Welcome to the wonderfully patterned world of Checkers and Dot! This sweet and striking series of board books has been designed especially for babies and tots. With high-contrast, patterned art for developing eyes, simple but memorable rhyming text for reading aloud, and cute-as-a-button characters, J. Torres and J. Lum have created engaging first books that little ones and their loved ones will want to cozy up with and read again and again. A simple, sturdy, and stylish new series for those just beginning to look, listen, and learn.
Checkers and Dot at the Zoo invites us to follow along with Checkers and Dot as they explore the zoo, meeting animals, black, white, and patterned, too.

Every night that my son doesn’t fall asleep right after his bottle I read to him. Tonight this was the book. I checked it out from my local library thinking he would like it. We already have high contrast black and white cards for tummy time but I thought he would like it in story form. I ways wrong, he didn’t really like it, he prefers books with bright colors and rhymes like dr.suess. This however was a good book for his age group. I’m sure other kids his age would enjoy it.
This is maybe my favorite Checkers and Dot book- the illustrations cleverly feature all black and white animals at the zoo while rhyming a very very simple and short story perfect for the youngest infants. The illustrations aren't anything special, but the bold textures and patterns will appeal to their developmental interests and the clean smooth shapes of the animals stand out on the page enough.
I see what they're trying to do by playing with the high contrast illustrations, but I wonder if the complicated, busy illustrations detract from the effectiveness of high contrast. Is there research to show that this type of book will actually enhance the experience? Gave me a headache, to be honest. Don't know what it would do for a baby.
A black and white book that was more than just single pictures to look at. I really liked how this was different than most of the other black and white books out there. It had a small plot line, characters, and more patterns to the illustrations.
Another excellent book for babies. I love the black and white color scheme. This will engage little ones from the first day! The rhyme is great too for when they get a bit older!! Short and simple enough that as toddlers, they will be able to memorize easily and "read along". Recommend.
