Lisa Childs infuses The Buried with plenty of mystery, violence, and secrets. This is the fourth book in the Bane Island crime thriller and romantic suspense series. It features State Trooper Sergeant Beverly Mae Montgomery and Bode James, a fitness trainer and co-owner of Halcyon Hall. Halcyone Hall is a spa and wellness center built on the grounds of a former institution for those suffering from mental illness and those committed by their families. Located on Bane Island off the coast of Maine, the building and surrounding grounds seem to be another character in the novel.

Mae desperately wants to solve a disappearance and a death. She believes she knows who is responsible, but is she right? Bode grew up on Bane Island and worked to transform the former psychiatric hospital into a wellness resort. But no one is safe. Bode has already lost the mother of his child. Who will be next? Who can be trusted?

Mae is determined to find the truth, but she also has some pre-determined ideas that may or may not be right. She’s serious, driving, independent, fearless, and can be impatient. Bode is charming, smart, hardworking, wants to know the truth, and is a loving and protective father. Many characters from the previous books appear and some play significant roles in this one as well.

The author is an excellent storyteller who kept me on the edge of my seat. The storyline is gripping and grabbed my attention immediately. As in previous books, readers get glimpses of the antagonist without seeing who it is. The plot is solid and has several twists. I was able to guess a couple of them, but I was surprised by one. There’s plenty of action and suspense along with some emotional scenes and a budding romance. The volatile scenes at the end kept me turning the pages. The book held my interest and kept me engaged. Themes include disappearances, relationships, family, romance, trust, secrets, and much more. There are some disturbing references to events that occurred at the psychiatric hospital years ago. Trying to understand the fallout from those actions kept secret added another layer of intrigue to the plot. Ms. Childs did a great job of bringing together the past and how it affected the present situation.

Overall, I enjoyed this novel which was suspenseful, atmospheric, full of action, and it had great characterization. If you enjoy engaging romantic suspense thrillers, then I recommend this series.

Kensington Books, Zebra and Lisa Childs provided a complimentary digital ARC of this novel via NetGalley. All opinions expressed in this review are my own. Publication date is currently set for September 26, 2023. This review was originally posted at Mystery and Suspense Magazine.

If at first, or second or third, you don't succeed try it a fourth time. I really want to like this series, it has so many elements that should make it awesome. But I do like to finish what I start and Bodie has been such a tragic character, I really want him to get an HEA and I really want to know what the heck is really going on at Bainsworth Manor. I really like the characters all of whom have been damaged by what has happened at Bainsworth Manor. The secrets can't stay buried and it's time for a little final justice.

Elijia Cooke and Bode James have transformed the shuttered asylum, Bainsworth Manor, into an upscale wellness retreat, Halcyon Hall. But something sinister lurks the grounds and some say that it's the spirits of those who came to Bainsworth Manor and never left.

Mae Montgomery knows that a murderer stalks the grounds of Halcyon Hall, and she is sure she knows who it is, she just has to prove it. Stymied by the authorities who like neat packages with pretty bows, Trooper Montgomery is on her own to prove what she is positive is murder by Bode James. So, she assumes the identity of her dead sister, takes vacation time and infiltrates the Hall as a paying guest. It didn't take long before her real identity and motive are discovered.

Bode James grew up on Bane Island and is determined that Halcyon Hall is a success to wipe away the bad memory of Bainsworth Manor and what took place there. But he knows that a murderer is at large, even if the authorities don't believe so. When Mae appears in the guise of someone he knew and lost, he knows she only wants to find the killer, even if she thinks it's him. He can work with that. Finding the killer is what matters. The pesky attraction needs to take a backseat to that.

The plot and the characters. It is all about the plot and characters for me with this series. The writing was abysmal, but I kept coming back for the plot and the characters. I have got to hand it to Lisa Childs I figured out some of it, but the baddies eluded me completely. Lots of plot twists and misdirection, just how I like my mysteries.

My thanks to the Publisher and the author, for providing a complimentary digital Advanced Reader Copy (ARC) of this novel via NetGalley. This is my fair, honest and personal review. All opinions are mine alone and were not biased in any way.

THE BURIED is Book 4 in Lisa Childs' BANE ISLAND series, set on a remote Atlantic island off the coast of Maine. Although I haven't read the first 3 in the series (though I'm about to), just from the setting I expected remoteness, isolation, and lots and lots of danger and secrets: because, an estate that covers about half an island? With cliffs and ocean and tunnels? SO many places to conceal Secrets....and fatalities. Accidental or Intentional.

This is Romantic Suspense, so be prepared for romance and romantic tension woven throughout, also frequently steam and hot breathing, with some spice. A whole lot of Romance. And a tremendous amount of wonderfully complicated Suspense!

A luxurious wellness center off the coast of Maine can’t outrun its dark past.

State trooper Mae Montgomery knows that celebrity fitness trainer Bode James is a murderer, but can’t prove it. Bode and his brother, descendants of the founding family of Bane Island, are trying to wipe out the dark legacy of their family’s past by turning the manor that once housed an asylum for wayward young women into a desirable retreat. Deaths keep occurring, and Mae firmly believes that Bode is behind them….she holds him responsible for her own sister’s death years ago as well. When her request for a search warrant to look for Heather, yet another missing young woman at Halcyon Hall, is denied, Mae decides to book a stay under an assumed name in order to look for Heather and find proof of Bode’s guilt. Her deception is discovered almost immediately, but to her surprise Bode agrees to let her stay and search. Not everyone is pleased with Mae’s presence, particularly those who feel that her animosity towards Bode is unfounded. What is clear is that a murderer is somewhere on the island, and he or she needs to be stopped before another victim is chosen….and Mae may be next on the killer’s list.
The Buried is the fourth in the Bane Island series of romantic thrillers, but it is not essential to have read the preceding three in order to enjoy this novel on its own. Mae is a strong, smart and driven woman looking to avenge her sister’s death as well as solve the murders happening in the current day. There are plenty of suspects from which to choose, and the gothic feel of a remote island in the throes of heavy winter storms adds to the air of menace. Add in a creepy grandfather whose own grandchildren consider to be evil, a stately old house that was the site of malevolent acts, and the tension between Rae and Bode, and the reader has a fast-paced, can’t-be-put-down mystery to enjoy. Readers of the previous books in the series, as well as fans of authors like Mary Burton, Julie Garwood and Kendra Elliot will want to give The Buried, and the rest of the Bane Island series, a try. Thanks to NetGalley and Kensington Books/Zebra for granting me access to an advanced reader’s copy.

I always look forward to returning to Bane Island and visiting with the residents of Halcyon Hall, creepy though it may be. In the fourth book in the series, the focus is on Deputy Mae Montgomery and her quest to find out the truth about missing women as well as her determination to pin a crime on Bode James, one of the founders of the spa at Halcyon. Mae enters the hall in disguise since that’s the only way she can get in, so the part of the book introducing her entrance moves along a little slowly. Once Mae gets into the Hall, all kinds of dangerous things start happening all around her and she isn’t sure who, if anyone, she can trust. As the reader, I had no idea who to trust either because there are a lot of false clues and red herrings…a perfect addition to an eerie and atmospheric tale. The setting is on an island but the story itself is almost gothic, with underground passageways and characters who are supposedly there to rest but who also know a lot about the Hall that is weirdly prescient. The story moves along at a good pace and is hard to put down, with constantly changing action and some deliberate misdirection. The drama in the story is believable and suspenseful with all of the subplots tied up well together by the end. The characterization is nothing short of brilliant since the characters are all complex and many are disturbed and give an edginess to the storyline that could not exist without them. This book just reeks of the evil all around small and isolated Bane Island and the setting and characters make this romantic suspense thriller one of the best I have ever read. This book may be read as a standalone, but it is easier to understand the characters and story if you read all of the books in the series and in order.

I am a fan of mystery thrillers. I wish I could say that I really enjoyed this ebook but I also have to say that I’ve jumped into this series at what seems to be the end.

The constant references to previous happenings left me confused and annoyed. The offer of the this “last” in the series book literally makes no sense when it is so difficult to read the current storyline with all the mentions of what went on in the past. It quickly became obvious to me that you need to read all the previous books to understand the past history which is tied into this story.

So, I chose to ignore the past references and just tried to follow the current story which was an okay mystery on it’s own. At the end the author tied up a lot of what seemed to be previous loose ends in the other books which was fine. The epilogue I felt was overdone with too many coincidences and just not believable.

I gave the author three stars on the assumption that for those who had read the previous books this might have been a more enjoyable read than I found it to be.

I won this ebook in a First Reads giveaway.

This is the 4th book in the Bane Island series. Each book features a different view of Bane Island and it's history but the characters change, so each is a stand alone story that has Bane Island as it's background.
Bane Island was once the home of to many troubled women whose families brought them to receive physcological treatment at the hospital there. The hospital closed many years prior to the buildings being remodeled and repurposed into a health and wellness center. But the history of mistreatment and unexplained deaths seems to have continued. When another young woman is reported missing, Maine State Trooper Mae Montgomery is assigned to investigate. Mae has history with the island, her sister died after checking into the center. Her investigation will include many twists that will leave you looking for the missed clues.
This is a romantic suspense, so you'll meet and learn to love/ distrust Bode along the way.
I've read the first three books and all four are very good reads.

A fast paced romantic suspense regarding the case of missing girls that is linked to an age old case. Mae, an investigating officer when denied the warrant to search a holiday home decides to pursue the investigation by entering the home under the pretense of vacation using her dead sister's name. The holiday home owner , Bode James decides to help her despite being suspect number one in her list .
Both the characters are average. Being a police officer, she is required to be rescued multiple times. As mentioned in the beginning this is a fast paced novel which can be completed in one sitting.

Thanks to NetGalley for an eARC of this book. It was a good mystery. I didn't realize it was part of a series until I was partway through the book. I plan to read the books before this one. If you haven't read the previous books, the author did a good job filling in those blanks, but I still want to learn the stories of some other characters. In The Buried, we have Bode James and Sergeant Beverly Mae Montgomery, that are we follow. Sergeant Montgomery believes Bode James is responsible for two missing women, Heather and Erika, one already found dead. She can't get a warrant to investigate the wellness resort Bode is part owner of, so she uses a disguise and vacation leave to stay at the resort to explore. However, Bode immediately sees through her disguise but allows her to stay because he also wants to find out who is responsible for Heather and Erika going missing. There is also a larger story that seems to be taking the series to figure out, which happened 40 years before at what is now called Halcyon Hall. At that time, it was called Bainesworth Manor, and young girls were sent there that were pregnant. Many of the young women and some of the babies disappeared. Edie Stone, a reporter, has been investigating that mystery. The story has several twists, and a killer is trying to take out those that get in the way.
I look forward to more books in this series.

This book was fantastic. It’s the 4rh book in The Bane Island Novel series. I hope there’s more books to come. I’ll list all the books at the end of this review. So many secrets at the Bainesworth Manor that now has been transformed into a spa.
Bode James is a trainer at the spa, and helps people. He and his brother Elijah have just found out some awful things, and just experienced the worst kind of evil within there own family.
Now seeing to there new arrival he knew it couldn’t be, and he had to check in on the person. He couldn’t believe who it was. The one person who looked at him as the one responsible for death of so many. He should throw out, and send her back. He had to prove his innocence to her. His brother already fell for the reporter Edie Stone.

Beverly Mae Montgomery did know what she was doing going to Halcyon Hall, but she needed answers about her sisters. She hoped Bode would let her in. Well she would do whatever she needed to do.

While Mae is in the manor she learns many things, and her life is in danger. The only thing is she things Bode is the person is in charge. He’s always there afterwards. Buy the book to see what happens. So much more to come.

REVIEW: THE BURIED BY LISA CHILDS
I did not like anything about this book. I didn't like the characters, and the storyline. I was disappointed because I was expecting something like; people sequestered on an island with a murderer. It was supposed to be exciting and thrilling, but this book was just not 'it' for me
👮🏼‍♀️🏃🏼‍♂️
This book reminded me of why I don't like romantic suspense. I didn't even feel law enforcement vibes from the FMC. There was no detection, the kind of book that the perps reveal themselves. I didn’t even feel any chemistry or romantic vibes from Beverley and James

The Buried is book four in Childs’ Bane Island series. I, however, didn’t pay attention to it belonging to a series and read it as a standalone novel. While it can be read this way, I personally believe that the reader would have a better understanding of the background of the storyline if the books are read in order. At times I had reader remorse for not reading the previous novels prior to this novel.

I really enjoyed this thriller and the twists and turns it took me on. It took me a little while to change gears from the romance kick I had been on to get into the thriller mode of this storyline but once I clicked into place the book went by quick. I never guessed the whodunit in this novel. At one point I was pointing fingers at everyone but the true culprit.

I would definitely recommend this as a binge worthy vacation series. It is perfect reading for poolside or even fireside on a cold day. I do recommend though reading the series in order. I feel the readers get a much better understanding of the storyline and history of the characters by doing this.

The book synopsis is taken from Amazon:

For fans of the bestsellers The Sanatorium and The Guest List, the latest novel in this atmospheric series, set in a former insane asylum on a remote island off the coast of Maine, is laden with Gothic atmosphere and brilliantly plotted twists and turns.

Somewhere inside Halcyon Hall, the elite spa with an infamous past on a remote Maine island, are the answers state trooper Mae Montgomery desperately needs to solve a murder investigation. To find them, she’s checking into the exclusive retreat under an assumed name—that of her late sister, a former model. But at least one person isn’t fooled.

Fitness trainer Bode James grew up on Bane Island and took it upon himself to transform the former psychiatric hospital into a wellness resort. But a killer still lurks here. Bode already lost the mother of his child. And though he believes Mae is there under false pretenses, he also fears that without her help, more people will die.

Mae blames Bode for contributing to her sister’s death. But who can be trusted at Halcyon Hall? Beneath its history of dead and missing women is a legacy of evil that must be reckoned with at last, before it buries them all . .

Halcyon hall has had a bad reputation attached to it, but although Bode James and his brother has taken it over and turned it into a spa it seems the murders are still happening. When state trooper May Montgomery checks in under her murdered sisters name Kimber Lee she’s hoping no one will notice she’s not the model but before Bode even sets eyes on the police woman he knows there is an imposter in their midst. She wouldn’t have to do this if it wouldn’t be for local DA and her ex Adam who seems to never want to get her the search warrant she needs because it isn’t just her sister Lee Lee who is missing and presumed dead the mother of Bodes daughter also hasn’t been seen in May thinks he is the one responsible. She also wants to prove The innocence for the woman accused. As I always say there’s so much more to this book than the brief summary I have done there’s a stranger who stays at the boarding house that has something to do with the case and what will happen if Adam finds out she’s illegally investigating anyway and will she even make it off the island at all? I really enjoyed The last book with the reporter who is now living at the spa and dating the older brother and I don’t know if it was just the space I was in at the time but I had to make myself finish this one but having said that I would still recommend this is a great Siri‘s and this is the first book I didn’t absolutely love from the collection. Lisa Childs is a great rider and The Bain Island Mysteries are a great series. I want to thank the publisher and Net galley for my free art copy please forgive any mistakes as I am blind and dictate my review.

The Buried, by Lisa Childs, is the 4th novel in her Bane Island series. Oftentimes, jumping into the 4th book in a series is not an easy accomplishment, as it leads to questions about the characters and their development in the previous novels. Childs did an excellent job of providing information from the previous 3 novels; however, due to a huge cast of characters in The Buried, it was somewhat confusing at times.

One of my guiding factors in choosing this book for review was the setting on a remote island off the coast of Maine. As a Maine native, I found this setting very atmospheric, well detailed, and a remarkable description of a true Maine blizzard which only added to the suspense of this novel.

As a romantic suspense novel, it certainly hits its mark. Romantic sparks fly between the main characters of Mae and Bode and there are some very hot and passionate scenes between them.
To gain a better knowledge of the plot and characters of The Buried, it would be advantageous to the reader to go back and read the first 3 installments of this series, as it is a bit difficult to label this novel as a standalone.

All in all, this was a quick and enjoyable read. I give this novel 4 out of 5 stars. I would like to thank NetGalley, Lisa Childs, and Kenniston Publishing for the opportunity to read this ARC. I am leaving an honest and voluntary review.

THE BURIED
By Lisa Childs
Comes out September 26 2023

This is a book four in the Bane Island series. It revolves around the old Bainesworth Manor. That was once an asylum for wayward girls! The Manor was on the coast of Maine
First book - The Runaway
Second Book - The Hunted
Third Book - The Missing

This book can be read as a standalone. But I think, reading them an order would give you a better understanding of what was actually happening around the manner.

This book is based around the characters Mae Montgomery and Bode James.
Mae is a police sergeant, looking into some mysterious deaths that happened at the manor. Also looking for some missing women.

Body James is the wellness fitness trainer. He is also a Bainesworth. He is trying to erase the past suspicions about the manner. He has a single dad and he does not want his daughter growing up under the same suspicions that he had to go up under.

This is definitely an intense mystery. It will keep you on the edge of your seat. There are so many twists and turns it’s hard to get into what is actually happening in the book. You definitely have to read it to appreciate it.
Lisa Childs did an amazing job once again!

I was given this book by NetGalley in return for my honest review.

Will the evil of Bainesworth Manor ever be fully known. Mae knows that she has no choice but to take over her dead sister’s identity to find out the truth. She knows that Bode knows more about her sister’s death. And she will uncover the truth but she just didn’t expect Bode and his daughter.
Bode knows the truth about Mae but can he convince her that he had nothing to do with the latest death at the manor? He knows that his family are mostly evil but all him & his brother Elijah want us to help people but he fears that everything that they have done is for nothing. But will him & Mae uncover the last secrets that are hidden below?
Do they have a chance at happiness together?
A great read in the series. Enjoyed finding out more about the families they certainly were evil & twisted.
Mae is a strong independent woman that doesn’t trust easily. All she wants is the truth and she won’t back down until she finds the truth. Bode & Elijah are good men that only want to help others and they have fought hard to prove that they aren’t they same as the rest of the family.

The perfect blend of suspense and romance, I thoroughly enjoyed the Bane Island series, including its newest entry, The Buried. The island’s eerie and at times suffocating nature makes the perfect backdrop for thrilling gothic tales.

Lisa Childs pens characters I simultaneously mistrust and root for until they ultimately feel like friends. Ones I want to keep returning to and undoubtedly will. The spine-tingling setting, riveting writing, and blend of romance and mystery ensured that I’ll revisit these stories in the future.

While each installment has its own mystery, due to the number of characters and an overarching thread, I would recommend reading this series in order.

Although all the questions have now been answered, I’m not ready to say goodbye to this fictional corner of Maine and would love to see more mysteries set on Bane Island. Childs has created a world ripe with possibilities.

If like me, you enjoy stories that lean toward 75% mystery and 25% romance, give these a try! Readers should be prepared for some strong language.

Here is another installment in the saga of the old mental hospital on Bane Island. Bode and his brother have returned to Bane Island and as the last surviving members of the family have restored the place and opened a spa where the rich and famous can come to escape from the outside world for a period of time. Mae Montgomery, a state trooper, comes to stay at the facility undercover, trying to investigate a missing person and a murder. There are many old tales and mysteries tied to the mental hospital and locals are highly suspicious of the goings on there. There are a lot of interesting twist and turns in this story and I was left wondering who the culprit was until the last moment. This is a great suspense read. I highly recommend this entire series.

I have voluntarily reviewed a copy of this book that I received from NetGalley. All views expressed are only my own honest opinion.

Having no idea that this was an installment in a series I was hooked by the description and dove in headfirst. But then I hit a rock, knocked myself out, put the book down and waited a bit to pick it up again. So this is all on me because maybe if I had read any of the previous installments I might have been able to ease myself into Childs’ style and what was going on. Instead I just got annoyed and more annoyed at the neediness and wrong-footed goings on. There were so many staggering wrong assumptions - did I mention how annoyed I got?! “This time I’m armed” - really ? People go missing, weird noises are all around, people accusing and threatening bodily harm, and now you decide to carry your gun?! To be fair I am going to shoulder it all and just say that the story had great potential but it didn’t work for me and unfortunately it didn’t encourage me to go back and start at the beginning of the series.

The Buried” by Lisa Childs, is an atmospheric, spine tingling book. It takes place on Bane Island, a remote location off the coast of Maine, in a former “insane asylum.” As an avid reader of suspense, I am drawn to this type of book and I was captivated! State trooper Mae Montgomery goes undercover as her deceased sister to an elegant spa now called Halcyon Hall. She is intent on solving a murder. Bode James, native to the island and part of the island’s influential family, had converted the former hospital to what it is today. There is a long history of missing and dead women and accusations fly between the many characters. There is a strong element of romance as well as fear and foreboding in this story. The suspense grips you and keeps on going!

With thanks to Netgalley and Kensington Books for this ARC. My opinions are my own.

The Buried is book #4 in this series about an asylum of girls, in a manor full of evil.
This story is about Mae who is a State Trooper who assumes her sisters identity in order to find our what has happened to some missing woman.
Bode is a single girl Dad and fitness/wellness trainer who knows about Mae and wants to help her find out the truth. Will Mae let him? Can Bode prove to Mae that he's not like his relatives? Follow them on the journey filled with lots of twists, action, beautiful described scenery. You will not be disappointed.
I don't recommend this book as a standalone, I feel in order to know the characters and full story you should read in order.
I thoroughly enjoyed this book and the previous ones, I'm a fan of Lisa Childs and feel her books are well written and thought out.

The Buried is the fourth book in Lisa Childs A Bane Island Series. This addition to the series was worth the wait!! This is a highly suspenseful story filled with many twist and turns. It will keep you on the edge of your seat from start to finish. This is an eerie story, just like the other three, filled with secrets….many dark secrets, violence and all the mystery this series deserves. There is also a lot of romantic suspense in this one that adds to all the fear and evil throughout!! Totally unputdownable!!!! I highly recommend this one and all the other books in this thrilling series. Lisa Childs does not disappoint.

Thank you NetGalley, Zebra Books, Kensington Publishing and Lisa Childs for another compelling book to read and review. The opinions expressed are strictly my own.

3.5 stars. The Buried is definitely a romantic suspense novel.

Bode James and his brother Elijah have converted the ruins of Bainsworth Manor into an exclusive spa. Some say the place is cursed. We know it used to be an insane asylum.

State Trooper Mae Montgomery goes undercover as a spa guest on her own personal time. She is investigating a death and a disappearance.

An anonymous killer narrates a portion of the story and I never figured who it was until the reveal. I felt some creepiness and suspense, especially in the scenes with the coyotes howling plus inside the tunnels.

I won a Kindle copy of this story in a Goodreads giveaway. I did not realize it was #4 in the series. Events and people from past books are alluded to. I felt at a disadvantage coming in at #4. But for a romantic suspense, I thought it was good enough to round up to a 4 instead of down.

NOT BAD NOT GREAT

The story had so many characters, and it was hard to keep them all straight. It was hard to remember, who was related to who. To me, it was kind of a confusing story, and I just kept skipping parts and kept reading knowing I would finally start understanding what was going on. It wasn’t bad it just wasn’t the mystery I would like for it to been not really exciting and I kind of guessed who was the bad person in the beginning. I’ve read better books, but the happy part was the people that fell in love and got to be together and got rid of the curse of all the family. I just kept skipping a bunch of nonsensical writing too many words too many details and finally got through it not bad for the money, but I’ve read better and LISA CHILDS has written better books.

When local a local female detective sets out to solve a murder and find a missing person, she gets more than she could have imagined. An attraction develops between her and the man she first thought was the main suspect; an older relative and his caretaker prove to be worthy adversaries and she finds her own life and that of her love interest in danger. The island is remote, the intrigue is set in a former sanitorium turned exclusive resort and there is mystery behind every person and every wall. Read this to find out how the mystery is solved and the story behind the secrets of the island mansion. Thanks to #netGalley#The Buried for the opportunity to read and review this book.

Thank you Netgalley and Kensington Books for the chance to read an advance copy of The buried by Lisa Childs. This is the 4th book in the Bane Island suspense series; I did not realize this was a continuing series until I started reading, but had no problem following the story. Romantic suspense is one of my favourite genres to read, and I enjoyed it so much I plan to go back and read the previous stories. The buried has a gothic feel to it, taking place at a former insane asylum off the coast of Maine, and has plenty of twists to keep you reading.

Excellent blend of action, characterization, setting, and twisty plot.

The story begins in media res, in the middle of the story as it should.

Bode is the best kind of unreliable narrator. And Mae is the FMC we all need.

"He moved, then. Suddenly. He literally swept her off her feet."

Swoon.

Best line of this book? "Family was so much more than DNA. Family was acceptance and love... She loved them all."
