Five friends continue their desperate search for Princess Sakura's memories, which have been scattered across parallel worlds in the form of magically potent feathers. But this time Syaoran and Sakura are pulled from a tumultuous land where two factions battle over a statue of the God of Calamity - and into the realm of that very divinity! Now they find themselves on one side of a long, bloody conflict between two gods and their minions. Unfortunately the experienced fighters in their band, Fai and Kurogane, seem to be aligned with the opposition. In a war that can be ended only by the death of a god, how can Syaoran and Sakura hope to stay alive?
CLAMP originally began in 1989 as a twelve-member dōjinshi circle, but by 1990, the circle had diminished from twelve to seven. Of the remaining seven, Tamayo Akiyama, Sei Nanao, and Leeza Sei left the group during the production of the RG Veda manga. Other former members of CLAMP also included Soushi Hishika, O-Kyon, Kazue Nakamori, Yuzuru Inoue and Shinya Ōmi. Currently, there are four members in the group.
In 2004, CLAMP's 15th anniversary as a mangaka group, the members changed their names from Nanase Ohkawa, Mokona Apapa, Mick Nekoi, and Satsuki Igarashi to Ageha Ohkawa, Mokona, Tsubaki Nekoi and Satsuki Igarashi (her name is pronounced the same, but written with different characters) respectively. The August 2004 issue of Newtype USA, a magazine specializing in events of the anime and manga subcultures, reported that the members of CLAMP simply wanted to try out new names. In a later interview with Ohkawa, it was revealed that initially Mokona wanted to drop her surname because it sounded too immature for her liking, while Nekoi disliked people commenting that her name was the same as Mick Jagger's. Ohkawa and Igarashi, wanting to go with the flow of Nekoi's and Mokona's name changes, changed their names as well.
In 2006, they made their first USA public debut at Anime Expo in Anaheim, California. They were well received at the convention, with 6,000 fans in attendance at their panel.
After long period of not reading the manga, the story confused me a bit. They are now in Shara country and Syaoran and Sakura separated from Fei and Kurogane. There is a war between clans. There are some bits of information for further volumes' events, also now it is confirmed that Syaoran has a clone. I am all like: wtf happening here? Hope the story make sense in future volumes.

The story of Ashura and Yasha always fascinated me and in this setting especially. The fights were beautifully drawn, as usually, and the cliffhanger ending would have made me want to scream and yell if I hadn't had the next volume in the series at hand already. One of my favorite volumes in the series.
Tsubasa is in a way a love letter to all of CLAMP's other works. I went into this having read almost all - definitely all relevant - series by CLAMP, so I can't say for sure, but I think this series is only half as fun if you haven't read the other works (preferably all). If you enjoy Easter Eggs and cameos, Tsubasa is an absolute treat.
For the longest time, Tsubasa was the longest manga series I owned; anything beyond 10 volumes makes me think twice as I find that most lengthy series just drag unnecessarily. However, it was impossible for me to say no to Tsubasa, Sakura and Syaoran from Cardcaptor Sakura have been long-time favourite manga characters of mine, not to mention that I am generally very fond of CLAMP and all their big and small crossovers. Reading a story that combines almost their entire bibliography and with Sakura and Syaoran as the main characters was too good to say no to. It should also be mentioned that this series is heavily interwoven with xxxHolic's plot and should best be read alongside each other.
This Syaoran and Sakura are not the same from Cardcaptor Sakura (although the original Sakura makes a cameo). In essence, this is a story about travelling between dimensions - the same person can exist in different versions of themselves in different universes. Sakura and Syaoran travel between the different worlds - all very different - and meet characters and elements from all across CLAMP's other works. In fact, some characters appear more than once to highlight how the same being can exist and lead a different life in different worlds. It's really fun to see the characters from other stories living different lives, some are funny and some are bittersweet. CLAMP has killed off a fair amount of its characters in other works so it's nice to see some of them leading happier and peaceful lives.
In addition to meeting a whole lot of known characters, there are also a couple of Tsubasa original characters such as Fay and Kurogane who accompany Sakura and Syaoran on their travels. I've grown to love Fay and Kurogane almost as much as I love the other two - so while Tsubasa is very much a homage to other CLAMP works, it's also a very character-driven story with both Fay and Kurogane having intricate and deep personalities. I also have to express my apologies to Kurogane - I always expected not to like him because I'm not very fond of brawns-over-brains type of characters, but I was very wrong about him; great character, smart as well a strong and just a really great guy.
Being a work of CLAMP, it's almost needless to say that the art is beautiful. That being said, this is more of a shounen-esque series which also shows in the art with the somewhat oddly length limbs and a greater focus on action, weapons and muscles. I prefer shoujo art, but the facial art is much the same as other CLAMP works so I can absolutely live with that.
A downside of Tsubasa is plain and simple that it gets confusing. There are time skips, world switching, doubles across different series (xxxHolic) and rather vague motivations from the villain's side. At some point, I just decided to go with the flow rather than trying to make sense of every detail. There's a bit of a loose end, though I wouldn't exactly call it a band ending either. Now that they are working on a sequel, it'll be interesting to see where things will lead to next.
Either way, an absolute gem if you like CLAMP and crossovers, and Sakura, Syaoran, Fay and Kurogane are just a great team of characters - to be fair, Mokona is as much part of the team and deserves a mention too. Finally, I just love these characters.
Most fans I've spoken to really like this arc, but it was pretty underwhelming in my opinion. A lot of the twists came out of nowhere with very little, if any, build-up, which sucked out any emotional impact the climax may have had. From what I can tell, the Yama/Shura arc serves as foreshadowing for several books down the line, and I think CLAMP may have sacrificed the story aspect just for cryptic dialogue that won't have any pay-off for another four volumes. I love the idea that the group can be split up when being transported to the different worlds, but I definitely wanted to see what Kurogane and Fai were up to in Yama while the kids sat around in Shura. The mystery of where the older duo ended up and whether they would be reunited fell a little flat, with what felt like a rushed conclusion. I wouldn't say it was out of character for Kurogane and Fai to act the way they did, but I would have liked to see a little build-up to the situation. Ashura and Yasha's subplot definitely felt rushed, with a quick "oh but they were in love" ending that had only a few lines of dialogue attributed to it. I like Ashura, but she definitely needed more development. This volume definitely isn't all bad! The art is, as usual, dynamic and fluid, which works great for the battle scenes. CLAMP has definitely improved in this regard since the beginning of Tsubasa. Yuuko working behind the scenes to help the travelers is awesome, as is the stipulation that she has to work through others in order to actually cause any change. We got a look into Fei Wang's motivations and a bit of Syaoran's backstory, but it's difficult to say whether this will pay off in any way within the next few volumes. Also, there were a few translation errors, but I'm just going to have to live with those. I really like the translation team behind Tsubasa, I just wish they'd given everything one more once-over. See you in the next volume!

Separated since arrival, Syaoran & co have to find a way to navigate a country split in two. When a literal splitting of the sky happens, things take a turn for the weird. Trapped in a battle for a castle that grants wishes, Syaoran and Sakura need to figure out both where they've now ended up and if the Fai and Kurogane they're facing are theirs or dopplegangers from this world.
I suspect I would have gotten even more out of this if I was at all familiar with RG Veda. But just having read the Wikipedia summary of that manga, this alternate take on the main characters still struck a cord. Quite the ending there! On to the next volume!
This story is getting more and more amazing. The more that is revealed the more it gets intriguing and exciting. I'm so curious as to why Ashura'ô helped Yuuko change the sequencing of our favourite team's traversing the multiverse. The item she used as payment is quite mysterious, a liquor of eternal youth. The fact the some imprisoned Syaoran look-alike is stirring from slumber and remotely controlling Syaoran's movements is crazy! Can't stop myself from picking up the next volume!

Loved loved loved the King Ashura and King Yasha story. Wish we could've seen more of them and wish Ashura's wish could be granted. Also loved their drawings/design.
Appreciated the introduction of the time travel thing other than the travels through dimensions.
On a side note: how to stop crying every time Sakura (or her body in this case) remember something about Shaoran and you can see his heart aching? 🥺
Mokona has drawn Syaoran and Sakura into a realm where Fai and Kurogane and working for Yasha as he battles Ashura - but when Syaoran jumps into the fight, he finds his friends are unwilling to listen to him! CLAMP brings another action-packed entry that will keep readers guessing with bated breath. Why are Fai and Kurogane acting this way, and how can Syaoran get through to them?

This world is a whole lot more confusing. The scenes are so fast I can barely keep up, also it doesn't have the same dynamic as the last books with the group together. There's a ton I'm trying to grasp... Overall not the best volume but hopefully it gets better.
