As soon as I finished reading Golden Blood, which is the first book in the Time Spirit Trilogy, I HAD to contact the author and let her know how MUCH I loved it! Melissa Pearl was kind enough to give me the second and third book to read and review, and let me tell you, I had my own squealing moment for that. When I finally had the chance to read Black Blood, I just could NOT put it down! I am always scared of sequels not living up to the awesomeness of the first book, but boy, was it as addicting and exciting as Golden Blood. Black Blood gave you some answers while at the same time uncovering more secrets and doubts that keep you reading more and forgetting that you actually have a life outside this fictional world!
To start off, You get to find out more about the mysterious man at the end of Golden Blood and I was SO happy with that development! I liked that a new character that was introduced basically tipped Gemma's world 180 degrees and basically gave her the push she needed to finally think for herself. You don't get to see a lot of Harrison in this book and while this might have frustrated me, Melissa Pearl was able to keep me excited and addicted even without such an important character in the story. I loved the build up of the story, sometimes books lose sight of what is important in a book and just have many subplots without a major one.
As for the characters, I really did get frustrated with Gemma at the beginning but only because I'm the reader and we all know that readers are the Know-It-Alls (in fiction, not sure about real life) but I had to keep on reminding myself that if it was my parents I would have been as stubborn, if not worse than her. Harrison was a bit mushy mushy to my taste at the beginning but I guess that's how young love is right? as for Gabe, I have to admit that HE was my favorite character in Black Blood. He takes up some of the comic relief from Gemma's twin siblings Dom and Ruby because they don't appear as much in this book. Overall Black Blood was a great sequel that did not disappoint! I would recommend to any fans of time traveling to seriously pick this up! also for all readers because this has a bit of everything, contemporary lovers, this is a good one!

Wowza. I finished this book in about 5 hours. In that time, I ignored phone calls, my bladder and the rest of the world. I loved it. 5 stars from this little black duck. If you havent read this series, go and get the first book Golden Blood!

This installment had Gemma dealing with a whole lot of issues, the main one being re-establishing her soul mate Harrison's existence after her parents did the dirty during a time trip. I just knew they were baddies! I loved going on this adventure with Gemma and her determination endeared her to me even more.

We met a wonderful, wonderful character in Gabe and my heart sang for him in each scene. His honesty and raw emotion was so beautiful to be part of. I am hoping for many things for him in the next book.

Gemma and Harrison have got a tough road ahead but I am confident that Gemma's new found indepence and rebellion will serve her well. I am super excited to be going straight on to the final book Pure Blood and can not wait to see what the installment holds - thank goodness it's already published!!!

The 2nd book in the Time Spirit Trilogy, Black Blood, is nothing short of spectacular. Melissa Pearl has out done herself again in this YA adventure. Picking up her theme from Golden Blood she quickly settles you back into the plot as it thickens. Answering the previous cliff hanger she throws you in neck deep with new drama.

Gemma needs to be even stronger then before to fight for the things she desires. The mystery man Gabe has his own shocking revelation and Gemma’s parents find new ways to throw a wrench into her love life. The story is fresh and riveting but leaves you desiring more.

Part 3 in the trilogy Pure Blood is going to be a must read.

After reading Golden Blood, I bought this book immediately. And I fell in love with it even more than the first (if that was physically possible?). Melissa Pearl is an incredibly story teller who has created such a deep, intense story about Gemma and Harrison and their worrying predicament. Its about love, betrayal and family with such a magical fantasy element that it'll blow you away. I absolutely loved this sequel and as soon as I'd finished it, I immediately bought the third!

Like most reviewers, I've found sequels to be the hardest books to review. It's difficult to explain why someone should read the second book in a series (or third), if they haven't read book one (especially when I may be giving aspects of book one away). And it's hard to say what I enjoyed about it, if the reader hasn't checked out the predecessor. Therefore, as I say with each of my sequel reviews read book one, Golden Blood, before reading this review or book.

And note, I HIGHLY recommend this series!!

At the end of Golden Blood Gemma was approached by a stranger, Gabe; and in Black Blood we learn just who he is and want he wants. And, truthfully I was taken by surprise with the change in events. But, so excited for the twist in plot (which Melissa does beautifully). With Gabe's confessions comes a whirlwind of drama for Gemma and her instinct is, like most, to not believe him. But, when her world is shattered he's the only one she knows to turn to.

Gemma is strong and capable, and an amazing female lead. I absolutely adore her, and the way she stands up for herself and goes after what she wants. In Black Blood Gemma and Harrison have the chance to let their relationship grow, but they are still bound by Gemma's parents' strict rules. Rules that, understandably, seem barbaric to the young couple. I began to really not like her parents in this book, for reasons that become obvious to any reader.

When Penelope and Alistair alter the life of their daughter and attempt to prove once and for all that they have the most control in their family I cried, really cried, in utter disbelief. Their lack of love and compassion is heartbreaking. But, Gemma does everything in her power to fight back, and finally seeks out Gabe. The relationship they create is fun to watch grow.

Once again Melissa has dazzled me with her ability to create and mold this world that her characters live in using only words, and make it feel so real. I became lost in her writing, their emotions became my emotions, and with each book this story gets better and better. The build up to book 3 is phenomenal and I know others, like myself, will not stop at book 1. The adventure that began in Golden Blood continues to burn bright throughout this second installment and this is one series I have to see through to the end.

Black Blood definitely doesn't suffer from second book syndrome, in fact, I may be so bold as to say I enjoyed it more than the first, but I did love the first. If you've read Golden Blood you must continue with the story, it's one of the best!

I would like to begin the review of this excellent book by advising those who have not read Golden Blood, the first in the trilogy, to go back and read that before you read Black Blood. Gemma Heart is trying to enjoy the summer with her boyfriend Harrison Granger, before her senior year. But memories of the strange man on the beach and his warnings haunt and frighten her. Her parents, still not happy with her choice of boyfriend, are also not exactly making things easy for them.

The discovery of who exactly Gabe the mysterious man is, throws Gemma into a turmoil bringing into question who she truly is and who her true family is. More questions arise when her father starts acting secretively and going on missions into the past to retrieve the arrow head necklaces of the electus. And why are these expeditions making Gemma so tired?

The final straw comes when Gemma is forced to go back with her family to change history; thus not only ruining Gemma's dreams, but also altering the lives of countless others.

This brilliantly told story deals with horrific betrayal and extreme selfishness. On the other hand it also shows that true love can survive gruelling tests and frightful disagreements. The characters with their very realistic personalities crept even deeper into my heart during this book. The anxiety and suspense in the story are countered by the tender love scenes between Gemma and Harrison.

The author's habit of stating the time and place of each event helped me understand exactly where I was in the story. All this makes Black Blood a comfortably paced and yet enthralling read. I would recommend this book to young adults and adults alike. After reading this book which is more than deserving of its 5 stars, I can't wait to read the next book and hopefully many more by Melissa Pearl. (Ellen Fritz)

I got to the bottom of page 229 and read the final three words...To Be Continued...
I threw my head back and screamed a silent NOOOOOOOOOOO!!

Its 12.20am, my husband is snoring beside me and my girls have been asleep for hours.
Me, well I've been unavailable for the last 5 hours.

I've had my head firmly and completely stuck in Black Blood and loved every second of it.

Melissa Pearl has written a story that has utterly enraptured me.

I love her characters. There is just something about the way they speak to me that grabs me by the heart strings and pulls a coy smile from my lips.
Harrison and Gemma are without a doubt the most lovable and endearing teenage couple you can imagine.

Do teenage boys like Harrison truly exist, I sincerely hope they do and that my own daughters can capture the hearts of one for themselves someday!

But Black Blood is more than just a love story.
It is a story of mystery and intrigue, of love, loss and betrayal.
Oh my gosh, the betrayal!

The mysterious Gabe offers Gemma a glimpse into something too plausible to ignore, but is she ready to face the truth. Could the people she loves most in the world be the monsters Gabe says they are?
Gemma finds her life and all that she has known to be true unravelling around her and without her rock of support for guidance she flounders.
Can she be all that Gabe says she can and rescue Harrison from never existing at all?!

Black Blood kept me on the edge of my seat and up half the night.
It is a one sitting read kind of book!

Another 5 Star read from one of my new favourite authors ~<;]

{my thoughts} - This book picked up a month or so after the last had left off. Gemma and Harrison’s love is ultimately tested in some of the worst possible ways. Gemma meets with Gabe the man that gave her the burner phone in the end of the last book. He says a lot of things that hurt her and make her question her entire existence.

Gemma’s parents make it clear that she can date Harrison while she is in high school but once she graduates it needs to end. Gemma and Harrison’s know this and hope to sway her parents into changing their minds when that time comes. However, Gemma takes it upon herself to make it clear to her parents that she will not obey by their rules. Gemma’s parents then take it upon themselves to end the relationship in the most unexpected way possible.

Gemma is left horribly heartbroken and lost. She eventually turns to Gabe and they discover a way to repair the damage her parents had caused. In the end their relationship is threatened again in a surprising and u expected turn of events. I can tell wait to find out how this series concludes.

{reason for reading} – I was given a copy of this book from the author in return for an honest review.

Melissa Pearl has done it again with Black Blood, book #2 in the Time Spirit Trilogy. I HIGHLY recommend if you have yet to read Golden Blood, book #1 in the Time Spirit Trilogy that you do. Melissa Pearl did not disappoint readers with her writing. In Black Blood you learn about Gabe, the mysterious man from the beach. Gemma and Harrison must decide to trust Gabe or not once they hear his story. When Gemma and her family travel to he past she thinks it's a routine jump through time. How far will Gemma's parents go to protect their interest? What are her parents willing to do in the name of love to protect her? It's too late by the time Gemma finds out not only are they changing the future, but it will have a direct effect on Gemma and Harrison. Now Gemma must trust Gabe even if she doesn't believe his story. Black Blood will keep readers on the edge of their seats as they read and begging for more when it's over.

When you find a great indie author, it's like discovering buried treasure or a new world. And a new world is exactly what Melissa Pearl delivers in her Time Spirit Trilogy series. Amazingly, the second book in this contemporary YA series is even better than the first; and the first was awesome. Again, Gemma is a wonderfully strong but vulnerable heroine. She has the rare ability to travel through time but is being manipulated by a very nasty set of parents who do their best to separate her from Harrison, her other half. It takes every ounce of courage and strength for Gemma to keep him in her life. Of course, Harrison is definitely worth the effort. He's clearly a ten on the yum-boyfriend-scale.

Black Blood is so expertly plotted that I couldn't wait to see what happened next and couldn't put the book down. Melissa Pearl is not only a great writer, she's a great storyteller and this is a story that must not be missed. I can't wait to read the third book, Pure Blood.

Page Turner... Very Engaging

I was so thankful that I don't read the summary of this book (which in general, I really don't... I want the "surprise me" feeling...) because in this case the story shocks me.... especially the part where Harrison appears to have not existed because of what her parents did in one of their trips... My mind actually shout out NOOOOOO!!!!

Although this is my first time-travel novel, I find the story well written and full of suspense.. I just hope that the synopsis of this novel isn't that elaborated so that there is a shocking revelation to it.. I think it's better that way... (just a suggestion)

This is the only book that I really want the heroine to shout at her parents and tell them to really "back off" because what they've done really pisses me off....

Didn't think it could happen but this book was even better then the first! I loved the father/daughter relationship and of course our kick ass hero was back for more laughs and yes even some swooning : ) To be honest I'm a little bit sad that I only have the last book to read and then it's over : ( but this is just the kind of book I will definately be re-reading over and over.

Another great book in the trilogy.

The Blurb:

Gemma's parents have put enough rules around her relationship with Harrison that she feels like she's living on parole. But she wins one battle—a summer job working for Harrison's step-father. It is the perfect chance to spend the steamy, hot Florida days with her boyfriend. It's also a great distraction from the cellphone hiding in her underwear drawer—her only contact with Gabe, the mystery man who's stalking her.

When she confronts Gabe, he tells her that her parents are not who she thinks they are, and Harrison has the gall to believe him. Surrounded by conflict, Gemma doesn't know what to believe, and it takes a trip back in time for her to glimpse the sickening truth.

Thanks to her parents, she returns to the present to find the love of her life no longer exists. His family line was broken and now, so is she.

This betrayal forces her to seek out Gabe. Setting aside her fear of the truth, she must trust this man and learn what he can teach her... otherwise, she'll never get her boyfriend back.

So this book reminded me a little of Back to The Future Part III. Harrison is missing for most of the book, erased from history by Gemma's parents. I loved how evil they became in this book – Gemma said there was nothing they could do to stop her seeing Harrison, she was wrong!

In this second book of the trilogy Gemma learns more about her family and the mysterious Gabe. She also learns more about her time-travelling abilities but this is very much a "middle" book in the trilogy setting things up for the grand finale.

There are the same small spelling issues in this book – in fact some of the ones I quoted for book 1 may have been from book 2 – but they are few in number (less than five) and don't spoilt the overall enjoyment of the book.

I rarely fly right out and buy sequels unless I loved the first book. But GOLDEN BLOOD's premise was stellar. I had to know what happened and I cared about Gemma Hart, the main character. Her love of Harrison and his for her really spoke to me. BLACK BLOOD is Melissa Pearl's second book in the Time Spirits trilogy.

Gemma Hart belongs to the Harts, a family of time travelers. They gallop through time setting things right. The Harts have provided a stable, loving home and a fairly normal (for time travelers) upbringing for all three of their beloved children.

Or so Gemma thought.

Actually the strange man who has been dogging Gemma's every move turns out to be her birth father, Gabe. He knows some pretty disturbing things about the Harts which change everything for Gemma. Not only are they not the upstanding, altruistic people she thought they were, but they are bent on using her for something that will change the whole face of history. She refuses to believe Gabe and Harrison until her own 'parents' prove their falsehood.

The Harts prove they're not out for Gemma's best interests. Because Harrison threatens to upset their plans, they take measures into their own hands, ruining Gemma's existence. It's the last brick in the wall.

Now Gemma must work with Gabe to develop her skills so that she can fix the whole rip in time they've caused. I wish there had been more evidences of damage--that whole Butterfly Effect. But other than that it was a fast-paced, interesting ride.

This is the second book in the Time Spirit series, and it follows close on the heels of the first. Gemma's parents are hell bent on taking away the one thing she loves - her boyfriend, Harrison - and they go to the greatest lengths to do so by erasing him from history.

Little do they know that doing so will only drive her closer to the Gabe, the mysterious man we were introduced to at the end of the first book, Golden Blood.

Once again Melissa Pearl crafts a really quick paced, easy read. This book will appeal to anyone who enjoys a good paranormal YA. If you have checked out the first book then you definitely need to read this one.

Gemma suffers the ultimate betrayal, and learns that large chunks of her life are based on lies. As she struggles to deal with this, and the loss of Harrison, she is forced to break away from her parents and forge her own path.

I really admire Gemma, she is one hell of a strong character and the times when she could easily have been broken, she dug deep and found a way forward. The love she has for Harrison really shines through in this novel, as does her determination to set things right.

This is a solid second book, and leads really nicely into the final book of the series. I have recently read that as well, and will be posting a review next week.

Betrayal by those you love is something that hurts the most. That is what Gemma experiences when her parents intervene in something close to Gemma, because they have her best interests at heart. What Gemma doesn’t realise is that it is all for their own gain. They want their daughter to be solely focussed of them, and their needs of her.

I just love the way that Gemma and Gabe’s relationship forms. There are snippets in there that can be confusing to Gemma, but that are so sentimental to Gabe. You, as the reader, wonder what on earth he has been doing all of her life… Yes, Harrison is trusting of him, and that seriously upsets Gemma, but without that trust, she never would have had the guts to go against her own family code and trust a stranger.

Melissa Pearl has done an amazing job with the second book of the Time Spirit Trilogy. Personally, I feel that this book is even better than the first, but without the first, the story would be incomplete. (Don’t get me wrong – I really LOVED the first book as well!) I can’t wait to read the final instalment! I simply have to know what on earth is going on with certain character motivations.

The second book in Melissa Pearl's trilogy doesn't disappoint as we follow Gemma and Harrison on their journey.

A surprising twist brings the reader to the edge of their seat and hearts to the throat...well, my reaction anyway, as Gemma continues her struggle against her family to keep her relationship with Harrison.

Pearl continues to build her story to a wonderful crescendo, leaving the end hanging so the reader is compelled to go straight out and buy part 3...which is what I'll be doing as soon as I'm finished here...just kidding, it's already safely tucked onto my Kobo for tomorrow's lunchtime reading :)

Although I have to say I guessed one of the little plot twists at the beginning of part 1, it has only added to the reader interest and I'm keen to see how the conclusion pans out now that the cat is (almost) out of the bag...

I feel I've stumbled onto a winner with Melissa Pearl and I look forward to a long reader/writer relationship, way beyond her trilogy.

Book 2, like the first, GOLDEN BLOOD, leaves you with unanswered questions and wanting more.
BLACK BLOOD distracted me from day to day duties so much, I just had to sit down and finish it so I could get on with my day. It was addictive and I just had to know what was going to happen.

I love Pearl's version of time travel, it's very believable and haven't come across any holes yet. I love the way she leaks information slowly, keeping the tension throughout the story and the very believable emotions of the characters.

This story was mostly about Gemma and Gabe. I enjoyed getting to know him through Gemma's eyes and he has become my favourite character. Book 3 is sitting on my husbands ipad right now, taunting me to read it... I don't really have to do housework do I?

As another reader wrote, rarely does a sequel measure up to its predecessor, but this one does!

A fast and easy read, Black Blood sucked me in from the very beginning, refusing to turn me loose until I had finished the entire thing. Melissa writes in such a way that the reader is pulled right into the story line, running alongside the characters as though involved in the action. We feel their heartbreak and elation as though it is our own emotions.

My daughter got to this one before me and waited impatiently for me to finish so we could talk openly about the plot line. We both loved these two stories immensely and are eagerly waiting for the final book to come out in Feb.

Is it time yet???

Great book! I enjoyed it more than the first, probably because there wasn't a lot of recapping what happened in the first book, and there was more going on. I really felt for the characters and really enjoyed the writing style. I also like the fact that the main character isn't a helpless female unlike so many other books these days. She holds her own and I can't wait to see her kick some butt in the next book!

Rarely does a sequel live up to the first book in a series. But Ms. Pearl has done an amazing thing—given us a sequel that’s even better than the first book. The characters are engaging, and the plot tight and satisfying. The only disappointment I had was reading the last page and knowing I had to wait until spring to find out what happens to Harrison and Gemma next. I highly recommend this new addition to the Time Spirit trilogy.

I had CPR class today but I kept sneaking in some reading whenever I could because I couldn't put it down. Things are happening in this book and by the time you get to the end, you are a nervous wreck! I feel for Gemma and Harrison and Gabe and I don't want any of them hurt! Their pain was my pain! I did have to take an hour off to make dinner and settle my nerves before I could do anything else!

It's a good thing I have the next book handy!
