Эмиль Золя везде стремился приложить руку. Ещё полностью не став на путь беллетриста, он трудился в качестве критика литературы и изобразительного искусства. Много позже, когда будет подводиться предварительный итог творческой деятельности, статьи за 1865-67 годы, выходившие сперва в периодических изданиях, а после в виде сборников «Что мне ненавистно» и «Мой салон» будут объедены в единую работу в 1879 году. Не все они доступны русскому читателю, часть из них поэтому придётся упустить из внимания.
