.
Naja, was soll ich sagen.
What a beautiful story about two people not particularly looking for love, but finding it accidentally.
This novella is about Paige and Alistair. Paige has always lived in Fool's Gold and has always wanted to travel the world yet always wouldn't leave her Aunt Sophie. Now, she has the chance to yet doesn't make that step.
Alistair has always been a world traveler helping those in need with his surgical/medical knowledge. That is until he becomes very ill with the measles and lands himself in Fool's Gold. This is when he meets Paige and she changes his life forever.
This quick short was fun and just what the Fool's Gold stories are about. I thought their first meeting was funny, but even funnier was Alister thinking that Paige was an angel. The town dropping by with all sorts of food had me laughing. The frank man to man talk between Alister and Simon was something I didn't expect, but thought it was great. The ending was perfect as it fit them both.
This is another cute story with a very interesting beginning. The hero has measles after all or at least the traces of it. I wish this was a longer story. I would have loved to read more.
Author: Susan Mallery First published: May 2012 Length: 7 chapters Setting: Contemporary. Smalltown (Fool's Gold). Sex: Closed Door. Once. Hero: Surgeon Heroine: Ditzy Jane of All Trades
A short little novella and my first visit to Fool's Gold. Sweet characters and a light touch. Sex is behind closed doors. A rapid move to HEA.
Nice and easy. The sort of story you'd find in a women's mag.
2.5 stars, rounded up. It's a nice example.

(Realistic rating: 4.5 or so for sure! Rounding down just because it's not a fave-fave, not because I feel it's lacking anything in particular.)
A novella that doesn't end in marriage?! Be still, my heart!! Coupled with fun characters, realistic reasons for connection between them, and a solid story arc, and you've got my favorite short from Fool's Gold thus far. (I'm pretty sure Sweeter With You was my favorite when I first read it, so we'll see how it holds up against this!) Paige is adorable, Alistair is fantastic, the Simon and Montana cameos were lovely, and I just... again, cannot stress how great it is that this just ends in a sweet declaration of love and commitment for the future rather than rushing to marriage. There's next to no dumb conflict, just two good people supporting one another, and it's just very soft and warm and happy. Very, very good.
I didn't have many expectations for this novella since we haven't been introduced to these characters in any previous books. But within a couple of pages, I was hooked and loving both of them. Paige is a friend of Heidi and Montana and a long-time resident of Fool's Gold. When Simon's friend arrives for a visit while Montana is pregnant (and turns out to have measles), Paige offers to look after him during his illness. And, of course, the town comes through with casseroles and other help. As he recovers, they get to know each other. Sure, their relationship develops very quickly, but it's sweet and seems like a good fit, so it makes sense. I liked the characters and the story. It was just over too quickly.
Why I picked it up: Still reading through the Fool’s Gold series.
How I read it: On Kindle.
What it’s about: Alister, Simon’s friend, comes to town for a visit but needs a place to stay because he’s got the measles. Paige takes him in, no questions asked, to keep her pregnant friend healthy. He travels the world, and she wants to, but has never had the courage.
What I liked: Paige gets to travel, see the world, and also be in love.
What I disliked: I want a story of them going on their adventures. I hope we get that in future stories of the series.
Genre: Small town, travel, closed door.
Rating & Recommendation: ⭐️⭐️⭐️ and only as part of the series.
This novella (2 discs) tells the story of Paige McLean and Dr. Alistair Woodbury. Paige was raised in Fool's Gold by her former nun aunt who's just passed, and Alistair is a British surgeon who travels the world providing his services. Dr. Simon Bradley is Alistair's good friend, so he's come to Fool's Gold to visit, only to come down with the measles as he arrives. With Montana Hendrix Bradley seven months pregnant, he can't stay with them, so he stays with Montana's friend, Paige instead. As she nurses him through the measles, Alistair comes to think of his as his angel, and in just a very short time (and book) they fall in love and start their HEA.
This tweener story in the Fool's Gold series is complete, as far a it goes as a short story/novella. There are a couple other characters from the series from both before and after this chronologically, but the story can stand alone.
The story is too short. They meet when he is about to collapse with measles. She takes care of him. They both stew about each other internally. You can guess how it ends.
Paige is every bit the angel he names her. He doesn't exhibit any outstanding characteristics.
Mature themes: some intimate kissing and fondling which leads to undescribed sex.
This is a short story that could have been so very good long story. Paige had delayed her dream of traveling because she was afraid of the first step. Trying to help her friends, she took in Alistair when he arrived from Europe with the measles. He could not stay with his friends because Montana was pregnant so Paige took him in and nursed him back to health. Because this is a short story, their relationship grew very fast but at least she fulfilled her dream of traveling.
Just a sweet little “novella” or short story set in Fools Gold where so,e other books of Mallory’s have been set.
Unexpectedly, Paige helps her friends when an attractive British friend of theirs shows up infected with measles. Turns out he is a British Lord who is also a traveling doctor, similar to Doctors Without Borders, who wanted to visit his friend, Simon ( also a doctor). Since Simon’s wife is pregnant, Alistair cannot stay with his friend so Paige offers to let him stay with her while he recuperates. Of course, friendship:then romance is muses making for a fun quick little read.
