In today’s world where looks is often seen as the answer to everything, I thought it was an interesting premise to see that being beautiful is maybe not all it is cracked up to be . It can come with decided disadvantages as others judge you because of your looks. Gabrielle or Ellie as she is more commonly known except by her fierce and judgemental Aunt Rita knows what it is to come under that judgement. Her missionary parents are overseas and so are mostly off the scene except for in a minor way.

Having found she was too easily getting involved in romantic relationships where someone ends up getting hurt, Ellie vows to have a six month hiatus from dating to work on her relationship with God. But then along comes Nathaniel. Nathaniel has his own issues and secrets he wants to keep hidden, which complicates matters at times.

As you will have probably gathered from this much, this is a Christian romance, something that is not often my usual reading fare. On the whole I liked the two main characters even though at times they needed a good talking to for their childish behaviour. But who among us hasn’t at times? And I liked the setting which varied between rural Australia and Sydney. The dialogue is mostly clever, witty and revealing.

Those who enjoy a light romance but one that encompasses some deeper issues should enjoy this novel. I did. Thanks to the author for my copy to read and review.

This is a good, chunky, contemporary read. I found it interesting that its starting point, in a way, occurs at the spot where many other fiction stories end. After years of estrangement, misunderstanding and the passage of time, the hero and heroine have found each other again. They are mutually interested in pursuing what might have been. That's not a common spot to start. The big feature of this story, though, is the fact that Nick is now a well-known celebrity in both the music industry and on the screen. Both he and Lainey have huge adaptations to make, as they know their relationship can never be quite like it was before. This was written very believably and well. There are even threads left open for a possible sequel. I'd be interested to see whether they can trace the whereabouts of another pivotal character named Liam, who wasn't introduced in this story.

Too Pretty by Andrea Grigg is a beautifully written story about a girl who is too beautiful! Being beautiful causes her all kinds of problems as we discover. The story moves very easily from scene to scene and is a page turner. The heroine and hero of the story are very believable characters. Many unusual and interesting themes have been explored by the Author. I highly recommend it as a book that will be a pleasure to read and will also make you think. The Christian themes are woven in well well.

I knew I was going to love this novel from the very first chapter. I suspect that if Jane Austen had lived in twenty-first century Australia, she might have written stories a bit like Andrea Grigg's. They both use sparkling, witty dialogue and wry observations to bring every character to life, the nice and the nasty. Even the minor characters are fully fleshed out and interesting. And like Austen novels, several significant moments in 'Too Pretty' take place at dances. It begins with a country, CWA party, there's a bush dance part of the way through, and a very formal fundraiser ball toward the end.

The heroine, Ellie Paxton, is stunningly pretty, but experiences misery which normal females wouldn't imagine. Men just value her for her looks, girls are hostile and jealous, and employers don't appreciate the distraction she causes. She's used to being accused of wanting to show other females up just by standing there. Can you imagine being on the verge of feeling sorry for somebody with such a 'problem'? Ellie's best friend, Annabel, pushed me over with her sympathy. 'People don't have a clue what you go through.' Hmmm, okay, it's good to see how the other side live with such drawbacks.

One day, Ellie meets handsome Nathaniel, who is cool and apparently unimpressed by the encounter, unlike most men she's used to facing each day. The parts told from his point of view show us never to assume that we may guess what our more reserved friends are thinking! His back story, revealed gradually, is heart stirring, causing me a few tears. It helps us to forgive his occasional silly-billy moments, especially as many women may imagine him as a young Colin Firth.

Having read several American novels recently, I liked being drawn back into my own country, with its jetties, pavlovas, banged-up old utes and winter in the middle of the year. And like Jane Austen novels, our own brand of Aussie etiquette helps shape the plot. It's a book that can't help us pondering about the insidious nature of the beauty industry. Even though we pretend somebody's looks don't matter, the subject looms huge. And even though it's caused Ellie such hassle, she still wants to apply her make-up carefully and doesn't want Nathaniel (or anyone) to catch her with frizzy hair or sleepy panda eyes.

The lengths she's prepared to take to solve her problem is bound to get a reaction from readers.

Lainey Sullivan is happy with her life as a schoolteacher, going to church and playing at weddings as part of a string quartet. But one wedding changes everything, because the best man is Nick Cusack, and she’s the girl he left behind in his search for pop stardom.

Nick is thrilled to reconnect with Lainey, and can’t believe that a simple mistake like the wrong address has kept them apart for the last ten years. His band, The Mavericks, have reached the peak and he has an emerging acting career. As they begin dating, they both find that all the feelings are still there. And so is the thing that has the potential to part them: Lainey’s Christian faith, and Nick’s unbelief.

A Simple Mistake is the debut novel from Australian author Andrea Griggs. It’s a sweet tale of love lost and love rediscovered, but it’s much more than that. The old saying is that the path of true love never did run smooth, and that is certainly the case for Lainey and Nick. Lainey has a secret that she is afraid will destroy the relationship, and there are other forces that might keep them apart. While A Simple Mistake follows the conventions of the romance genre, it doesn’t do it the easy way. Both Lainey and Nick have a road to travel before then end. They each have decisions to make, decisions that aren’t made overnight.

Australian Christian fiction isn’t quite as sophisticated as American Christian fiction, but that means it has a realism that is often missing in the highly- polished American offerings. And that realism is why I found it so enjoyable.

Lainey and Nick had been friends as children and romantically involved in their early teenage years. But then circumstances intervene and they are parted. Ten years have gone by. Lainey, a school teacher, is a committed Christian but one who guards a secret hardly anyone knows. Nick meanwhile has become celebrity as the lead singer of the Mavericks. His life is one of money, tours and women throwing themselves at him. Their lives could not be further apart. So when they meet up again, even though the strong feelings are still there, Lainey knows realistically it cannot head anywhere because Nick is not a Christian and a guy with no intention of changing.
I really liked the way this novel brought out the vital importance of the bible verse about believers not being yoked with unbelievers. It was brought into play in such a realistic way and didn’t make out that it is easy to abide by such a command from God. It provided insights into the seriousness of the situation. We see the struggle as Lainey is put to the test about how much she trusts God with her life. I also liked the bantering dialogue and sense of playfulness that exists between Lainey and Nick and I liked that Lainey wasn’t one of those girls who is so weight conscious she won’t eat properly. She has a healthy appetite. The misunderstandings that take place at times added to the plot. This is the first book I have read by this author and I thoroughly enjoyed it.

I gave this book three stars only because it (personally) took me a little bit to get into - but persevere! Its a really great romance. What girl can say she hasn't thought about what it's like to end up with a famous actor? For Lainey, this might just happen.(No spoilers)
I couldn't put the second half of this down and I actually giggled out loud at the end. Will definitely be reading more books by Andrea Grigg and will be getting a copy of A Simple Mistake for my shelf.

I enjoyed reading Too Pretty, despite at times wanting to sit down with Ellie, the female lead, to give her some much needed parental guidance. Ellie Paxton is a sleaze magnet. Her natural physical beauty draws a combination of admiration and lustful responses from men, and jealous and downright nasty responses from women and her extended family. Unfortunately her immediate family, including her missionary parents, are overseas and effectively absent from her life. The aunts, cousins and friends in her life inadvertently feed Ellie’s obsession with her appearance by talking about it all the time.

Ellie’s insecure despite being told she’s beautiful and, at the same time, she hates feeling like everyone is judging her by her looks. Her extended family accuse her of being self absorbed, which is a natural consequence of any obsession with self. Ellie has poor boundaries and has a history of falling into a series of unhealthy romantic relationships. She makes a promise to God that she won’t date for six months.

Enter the handsome Nathaniel (Nate), a doctor from a wealthy family who has women tripping over themselves to get his attention. He’s Ellie’s match in the beauty stakes. Nate hates all the female adoration whereas Ellie’s poor self esteem leads her to seek adoration for all the wrong reasons. Nate is the brooding, wounded hero who knows he’s not in the right place to start a relationship with Ellie or any other woman. He tries to deny and hide his attraction to Ellie, which piques her interest because he’s not hitting on her.

Ellie and Nate develop a friendship over six months that’s defined by Ellie’s no dating promise. During the story we discover why Nate is in self-protect mode and hesitant to embark on a serious relationship. His character growth was a highlight of the story and I spent the latter part of the book wondering if Ellie was worthy of him. Could she mature and learn the lesson from Proverbs 31 that true inner beauty is what really matters? When God doesn’t come through for Ellie and answer her prayers, she takes a bold step that backfires on her and threatens her relationship with Nate. I recommend Too Pretty to those looking for a fun, contemporary romance set in Australia.

I received a complimentary copy of the book from the author.

I really enjoyed this book. The cover has a fresh summery appeal to it for starters. This novel showed how one simple error can change the course of a person’s life. But is it for better, or is it for worse? You will have to read it to find out.

The thing that stood out to me most about A Simple Mistake, was Andrea’s portrayal of the Christian walk. It gives an honest view of our daily struggles, temptations and decisions we make based on faith, that aren’t always easy or painless. Andrea showed how God wants to be part of our everyday life, without sounding preachy or pushy.

Aside from this, the storyline was great and kept me up reading past my bedtime for a number of nights. I loved the chemistry between Nick and Lainey, that kept drawing them back together. The romantic side of me was very satisfied. I would recommend this book to anyone who loves a great contemporary romance.

Seriously, how gorgeous is this cover!

Thoughts while reading…
Have you ever made a simple mistake that unfolded to change your circumstances in a huge way? I can’t say I know of any in my life – but reading this novel did make me wonder.

The Bible speaks of it being unwise to enter a marriage if you and your partner are unequally yoked. This is in the way of our spiritual beliefs. A marriage can be very difficult if both wife and husband don’t have the same spiritual beliefs. Did you think about this topic before you were married? If you aren’t married, does it affect who you date?

Andrea Grigg hooked me on page 8 and I could not put the book down! A great read by another new Aussie Author in the Inspirational Fiction genre.

A simple mistake by Andrea Grigg begins with the reunion of two childhood sweethearts, Lainey and Nick, who were separated for ten years by a simple mistake – a muddled address. But much has changed in that ten years. Most significantly Lainey has grown in her faith and become a committed Christian whereas Nick has not. Although he believes there is a God he is unwilling to surrender his life to him.

*Spoiler Alert*

This scenario makes for a very interesting story and Andrea Grigg does a great job of examining the issues of marrying someone who doesn’t share your understanding of faith. I suspect some Christians may not appreciate the fact that it took Lainey six months before she comes to the conclusion she needed to end the relationship. However in the context of the story and their shared history I thought this was acceptable. While the story does have a ‘happily ever after’ ending there are many obstacles and issues to work through in the process. I like the way Nick’s journey to faith is gradual and many people and incidents play a part over a long period of time giving a realistic feel to the story. I also thought the God-incidences were handled well.

Overall a great read.

I was well and truly hooked into this book before I even opened it! What a gorgeous cover!

The two main characters, Nick and Lainey are both so real I felt as if I knew them personally. At times I wanted to shake the pair of them for being so stubborn or obtuse!

After a ten year break, Nick returns to his home town and meets up with Lainey once again. Nick is now famous with an amazing future ahead of him, and Lainey has finally managed to put him behind her, and move on . . . or so she thought. Once they meet up again, it is clear that the chemistry is still active between them, and they are both drawn back toward each other. However there are two major problems.

One is that Nick has turned from the God of his younger days, while Lainey has become a deeply-committed Christian. The other is a secret that Lainey is reluctant to share with Nick. Will their relationship survive these two issues? Is there a future for this couple? You'll need to read this delightful story to find out for yourself.

I bought this book last year when it was first released but hadn't had a chance to read it. It is an interesting read and I did enjoy it. At the same time there were times I found it slow reading and just wanted something to happen. I was knew it would happen and was wishing it to happen sooner. There were also times it moved quickly and as the book moved on the speed picked up. I enjoyed Lainey but had a lot of trouble relating to Nick. I think it was more the fact of his occupation its not a lifestyle I have much knowledge of but was interested in seeing where the story went. I would say for some of my American friends the book is a little edgy with some of the conversations and things that happen although at the same time real to life and while edgy it is still a very clean book, just some may be uncomfortable with some of the dialogue. I did enjoy seeing the struggles Lainey and Nick had to endure and seeing what would happen. I would read more books from the Author.

This is girl meets guy, in this case it's very pretty girl meets very rich doctor. Many envy Ellie for her stunning looks and due to past experiences she is over sensitive to their reactions. She makes a vow to ignore men for three months, but moody, good-looking Nathaniel upsets that resolve. For the next hundred or so pages both characters twist themselves and each other in loops of trying to resist the inevitable.
I found myself turning pages rather fast in the middle as it lacked real conflict. Multiple minor characters were confusing and ill-defined. And I wished the heroine would put more effort into her quest to find work than worry about her looks and what others think of her. When at last she takes an unusual, proactive stand to get a job matters liven up, as the ruse brings tricky consequences.
Thus the ending is engaging, and both parties are shown up for their deceptions.

The dialogue is lively and the setting gives a contemporary inner-city feel.

I really enjoyed reading this fun romance set in Sydney and Gold Coast, Australia. Lainey is an ordinary girl thrown into an extraordinary situation when she reconnects with Nick at a wedding. Nick is a hero to die for and, despite having his pick of gorgeous women, he wants Lainey.

Lainey struggles with her strong feelings for Nick and the knowledge that they would be unequally yoked if they married. We journey with Lainey and Nick as they face a number of obstacles and a big secret from the past. I recommend A Simple Mistake to those looking for a contemporary romance that deals with real issues facing young Christian women today.

This book kept me turning the pages to read the story of Lainey and Nick, separated so many years by a seemingly, "simple" mistake. and yet there are other mistakes perhaps not quite so simple they are in danger of making.
I'd love to read a sequel to this book. Perhaps you too will decide the same.

Two reviews from our CALEB reviewers:

Overall rating: four stars.

(1)
Andrea Grigg's romantic novel A Simple Mistake is a compelling story of the far–reaching effects of a simple mistake.

Lainey Sullivan is emotionally torn by having to choose between of the love of her life, Nick Cusack, and staying true to her Biblical Christianity. Nick and Lainey have shared much since they were 8 years old and when they meet again in their mid–twenties after ten very eventful years the old magic still reigns supreme.

Lainey though is now a committed Christian and a churchgoing primary school teacher while Nick is part of a very successful band. Their lives could not be more different.

This is a gripping book. I read it in one day but did not get to bed until 1.00 a.m. I highly recommend it as light reading from a Christian viewpoint. DS

(2) *spoiler alert*
Nick and Lainey were a pair in their teenage years but lost touch when Nick left to take up a career in music. He did write to Lainey but didn’t get any answers. He thought the relationship was over. Lainey was left thinking he didn’t love her anymore. But it was a very simple mistake that kept them apart, something that could happen to anyone.

When Nick, now a member of the singing group The Mavericks, met Lainey again they discovered that they were still attracted to each other. Nick was ready to throw himself wholeheartedly into the relationship bit Lainey wanted to take it slowly. She knew that Nick was not a born-again Christian; she did not want to sleep with him and she could not bring herself to tell him about their baby, the result of the one and only time they slept together as teenagers. She gave the baby up for adoption.

All these problems made their relationship very difficult indeed, and it took a long time to work everything out to a satisfactory ending.

I really enjoyed this story. The plot is simple but allows for all sorts of twists and turns, and there are many of those. The characters are believable and real—the reader can identify with them. It is good to see what should be a problem for young Christians worked out so thoroughly and realistically in the narrative. LS

Andrea Grigg's A Simple Mistake is a contemporary Christian romance. Lainey encounters her childhood sweetheart and heart throb, Nick Cusack, at the the wedding of her best friend - after 10 years apart due to a simple mistake. Their feelings for each other ignite once again. However, in those ten years since they were an item, Nick has become a very successful musician and movie star while Laniey has a secret which she must summon up the courage to tell Nick. And then there is the matter of difference in faith. Will Lainey and Nick manage to overcome the obstacles and set-backs that threaten to tear them apart?

Andrea Grigg has a lovely writing style, with great snappy dialogue and good characterization. Who could not love Nick - rich, handsome, considerate and loyal while Lainey is spirited and independent. The book has a great start as the two encounter each other at the Wedding and Nick attempts to sweep Lainey off her feet again. To be honest, I did find the first 100 pages after that hard to get into as it seemed that two of the major impediments that keep them apart was dealt with early and easily (on the other hand it wouldn't have worked to string them along for any longer either) - and I did wonder what the rest of the book was going to be about. I also felt that given the doubts that Lainey had concerning reviving her relationship with Nick, she very quickly slipped into a girl-friend/boy-friend relationship which made it harder for both of them later on. However, as Lainey herself says towards the end of the book, she was thinking with her heart not her head (or at least, she wasn't listening to her head).

For me the book really started to take off after page 100 when the couple get into the real issues that could keep them apart - both Lainey's faith and the demands and personalities in Nick's lifestyle. I felt the spiritual issues were dealt with sensitively and that the ending was believable - and very satisfactory. So all-in-all, I'm enjoyed A Simple Mistake and am looking forward to reading Andrea Grigg's next book - Too Pretty.

Too Pretty - Andrea Grigg's second novel - is a Christian inspirational romance in rural NSW and Sydney. Ellie Paxton has a natural beauty which makes her the envy (and at times spite) of many and often draws unwelcome attention from men. She has had a string of short term relationships and has just lost her job as office manager at a boy's school in rural NSW because she is too pretty. Trying to sort herself out, she promises God not to date for 6 months mere days before meeting the very attractive but reserved Nate Watson. Ellie is confused by his studied avoidance of her but puts it out of her mind until circumstances throw them together again after she goes to Sydney to seek a job.

Nate has his own problems - baggage from the past, a difficult relationship with his rich and powerful family. Neither Ellie or Nate are sure if people accept them for who they are or because of surface considerations such as beauty (for Ellie) and wealth (for Nate - though he is rather good looking too). A number of factors conspire to keep Ellie and Nat apart - including a dramatic misunderstanding towards the end of the novel.

Over all, I found the premise interesting, the main characters strong and engaging - with enough flaws to make them interesting - and the dialogue and writing style enjoyable to read with a good dose of humour. I liked the listing of the dates as chapter or section headings as this tied in well with the countdown to the end of Ellie's 6 month promise not to date, though some of the encounters between Ellie and Nate were virtual dates. A couple of times the story seemed to jump too quickly and while the burgeoning romance was sweet, I did sometimes wonder about the momentum of the story in the middle. However, as with A Simple Mistake, I appreciated the spiritual dimension of the book and the focus on friendship and getting to know each other before rushing into a physical relationship. Both Ellie and Nate had issues in their life to work through.

Despite some sagging in the middle, Too Pretty is an enjoyable read.

In a world where importance is placed on fame, fortune, and beauty, being blessed with these qualities should make life easy. Or so we think. But for Ellie Paxton, being beautiful can be a two-edged sword. While it makes some doors open easier for her, she never knows if the people she meets only like her for how she looks, or for who she really is – including fellow
Christians.

Nathaniel, on the other hand, has money problems. Or rather, his problem is with having money. His family name is synonymous with fortune, so it’s easier to go by a pseudonym so no-one knows who he really is. That way, he is accepted for who he is, rather than who he is related to. Ellie struggles to know if Nathaniel loves her for who she is, not just how she looks, while Nathaniel is reluctant to let Ellie know who he really is. Can they have a future together if they can’t get past their own handicaps?

“Too Pretty” takes us behind the scenes of the rich and beautiful, showing us that such qualities don’t necessarily make life easier – just more complicated, and how having good character is far more attractive and of great worth. Filled with an endearing cast of characters and a charming romance, “Too Pretty” will appeal to fans of Becky Wade, Melissa Tagg, Susan May Warren, Beth K. Vogt, and Australia’s own Narelle Atkins.

Ellie is a Christian girl with an unusual problem. She is way too pretty. Girls often dislike her because of how she looks and guys treat her like a piece of meat. She swears off men for six months and vows instead to concentrate on her relationship with God. Then into her life waltzes Nathaniel, a too-handsome very moody guy - her own Mr Darcy.

This is an enjoyable well-written contemporary romance about two interesting and likeable characters. Ellie is all too human despite her goddess looks and is a pleasure to read about, but the interest in this romance mostly comes from Nathaniel. Why does he act the way he does - so indifferent to Ellie?

If you enjoy contemporary romance novels, this is definitely worth reading.

I have to admit I had high expectations after loving Andrea’s first book A Simple Mistake.
Though a great read, this story didn’t grab me the way her first book did. It took me quite a way before I was hooked.
The premise is a worthy storyline - it’s not often that beauty is looked at as a negative and Grigg covers possible challenges the ridiculously beautiful might face.
I did enjoy the tension that came with the self control that the main characters dealt with through this story. In a world of instant gratification, it was very satisfying to read of a couple deciding to wait until they were ready before they even started dating.

I really enjoyed this book. The cover drew me in and I wasn't disappointed. I don't read a lot of Christian romances, but read this with an open mind. It had realistic characters and a plot that made the struggles of relationships and secrets absorbing.

Andrea Grigg's "A Simple Mistake' was a beautiful love story. The characterisation is excellent. Lainey Sullivan and the 'drop dead gorgeous' Nick Cussack have a happily ever after ending but to get there, the story takes you through many a twist and turn. The Christian values running through the book are believable and inspiring. I recommend this book to you.

Gabrielle Paxton is a missionary kid who grew up in Papua New Guinea before returning to Australia when she was fourteen. That was when she discovered people judged her more for her looks—and while that didn’t always work to her advantage, it didn’t make her immune from judging others based on the way they look.

Nathaniel Watson catches her attention immediately, but he’s got that restrained dentist look going on, and she’s not interested in the medical professions. No matter. He doesn’t seem interested in her either, and she’s just decided she’s not going to date for six months:

I want to allow God to fill up those spaces, not boyfriends or even my family.

It seems easy until a chance meeting with an old school friend brings her face to face with Nathaniel …

I couldn’t completely relate to Gabrielle (not being a blonde bombshell myself!), but I could understand her problem and admire the way she decided to seek God first. We live in a society where people judge based on outward appearance, and we all need to learn to allow God to fill that void inside us, rather than relying on a boyfriend, career, or family. What was interesting about Too Pretty was that it wasn’t only Gabrielle who needed to learn this lesson.

Too Pretty is Andrea Grigg’s second novel. I thought the first, A Simple Mistake, was excellent, which made me a little nervous when reading Too Pretty. What if I didn’t like it? But I did. It’s fun and funny and romantic and thought-provoking, with a great set of characters and a strong Christian message. Recommended for fans of contemporary romance from authors like Victoria Bylin, Carla Laureano, Mellissa Tagg and Becky Wade.

Nick and Lainey were childhood sweethearts, but separated due to “a simple mistake”. When they meet up again 10 years later, the sparks still fly. But Nick, now a famous singer and actor, doesn’t know Lainey’s secret. Can they overcome past mistakes, deal with their issues, and make a life together?

This is an interesting debut novel from Australian author Andrea Grigg. I really liked her characterisations, snappy dialogue, and humour. I’ve never heard so many different ways to describe romantic feelings. I think there was even a reference to bone marrow dissolving (can’t find it now). However, there are also some poignant moments that are handled with sensitivity and I really felt for the characters.

There’s a strong Christian theme running through the book. It looks at the consequences of unwise choices and the importance of not being “unequally yoked” with a partner. It should almost be compulsory reading for church youth groups.

My only hesitations are that it was a little predictable at times and I felt some sections were a little drawn out. I thought it took Lainey a little too long to tell Nick her secret and I didn’t think the extra obstacle towards the end was really needed.

However, I did enjoy the book and would be interested to know what happens to the characters next. Although complete in itself, there’s an obvious direction in which a sequel could venture. If you enjoy Christian romance novels, give this one a try. It has a lot to offer.

I enjoyed this book. The vulnerability yet strong personality of the main character elicited sympathy at the same time as respect. Who wouldn't want to be involved with a famous actor? But who has the strength to remember that he is still the boy who caused you so much hurt so many years ago as a teenager? Lainey has become a smart woman filled with strong faith in her God, Nick has become a famous actor who is used to getting his own way. Can they begin again, continue from where they left off, survive Lainey's secret? And what about their parents? The story runs smoothly and the characters are well developed. I enjoyed reading this very much.

This probably deserves a four and a half star rating. In terms of characters, it was excellent. The plot line was good. The romantic tension started early, and kept building. I really liked the personal character flaws and associated issues that Nate and Ellie had to work through individually. The only fault was an excessive amount of typo errors - but typo errors don't affect the story or the enjoyment you will receive, and they are only really annoying to those of us who have to proof read through life. You'll enjoy it. I'd download it now.
