"Chris Landrum’s idyllic life of retirement on the South Carolina barrier island of Folly Beach just got turned upside down. After more than two decades, his ex-wife, Joan, calls to wish him a merry Christmas. He can tell she wants to tell him something more, but their conversation is cut short before he learns anything. Something’s up. A second call from Joan’s best friend delivers startling news. Joan’s husband has just been killed in an automobile accident in the Smoky Mountains of Tennessee, and Joan wants Chris to investigate. Even though it’s hundreds of miles from Chris’s peaceful beach cottage, he agrees to help. Meanwhile, Chris’s best and strangest friend, Charles, joins the working world as a bartending private detective, two jobs he stumbles and bumbles through with equal measures of incompetence. Country Cal, an aging country music singer and new bar owner, hires Charles to catch a petty thief who is stealing bourbon and cash. Heather, a psychic and Charles’s main squeeze, blames ghosts; since no one can figure out how the culprit is breaking in, she seems to be right. Unfortunately for Chris, he’s got a little more to worry about than missing booze. It looks like Joan’s husband was murdered. Now, Chris has to find the culprit before he becomes the next victim—hardly a day at the beach!"
I am several books into the series and have already fallen in love with the Folly Beach characters. Having read several, I wasn't expecting all of the twists and turns of this one. There were more than a few scenes that kept me on the edge of my seat, frantically reading to find out what happened next. This was most definitely a wonderful read.
I think this book is one of Bill's finest. I so enjoy Bill's banter with his wacky friends; makes me laugh out loud. This book shows Chris's compassion about his past, how he struggles between hurt and forgiveness while cleverly sets a trap, of course, with Charles to solve two murders and a mysterious "ghost". Love this book. Thanks Bill Noel. Read this book! You won't be disappointed.
Ghosts??? Yep, I do believe in them, but as for hauling out a case of whiskey; is a little far fetched. Now as to rearranging a room… definitely!!!
One should visit the Masonic Temple in Elizabethtown or the Hardin County Museum, that used to be the library! Yes, there are ghosts in both places, along with numerous other places! I do believe!!!
Just like cruising down the highway with pleasant scenery, there's always something old and something new with a plot twist in the least expected place. always a fun, can't wait to get back to it, read. Bringing the ex in a nice touch.
I love this series! I am currently on number 7 and will definitely read them all. They make me want to move to Folly Beach and have all these people as my friends
Bill Noel always entertains with stories of Chris Landrum and his assortment of unusual friends, who solve murder mysteries on Folly Beach. An easy, relaxing, entertaining read.
Mr Noel provides enough clues to keep you guessing without giving away the plot. Well developed characters, my favorite is "Dude", and storylines that link together are an added plus.
Found a couple of free Bill Noel's Folly Beach books, GOT HOOKED, downloaded thru book #7: Just finished Ghosts. LOVE THE FOLLY BEACH SERIES. They are a little funny, a lot nerdy, compassionate and helping each other when in need. Love the comradely between the guys, Chris is making friends left and right. Reading #7; #8 comes out next month. I didn't mention Chris and the guys solve murders, too.!!!!
I'm getting through the series too quickly. Will be sad when there are no more. As a part time resident of Folly Beach, I really enjoy being able to see myself in all these places. Wonder if Chris and Charles might drop in to Loggerheads for burger night.
