Cold Case #1

Cold Case

Rate this book
Detective Zach Ramsay wasn't unaccustomed to bigotry. He was a cop. A gay cop. However, the level of bigotry that he faced was ridiculous. When he is finally transferred to the Cold Case Unit at the Melbourne Police Precinct as a punishment, it becomes the best thing that could have ever happened to him. Zach meets his new partner Detective Ashton Knight, another gay cop who had been through the same bullshit and faced the same bigotry. Together they are teamed to solve the 1987 case of a fourteen year old girl, Selina Lewis who was murdered. The problem, no one is talking and the evidence had been lost. It is up to Detectives Zach and Ashton to work out whether that was done on purpose or accident and who their perpetrator is. Selina deserves justice and Zach wants to make a good name for himself, mostly out of spite. This is a MM Crime Romance. There are possibly scenes and language that will be triggering to some readers. Themes are suited to 18+

This is one of those delightful two for two novella/novels, or whatever it is considered. There are actually two stories being told in this volume. The first is Zack Ramsey a gay cop in a precinct in Melbourne Aust that is filled with bigots who not only know but have a lot to say about the fact that he is gay. Finally, the head of the station has him transferred to another station and the cold case union. It turns out that everybody in that is not only gay, lesbian or bi but was rejected by the same station that was giving Zack such a hard time.

When he moved to the location, regretfully because he didn't want to work cold cases, he finds the much more welcoming situation and is glad to be where he can be himself. Then however, he finds his partner, Ashton, to be extremely attractive and they find themselves struggling to keep from ending up having a relationship because Ashton did that once and got in trouble. That struggle isn't resolved till the end.

The other story is a particular case involving the discovery in 1987 of the body of Selina Lewis, a teenage. She was apparently brutalized and may have raped. There was something strange about the girls mother and father. She was rumored to have a boyfriend. But then, one of the cops that handled the case is now in prison for being a corrupt cop and the other was burned out at the time and may have made good notes on the case but lost track. Then it is topped by the parents Andrea and Mark Lewis not bugging the police about the situation.

Finding the people that actually reported the disappearance of Selina was a big help as was finding the "boy who was picking on her but then got friendly" Chris Bortenton. They managed to solve the case, and finally after almost 40 years, Selina gets a sort of justice.

I view this story and recommend it because of the mystery and the view into what some people do to children. It is good on its merits as a mystery. In addition however, it doesn't hurt that the two men who solve the case are nice guys as well as being gay.
