Pas pour moi, la couverture est sublime, l'auteur intéressant du moins en interview/vidéos mais à l'écrit ce n'est pas pour moi, son style familier ''m'a soulé'' toutes ces questions métaphysiques certes intéressantes mais qui font diversion et diluent l'idée alourdissant le texte et les chapitres. Ces tentatives cool et de pop-culture puis le mélange scientifique pour moi une lecture lourde ennuyante et crevante même grosse déception presque énerver envers ce livre qui aurait pu aurait du être bon finalement j'ai appris trop peu de choses sur les Néandertaliens que des divagations existentielle qui tournent en rond sans jamais réussir à "m'entrancer". Dommage grosse déception, échappe à 1 étoile car le livre est surement okay ou bon mais ma lecture pour moi ce ne fût que mauvais long et pire ennuyeux.

This is a fascinating account of the archaeological evidence collected to understand the history and, ultimately, the extinction of Neanderthals. The book finishes with speculation about how we Sapiens may eventually face extinction. As the author says more than once, "This is a sad book." The author is one of the leading authorities on the subject and summarizes his and others' research. I enjoyed learning about this other group of hominids and their relationship to us Sapiens. The author writes in a very philosophical, thoughtful, albeit slow-moving, style. I recommend this book if you have an interest in human natural history or the philosophy of science.

This book disappointed me as I was expecting more science and less speculation- he even says about looking precisely at the facts and then goes off somewhere else and postulates a theory of cultural spheres and how they can implode or go into the shadows. There’s a whole digression about African cities being a place of cages of imploded spheres. Phew- I sort of get from this how the Neanderthal groups may have felt when they came across Sapiens, but really the book is not put together well enough for me to get more than that Neanderthals died out with a dull whimper. There’s the excitement when Thorin (last Neanderthal?) was found in a cave entrance and the research to date his remains and the tools and culture found with him. I was hoping there for a map to show other groups found because they were described by names/places that I didn’t know and then the evidence that their tools might have been made by Sapiens anyway- I think. The book ended with a dull whimper too!!

Un livre passionnant dans la description du processus de découverte des reste d'un néandertaliens, de l'analyse de ces restes a l'aide de nombreuses techniques physique et génétiques avancées et de surtout de logique historique (ce qu'appreandent mal les sciences dures). Mais le livre est aussi une réflexion sur l'alterité et sur les biais qui entravent notre perception du monde. Les paradigmes de khun ?

Leí el libro anterior "El neandertal al desnudo" y me pareció Exelente. En cuanto a este me pareció no tan bueno como el anterior. La primera mitad del libro es exelente y apasionante, luego la "cuestión filosófica" no esta bien planteado. Se va "desdibujando", se entiende a dónde va pero la conclusión queda muy "diluida" al final, por lo menos para mí. En la segunda parte del "último neandertal" me refiero, no se la juega, venia muy bien explicado todo, pero el es arqueólogo, no filósofo, trata de "elevarse" pero queda como un extraterrestre que viene a juzgarnos, eso me pareció a mí. No entendí la conclusión, puede que haya leído mal, pero no entendí repito. Igual es un libro que Volvería a leer. El tema es apasionante. Muy recomendable Igual...

This book puts me to sleep. The author is a master at extending an article, at most, into a book by long repetitive ramblings. I found myself skipping page after page trying to get to the meat of the matter. The subject is interesting, but the lengthy stream of consciousness of his writing was quite off-putting. I was hoping for something more academic in it's approach.

Avendo l'aspettativa di un saggio che raccontasse informazioni sui Neandertal in base alle varie scoperte scientifiche fatte fin'ora, mi ha lasciata perplessa in molti punti. Il tono è molto lirico e spesso si fa più filosofia sulla natura dell'essere umano e sulla morte invece di parlare dei Neandertal.
Le riflessioni sono comunque interessanti, anche quelle con cui ero profondamente in disaccordo.

Sarei curiosa di sapere se la mia opinione sarebbe diversa avendo potuto leggere per primo il suo primo libro (che invece non è ancora stato tradotto) dato che viene citato spesso nel testo e sembra concentrarsi di più su ciò che sappiamo dei Neandertal, quasi come se questo fosse un seguito?

This could be a superb book, but I genuinely would prefer to read it in French and translate where I can’t understand it, than this English version. It manages to keep the words but somehow obscures the sense in translation. Feels as if it was pushed through Google translate word by word, rather than fully moved languages with the different word choices and grammatical patterns. It was worth three stars because Ludo S and the international team really have a truly incredible story to tell - but learn French and read the original 😬
