New York Times and USA Today bestseller Vicki Lewis Thompson believes love makes the world go around and laughter makes the trip worth taking. The recipient of RWA’s Nora Roberts Lifetime Achievement Award and the author of more than ninety books, Vicki pioneered a new kind of romance hero with Nerd in Shining Armor. Following the success of her nerd stories, Vicki launched a boisterous paranormal series featuring a matchmaking witch and wizard, an ADD dragon named George, and a black cat inspired by her own precocious feline, Eve.
Well I'm giving The Nerd Who Loves Me 3 Stars. At first I was really enjoying it, maybe even more then the first book. I was so happy because for a while there this book was well on it's way to being an cute 5 star read for me. I mean it pretty much had it all. A sexy hero with a good heart and a protective streak a mile wide, a sexy Vegas showgirl dancer, an adorably precocious little boy, and drunken no good ex trying to steal said boy, and the hero's sweet mom and step father being understanding, accepting, and supportive. What's not to love?
But then I started thinking why isn't the hero coming off as nerdy. I mean this is a book about Nerdy heroes, but this hero Harry was more of an average Joe than a nerd. Yes he was an Accountant and he wore glasses, but other than that he didn't give me the nerd vibe I was looking for. So I took a star off for that. Don't get me wrong Harry was great if you like super protective, over 6ft, sexy, brown hair brown eye sex gods with a enormous penises. But I was looking for a nerd, a sexy nerd, but a nerd!
I liked the heroine for most of the book. I felt she was a great mom, she was sweet, smart playful and sexy. I was totally on board with her until about the 85-90% mark when she went and did something that made me lose a ton of respect for her. See her son's father is from a super rich family. He is also a loser alcoholic that gets mean when he is drunk and he also gambles. Her and her son ran states away to start a new life and get away from him because he was getting so mean he was scaring their son. This asshat didn't want anything to do with his son. Then out of the blue he shows up and kicks in her door causing Harry and her little boy to climb out a window and down a tree to get away from him. Now I tell you all that to tell you that she then decides at the 85-90% mark to talk to her ex to see what he wants. What does he want well he needs to show his dad that he has a son and is married to get his inheritance so he wants her to marry him so he can get money. And here is the kicker she, who is in love with Harry our hero, decides that she will get back with her ex because well he has a lot of money and she could give her son a better life. Really? Your child is scared to death of his drunken mean father that wanted nothing to do with him, you are in love with another man and he loves you too oh and he's not poor or anything I mean Harry makes good money but you just have to marry the alcoholic gambling douche bag Really? Fuck at that point I was just pissed
And Poor Harry he was just gonna stand by and let her go off and marry her ex without saying Hey I love you marry me I'll take care of you. Nope just gonna give up. The epilogue was sweet but even it couldn't bring back my happy smile after that bullshit. So because I did enjoy most of the book I gave it 3 stars, but I was mad enough I wanted to give it 2. I hope the next one is better!
Her: He’s sexy, and I haven’t been laid in 5 years, even though I am a Vegas showgirl with huge tits, I am a puritanical single mother that uses a vibrator all the time.
Him: Man, I’m glad we are having lots of sex, but there is no future.
Her: He’s got a huge penis, too bad there is no future.
Him: I love her, but there is no possible future together.
Her: I love him, too bad he doesn’t want anything more than good sex.
Reviewed for THC Reviews I had read the first book in Vicki Lewis Thompson's Nerd series about a year ago and can't say that it tickled my funny bone in quite the way I had hoped, so I wasn't entirely sure what to expect when I picked up the next book in the series. Fortunately, I liked The Nerd Who Loved Me quite a bit better than Nerd in Shining Armor. The characters, in general, had a bit more depth, and the heroine, in particular, was much more likable in my opinion. The plot was still pretty light and frothy and required the suspension of disbelief a few times, but in general, I felt it had more credibility. I also appreciated that the story wasn't overburdened with extreme cliches and absurdities. Even though there were some things that I thought could have been better, overall, The Nerd Who Loved Me ended up being a pretty enjoyable read.
I absolutely adore nerdy heroes, so Harry was the cat's meow for me. He's an extremely smart accountant for a Las Vegas casino where he secretly (or so he thinks) watches Lainie's shows every night from a private back table. They also live in the same apartment complex, and when he finds out that Lainie is having baby-sitter issues, he volunteers to watch her son. Harry is wonderful with Dexter, completely connecting with this little whiz-kid on an intellectual level, yet being good with him in a more general way too, which made me believe that he'd make a fabulous father someday. Of course, this gets him up close and personal with Lainie who he has a major crush on, but doesn't think she'd ever consider going out with a nerd like him. Harry is tall and reasonably attractive (what I imagined as cute), but I liked that physically he was more on the average side, nearly blind as a bat without his glasses and no longer buff since he gave up working out. He's also fairly reserved and not given to taking risks or living spontaneously until he gets mixed up in Lainie's life. Harry's just a really sweet guy who is very sympathetic of Lainie's predicament and would do anything to help her out. Once he really starts falling for Lainie, he does have a couple of alpha protective moments when he thinks her life is in danger, but overall Harry is a gentle beta. How could I possibly resist a nerd with a great butt who's an amazing lover? Come to think of it, I can't, since I married one.;-) Hubba, hubba!
In spite of being a showgirl, Lainie didn't come off as being an air-headed bimbo. She actually had some depth of character. She's obviously a wonderful loving mother to Dexter, and has tried to do everything she could to keep him safe and happy. She also recognizes his intelligence and tries to mentally stimulate him as much as possible. I loved that Harry had been starring in Lainie's sexual fantasies for quite a while which I thought showed that attraction, for her, was more than skin deep. Granted she had fallen for a looser like Joey five years before, but she was young and naive and her parents weren't very supportive of her. To me, she was a woman who had made some bad choices in her youth, but now was trying her best to grow up and be a mature adult. The only thing about Lainie that gave me pause was that she seemed a little too quick to give up on a possible life with Harry and give in to Joey's suggestion even though she knew she'd be absolutely miserable and Dexter probably would too, all for the sake of Dexter possibly inheriting a fortune someday from Joey's parents. Part of me understood that she was trying to be a selfless mother, but another part of me knows that there were other options for her. In this respect, I thought she reverted back to her old naiveté, because she obviously had lots of people on her side ready to help in any way they could. Otherwise, Lainie was a very likable heroine.
I liked Harry and Lainie as a couple too. Harry had been having difficulty finding a woman who could satisfy him both intellectually and sexually, and Lainie seemed to fit the bill. She knows how to deal with intelligent people, since she has a child prodigy for a son. She has a photographic memory herself, and physically is the type of beautiful girl that usually floats Harry's boat. I do wish that the intellectual connection between Harry and Lainie had been explored a bit more though, because I think it was present but took a back seat to the physical. However, I really liked their love scenes anyway, because they always gave so freely of themselves to each other. I thought this showed what great chemistry they had as well as how much they cared for each other even if they weren't ready to admit it. In my opinion, the sexual tension in the early part of the story could have used a little more subtlety. Based on the two books I've read by her, Vicki Lewis Thompson seems to have a tendency to hit the reader over the head with it rather than giving it more nuance. Also, during the early part of the story, Harry and Lainie repeatedly went back and forth in their minds over whether they could, should or would have sex which became a bit grating. I definitely commend the author for taking the time to write safe sex scenes (a big pet peeve of mine), but the condom countdown (which also happened in Nerd in Shining Armor) was perhaps a bit much. In spite of these last couple of issues though, I thought that Harry and Lainie were a very well-matched and appealing couple.
The Nerd Who Loved Me had a broad and fun palette of supporting characters. Harry's mom, Rona, is an ex-showgirl with a penchant for matchmaking and a burning desire to be a grandma. Her long-time boyfriend, Leo, has a bad-boy persona (everyone thinks he may be a mafia boss), but Rona has him totally wrapped around her little finger. Rona's friends, all of whom are ex-showgirls who've dubbed themselves the TITS (you'll have to read it to understand), are a hoot. Even Rona's little dog, Fred, gets into the act. Dudley, a kind-of jack-of-all-trades at the resort, was an interesting mix of annoying when in salesman mode, and somewhat endearing when he's helping to save the day. Lainie's little boy, Dexter, is as cute as a button and pretty much how I would expect a precocious four-year-old to be. Lainie's ex, Joey, is a total jerk of a villain, who much to my amusement, got taken down a couple of pegs in a rather mad-cap finale.
The Nerd Who Loved Me started out at a pretty snappy pace, but got a bit sluggish through the middle sections. I think there was a little too much padding in both the dialog and narrative, but it did ramp back up somewhat for a fun and satisfying ending. Overall, it was an enjoyable read that I would recommend to anyone who is looking for a light, easy romance with entertaining, likable characters. The Nerd Who Loved Me is book #2 in the Nerd series, but it is my understanding that there are no interconnected plots or characters within the books, only the nerd theme, so they could easily be read in any order or as stand-alones.
I wanted to like this book. I thought the first one was at least all right so maybe it's me. Maybe I wasn't in the mood for light and fluffy right now? All I know is I got a hundred pages into it and it felt like it was going NOWHERE! Well, the fact that those first hundred pages encompassed a pretty dull 2-3 hours in the lives of Harry and Lainie probably didn't help.
Don't get me wrong - I thought Dexter was fantastic. Harry's Mom? Cute. His Mom's boyfriend? Maybe I'd rather have read about those two. They had more going on than a childish "OMG, I LOVE HIM/HER! But she/he could NEVER feel about me the way I feel about her/him. Even though she/he is looking at me like she/he wants to rip my clothes off right here on the kitchen floor and have her/his way with me beside these awesome homemade cookies!"
Basically? The first hundred pages did nothing to draw me in. I didn't care about the characters. I felt no tension. I felt no conflict. I felt nothing but a growing sense of dread about reading the remaining 300 pages of something I didn't care about when I have a growing to-read pile.
I did, however, learn that a sequined thong can be somewhat uncomfortable after a couple of hours of sitting down.
I just love the Nerds series. Each book has a different Nerd and they are all standalone books. The series has humor, hot sex and lite suspense. Just my kind of book. This time around we have a Nerd accountant and a Las Vegas Showgirl.
Harry has been watching Lainie dance for awhile, always sits in the back and never tries to make contact. He figures he is so far out of her league that he doesn't stand a chance. Even at 6'3" and with a genius IQ he still is insecure. Lainie is also his neighbor and she has a genius 4 year old, Dexter, who comes close to beating Harry at chess, a game Harry just taught him. In order to get to know Lainie better, Harry has agreed to babysit Dexter for a week while her regular babysitter is away. Harry's mom, Rona, wants him to get married and produce grandkids, but he can't seen to find a woman who lights his fire both physically and intellectually.
Lainie is a single mom trying to make ends meet and raise her son to be the man his deadbeat dad, Joey, isn't. She knows that Harry has an interest in her, but has never asked her out. She would have said no, but it would have been nice to be asked. Her life is Dexter and her job, no room for any man.
One night while Harry is watching Dexter, Joey shows up drunk, pounding on the door, breaking in. Harry and Dexter escape and head to Lainie and they all go the Harry's mom's condo. It is agreed that Dexter will stay with Rona and Harry and Lainie will get out of town for awhile. Rona wants Harry and Lainie to have an opportunity to get to know each other better, and they sure do.
The story is a road trip adventure to Sedona, AZ and is filled with colorful characters, humor, romance, hot sex and just enough suspense to make the story worthwhile.
Okay Tammy, this one is for you! (From what I remember of it a long time ago...lol)
Lainie is a Las Vegas Showgirl. She is a single mother who works hard at supporting her son and making ends meet. Having problems finding a sitter for her young son, she enlists her neighbor Harry (the straightlaced accountant) to watch over him. Harry is attacted to Lainie and adores her son, but he is leary of starting anything more than friendship with her because of her job. Harry's mother was a Las Vegas showgirl, so although he was raised around that environment, he does not approve/like it much. When Laine's ex comes calling and causes trouble-Harry, Lainie and her son go on the run. Harry is a nerd who doesn't want to be a nerd. He is smart, handsome, (in the thick glasses-there is a body under that shirt kind of way) and as he spends more time with Lainie and her son wants Laine to see him more than just a brain, but as a protector too. (He does prove it in humorous ways if I recall...but Lainie ALWAYS has things up her shelve too.) He believes that Lainie thinks he is weak and a geek (no pun intended) but, little does he know that Laine is attracted to Harry because of his stability, willingness to help, and his covert sexiness.
The nerd books are pretty good. I have most of them. I liked this one because you do see Harry and Laine becoming more than the sterotypes that people are inclined to see.
Picked this one from the "new" shelf at my local bookstore only because I was bored and the title made me laugh! Afterall I don't read romance novels. I read almost everything else, history, science, SciFi, fantasy, bio etc. But ROMANCE??? Never. But, as I said, the title hooked me. Was I ever surprised when I found out I really liked it! VLT has a great sense of humor. The characters were engaging and the plot was pell-mell and FUN! I have since tracked down most of the author's books and read them as well. Even traded emails with VLT herself. WARNING: these books are "Adult" with several sexual scenes handled with deft touch and a lot of feeling and humor. I can only say that I wish I was the nerd in some of her books.
I have to say, I was happy to finish this book. This book was pretty long to me, 404 pages. To a lot of people, the book wouldn't be long. Anyway, the book was a okay chick-lit book. Harry was sexy to me, even though he wasn't the rock hard, built guy. Muscle doesn't equal sexiness in my eyes. Harry was a sweet guy and he would do anything for the woman that he was falling for. The book had a lot of sex in it, but I am glad that it wasn't detailed sex. For sure, I would have stopped reading the book. I was hoping that the sex would end, so development could occur. I wanted Harry and Lainie to want one another for who they were and not because of sex. Harry would have died for Lainie. He loved her and her son. I have to say that I hated that Lainie didn't want to stop dancing.
Lainie Terrell works as a showgirl to provide for her young son Dexter. One of her neighbors Harry and also an accountant for the same place she works for watches her son occasionally. Lainie's ex and the child's father tries to get Dexter and Harry jumps out the window with Dexter. Lainie and Harry take Dexter to a safe place and then they try to lure Joey away from Dexter by going to a time share resort.
This was an enjoyable read if not very plausible. But that's why its called fiction LOL. It was a good escape from reality.
Lainie is a showgirl with a super-smart 4 year old son, Dexter. Harry is an accountant at the casino where she performs who has a massive crush on her, and happens to live in the same building. He'd do anything for Lainie - including babysit her little boy, who shouldn't be able to kick his butt at chess the way he does.
Then Dexter's dad shows up. He's a billionaire's loser son who wants the family money, but can't get it without proof he can provide an heir. After a case of the mumps, he's impotent... except for a fling years ago, which resulted in a son. He needs that kid to get the money to pay off his gambling debts.
Throw in a passel of retired showgirl grannies, several rattlesnakes, a wrizzled up old cowboy hell-bent on selling timeshares at a woebegone resort that's on it's last leg, and some not-really hit men turned Lainie protectors, and you've got yourself a hilarious, sweet, slightly colorful story.
It's a little risque, but sometimes? You just need that.
I love that this book started with Harry babysitting Dexter and not with how Harry became Dexter's babysitter that fateful night. This is not your typical love story as the events in this book happen in a span of 3-4 days. But I love the longingness in both MCs and how honest Lainie is with her feelings. The way she's describe the details she sees in Harry is so relatable because I also think that way. And I just looooove the characters, except for Joey, of course. It was funny and surely gave me a fair dose of butterflies in my stomach. I didn't expect it to be this spicy but I enjoyed those scenes nonetheless. I like that Harry is not the typical guy who is always projected as a knight in shining armor, but he was true to himself and Lainie understood that very well. This book also educated me what showgirls are and I think many people still misunderstand the job.
All in all I really enjoyed it and it's a perfect 5 stars for me.
This is a really cute story with a predictable, yet satisfying ending. When single mom and Vegas dancer Lainie realizes that her ex, the father of her precocious and lovable son, is attempting to kidnap him for the purpose of personal gain, she does everything she can to stop him, including asking the nerdy but hunky accountant, who just happens to live in her building, to help her. It helps that his mom is an ex-dancer, his mom's man friend is someone who just might be connected to the Mob, and the mom's friends, who call themselves the T.I.T.S. (Temptresses in Temporary Suspension), are willing to do what needs to be done to stop the precious little boy from being taken. This is a laugh-out-loud comedy, just the right thing to provide laughs and an escape from reality when that is what is needed!
I love this entire series and Harry may be my favorite. Sitting in a back corner watching Lainie perform is as close as he expects to ever be until he gets a chance to babysit her son Dexter. Dexter is a little genius much the way Harry was. When Dexters dad becomes a threat Harry goes all out to protect her. If you haven't read the Nerd Series you don't know what you're missing. They are my go to for a fun read to lift my day and put a smile on my face. It's good to laugh out loud.
If you have ever been or are now a nerd (guilty) you will find this story charming, romantic and potentially misty eyed. Even if not this is basically a cozy romance with enough conflicts to add dramatic tension without ever stepping over into real violence or crazy superhuman stunts. I enjoyed it. Blessings, Michael Burgess for Becky Williams
Nerds can sometimes be a knight it battered armor. This is my second Nerds book and I like it, a lot. There's something about the nerdy guys in the two books that's captured my heard. Besides that, I like how the writer inserts a little bit of comedy. Got me chuckling, alright. All in all, it's a good entertainment.
Harry has been helping out his neighbor with some babysitting for her 4 year old son. He is an accountant at the casino where she works as a showgirl. He has a sizable crush on her. When her ex comes looking for her to claim his son for financial reasons, Harry steps in to help. So begins quite an adventure with some interesting side characters. This was pretty predictable but a fun read.
A showgirl, a trying too hard ner, & a genius kid, an ex baby dad that's wants his inheritance based off an heir, a set of colorful grandparents (rona - ex showgirl, Leo, bodyguard business), & a time-share excursion, where more colorful ppl are met (duddley the snake charmer), & apparently you have whatever rom com suspense this was & yeah.... it was a struggle.
This will forever be my comfort read!! I adore the characters and Rona is definitely retirement goals. Harry and Lainie are perfect together and we all love a good HEA. The story has realistic themes and was relatable. Also, I’m definitely obsessed with Sedona now and might want to buy a crappy timeshare with my husband to live out this book 📕
I really enjoyed it. It is a bit of fluff piece in many ways but I couldn't put it down. It's definately not some literary masterpiece but then I don't believe that was the intent when writing it.
I really enjoyed it... A lot. Took me under 24 hours to read. I intend to find the other in her Nerd series :-)
A nerd and a Vegas dancer. What a combo! Definitely a great opposites attract romance. Her ex is trying to get her son as a wild scheme to get his inheritance and they lead him on a goose chase. Sparks fly as they stay in a time share with one bed. I recommend this book.
You'll laugh! You'll worry! You'll root for the underdog! And you WILL LOVE this story! A great read! Funny, fast paced AND you WILL want to beat that scoundrel yourself before it's all over! Thank you for your time, talent AND THE STORY!
This was a fun read, filled with quirky, memorable characters. I admit I really liked Harry, especially when he was with the little boy. He did so much to protect the boy and his mom. It's an adventure story with a lot of fun and a good dose of romance. This is the first I've read by this author, but I will be getting the other "nerd" novels.
This was a cute funny story and I liked the spin on the “hero” male character who is smart and geeky finding love with the girl who is a show girl and single mother. That it takes place in Vegas and an ex boyfriend who of course is part of the plot. It was a nice summer read.
I absolutely loved this book! I laughed so hard when Dexter was asking all the questions, he was such a cute character! I loved Lainie and the beautiful nerdy Harry. He was so cute when was trying to be a hero. Also loved Rona , Leo, and the girls!
