THE REVIEW

Why this book?
I wanted to read more from Cecilia Gray

What I thought

This was a nice little story. I really liked the characters. Just wished it was longer the romance happened way too fast, and it would've been better if the story went a little deeper.

I was traveling and staying in a hotel room and I needed a pick-me-up. I always turn to Cecilia Gray's novellas when I have a short time to read and need something to make me smile.

This is a short, sweet story about two people that don't quite fit in to society for completely different reasons, but by chance are compromised and forced to marry and find that they are perfect for each other. They even have some nerdy moments together :)

I wished this was longer! Each of these characters was very interesting and I wanted to know more! Overall, though, it was a nice read and I closed the story with a smile on my face, exactly as I had hoped.

Another lovely novella in the Gentlemen Next Door series, A Dangerous Expectation was a sweet read. I really liked this light, quick novella, and I really enjoyed it.

Cassandra was a great heroine. She was extremely smart and didn't always say the most appropriate thing, which made her self-conscious in society. But, as the book went on, she became more confident and proved herself as a capable character. Gray was very sweet, but I didn't get a lot from his character, But, I still liked him as well.

The romance was lovely. I liked how Cassandra and Gray helped each other break free of the restrictions they put on themselves. They might have to act in front of society, but they didn't have to act in front of each other.

The plot moved quickly and I was kept interested the entire way through. I enjoyed the story and the ending was great.

A Dangerous Expectation was a sweet, light novella and I enjoyed reading it. Romance lovers, this is a book you'll want to check out if you're in the mood for a quick, enjoyable read.

Another light read, very short. I breezed through it in one sitting and while there were things I liked, I have a feeling the whole story was wildly anachronistic and improbable. I suppose it might have been more credible and worked better had the book been longer.

Review: I enjoyed A Dangerous Expectation, but I felt that there were scenes missing that could have filled in the story a little. It was an emotional tale that captured my heart. I found myself empathizing with Cassandra at first and later empathizing with Gray. They are both broken and in need of healing. This is a story that I think many people can relate to and understand.

Cassandra is more than just a shut-in. She’s become an agoraphobic. It’s sad to find out that she feels such anxiety and terror in social situations that she just shuts down inside. She cares so much for her family that she retreats into herself to prevent anyone from getting mad at her and taking it out on her parents and siblings. That she meets her match in Gray is fantastic since he has his own personal demons to fight. He is also suffering but for a totally different reason, but he sees that she’s broken and immediately makes the decision to help her, not knowing that in the end, he’ll be helping himself as well. He comes to love her for herself and not for who she is or who she is related to.

The couple of scenes that “fade to black”, as I like to call it, are most likely meant to keep within the blush romance standards, but I feel like there could have been just a little more fill or explanation before it just ends and then when we flip the page, a whole new day starts. It made it feel a bit incomplete, like I was wanting more. It didn’t have to break any of the rules of a blush romance, but the way it sharply ended made me flip back to see if I missed something. There were only two of those scenes that I got confused over, so it isn’t enough to detract from the tone of the book. Overall, though, it was a good book and I enjoyed it. I give credit to the author for writing the heroine as an agoraphobic. I don’t remember reading a heroine like that before.

Rating: 2,5 stars

In Victorian London social scene, Cassandra Drummond is the older daughter of an important business man who is a little short on money. Conveniently, the answer to this economic issue stands right next door, in the shape of Gray Abernathy - a man with tawny hair and golden eyes, open and curious and fixed on her – lying on the couch.

Miss Cassandra, will you do me the honor of becoming my wife?

I realize convenience marriages are suppose to happen fast and without the involved ones to know each other very well, but the love plot on this book just happened way too suddendly, with no chemistry between the main characters.

Overall, it became more a short story on politics and financial status of the Drummond family, other than any relationship development.
But I have to say, maybe I would have enjoyed it a little more if I had read the previous books in The Gentlemen Next Door series.

This b00k is a continuation of the Drummond sisters. The baby sister, Cassandra has decided to leave London for the quiet of the country. She has become very popular with the gentlemen since her sister got engaged. The suitor are lining up at the door to pay call to her so they could be the next person to share's in their company. But Cassandra escapes or so she thinks.

Lord Gary Abernathy was disowned by his family when he refused to do as his father wished him to do. So he has been living with friends and so forth. One night changes everything for him for the better or will his father ruin it..

I am loving this series. This series is becoming one of my favorites. I can't wait to read the final book in this series and other books by Cecilia. I highly recommend this book to others to read.

This was probably my favourite novella so far in The Gentlemen Next Door series. This was a really fun read, and although I found the characters to be lacking in realism I still really enjoyed this short story.

I reread this series while I was unwell recently, wanting reads that were angst-free and didn't need much brain power! This is quite a cute series of stories, most of which have young ladies falling in love with either people they've known a long time or literal next door neighbours. You have to suspend your disbelief a bit as events either seem unlikely or not in keeping with the time. Wording is sometimes too modern/not British sounding. However they are quite nice, quick reads. I think the first in the series is the best one.

This installment deals with the sister of the heroine of the second book. This lady likes engineering and has trouble talking to people. This book has a marriage due to a compromise, but it seemed a bit unlikely that you'd need to marry on such a brief time being closed in a room together, particularly in the country when it seems unlikely that there would be any talk. It's an enjoyable enough read though.

Disappointing June 2022

Not in least bit like Georgette Heyer or in her spirit. This is a farce and wholly not Regency, completely wrong in so many ways and totally unrealistic, not even entertaining.

This third installment of the Gentlemen Next Door series was finished in a wink and a blink, but it still packed a good plot and engaging characters into it for all that.

This story is about Cassandra Drummond, the sister of the previous heroine. Cassandra is on the eccentric side so she tries to stay out of the way of popular society while she pounds away at her creative engineering designs for the family company. Unfortunately, the side effect to Chastity's upcoming high society nuptials to her Baron is that now all the society fortune hunters feel the second Drummond heiress is eager to follow her sister down the church aisle. She accepts the hospitality of her future brother in law to stay in his small country home. In fact, she'll go a week early.

Gray can't believe his eyes when he lays eyes on the pretty young lady that just entered the library where he had been lounging on the sofa in a drunken state. She is shocked to see him in disheveled attire, but really he hadn't been expecting the house guest until the following week when he'd have to pack up and move on to clear the way. Gray was a second son with no financial help or support of family and never trained to work so he was now an impoverished professional houseguest living by his charm. He is not proud of his state and knows he must eventually marry an heiress if he is to get on. Oddly, that happens sooner than later when witnesses to the lady standing near him while he is in a state of undress make it clear he must protect her reputation.

The newly married couple must now sort it all out and that is when the real fun begins.

I adored Cassandra and Gray. They were the original geeks it seems with their mutual love of tinkering and invention along with their ease with just saying it like it is around each other. Both feel inadequate. Cassandra sees Gray as Upper Class son of a duke and she, rising from the poor class and unable to behave normal in society. Gray feels he has nothing to offer a beautiful, intelligent woman who is an heiress since his father cut him off. He can only give her the gift of letting her be herself.

Loved this quick shortie of a historical romance that sparkled in spite of the length. I had such a good time that I wish it could have been longer.

My thanks to Net Galley for the opportunity to read this book in exchange for an honest review.

As seen on Ed and Em's Reviews!

If you haven't noticed by now, I love Cecilia Gray and her work.

A Dangerous Expectation is different from its prequels. Partially because things happened very fast in this story. It was strange to me, but it seems very realistic for that time period. It was the perfect beginning for this couple, even if they didn't think so.

Right off the bat, I loved Cassandra Drummond. She's forward, yet innocent and sweet. She reminds me a lot of myself. She's awkward with men and always says what's on her mind. Cassie, as she is affectionately referred to by her sister, hates overwhelming social situations and prefers the quiet countryside. This, too, is much like myself. She's brilliant, scientific and a very curious being. Much different from most heroines that you read about in historical pieces. It was very interesting to read about her.

Grey Abernathy is a great love for Cassie. He understands her and loves her because of her quirks, not in spite of them. He's so sweet and he stands up for what he believes is right. Grey's a great guy, with the best interests at heart. And he's so fiercely protective of Cassandra that it makes me swoon.

The way that Cecilia introduces Grey Abernathy had me giddy and swooning. The picture in my head made me grin like a school girl. Ms. Gray is very good at painting scenes that they are easily pictured in your imagination. That's another thing I love about her stories.

I love how the bond between Cassandra and her sister, Chastity is shown more in this story. They think of each other's needs before their own and anyone else's. It's so sweet and endearing. It makes me wish that I had a relationship like that.

Best lines ever:
"I suppose that now my home is wherever you are."
"One day," he said, "I will be worthy of you."

As stated in my previous review, I love when authors include characters from past books in their present ones. So the fact that there were scene with Chastity and Lucas made me very happy. (Plus Franny and Phillip are mentioned in the story. Not as much as I wanted, but they were still there! Woo-hoo!)

Really short - there was more back story in the blurb on Amazon than in the book!

Cassie (apparently) has a habit of blurting out whatever sarcastic thing she is thinking, especially in front of men. To avoid embarrassing scenes she decides to escape to the country and stay in her soon-to-be brother-in-law's country cottage. However, she leaves a week early not knowing that Gray Abernathy, her brother-in-law's impoverished friend is staying there.

Apparently it only takes 10 minutes for an unmarried woman and a bachelor to be left alone for them to be compromised (even fully dressed) and so they HAVE to get married.

The story tells how the awkward heiress and the impoverished lord fall in love.

Apart from my questions over the "compromised" situation I quite liked this and would have liked it to be a bit longer.

And the award for best intro of two people goes to...

What a bloody brilliant first meeting!!! Cassandra and Gray's coming together was unreal. The chemistry was palpable. I loved it and then some. It certainly put a smile on my face.

With times and attitudes being so prim and proper, I understood the compromising position these two found themselves in initially, but even with that, it was plain to see from the beginning that they belonged together. This couple's story was absolutely lovely.

I loved Cassandra's outspokenness and intelligence. I loved Gray's awareness, sensitivity, quiet strength and humility.

I love the premise of this story! The two main characters end up in a precarious situation and find out that they have more in common that they could ever have imagined! I loved learning more about Cassandra, the sister of Chastity from the previous book in The Gentleman Series. The characters were unique and the story was as well! I loved how things turned out in the end and overall enjoyed every minute of this regency novella! Another great story by Cecilia Gray!

The main female character is nothing like she is suppose to behave. She is cleaver, intelligent, speaks her mind and is a pretty good inventor/architect. Both sisters have a good head for running a large company and are in the mindset to keep it that way. They won't let anyone bully them into something they do not want. Her husband -not by choice- is a son of a Duke yet is poor because he will not heed his father's wishes. He ends up helping as a man about the house and that leads to a good ending.

This was another cute addition to the series, but it had a bit too drastic a change of personality in the MC to bring about the happy ending. Clean read, writing was good, could do with a bit more editing.

Cassandra and Grays story was sweet, but felt imcomplete. This author can make sweet kisses tantalizing. These stories are very clean really. This is not what I enjoy, I can see where others who are offended by more passionate scenes would love these short novellas that are delicate.

This is the novella from the series I liked the most. Even in this short description the characters seemed well-crafted. The end, as usual, is abrupt but not as much as the previous novellas. I would have liked to see this whole series a little longer in length than it really was.
