Julia Phillips’ world is an alternate universe away.
Trapped in a land where government leaders want her dead, Julia is forced to run for her life with Evan and Reece, the two boys who brought her here. They’re on their own in a hostile landscape ruled by scavengers and thieves.
But Evan is battling a deadly infection, and Julia finds herself racing against time as she tries to find the medicine that will save his life. She and Reece find an unlikely ally—Jo, a girl they free after finding her captured in a bandits’ hideout.
As the four travel across the country, Julia has something else to worry about—her memories are slowly being replaced by the Julia of Evan and Reece’s world. Will they find a way to send Julia home before it’s too late? Or will Julia’s body and mind be trapped THERE?
Denise Grover Swank is such an awesome author. I love every single thing she has written. Including this book. I wish I hadn't waited so long between when I read the first book in this series. I had a little bit of trouble getting back up to speed. Maybe eventually I will re-read the first one. But "There" did a pretty good job of filling in the blanks in my brain during the first chapter or two. In the first book Evan had a device that enabled him to travel to an alternate dimension where he can see his beloved Julia again since she had been killed in an auto accident in his dimension. He and his friend Reece bring Julia to their world but Evan's Father along with the other members of the United Region want her dead. They try to send Julia back to her own world but she wants to stay with Evan. So Evan, Reece, and Julia escape, and head across country looking for the rebels and Reece's Mom. Eventually Evan hopes to be able to send Julia back to her own dimension but in the mean time, they just have to try to survive long enough to find the Rebels. Along the way they find Jo and save her from her kidnappers and so she joins their group. Julia loves Evan but the other Julia of their world had loved Reece. And, the other Julia's memories and emotions are starting to take over her own memories. This book is full of romance and plenty of heart stopping suspenseful moments. They suffer injuries, encounter scavengers, and plenty of other obstacles.
Congratulations to Denise Grover Swank for the recent news that she was able to sell this series to be made into a movie. If you haven't read this series, I highly recommend it.
Totally different than, but as intriguing and brilliantly imagined as HERE. The inside of this book is as gorgeous as the cover, with characters and a world in turmoil, and the question of how far love can actually take you smack dab in the middle. There's nothing else out there in YA like these two books, so if you're looking for something different and wonderful, I highly recommend these.
There are only two books in this story and I really think the second book was better. I am not sure if it was because I understood how the portal worked and who the characters were by book two - but this second book was just great. I read through it pretty quick because I was so worried for Julia and what was happening. Was the secret government going to kill Julia? Would Julia make it back to her world? Would Julia be able to save Even before it is too late? It was cleverly written and the characters are simply the best - well developed, believable. Reese, Evan, and a new sidekick, Jo really make the story interesting.
2.5 stars (Source: I own a copy of this book.) This is book 2 in the ‘On the Otherside’ series, and kicks off where book 1 left off. Julia, Evan and Reece are on the run, minus the black box, and with little idea of what to do. Julia keeps experiencing the other Julia’s memories, and they rescue a kidnapped girl called Jo to try and help them get where they’re going. Can Julia ever go home? With the other Julia take her over? And which boy will she pick?
I really enjoyed the first book in the series, but this one was a massive let down.
The characters in this second book just annoyed me. Julia annoyed me with her suddenly having the other Julia’s memories, and continuing to string both boys along. I also found her to be a little callous at times, and she generally just irritated me.
Evan was all self-sacrificing again, and this drove me nuts. He was constantly all ‘I’ll die if it means keeping you safe’, and it just got old.
Reece was like a different person to who he’d been in the first book, but at least he seemed relatively normal. Towards the end though, I got fed up with him too.
We also had the new character of Jo, who I just didn’t trust at all, I was constantly thinking that she was about to turn on them.
The storyline was a bit pants to be honest. There were so many moments that were just really unbelievable, and there were things that happened that went against the things we had been told in the first book, that it got really irritating.
It was like the author had forgotten what she had told us in the first book, especially with regards to the dimension jumping, and had just written an easy solution, rather than sticking with how difficult things should have been. The romance was also annoying because Julia continued to string along both boys, and when what she was doing was questioned, came out with the time old excuse of ‘it wasn’t me.’.
The ending of this was also pretty poor. After a few more ‘as if’ moments, we had a bit of a bizarre ending, and I wasn’t impressed at all. I don’t know what the author was thinking, but I just felt really disappointed by the whole thing. Overall; a big disappointment after book 1. 5 out of 10.
(Spoiler Alert: If you haven't read the first book in the series, there will be some spoilers here because it's impossible to talk about the plot without giving some things away.)
I liked the first book quite a bit, but this one was even better. Although I'm not generally a fan of love triangles, this one was written in such an original way that it actually made sense. The Julia of this world is in love with Evan, but as the memories of the Julia of the other world continue to invade her consciousness, she finds herself drawn more and more to Reece, the boy the other Julia loved until the day she died. On the run for their lives, looking for Reece's mom and trying to find a way to send Julia back home, the love triangle is the least of their worries. More concerning is Julia's precarious hold on reality and battle to stay sane. When they decide on a whim to take along a girl they found bound and alone, they hope they've made the right decision. Jo is a survivor, living outside the limits of the town Evan and Reece call home, and no one is certain where her loyalties lie.
This book is fast paced and action packed. As we follow the group toward their destination, obstacle after obstacle get thrown in their path, testing them physically, mentally and emotionally, tugging at their precarious bonds of trust. Every time I thought I had a character figured out, something happened to make me question my assessment. I really enjoyed the way the author allowed Evan and Reece to struggle with their emotions for Julia, wanting to hold on to the girl they had lost, but coming to accept and love the girl that was in front of them. I wasn't always certain that either truly let go of their old Julia, but it was obvious how hard they were trying.
The ending was shocking, and the alternate ending the author offers a glimpse into a "sliding door" reality, emphasizing how one decision can change the course of our lives.
Rating: A Good Read
This book held my attention and kept me up late. I've never read anything from Denise Grover Swank except for the two books in this series, but I will certainly be fixing that oversight soon. A really good read.
When I read Here, the first book in the series, I fell in love – with the characters and the storyline, it was a book I never wanted to end. When I started reading There I was hesitant, surely it couldn’t be as good but I’m so glad I was proven wrong – it was so much better.
The epilogue made the book for me. You don’t often get an ending that finishes it off nicely but still leaves you wanting so much more. This series could easily go on forever and I would never get tired of it.
An excellent read that is incredibly well written. The story takes you on a roller-coaster with some serious twists and turns to keep you on the edge of your seat. Completely addictive, I couldn’t put this book down.
I received an ARC from the author in exchange for an honest review.
I really liked Here, so i was looking forward to reading There. Unfortunately, i was really disappointed. There was really slow. Through the majority of it, i was really really bored.
I found some of the storyline quite predictable, and i didn't like where it was going, either.
The characters annoyed me in this one, which only made it more dull.
Overall, the story was dull, and i really wish i finished at book one.
2.5 stars — Well. I was right in my original review of the first book, that love triangle did not work for me. There was a bit of an explanation for it, but it went on too long, and really didn’t make anyone but Evan and Jo likeable in that situation.
So yeah. I have to admit I’m kind of disappointed. I still don’t really like any of the characters. Evan got better in this one, definitely. Became more dimensional, and I actually kind of believed in his feelings for this Julia. I basically never liked Reece, and felt like he was volatile, a bit of a bully, and just not someone remotely swoonworthy. And while I know I’m supposed to be team one or the other, the truth is that while I like Evan more, I think he deserved better than Julia. Why did she love him? Because he made her feel safe? That’s not enough. That’s seriously selfish.
Julia was a great big mixed bag. She would have some good moments where she showed her empathy and humanity, but something felt meh about it…like it was the bare minimum, but compared to people in a world that have lost all of their empathy, it looked amazing. *shrugs* I don’t know, she just really rubbed me the wrong way.
The one bright spot was the introduction of Jo. I loved seeing the friendship develop with Julia, though even there I felt like I wanted more. It’s because the author decided we had to keep being suspicious of her, so it wasn’t as fulfilling as it could have been.
I feel like there were quite a few potential plot threads and mysteries that just got completely dropped. Maybe Ms. Swank had a different vision for this series initially, and changed her mind, but it was kind of annoying for me. Like Reece in the first book calling her Newbie? And in this book his Mom harps on Julia about “is she sure he didn’t cross over?” What about Deacon, and the radiation thing in KC? What about the fact that they can make more boxes? What even was the point of the Rebels or the UR? What was their goal? What was Reece’s Mom’s motivations? Basically it was a shallow world, with shallow villains for me. Not to mention Monica ended up being a nothing character.
Sorry. I’m PMSing, and so I’m crankier than usual. It wasn’t horrible, but I could just see all these things that could have been better, and they just weren’t…and apparently that bothers me. *rolls eyes*
This book picks up right where “Here” left off. Thankfully you don’t feel like you missed tons of time or thing happening where the author needs to help you catch up. I was in suspense from the start of the book and hanging on the edge of my seat throughout. I wished I could read faster to find out what happened in the end. But the ride was a wild rollercoaster of emotions, suspense being the main one. This book has no predictability, it is amazingly put together without giving away what would happen. Just an awesome read for not just Young Adults but Adults as well.
There, the follow-up to Here, is a fantastic continuation of the "On the Otherside" series! It basically picks up where Here left off and turns into an action packed journey across what remains of the former USA. What truly makes it interesting is learning that, in spite of the radiation risk, people still live in the nuclear ravaged world outside of the sterile and military guarded "other" Springfield. There's civilization out there that the UR would rather you do not know about. That's where this book takes off. The trio must struggle to stay alive while on their quest.
I find it interesting that, in yet another of Denise's series, the parental figures aren't the fully supportive and loving type. In one universe they're distant, in the other they're self-serving. The introduction of Jo, a scavenger, mixes up the trio of Julia, Evan, and Reece in just the right way. This book also strongly enforced my adoration of Evan... he's a bit crazed, protective, and overwhelmingly loving. He crossed universes to find the girl he loves... I just love him! The friendship between Evan and Reece is very believable. You can tell they've known each other a long time, in spite of butting heads as often as they do (and that's what friends do... you give each other crap and carry on!)
Once again, the ending of this installment gave me a heavy "Fringe" feeling and I just LOVED it. Finally, the epilogue: I got entirely too excited over this epilogue. I wasn't expecting it, and I love the possibilities presented. Knowing that Denise will be releasing a third installment of the "On the Otherside" series makes me even more excited for what's to come. I give this book a solid FIVE stars.
Julia is stuck in an alternate universe and on the run from the UR. Her and her two boyfriends Reece, and Evan go on a wild ride and pick up the super awesome kickass Jo. What I loved: This book was amazingly good. Swank is one of heck of a master world builder and her characters are dynamic and full of life. Jo was an amazing addition to the cast and in my mind made this book what it was. Without all of the twists and turns that her character takes thing could have gotten dull. Julia is faced with some tough decisions and circumstances and she takes them on head on. Sure she questions her ability to move on but Jo is always there to give her a good metaphorical face slap. She snaps out her self pity and keeps on going. Like a champ.
What I found 'meh': Reece and Evan. I was not drawn to either one of these two boys. I didn't hate their characters, although, Reece makes my skin crawl on several occasions. Maybe it's because I just finished reading a f/f novella that was full of awesome, but whatever the case Jo and Julia's friendship and it's ups and downs were center stage in terms of the relationship I was rooting for. This line killed me SOMEBODY GET ME A DAMN TISSUE!!!!
There was nothing that I didn't really like about the book. Maybe the length. It is a longish seeming book. But is that really a bad thing? HELL NO!!!
Overall this sequel is awesome. I am unsure if this is a continuing series or not. The ending is an open ended closing. Either way. I am a DGS fan 4L.
What a ride! This was such an incredible journey for me. Denise has opened my eyes to a new genre of writing. Truly captivated by this story of hope, love, desperation, and survival. Here was the first book I read by Denise and although it was out of my reading comfort zone, I dove into it and spent an entire night on edge of compustion to finish. I was broken at the end knowing what a horrible and tragic wait it would be for the rest of the story to be released but my goodness this woman delivered a tale worth waiting for! Brilliant. Simply brilliant. Such creative and unique characters you cannot help but fall hopelessly in love with. The strong and beautiful Julia who tugs at your heart strings with every word and action of her being. I felt so close to her that all I wanted to do was jump into the story and help! Evan who is gorgeous and heroic, completely infatuated with the love of his life and more than determined to save her no matter the risk. Spunky, unpredictable Jo who adds fire to the plot with her mouth and her growing loyalty. Then there's Reece who makes your heart shatter and betray your need for a Julia/Evan happy ending. The pain and love and loss he feels seaps into your soul and simply melts your heart. This is a MUST read, after Here of course. Thank you Denise for a riveting and beautifully written story. It's 4:30 am and I am sure my mind will race well into the early morning!
've been patiently waiting for the sequel to Here. Its no surprise that I read it within a day! Denise can write action, comedy, and paranormal! Does not disappoint!
Wonderfully written!!!! There, was a great addition to the On the Otherside Series. This young adult book, is great for readers of any age.
The story continues to follow Julia while she is still on the otherside, trying to escape the craziness and get back home. While trying to get away Julia, Reece, and Evan face many dangers such as the radiation and scavengers who don't care about anyone else other than themselves. As the three of them make their trip in search of Reece's mom, Evan gets a deadly infection and they need to get him help before it's too late. Julia is also having trouble mixing her memories with the alternate Julia's memories, causing her (as well as Evan and Reece) heartache in the process.
So many questions are answered throughout this book, but still leaving a possibility of another book. I hope that in due time, Denise will continue working her magic. I also think it was a great idea to have two alternate endings. I think that somewhat appeased my mind, in that I got the best of both worlds.
While I enjoyed the first book in the series, the second was even better. The plot was in no way perdictible and kept me guessing all the way to the very last page. Just when I thought I had something or someone figured out, BOOM, Denise threw a curve ball! This is a great pick for a young adult book choice and in my late teens or early twenties, it would have definitely been one of my top favorite reads. Even now in my mid thirties, I still enjoyed it and I think that says a lot about the author's ability to create a well written plot with complex characters.
There did not disappoint. Just like Here, I could not put There down! There were so many wonderful twists, turns, and growth of each character throughout the book. I love these characters so much. Denise Grover Swank has a way of writing characters that make them feel real and when I finished this book I felt a void. I was not ready for Julie, Evan, Reece, and Jo’s stories to be over. I want to know how each of them deal with all the changes brought from the book ending. I loved the infinite possibilities ending that was included with the epilogue. It added more thought form my imagination.
This is such a great series! I feel like the author could have definitely put both Here and There together as one book and sold it for a higher price but either way, that doesn’t affect the quality of the book at all. It was a fantastic book and although it was a sequel to Here, it was very new and unexpected. I was pleasantly surprised for most of the book and I’m not one who is easily surprised by book or movie plots. The story was very creative and I hated when the book ended. I would love to read another sequel, especially after the ending!
I was so excited to read this after reading Here. I couldn't put it down. There was so much packed into this book. Love, laughter, heartbreak, and danger. I loved these characters who do everything they can to save each other and never give up. I was afraid I wouldn't like the ending. A great story can be ruined by the ending. But I kind of loved the ending to this book even though I hate that it had to end. This series will definitely be one I re-read to visit the characters again.
After reading the first book in this series, I was eager to read this second installment. I liked reading the experiences the characters went through. The experiences that Julia, Evan and Reece encountered kept me turning the pages as fast as I could read in order to find out what happened next. I was a little thrown off by the ending, but enjoyed the book nonetheless. I enjoy Denise Grover Swank's thoughtful writing.
Such a great ending even though it seems like the beginning. I did not see this ending coming and it felt so good to know I was kept on my toes the whole read. This a definite read for any YA who likes sci-fi and the unknown. I was sad to see the story end wishing I had more to look forward to. I would love to have a follow-up to know how things turned out for Evan, Reece, and Jo.
I loved this continuation of the story from Here. I needed to figure out how they all dealt with their issues at the end of Here. There answers some questions, but the epilogue was my favorite. Some questions are still left unanswered, because the the epilogue. But I really enjoyed this series. It was outside my normal books that I read.
This book was way different than the last. I'm also not sure how I feel about the ending, but I'm glad I did read it.
Julia, the main character, is interesting... I'm not sure I'd say she's the best but she is struggling with a lot and she's only 17 so I'll cut her some slack. I think the addition of Jo was great. She was fiesty and resourceful.
Loved this book! Here and There, were so easily captivating I was interested from the very beginning this book till the very end. There were so many moments I didn’t know what was going to happen and how the book would play out and every time was better then I expected. I would highly recommend both books!
I loved this sequel, although I would have made some different decisions than some of the characters. Not sure if the author needed to make the book longer, or just felt what could have been the first ending was out of character. But the book was just as good as the first, more action, interesting twists. Again, this is a YA book, but well written and enjoyable.
I really enjoyed this book!! The story just grabs you and keeps you interested and wanting to see where it’s going next. I love post apocalyptic/alternate universe type of stories and this one was really well written! It kept me guessing how it works turn out till the very end. Very good!! It’s YA which isn’t my normal but I truly loved it! Very enjoyable to read!!
This book is amazing! I literally couldn't put it down all day. This book rips your heart apart until the end. Its target audience is for young adults but its a perfect book for just about everyone. I think this book ends in a beautiful way. I highly recommend it!
I enjoyed these two books. I was on my toes the entire time reading it. Although, the ending was a little confusing, but maybe it’s because I’m blonde haha anyway, another great denise book!
A glimpse into a world that suffered a nuclear war. What an adventurous sequel to the first book HERE. I absolutely loved it. How far they all come and what they went through. I loved all the characters. Such a great story line, just want to series to continue.
Denise Grover Swank once again tells us an intriguing tale that flows well in the storytelling. I waited for the second book in this series on pins and needles. With most of her books, its too hard to put down!
