Learn the Signature Techniques of Top Polymer Clay Artists
Polymer Clay Master Class offers you a close-up look at the creative processes of eleven acclaimed polymer clay artists as they share their expertise with one another and you. Judy Belcher and Tamara Honaman bring together these talented artists for the first time, offering their individual techniques and then documenting how they inspire and challenge one another in the creation of collaborative pieces. In five lessons with sixteen guided projects, you will gain an understanding of the polymer clay skills you’ve always wanted to master, such • Creating with sculpture, canework, and imitative techniques • Altering the surface with carving, transfers, imprint, and silk screening • Incorporating mixed media, such as metal, wood, and fiber • Designing using cold connections, hollow and lightweight forms, kinetic construction, and jewelry-finishing techniques • Pushing the boundaries of the Skinner Blend technique • Collaborating with fellow artists to open up new creative possibilities With contributors including Leslie Blackford, Cynthia Tinapple, Lindly Haunani, Sarah Shriver, and many others, you have a front-row seat to the world of innovative polymer clay art. Challenge your assumptions about methods, style, and collaboration, and get ready to start on your own creative journey.
If you are starting polymer clay art, look at this book for inspiration. However, this is not a beginner book, although information is included on the basic tools and equipment one needs as well as the Skinner Blend technique. I recommend it for people who have the basic skills and would like to hone them and get some ideas.
Master Class: what you get when instructed by professionals. Imagine a group of diverse polymer artists together for a week, collaborating on projects. This is the culmination of that week. The book reads like a story. It is divided into sections by collaborative project. The artists are paired, then each is showcased separately with a bio and a featured project. The collaborative project is the highlight of each section.
The projects are grouped as follows, each title hinting at the core of the collaboration: 1. Attract your opposite 2. Respect hidden strengths 3. Be passionate about the process 4. Using new mediums 5. Mix it up
Jewelry prominently figures in the projects, but they also include figurines, sculpture, surface treatments, inner armature, bowls, fabric, photographic transfer, metalworking, and more. Detailed instructions and photos are provided so the reader can create a similar work. Technical instructions on sanding and creating veneers, for example, enriched the material.
I felt very energized during my read and plan to incorporate what I learned in my own polymer pieces. Highly recommended.
