I mean...it does its job. I reference it a lot when I'm at work and frequently skim the skill sheets throughout the year just to keep up on my knowledge.
I just became a lifeguard for Seven Peaks, in Salt Lake. This book helped me so much. If it wasn't for this book I wouldn't have a job this summer. Its a good book, really descriptive and has some cool pictors too. So if you ever want a job as a lifeguard or just want to know something cool get this book, its awesome. :)
The chapter on First Aid is probably one of my favorite parts. It was pretty exact with how it told you how to do everything. Like how to tell if someone's having shock or severe hypothermia or even sunstroke and how to treat them. It showed how to treat cuts, burns, breaks, sprans and shock. I hope I will never have to do any of that, but I'll be ready just in case.
Even though I'm a hands on learner, this book still helped alot. It walks you through everthing. Its not just this is this, do this do that, it tells you in great detail how to do it, Being able to pracitce hands on after reading the book really helped as well.
Solid information, but in some cases far more detailed than it needed to be. The many mnemonic devices did not help me at all. However, this is a good road map for those hoping to achieve their life guarding certification.
I had to read this for a swim team lifeguard course, but at least I definitely learned some new skills. (if you ever need to be saved from drowning, I'm your gal)
lol i’m rly behind on my reading goal so this is me catching up! i had to get recertified for lifeguarding and tbh i only read like 4 chapters in their entirety as well as the skill sheets because i didn’t need to take the test again.
It is kind of odd to put a star rating on the ARC Lifeguarding manual...I mean, it is a good manual...but is it 5 star worthy? 4 star? 3 star?
Who knows.
At any rate, I was a little sad that in the latest edition (it just came out), the ARC took out the review questions at the end of each chapter. I had to go online to find any sort of test preparation and review.
I was also a little frustrated at the paired down First Aid section - this has really seen a decrease in the last 5 years. Good thing I have been guarding for more than twice that time and remember the "good ole days" when CPR & First Aid training took ALL DAY.
Otherwise, this text got the job done (I think. I have not got my test results back).
