Oh, dear. Oh, dear.

This review will be littered with spoilers. Read on at your peril.

I really do love well written, soul searching dark erotica, but well written, soul searching dark erotica this surely ain’t!

This had the potential to be such a great story. A wealthy and married lady (Brook) gets carjacked, abducted and held by a gang and brutally and repeatedly raped over the course of a few days. She manages to escape but she’s in the middle of a mountain range amid heavy snowfall but, luckily, wanders right into the arms of a reclusive man (Lance) hiding away from the world in an isolated and remote cabin after the death of his wife. They’re snowed in for several months and, while she recovers, they fall in love. Sadly, it doesn’t even begin to live up to its potential.

I had so many issues with this story.

Firstly, right from the first few pages, the person responsible for the abduction is glaringly obvious.

Secondly, the gang that abducted Brook were such caricatures of villains, I expected them to start running around with black eye masks and sacks slung over their shoulders emblazoned with the word SWAG.

Thirdly, the rape is shown in brutal and graphic detail. I kid you not. So, why, when Lance and Brook finally make love is the sex just shown as a fade to grey scene? It’s OK to describe at length and in great detail an act of sexual violence but not the act of sexual love? Bizarre.

Fourthly, the dialogue is so incredibly hokey and cheesy, I wanted to escape. My OCD would not allow me not to actually finish the book but it was saccharine sweet and I wanted out!! I felt like I was skipping through a world of unicorns and fairy dust.

Photobucket

The dialogue was mawkishly sentimental

“Oh, Brook” “Oh, Lance”
“Oh, Brook” “Oh, Lance”
“Oh, Brook” “Oh, Lance”
“Oh, Brook” “Oh, Lance”
“Oh, Brook” “Oh, Lance”
“Oh, Brook” “Oh, Lance”

Photobucket

When she finally gets back to civilisation, her husband is about as deep as a 5ml spoon of medicine. Bearing in mind she’s been brutally raped, he actually says this to her…..

“I never pegged you for a gold-digger; but I never figured you’d spread your legs for some stranger either. Hell, I guess it was more than just one, wasn't it? How many were there, Brook? Remind me again, exactly how many men did you do?"

Um, hello????

So she divorces the super rich slime bag and returns to mountain man Lance. Cue more sentimental, breathy exclamations of love.

I am giving this 2 stars for the first third of the book. Each chapter tells either Brook’s horrific ordeal or the quiet, sleepy world that Lance lives in. I did actually consider the transition from a chapter of extreme violence to a chapter of calm and tranquillity quite a clever idea.

So, anyway, if any of my Goodreads friends or anyone else who happens on my review likes the sound of the synopsis and wants to give it a go, please don’t let my review put you off. These are, after all, only my opinions. I am no writer – what the heck do I know??

First off I have to say that this book is nothing like I thought it would be, I did read most of the previous reviews but still thought that it would be an erotic romance. I couldn't have been more wrong and what I did get I think worked much better than what I was expecting.

Brooklyn (h) and her husband had been going through some tough times but she was determined to get passed it and make their marriage a happy and close one again. When her husband had asked her to go to some old used book store to buy a copy of a rare book for his boss, she was more than happy to go for him. She gets in her expensive sports car, types the book store's address in to the gps and starts on her errand. The closer she gets to her destination the more she starts to doubt that she should be there at all. However this is important to her husband so she continues on. When she gets the the store she parks and gets out of her car, locking it she thinks to herself that she'll make it quick...just in and out. She never makes it inside the store, some lowlife makes some teasing remarks to her and she decides to abort her errand and head back to her car. As she reaches her car she is abducted.

Lance (H) has had a traumatic last few years and has given up on society and moved into a cabin high in the mountains . It's in the begigning of winter and he's doing some last minute chores before the big snow hits (he lives off the land and only earns money by selling steampunk jewelry and things that he makes). When he 's discovered the body of one of his goats that had been killed by a large mountain lion, out of no were comes a half naked and half dead woman. She's been beaten horribly and is wounded from her mad trek through trough terrain ,with nobother choice he takes her back to his cabin to try and do what he can for her.

Do not read this book if. 1) you cant stand detailed discriptions of brutal rapes. I'm not talking about the Hero rapeing her and her forgiving and loving him later type of thing, or any kind of BDSM type of senerios. This was pure malice, the bad guys being VERY BAD type of scenes. Or. 2) Your looking for an erotic book with hot love scenes.
The first part of this book is hard to read but the rest of it is a sweet love story about two very wounded poeple learning to live and love again.

2 Stars, or less really.. A big DNF for me.

I got about 55% through the book and was losing interest fast. I really hated that for two [2] reasons:

1 -- I had so much time invested in this damned thing [okay, only a few hours, but time is money and I ain't gettin' younger .. know what I mean]!!

2 -- Brooke, the poor thing. She was married to a man with no balls. He put her in a situation that got her into a terrible jam. There was an abduction and very graphically depicted, repeated, brutal assaults on her and she escapes .. GO Brooke!! She is found by this very gentle, kind hermit. He takes care of her and nurses her back to health. They begin to connect and then the book dives .... the dialogue turns cheesy, the plot dissolves, right before our very eyes. Poor Brooke, poor me .. I had to let it go.

A damn shame. So, I put this thing down and Becs picked it up. I tried to tell her and was really hoping it would redeem itself after I dropped it. Thinking, maybe I'll pick it up again... NOT!! See Becs review: http://www.goodreads.com/review/show/...

She didn't like it any better than I did and she finished!! So, a BIG DNF for me and I do feel bad, but so many more worthy books out there and times awastin' BABY!!

So, who would like this? I can't think of a living soul... so, maybe if you aren't with the living .. you may or not, but if not, don't blame me!!

Not going to be Happy Reading this one .. I'm fairly certain =)

-All of these aches and hurts, she decided are badges of courage, not marks of dishonor. They are battle wounds, tokens of her survival. Inner Thoughts of Brook in Betrayed

Brook was living the good life in her gated community, in her big house with her rich husband Clark. The setting is Denver,CO. The book starts with Brooke on her way out to start the day and run some errands. Clark remembers that he needs to get this book for his boss as a gift, Clark asks Brook if she could grab it while she is out. Clark suggest to her that she should take the Ferrai since this may be one of the last days she will get to drive it in the nice weather.(its early fall) She totally agrees and jumps in the Ferrai.

In a seedy neighborhood Brook starts to get a bad feeling, but this is where this book store is and its the only one that carries this book. Before Brook gets the chance to back track she is bum rushed an thrown back into the car. A gun is held to her temple and she is told to get on the floor. Both Brook and the car are stolen. The car is turned over to someone else and Brook is taken to a cabin in the mountains and held against her will.

The book is fast paced and in your face raw. I would say the first half is rough to read. It is told in two pov's Brook's and a man named Lance. Lance is a loner living in the mountains away from civilization. Their worlds collide when Brook runs into Lance while making her great escape. Lance and Brook slowly bond and fall in love. This made the book better however that's if you can make it through all the cruelty, hatred and humiliation Brook has to endure before she escapes.

My Ratings
Characters- Okay
Writing Style- Raw,Heavy and solid
Plot/Storyline- Raw and Exposed
Overall- A heavy emotional read- Reader beware

Hmmm. It wasn't that it was horribly written I guess unless you consider poor plotting and weird author decisions poor writing which oops! I think I do. First part of the book has the heroine kidnapped and raped after going to pick up something for her husband in a bad part of town. So you know from that and some other clues that the husband is behind it all. But, here's a wimp out, the authors choose to make the husband the leader of a group of car thieves. No reason at all for the wife to have even been sent on the errand. I thought that maybe it was going to turn out that he was trying to do her in but no. She was just in the wrong place at the wrong time. Bad criminal husband. Bad! Bad! You poor planner you.

So she is kidnapped and violently graphically raped over and over again with gross details. So okay dark story. She'll escape and there will be a dark intense revenge or maybe given the book blurb she will be out of the frying pan into the fire with another psychopath. But she will fight and triumph. At least that was what I was expecting. But no...

When she escapes and does a pretty fine harrowing job, she lands with a loner mountain man who is just the sweetest guy who ever hid out in the woods. It was all rainbows and fairy dust and bunnies and pink ponies and...

No tension no mental problems no nothing. Just a sweet little story of two people falling in love. And they were so considerate of each other and helpful and caring and sharing their boring stories. That's all very well and good for real life but it doesn't make riveting reading.

And in the end she just divorces her inept criminal husband and heads back to fairy land with her hermit prince.

I really should stop buying books because of the cover.

Anyways, Brook is filthy rich (supposedly) and while driving her Ferrari she is kidnapped. Her abductors rape her from all angles and inside out. Gross.

The part of Brook captivity is really gross, disgusting, and, I found it to be very real. I mean, Hawkinson didn't hold back in the description and the language. If you have issues with women being raped don't read this book.

I found the beginning of the book (yeah, the captivity part) to be very good. I know, I already admitted I am a weird psycho so...

The problem with the story started when Brook escaped and is rescued by Lance. After TWO months of living with Lance she wants him. On page 228 she tells Lance "I want you. I want you so badly."

Let me stop right here. Don't rape victims need counseling, therapy, treatment or something before they are able to "love" again? And only two months and you already want to have sex? After your anus was broken and...?

On top of that, they go for it but Brook stops because (thank god) she is concerned about having some STD and passing it to Lance. And Lance? "I'll take my chances" he said. Seriously, the woman was repeatedly raped by three unknown low life deviants and you don't care that she might have gotten some STD or HIV? Way to go Hawkinson.

I am not saying that rape victims shouldn't get their lives back, but a little reality here would've made this a good book. Hawkinson went from hardcore pornography straight to romance. Sorry, I needed something in between.

I can't believe that it has been a year since I read this book. I am now only getting round to posting my review on Goodreads. This story was so gripping that I had to post something.

It begins with a car-jacking gone wrong, an abduction and a woman who is gang raped but who manages to escape to the Colorado wilderness. This all happens at the beginning of a harsh winter.

This beginning combines to create the deep intensity of Betrayed. This novel pulled me into a nightmare that kept me turning the pages long into the early hours of the morning. I just could not put it down. What was I expecting when I started reading Betrayed -not sure - but I can honestly say it was a tremendous read and the ending was just right I am glad to say.

Betrayed is not for the faint hearted. It contains violence and adult situations and you will find yourself wanting to do harm to the perpetrators of Brooks ordeal. It was a great read and so very well written and although I wanted to get to the end to find out what the outcome was - I didn't want it to end it was that good. Read it for yourself but don't start it late at night! It will be too hard to put down.

Second chance

I read Zeke and it was indifferent... I read this book thinking to give the author a second chance based on the reviews and again I'm indifferent. Is it dark? Some of it, very, most of it, no. The h went through some horrible crap to be sure and it is explained in exacting, though repetitive, detail. However, a few sordid scenes does not a dark book make. The lovey dovey far exceeds the bad and I'm getting really annoyed with authors advertising a dark book with all sorts of warnings and then throwing in sensitive Hs and HEAs. Still, decent story line, well written, good flow, so three stars.

I have no idea what publishing company Wodke Hawkinson is signed to, but the book cover they chose looks like something you'd see on a Wattpad story, designed by one of the less talented cover designers that are floating around the site. But, like I said, I don't really know much about this company--maybe they're just a really small company trying to pick themselves up off the ground, which I respect. However, if Betrayed had been contracted to bigger company, you can bet your asses (excuse my french) it would have far more than 77 (now 78) Goodreads reviews. I just think this book needed more exposure.

This book was so wonderfully and beautifully written. Why Hawkinson wasn't signed to a big time publishing company is a mystery to me. She's an excellent writer and really knows how to deliver a story that provokes emotion and passion. I cried...and I cried some more. The writing was so poignant and real, the description creating vivid images in my mind. But I'll tell you one thing: whoever her publishers are, they're smart. They were smart enough to recognize an amazing writer and novel.

I nearly abandoned the book at 50%. The subject matter was obviously hard to think about but I got a bit lost between 30 and 50%.... I didn't feel like the book was getting anywhere. Then from 60 % onwards I got right into it and couldn't put it down. 3.5 stars

I can't decide if I would recommend this book or not. I'm the type of reader that hates to leave a story unfinished whether I'm enjoying it or not. I'll even skim to the end to find out how the story wraps up, if I must, but I can't put a book away until I know how it ends. I was tempted to skim through this story. The first 25%-30% or so was hard to take. It switches back and forth between the hero's peaceful homesteading life and the heroine's nightmarish abduction and multiple graphic rape scenes. I wouldn't have been able to take it if it weren't for other reviewers saying the whole books isn't like that, just the first third.

After reading the last word and tucking the story away, here are my final thoughts:

1. The ending did not leave me feeling satisfied. Yes, there is a happily-ever-after, but I wish I FELT the bad guys got their due. I just didn't.

2. I had a hard time believing our heroine wasn't more emotionally traumatized at the cabin, no matter how kind the hero was.

3. One of the things that got me through the horrific, graphic rape scenes was the hope that the love scenes with the hero would be proportionally graphic to assure the reader (me!) our abused heroine was shown the patience, tenderness, and love she so richly deserves. Apparently, the authors didn't agree with that sentiment.

4. Suspending disbelief was difficult at times, such as how she chose to deal with her husband's transgressions.

5. I most definitely enjoyed the authors' writing style and learning about the odds and ends of homesteading. They did a spectacular job of giving me a sense of the lifestyle without turning it into a dry how-to manual.

All-in-all, the book wasn't expensive and I felt I got my money's worth.

I didn't think much of this book. It was not dark and too much romance for me.

It had a good storyline to it though, if only I was into romance.

The book had two endings, I only read the original. But if you end up reading the second ending, please let me know what happens, as I am curious to find out....

The book was in the females and males point of view.

I guess the best place to start is at the beginning…

The first 30% of this book was really hard to read. The authors switch back and forth between the two characters, Lance and Brooklyn. The reason it was hard to read was because one half was slow and unexciting (Lance) and the other half was gruesome and appalling (Brooklyn). Lance lives out in the middle of nowhere in a cabin in the woods. The first part of the book is about his way of life, which was sort of interesting, but also pretty boring. He is a lone wolf. On the other hand, Brooklyn is abducted, beaten, mistreated and raped. Some of the scenes are pretty detailed. While it is important to the story to understand what Brooklyn went through, it is not an easy thing to read. It’s brutal, heartbreaking and sickening. Therefore, for the first part of the book I didn’t have an escape. I was either uninterested or repulsed. Both parts are important to the story to come, but it was really hard for me to get into the story in the beginning.

The story really picks up after Brooklyn and Lance meet. They develop a friendship and eventually a romance. I really enjoyed reading about their time together and watching their feelings for one another develop. However, with so many romance novels out there today, there wasn’t too much about their relationship that really stuck out to me personally.

I gave Betrayed by Wodke Hawkinson (K. Wodke and PJ Hawkinson) 2 STARS. This book was okay. It’s an original concept and at times very interesting. There were parts that were extremely enjoyable, but my overall feelings for this book rest at okay.

-XOXO

OK, it is gonna be hard for me to review this book. Don't get me wrong I liked it. It's just I don't know. Ok, let me try to explain. This came across as a Dark Read when I read the synopsis. And it was, kinda. Let me try again. It started off as a Dark Read and as for the Dark read part it was GREAT!! The places the beginning of this book took Brooklyn was down right as bad as bad could get. I'm I held my breath at times wondering how this poor woman endured all that she was put threw. The men were down right evil with no respect for her and as heartless as can be. Then I found myself wondering how she had the strength to survive. So in the dark read aspect it was great. Then it turned in to a recovery by a stranger who helped her and then it kind of turned into a contemporary where two damaged souls find and help each other and love blossoms unexpectedly as they wait out the winter. Then it is Brooklyn own her own back in her world where she discovers how badly she had been Betrayed. Then a reuniting.

Now a lot happens int between all of this. You really have to read it. But still it is a dark read but it's not, it is a contemporary but it's not, it's a book of love found, love lost, but then it's not just that either. It's like a mish mash of all of that.

This book was expertly written. It give you the complete story with nothing left out. It is a full length novel.

Would I recommend it? Yes and No. I don't know how to explain it. It was heartbreaking in the beginning. It was tragic and heart warming in the middle. The end was eye opening and left you feeling as if all was as it should be.

It probably is just me but in the middle of the book I felt the story just...drift for me. But then again that is just me. Everyone's opinion is different. This is just mine. But it was a great story line and was superbly written.

First off I have to say I'm not much of a 'fiction' lover, I'm usually only into memoirs or biographies - but I have to say, the cover is what caught my eye on this one. And after seeing the promo's on twitter, I thought I'd give it a shot.
I found myself intrigued and caught up in the story-line from the get go. Yes, it does have its brutal parts, but that is a vital part of the story, and sadly, part of reality sometimes, as 'real life ain't always pretty' - we all know that. But love shines through in the end, showing us once again that in spite of the worst thing you could ever imagine happening to you, something good and wonderful CAN come of it - giving us hope that perhaps everything does happen for a reason...and sometimes even evil can have a silver lining for the strong that have the will to fight for it.
I found this read impeccably written and presented in a way that kept your interest by bouncing back and forth between the two very different lives of the main characters - much like a movie would.

I admit, I stopped reading this book after three chapters. It was so gruesome and disturbing, so I removed it from my Kindle. But the next morning I put it back on my Kindle because I had to know what happened to Brook. And I'm happy to report that I'm so glad I continued on. After those first brutal chapters, what remained was a sweet, tender romance with a beautiful HEA. Lance was the sweetest, kindest hero with the perfect amount of angst and beautiful devotion to our heroine. This story has haunted my thoughts for weeks now and I have a feeling it will continue to do so for many weeks to come, and I'm so hapoy about that.

Recommended by a book buddy and I have to say initially I thought wow does my buddy not like me what is she doing to me lol.

I had so many moments where I nearly stopped reading this book not because I didn’t like it but because I thought I was having a panic attack and struggling to breathe HONESTLY.

This story certainly drew me in consumed all my thoughts, my kindle hit the sofa so many times in my anger at what Brooklyn had to endure.

It has taken me three days to start another book as I could not stop thinking about this one.

This book was extremely original.... It seems like something that could possibly happen... And I would hope after someone having suffered so badly, they would find an HEA. I read some comments about the brutal rape scenes and them being too much... I think they were written spot on, and probably not near as bad as they truly are. Don't let those comments deter you from an original story. They are somewhat descriptive but most books describe much more when it's consensual....

I can't say I loved reading this book. I liked it and enjoyed the story. I just couldn't come to terms with what Brooke went through and the outcome of the story. I know everyone heals in different ways, but found the end hard to believe with what she endured. About 67% into the book I had to throw my kindle down and walk away. I really was afraid for Brooke. Overall a good read. Going to read the alternate ending now!!

I had to walk away a couple of times to regain composure....

Gritty, intense and so scary!! My heart broke for Brooklyn and the horror she experienced at the hands of her kidnappers. I don't do spoilers...but the first half of this book will break your heart, make you mad and if the scenes are hard to read...walk away and come back...it's worth it to read the second half. And I love the alternate ending!! That was kick butt!

I had trouble with this one and the violence at the begining. But worth making it through. thank god the author wrote an alternate ending! The alternate ending was great so you have to get both if you are going to take the time to read this one. Just be warned that this book is intense and not for everyone. But the love story at the end is worth it when you read the alternate ending.

3.5/5

Capital-P poignant.

This book was gut-wrenching and heartbreaking in some parts, but in others, it utterly warmed my heart and offered me more than enough sweet moments. I initially thought that it would be a dark read, but after reading it, I found the story far more sweet than bitter.

Anyway, there were some parts in this book that didn’t quite work for me.

--The dialogue between Lance and Brook sounded somewhat cheesy.
--The story moved painfully slowly.
--There were many things in this story that didn't seem to make sense to me. Some of them were unrealistic and the rest was implausible.

Nevertheless, it was a touching and entertaining read. My actual rating is 3.5 stars but I rounded it up to 4.

**There were graphic scenes of rape, abuse, and violence. Not recommended for the faint of heart.

What can i say?

The first quarter of the book started off like a thriller, but very detailed and graphic, certainly not going to be to everyone's taste, then the rest of the book completely turned around and I thought I was reading a Mills and Boon novel, very disappointing.
