After the Storm

Rate this book
This is the erotic romance version of the romance novella, All I've Ever Needed.

Natalie Harding can't believe that her absolutely gorgeous work colleague Stephano Romano is attracted to her. But after one unexpected, totally hot Friday evening encounter on her office desk of all places, she's convinced that maybe he returns the feeling she's harboured for him in the fifteen months they have worked together.

Her euphoria doesn't last for long, though. The very next Monday she watches in shock as he kisses the young woman who drops him off to work at the office and then saunters in looking as though she had kept him up all night.

Is there an innocent explanation for the kiss and Stephano's bleary-eyed appearance? Did his father suffer chest pains and have to be rushed to the hospital where the doctors kept him in all night for close monitoring? Or is it just an excuse Stephano's using to cover his night of pleasure with another woman?

This novella is 30,141 words in length.

I'm a British writer who has always been fascinated by the concept of true love transcending the boundaries of race and colour. I like to touch on some of the issues each couple faces on their journey to their HEA in a fairly light-handed way that provokes thought but hopefully doesn't detract from readers' enjoyment - after all, most are looking for romantic escape, not political debate.

My stories are set in London and have a British flavour, but as the vast majority of my readers so far have been American, I've tried to accommodate them by using American English in my books where possible. The British also read a lot of American literature and have become accustomed to both spellings.

This tale left me curious about Natalie and Stephano's beginning and what ifs.

How I hate cliffhangers!

I was not expecting to enjoy this book as much as I did. When I first downloaded months ago, it was free and I thought I was only getting a short story, the first part of a novella series. Then I finished it and went to find the rest of the books on Amazon only to discover they'd been combined into one volume, which I appreciated since I was intrigued enough by the short story I read to want to know more. I downloaded the rest of the story and I'm glad I did.

This story was intriguing and I devoured most of it in two sittings without stopping. It was easy and not overly drawn out, just what I was in the mood for at the time. What I liked most was that although race was an issue this interracial couple faced, it wasn't the main issue and it wasn't exaggerated or impressed upon too much. The two had other things to work through...things that people of all walks of life can identify with, and I appreciated that. Particularly when it came to Natalie's story. While I am not of Trinidadian heritage, being African American I have witnessed the very same thing she went through when it comes to the darkness of her skin and the texture of her hair. It is the same in our culture as well, the uplifting of those with certain types of features and the tearing down of those who don't meet that standard. I liked watching her gain confidence and learn to allow Stephano to truly love her. It was hard at first, and Natalie often played head games that would annoy, but don't women? Girls like Natalie exist, and a woman who had been the victim of abuse would not be an easy woman to love, not at first. I liked the realism of that in their relationship. And Stefano was more than up to the task, with his sexy, Italian self!

The writing was quite good, and the main strength of the book, although in some places I wish the information given about the past had been less of an info dump. It kind of stole focus from the current story in some places, but not enough for me to lose interest. The info was pertinent to the story, but it wasn't always presented in a way that made the story flow. Also, I felt the ending of some scenes was a bit abrupt and choppy and could have been a bit better.

Despite those tiny little things, Jewel Moore has found a fan in me and I plan to check out more of her work. If it's anything like this book (or better), I can't wait for more!

I really liked this story of Stephano & Natalie. I am glad to see that Jewel Moore will be writing more on this & extending the short story.

***SPOILER ALERT***

After The Storm (Part 1)
As with most guys Stephano is clueless as to what he has done to make Natalie so upset. He should have told her what his weekend entailed or invited her along. Natalie has no idea what to think except she was a quicky at the office. What will happen after the weekend & they have to face each other again in the office. Stay tuned to find out in the next story.

And The Rain (Part 2)
We learn about Natalie & her past sexual partner, Michael. He was physically & verbally abusive and a cheater. We can see where Natalie feels almost ashamed of wanting sex & intamacy. We also learn about her hesitation of telling her dad especially of Stephano & being in a mixed race relationship. You get to understand her relationship with her brother Nathan & feel how close they are. Stephano is still very interested in making a relationship work with Natalie but is unsure how to go about it. He askes her for a proper date & gets the ball rolling.

Comes The Calm (Part 3)
We her about Stephano's family. We get to see both families acceptance or not. And we get the nice happy ending that we all love.

Mixed emotions

First book to be read by the author Jewelle Moore. Honestly this book would have received one star, but i loved the moments between Stephano and Natalie. However this book seems all over the place. At the very beginning they sleep together. She's mad because after they sleep together he doesn't invite her out, nor they spend time together. After that she witnesses Stephano kissing another woman. So instead of confronting him about it, you sulk, then two weeks later they sleep with each other again!! You wait until after that encounter to confront him (eye roll) . Then the writer has you jumping into the past, mind you it will be a minute before you realize that is what is happening. Jump forward they're having sex again, and again and again. Somehow in the midst of that there is conversations ( not really) of them getting to know each other. Finally she discoves she's pregnant ( after their first encounter). However she doesn't take a test, let alone tell him, but after a month of still spending time together Stephano figures out she's pregnant. Now they're getting married? Like nothing was established about them being in a relationship, they're just having sex, but now they're getting married. Like this book was all over the place in my opinion.

It was an interesting book. Very short though and I hate that. But it did bring to light abuse and what Natalie went through in college was horrid. To be treated like trash was bad enough but to be told he didn't want to be seen with her? Nasty bastard. She held onto Michael's criticisms of her and it made it hard for her to trust.

Stephano, her work colleague - hey what I say? He had an attraction to her from the beginning. When she undressed in front of him on their official first date after she brought him home and he said Perfezione? My underwear exploded into little tiny pieces of cloth. He was sexy, and he made her want to be very, very BAD. Their first encounter was on her desk at work. Even though I think that's not a good thing to do - YUM.

Every time he said cara, I felt like he was talking to me. I'm a sucker for foreign men. Anybody know one? Sorry, back to the review.

Good book just wish it was longer so the characters could be even more developed than they were.

Natalie Harding has worked hard to get where she is with the advertising agency she works for. Hired directly out of university, she has had a lot to prove and she can’t do it by succumbing to her attraction to her sexy colleague Stephano.

Even if she is watching his every move like a starving woman before a feast.

Stephano Romano has been secretly longing to do the naughtiest things to his coworker. But she’s a bit quiet and reserved and probably has a boyfriend. While working late one Friday, she hurts her hand just enough for him to feel justified to “assist” in her recovery. However, with the first brush of her skin against his, all sanity goes out the window and before either of them realized why they were doing what they were doing, a moment of genuine concern turns into unplanned heated passion and later, a cold shoulder when Natalie decides to beat him to the “Let’s Just Be Friends” speech.

She’d rather go home and read a romance than sit around wondering when or if he’d ever call her.

Ticked with his friend Harry for deciding to get married the one weekend he’d rather stay and get to know each and every delicious inch of Natalie better, Stephano plans to exchange numbers and sow the seeds to start a relationship with her, but can’t when she makes a mad dash for the taxi he’d hoped to share with her on the way home.

After being in a relationship with a man she discovered merely thought of her as his “side piece,” Natalie wants to try her hand at being in a no-strings attached type relationship, rather than risk being hurt again. However, the last thing Stephano wants is a string-free relationship.

“After the Storm” is a quick read for a day when you don’t know what you want to read outside of it being interracial. Outwardly the heroine appears to be a strong, cool, in-control of herself woman who’s got her future before her. But, a past relationship with her abusive ex has negatively impacted her outlook on relationships and more importantly herself. The author covers her past relationship to such an extent that as a reader you are likely to find yourself thinking, “Is her ex going to show up in the story and start stalking her? If not, can we get back to her and Stephano?”

Stephano, has his own issues. His last relationship was equally as disastrous. But it’s not focused on to the point of annoyance. In fact, he recognizes the signs of jealousy for what they are and helps her see that he isn’t like her ex.

The story as a whole explores the after effects of abuse, self-acceptance and the color barrier within the Jamaican/Trinidadian/Black community; as well as the poor treatment immigrants can receive when they arrive in a new country without a family and a support system in place.

But despite all of the themes and such, “After The Storm” is either too long due to excessive backstory and filler, or too short due to the author not fully exploring the hero and heroine’s developing relationship.

It’s a pleasant enough story, but Natalie and Stephano spend very little time on the page together that doesn’t involve them sleeping together or in their mutual workplace. There is a non-erotic version of this story titled, “All I Ever Need,” for those readers who aren’t into seeing what goes on behind the characters bedroom doors. But I fail to imagine what those readers will encounter since so much of what I read in this book seems to involve them in bed. But then again, perhaps that version has more scenes that develop their relationship, giving readers a better rounded story.

What IMRR….

Likes:
It takes place in England!

It could’ve just as easily have taken place anywhere in the world, but the subtle hints of English influence gave the story a nice flavor.

I also like the fact that the author created a tamer version of this book titled, “All I Ever Needed” for readers who aren’t into reading anything spicy. However, I do worry about possible confusion on the part of readers thinking that this is a new story.

Dislikes: The amount of unnecessary back story and just plain old fashioned telling was virtually unbearable. Numerous times I found myself rolling my eyes and exclaiming with exasperation, “I. Don’t. CARE!”

There were a few grammar issues. But with the overabundance of information about her past relationship…which I understand was necessary to a point. But only to a POINT….it was easy to ignore a grammar slip-up here or there.

*moans to self as her eyes spin in her head*

Too…Much…Back Story…..

IMRR’s Favorite Scene:

***The Obligatory SPOILER ALERT***

About midway through the story, after we’ve learned more than we probably should’ve at that point about her past relationship with her ex-boyfriend Michael, she’s in a store buying insanely expensive lingerie when she overhears him with his “showpiece/publicly acceptable” girlfriend, Melissa. Her initial thought is to put everything back and leave before he sees her. However, his reaction to seeing her is not what she expects and at that point in the story you can almost see the light bulb over her head turn on as she ignores his panicked look and introduces herself to his girlfriend. She subtly issues a threatening reminder to her ex about her brother’s threat to kill him; then returns to her shopping with a spring in her step.

Honestly, up until this scene I could barely tolerate the heroine and her milquetoast mindset. But her recognizing her abusive ex for the wimpy punk that he was, was the first moment I felt I could respect the heroine enough to continue reading the story.

Not baD

New author for me. Got a decent storyline/background through in a great way. I was not as excited about Stephano. He was imo a bit of an a$%hole in how he dealt with Natalie from their first encounter. I didn't like how he assumed and treated her. He did not communicate very well, but acted like she was the problem. With the story we are given about her background, some of this seemed a bit much. Maybe a longer book not so rushed to feel in so many blanks to help us understand him more may have helped

Stephano & Natalie

There's was a cute story. Co workers who found love. They weren't doing but the made sure to be working at the same time.

One of those times lead to sex on the desk and then a real relationship was formed.

One of the things I dislike about romance novels is the speculation instead of asking questions, just getting angry because of your assumptions. Hopefully one day we'll have a novel without all the "extra".

The cover matches the characters!!

Finally, the cover & occasional pictures throughout the story actually match the characters in the story! It’s always so disappointing when the cover is completely opposite from characters or they were it’s obvious their two different pictures fused as one. The story was good. I appreciate the steamy love scenes especially in the beginning.

I loved it!

I loved it! I loved the story line, the characters, the romance, love, communication,. The only thing I didn't like was the length of the book, it was too short. I want and need more.

Love the characters and the passion between Natalie and Stephano. Admittedly it got wordy at times and felt overshadowed by excessive backstory, but I enjoyed the story and its ending. Hope more's to come

Short and sweet

After the storm is a quick read with enough heat and drama o keep you engaged. I like Stephano and wonder how the story would feel from primarily his perspective. I loved the 2 additional stories, both sparked my interest.

Seriously, more than half the book was straight narration! I didn’t experience these event; I was told they took place and when each character thought.

The story is not bad but the writing style was not my favorite.

Steamy and cute.. very relatable. Pretty realistic in my opinion and I've had one or two steamy office hookups.

Read this book in one night.

Sad when it came to her past, moving on from an abusive former lover to a steamy office hookup.. it can be extremely challenging.
You're rebuilding your self-esteem while trying to trust in not only men again but yourself.
It's a bummer when you can't trust your instincts and your own judgment when it comes to putting your safety and heart on the line - you certainly don't want to risk it.
However when that new person who surprises you, it becomes scary to want to trust in them merely trust in yourself that it's not all in your head.
Thought the ending was cute and I can definitely see it being someone's reality.

I understood why it was called 'After the Storm' because after that ex boyfriend- who I wouldn't even give a second thought or glance ... she certainly deserved someone sweet who respected her and not some one time hit-it-then-quit-it type of situation.. I Like how it told from both point of views... clearly they couldn't just meet at some bar because then that would be a trast cliche because these days when you ask a wife where she met her husband she says at a former job.

Overall, I really enjoyed reading this one.

Good read

Good read

The storyline is great. It keeps you interested. I just wish that it was a little longer. I would like to know what the sex of the baby was. Lol! I would like to know if the baby's birth would change her father's attitude towards Stephano. Great book.

What happens in the work place stays in the work place is the motto for this book. I liked Stephano and Natalie's brother Nathan. Nathan was awesome. I just couldn't see how she could fall for this so called ex when she didn't even know where he lived. Can we say Naive? But overall the book was cute. Ending felt rushed a little but cute story.

I just didn't care for this. It hit all the wrong buttons for me and it came real close to being a DNF. It could be my hormones right now, but the urge to smack the heroine is real strong. I'm glad it was free.
