The Third Fate

Rate this book
~ 'One Fate be granted mortal man, used for evil or good as the inner voice directs. Alas, the divine spark draws the eyes of the Fates, the Second Fate sparingly gifted by their hands. Be warned offspring of the gods; guard your gifting well. For if the Third Fate be unleashed, the soul lays bare before one so touched by the gods.' ~

Cautious and quiet by nature, Paige Kinnell watches life unfold from the sidelines, maintaining her simple existence as a shield to hide behind. But underneath her shy, careful ways, Paige senses a disconnect with the world around her, indulging instead her ever curious interest in the legend and lore of time nearly forgotten.

One chance encounter with an ancient of the undead begins an unraveling of reality as Paige knows it, leaving her to sort through dreams and enchantments, discovering along the way that one's Fate can be mere illusion, and that the consequences of opening her heart to another may cost dearly.

Cael Maccinnis, the handsome Highlander she's met, seems the answer to every unspoken longing of her heart, even as he awakens dark, secret desires buried within her soul. As strange and unnerving changes begin occurring in her mind and body, Paige has no choice but to face her life's unnatural turn and confront the frightening implications. For within Paige's past a secret lay dormant, hidden even from her. This truth, guarded well and wielded by the Fates themselves, becomes the catalyst invoking the power of The Third Fate.

Paige is a shy librarian who spends her free time steeped in the lore of the ancient Celts rather than living it up like other young women her age. Her world is turned upside down when she meets Cael, a vampire with a tragic past. Soon Paige finds herself not just studying the lore she so loves, but living it in this sexy new paranormal romance.

I'm a long time lover of vampires, but lately I've been feeling the whole thing has been a bit over done. So what convinced me to pick this one up? Two words; vampire highlander. That's right not only is Cael a sexy vamp, but he's also got the whole super alpha Highlander attitude. *swoon!* There was just no way I was going to pass up a tantalizing concept like that! I have to say Cael had quite a few lines that made me shiver.

"Shh... lass," he crooned. "Let me love ye; I was meant to love ye."

Although shy and a bit subdued, Paige never hesitates to stand up for herself and fight for those she loves. I adored that about her! She had her plate full with finding out her half-vampire heritage and becoming a target. I can't stand a wimpy heroine and was very pleased with Paige's ability to evolve throughout the story even as she was going through her transition from human to vampire.

"I cannot keep running.

The thought was freeing because she realized that she did not want to run from this man.

Ye couldna escape me if ye tried lass."

Although I enjoyed Paige and Cael I felt like the one downside to this story was that there was so much going on. I didn't get near as much time as I would have liked with the hero and heroine. There were so many side stories going on with secondary characters that I became easily distracted from the main story. I think this story would have been a 4 star for me if it had been a bit less cluttered.

In the same breath, the plethora of intriguing secondary characters did spark my imagination and I found myself wanting to know more about each of them, but within their own stories. Luckily, I got the chance to interview Nadja and ask after any potential sequels or novellas. She confirmed that these characters have also had her brain spinning and she is tossing around some ideas! I can't wait to spend some more time with those mischievous Garrow brothers!

Although this book in itself wasn't amazing for me, I still enjoyed it. I see a lot of potential for future tales within this lore and look forward to reading them! I always say you have to give any series a two to three book chance before passing judgment. Thus far my final ruling is Nadja Notariani is a romance author to look out for! I plan to follow her releases with giddy anticipation.

The Third Fate

So I have to be honest: I'm not a "vampire" girl. I didn't get in to Twilight. I never really saw the point of the Vampire Diaries, and while I like True Blood, in the end I could take it or leave it. When I picked up Nadja Notariani's (try saying that name five times fast!) book, The Third Fate as part of an IO Tour, I wasn't sure if it would be my cup of tea. After all, the male protagonist is…you guessed it…a vampire! However, he's a Scottish vampire with a sexy accent that gives him total bonus points! It was a little like reading a character who could have been in Diana Gabaldon's Outlander series.

Of course, I would never let such a thing sway my opinion on a book though…at least, not much! So when I tell you that I really enjoyed the tale of The Third Fate, even with the vampire element, you know I mean it.

Here's the low down on the story as printed on the book:

Nice, huh?

I found this book to be a fast read with lyrical prose and vivid descriptions of its hero/heroine. Paige and Cael are definitely well developed characters who evolve and change as the story progresses. In a book with paranormal elements that evolution is probably one of the most important things an author can do to keep the story moving forward. Unlike some novels where the two lovers never really learn anything about themselves, Notariani does a good job of avoiding this trap and investing the reader's interest in their fates.

The Third Fate has some sex scenes in it that are fairly explicit. If this is not your thing, you either want to skip over those parts or skip this read. Sex scenes aren't the easiest thing to write, and it's hard to make the characters not sound cheesy or stilted when writing sex scene dialogue. However, the author manages to make everything sound natural and I didn’t flinch at anything.

My only criticism would be that I wanted to know more about a few of the villains in the book, especially Gwendolyn. She is a character with lots of "bad guy" potential that could have been explored a bit further. Like I said, this is a fast read. A few more action scenes with Gwendolyn would have kept the reader on their toes and rooting for Paige and Cael even more.

Best part of this book: The Fates that control everyone's world are not your typical three sisters we see so often in mythology or other stories. They are kids! Makes total sense to me as I sometimes think that it has to be a child doling out the craziness in my life!

Be sure and check out Nadja Notariani's book, The Third Fate.

I did not read the description of this book before I started read. If I had, I probably would have put off reading this book as long as possible. Why? You ask. It is because it has vampires in the plot. I have nothing against vampire books they are just not my cup of tea. However, I did not know it and after reading the first chapter, I was drawn to this book. I did not care about the vampires or anything else. The plot intrigued me I wanted to know more.

This book starts out with Paige; she is an assistant librarian at the main library in Glasgow. Paige is one of those quiet always around to lean on, always helps and does extra work. Paige has a gift but does not know about that gift yet. It is a gift that she at first refuses and does not want and then she turns around and embraces the gift with everything she has.

Cael is the other main character in this book. I so love this name. It has an ancient sound when pronouncing
the name. Cael here is the vampire in the book. He is an old ancient vampire. The book does not go into detail how old he might possibly be, but from the few references, he is quite old.

When reading this book I felt carried away to Glasgow, Edinburgh and the Highlands. I so enjoy a book that can sweep me away to a different continent or even a different time. It helps to release the stress and worry from the day, relaxes the mind and sometimes offers comfort when we need it most.

This book does not carry the reader into the past or the future. It is present day. However, the book is well written with a strong plot. The characters had a great love story that was amazing.

One thing I do not understand is how so many different vampire books differ. I know all authors have different ideas. Nevertheless, this was the best vampire book I have ever read. It did not contain vampires feeding off humans and then the human’s turns in to a vampire. I guess that is why I am not into vampire books they are usually feeding off humans and turning them into vampires. However, this book was different. It is not the average vampire book.

Protected by her Aunt, the only mother she's ever known, Paige Kinnell has always known that she was different. Preferring to live a quiet and cautious life, she's content with how well things are going for her. Her cousin's, unfortunately, have other ideas. They refuse to allow Paige the right to remain within her solitary existence and do everything they can to draw her out of her shell. Much to her chagrin, she finds herself agreeing to just about anything in order to get them off her back.

Walking home one night after one such gathering, she comes across a man who makes her question the very world she lives in. He incites her passion and makes her crave what she's never known. Against her better judgment, she allows herself to succumb to his charms. She awakens to find herself alone, believing that everything she felt the night before was just a dream.

Drawn to the beautiful woman, Cael Maccinnis has a hard time in understanding as to why he's drawn to Paige from the moment he lays eyes on her. The girl is clearly mortal, yet there's an ethereal quality about her that peaks his interest further. Determined to discover the secrets surrounding her true nature, he sets off to find the answers to the very questions he harbors inside.

Never once has he taken into account the consequences of his actions. His only goal is to right all wrongs committed against him and his beloved, but first he must contend with a very irate Council and the mischievous Fates. Only then can he allow himself to hope for a brighter future with Paige standing by his side.

The premise of the story hooks the reader off the bat, although there are way too many character key points in which to keep track of as you read along. Granted, they're all pivotal to the story itself. I do feel that the book has a few minor editing issues that need cleaning up, but other than the story was quite enjoyable.

I know I'm pushing it since I just finished the book (haven't been able to read much lately) but boy am I ever glad that I did sign up for this book's blog tour. Speaking of blog tours, I'd like to thank Shauni and Vickie at IO Tours for putting this tour together as well as the fabulous author Nadja Notariani for picking IO Tours :)

Now that the pleasantries are out of the way I daresay I should get to the review part don't you think?

Having just finished the book it's still very fresh in my mind so I have that benefit at my disposal. The book was really good. I loved how the author chose to do vampires with a Scottish twist and a male lead who is a highlander as well as a vampire *swoon*!

I found that the author's writing style was great, you can tell that she worked really hard to word the story carefully and keep the writing style consistant, fast paced and best of all it wasn't repetitive. Like I said in the preceeding paragraph I really enjoyed the author's take on the vampire legend and I felt that the fact the the book includes druids was great, since I love reading about the druids fictional or non.

I also really liked Cael and Paige's romance, for me that was the best part. While I say that I have to mention that the book has a fair amount sex in it so if you like sweeter romances this may not be for you but as always give it a try and go into the book with an open mind. I loved how while Cael is a bit of an alpha male jerk he's very tender when it comes to Paige who can be a bit of a little spitfire in my opinion as well.

Over all I was very impressed by the author's writing, and I would have no problem recommending the paranormal romance to anyone. I think it will especially appeal to those who love the genre and those that like their paranormal's a little hotter.

Really great book, really complex, and lots of happy endings, though I wish we could've had more on those happy endings, that would've been nice. But great book, really enjoyed it!

*Full review to come 28/05/12*

This was an awesome book! Very complex, from the whole "Fate" set up, and how it was introduced, well, loved that, and to the problems in the vampire hierarchy, well, they were understandable to what I could understand, political tactics that are carried out by our own governments as far as spy novels and political novels have lead me to believe!

The characters were believable from mousy Paige growing into herself, and strong and confidant Cael with a great, if sometimes hard to understand Scottish accent. They had their strengths and their weaknesses, they weren't perfect, but they worked together for the important parts, and fought against the unwelcome parts. And all the conflict was delicious!

The plot had its twists and turns, from characters manipulating each other, and plots and plans, overheard conversations, and uncontrollable feelings. The characters, like the bad guys, acted in their best interests, and the good guys acted in the interests of all, and the clash was explosive, and rocked the conditions of the vampire world.

I would've liked to know more about the Third Fate, and what it was really about, I know what Paige could do with it, but more of the background, well, that would've been nice to know, like what's the difference between the 3 fates, what makes the 3rd fate so dangerous, and so rare, well, that'd be interesting to know, especially since it's a driving plot factor, and the title of the book!

Other then that, the book was excellent! Great characters and romance, great plot, and yeah, just check out this book!! It was really enjoyable!

Paige is a shy assistant librarian that harbors a gift that she is unaware of. Cael is an ancient Highland vampire. A chance meeting between Paige and Cael starts Paige down the road of the unknown, unraveling the mysteries hidden deep in Paige's soul. The development and evolution of the characters throughout the novel is excellent.

"The Third Fate" is an original paranormal romance that is so easy to get lost in. The descriptions provided of each scene are so well thought out and vivid without going overboard or becoming too wordy. The romance involved isn't overbearing and the intimate scenes are written with taste. The author, Ms. Notariani works other story lines within the pages too, giving the novel substance.

I'm not familiar with the mythological trio known as the Fates. This novel intrigued me so much that I did a little investigating into this subject. While not generally a fan of wiki sites, I did peruse one site with a lot of information: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Moirae. I also found another site describing the Fates (Moirae): http://www.theoi.com/Daimon/Moirai.html. I love it when a book invokes the need to do additional research on the subject matter, allowing me to continue relishing the book well beyond the final pages.

I'm glad I had the opportunity to read this wonderful novel by Nadja Notariani.

I know that Vampire books seem to be all the rage, but this one was something special. Oh, and did I mention hot, hot, hot? Wow, who wouldn’t want to love a vampire with all that supernatural beauty/handsome and sex appeal. But I loved the Scottish Highland Druid twist in this book. I am amazed with the ability of the author to take these two very different backgrounds and stories and blend them seamlessly into this passionate, engrossing tale.

My daughter and I have been cataloging the “perfect man” by taking the attributes of our favorite people and putting them together. So far we have dance like Fred Astaire, sing like Frank Sinatra, voice like James Earl Jones, butt and arms of Huge Jackman, chest of Orlando Bloom, eyes like Paul Newman, look like a cross between Sean Connery of Bond fame and George Clooney, hair like Pierce Bronson, and sense of humor and love of mate like Bob Hope. Ok, except for being brooding like Wolverine from the movies, this is how I picture Cael from this book. I feel swoon-worthy just thinking about him and that’s before I read all the hot, yummy scenes in the book. Yep, definitely adult only.

I give this one 4.5 out of 5 clouds and a heat rating of 8.5 chili peppers. Ooo-la-la. Pick this one up for that scintillating read.

I read a lot of paranormal romances, but this one was a little different. Although there was a wonderful love story involving a vampire and the woman he loved (who also was more than meets the eye), there were always other threads running through the story. And the whole thing revolved around the Fates, about which I had never read anything before. That was definitely an interesting little twist. The one thing that stood out in this story, the thing that blew me away, was the first major love scene. It was so beautifully written that it took my breath away. I really enjoyed this book.

Breathtaking. From cover to cover this extremely well written story transported me to a mythical and romantic universe filled with goosepimple and curl your toes passion. Cael or Malcolm are welcome in my dreams anytime. Paige's transformation, very well done, you can't help but root for her. This is definately my favorite work from this author and looking forward to many more.

I have read a little on the third fate already, an author or two wove it into their story line and perhaps that was why I signed up for this tour. The sheer fascination of someone who would be able to wield such great power.

I think one of the best aspects of the book was that the main character was a librarian, a shy and meek woman whose personality is quite common in people I pass or communicate with in my day to day life. It made it very easy to relate to the characters and fall further into the story as if they were friends of my own relating their life events.

I am also a sucker for accents, in men and women they are absolutely to die for. Yes it is girlie of me but I just fall head over heals when it comes to an accent. I know there have been plenty of stories where they just throw the accent in there without any research or thought put into it. It is just something there to make the character different and often it doesn't fit leaving an awkward feel to the scene. Luckily this was not the case for the Third Fate. The accent flowed smoothly and if I closed my eyes and pictured the words I could just picture a strapping Scottish man purring out that brogue as he spoke.

Unfortunately with all the pros's there was also some cons, one of them being how patchy the entire story felt. Especially in the beginning, I actually had a hard time keeping up with all the switching and being unable to tell the difference between past and present. It was almost enough to make me put it down before finishing it, much as I hate to do it. It also got to feel a little rushed towards the end, Everything just fell into place without any detail. Some of the things I wished would have had more if not turning it into a sequel.

I loved the story idea however, it is one that kept me entertained through the entire thing.

Review:

"The Third Fate" by Nadja Notariani was a good read especially if you are a Vampire lover who would like a 'Scottish Highland' to read. This mythical paranormal romance was sexy and tastefully written...especially that first major love scene. The "plot had many twist and turns from from characters manipulating each other, and plots and plans, overheard conversations, and uncontrollable feelings." And this whole thing that revolves around the Fates .... very interesting like which I had never read anything like it before. Two characters that were simply amazing and well developed by this author was Page Kinnell(with the gift) and Cael Maccinnis (Vampire). Now, to find out more about "The Third Fate" you must pick up the beautifully written novel to see how this author brings out this discovery to the reader....she does it well!

If you are looking for a good paranormal sexy read...Ms. Notariani's "The Third Fate" would be recommended to you as a good read.
