First off, ignore the cheesy cover art. My biggest concern with the cover is that it portrays a teen, whereas Aileen Donovan is actually 26. I think it takes away from the intelligence of the novel and makes it look like another addition to the lame teen genre, when honestly, it’s not.
The novel is a little short, especially for the first in a series. That’s my way of saying; I wish the novel had more of back story about the four types of elementals- water, fire, air, earth. Also, about their philosophy and origin- it did touch upon some mythology, but I wanted more! The book is focused heavily on detective work, which is probably why I didn’t give this novel a higher score. If the novel included both a mix of detective work and mythology, I would’ve been happier.
However, don’t let that throw you off. Angela Wallace writes with talent, actually uses words where I had to use my ereader’s dictionary, and you can tell she’s passionate about her work. Keep in mind; this is a self published novel.
Elemental Magic was my first elemental novel. This book has the right formula of being smart without being too difficult to understand –perfect for readers of diverse ages- had me entertained, and I cared for the well being of the characters (well, most of them, some characters were a tad annoying or maybe unrealistic). Overall, I just needed more, but I hardly think that’s a bad thing.
