Welcome to the Nightlife of the Palmetto City With an Arch-Demon masking itself as a serial killer, a NCIS agent hounding a Navy SEAL for crimes he didn’t commit, a clan of lycanthropes living secretly among the masses, and overseeing it all a congregation of pious vampires believing that they have ‘Divine Right’ over the city, the nights were wild enough. Add in one young woman with special abilities and in possession of a holy relic that threatens the existence of all vampires, and the stage is set for a dangerous mix of action and steamy sex over the course of hot, humid nights in this ‘Holy City’. Jamie Grace wants nothing more than to lead a normal life, but her ability to see a person’s soul through an aura that radiates through every living person makes this wish impossible. Soon after arriving in her new home of Charleston, South Carolina, she encounters what appear to be humans that have no aura. Jamie soon learns that the mysterious creatures are vicars of the Sanctum Damnatus and unfortunately they are as troubled about her existence as she is with theirs. Complications ensue when the vampire that has been sent to kill Jamie falls in love with her. With her would-be assassin turned protector, Jamie finds herself on the run from both the Damnatus and an Arch-Demon from Hell. Tangled with Christian dogma and biblical lore and set in this historic coastal Southern city, Jamie must find out whom she can trust and begin the journey of learning what she truly is in this first novel of the Holy Damned Saga. (Editor’s This novel is attended for an adult audience because of scenes of violence, sexual intercourse, murder, rape and mild bondage.)
Wow, what an excellent book! I'm shocked there aren't more reviews of Grace Through Blood. In Charleston, South Carolina The Holy Damned, or what some would call Vampires, it's an organized religious group that believe their souls have been stripped away so that they can carry out Gods plan. They believe God has given them powers so any task can be completed. That is until a Mortal Woman named Jamie Grace is brought to their attention, no one knows what she is or how she has the power that she does. All they know is, she's a threat and needs to be taken out.
Jamie Grace is new to Charleston, while working in a local bookstore she meets Grant. As their relationship blossoms, and the sexual tension mounts Jamie and Grant are thrown into a world they didn't know existed and as their relationship continues they are forces to share their secrets with one another.
Jamie can see a persons soul through their Aura, when Grant is walking her home one evening from a date they come across a child. This is no ordinary child though, this child has no Aura. Jamie is speechless, she has never encounter a person without an Aura as as time goes on she sees more people just like the little girl. After a horrific night Jamie finds out why and people in their small community start turning up dead.
I highly recommend getting a copy of this book and going on a suspenseful, gruesome journey through the "Holy City" with a Women powerful enough to take out the Holy Damned race. But the question is will she wipe them out or save them....
Wow! What a fantastic book. I just finished this book and already want more of it. The story line is a wonderful one that is very addictive . The characters are all amazing and you get to see their thoughts and it follows several POV. It is very easy to tale who is talking so you don't get confused. Jamie is a very strong character that doesn't give up, even when she is in horrifying situations. Grant is someone you can easily fall in love with. Matt is one of my favorite characters. He may be one of the Damned and does evil things but you can't help but be drawn to him. There is a lot more characters you get to read about that are just as great and cleverly written from their POV.
The book is a great read. It has lots of fight scenes, horror, love and much, much more. The religious parts of the story tie in wonderfully and you don't have to be religious to enjoy it. It really makes the story great telling how the Damned came to be. This is a hard book to review because it is so phenomenal and I don't want to give spoilers. It has the feel of a classic vampire book, something I have missed in newer books. I can easily see it one day becoming a classic. If you get the chance to read it definitely do so. I look forward to reading more from this author.
Personally I would like to thank A. Jay for giving me the opportunity to read this outstanding book with it different spin on vampires. It gave great pleasure to read a book set in my hometown. I loved the history and detailed action within this story. A. Jay I really look forward to your next book. A true fan. For true vampire lovers it is a great read.
Not at all what I imagined when it was recommended to me. I thought it was a regular vampire type story. I don't want to spoil it but I'll just say, it's not what you expect, it's way better than any other of its genre. Great story telling from this author
Well, this took me a while to finish since I had the Kindle edition on my phone and only got to it when I had some rare downtime with my phone. I will try and not add any spoilers to this review, nor will I try and retell the story. I am also not an easy critic with most books I really like only getting four stars. The important first item to cover here is that I liked the book and plan to buy the sequel when it is available, so please keep that in mind when reading this. I tend to read a lot of books across a wide spectrum of genres so it is nice when I occasionally find something a little different than I normally expect. In this case, Mr. Lee has provided a story about Vampires that offers some interesting new twists on the old idea. The good news is that he has not gone and made something I can’t stand like sparkly vampires, but he has tried to do a little reinventing of the vampire’s past and added a religious element to them that helps make them different from the norm. Even this is not a brand new concept since I can recall some similar themes many years ago when the Gabriel Knight 3 video game came out and provided a great vampire story with a lot of ties to history, especially the Knights Templar. While the book deals with the main themes found in most current Urban Fantasy, vampires, were creatures, ghosts, daemons etc., Mr. Lee does a good job of trying to find new ways to portray them and to add his own spin. For the most part it works well, especially for a first novel.
Now, the issues I think could use a little improvement. The main one is that in my humble opinion the book takes its self a little too seriously. Some of the best writers in the Urban Fantasy genre such as Sam Butcher, Kim Harrison, Karen Chance, and Faith Hunter try and add some humor or a little self-deprecation to make their heroes and heroines seems a little more human and less perfect. I think this is one of those areas where Mr. Lee will hopefully grow with future books. I think that while the characters have backgrounds, they still need a little more personality to help carry them and the story along and to get the reader more interested in them as people. There was a good start here, but room for improvement. Another issue I have is that many aspects of the plot were rather transparent. I think that I was hoping for more plot twists that were not as easy to foresee if you pay attention. The ending also felt a little weak and expected. Still not a major drawback, but could be improved with more writing. Finally, I did not feel that the various sex scenes in the story were needed, or at least not in the detail found here. Having read enough of the Urban Fantasy genre, often written by female writers, there is a tendency to have a romantic aspect to the stories that occasionally crosses over into almost erotic writing, but in the cases where is goes a little far still fit ok with the writing style. In this cases, the romantic sections were too graphic in my opinion for the rest of the book and especially for the characters involved in them, so I just felt they were a little too over the top with a tacked on feeling. Maybe this was to try and reach more of the romance reader, but I think the characters would have been better served with a simpler and more tasteful account of their romantic interludes.
All that said, I did enjoy the book and really hope that Mr. Lee’s next installment is at least as good as this one and it would be fantastic if he shows some more growth as a writer and takes it up a notch. Looking forward to the book appearing in the Kindle bookstore soon!
A good read that incorporates love, vampires, shape shifters, biblical lore and possibly magic! I very much enjoyed the mixture, how one intermingled with the other, and helped explain how the different species work in this series. Jamie is a young woman who just lost her beloved mother to cancer. To get a fresh start she moves to Charleston and finds a couple random jobs. She was a teacher and decided to take a break from that as well. She also can see a person's aura, which shows their attitude and is a link to a person's soul. Grant is a Navy SEAL. After he loses his 3 fire team members and fiancé to random deaths in a short period he is stationed at the Citadel in Charleston teaching ROTC while the deaths are investigated. Gui Bourg is the Prince of Charles Town, aka the Grand Master of the damned in the Charleston area. The damned are the vampires with faith. Even though many of their brethren are like the myths and drink blood with no mercy, these vampires believed they are damned by God. This may seem that they are mad at God, but actually they believe that they sinned so greatly in their human life they would end up in hell. The only way to possibly gain entrance into heaven would be to walk as a Damned without a soul to carry out Gods less humane acts. They do not kill unless it is for Gods will (evil humans/demons) or to save their identity as secret. Dan Hopson is a detective of the Charleston Police Department, is assigned to a case of a serial killer who is nicknamed Dracula in the press. McQuay is the King of the Weres (there name for shapeshifters), makes his home on the outskirts of Charleston. Matthew Loftis is the Grand Master’s Paladin. He is at his disposal to clean up messes done by the damned to cover up their identity. Dayir Noyan is a soul who was killed hundreds of years ago and then released back into this world. Since he was an evil sorcerer in his first life he was sent to hell. After coming back to this earth his powers were intensified and due to his time in hell he is now a full-fledged demon out for revenge and to take over Earth. The fun part is now learning how all these characters eventually all tie together in a great meeting in Charleston! Each one seems like a great candidate for a main character. In a sense they all actually are in this book. In the end the main character is Jamie. This seems like a lot but A. Jay Lee did a great job in making it work. For a down fall in this book the beginning few chapters seemed a bit much, especially with every couple sections switching characters. Overall it worked, the story had me at the beginning and was interesting all the way through. Just it was hard to keep everyone straight at first, but that I guess can be part of the fun too. The little bit of frustration at the beginning did let me end a chapter and put it down to do other things. As soon as I got a third of the way in I didn’t want to put it down, even on my Saturday morning off I woke up just to pick up the book half way done and read till the end (which I probably should have got some errands/chores done, but this was much better). Without ruining anything the book left me with a few big questions about who or what people are, and why are certain people connected, but that is a great thing for a starter in a series because it definitely wants me to read the second book. Don’t worry too much about unanswered questions because most are answered at books end.
Originality is something all readers want. We crave it. We need something to spark our imagination and get us to thinking about...what if? Yes we love the romantic vampire, the one that has waited all his elongated, blood gorged life for his one true love to come back and show him that his life does not wallow in the darkness. But this isn't one of those books. These vampires or Damned as they like to be referred to, have a purpose and are loyal to their cause. But one woman upsets their way of live. One seemingly normal human turns this order that has been around for decades right on it's head and she doesn't even realise why.
Jamie Grace is your normal starting over after her life has been shattered story. She had always wanted to teach, it was her dream, but she ended up putting her life on the back-burner when her mom got sick. It was very aggressive cancer and in a matter of months, her mother was gone. Devastated, she packed up what was left of her belongings and just started driving. She had no friends and very little money but she ended up in Charleston. She had a few hurdles to overcome, but she settled into her new home rather nicely, and took a part time at a book store. She set her life on a schedule and didn't often deviate. She had only been serious with one other man and that had ended disastrously. After she started teaching, she pushed men further to the side and when her mom became ill, out of her head altogether. After settling in this sleepy little town, there was one man who had caught her fancy. He came in one a week and she had subtly flirted with him, but he seemed unable to take a hint. She really wanted to go out with him and found a way to trap him into a date...literally. But Jamie had a secret. She could see auras. You wouldn't think that was such a big deal. So she sees the color patterns to one's soul. But what happens when you meet someone with no aura?
I could go on and on about this book. It has an array of main characters, but the book is mostly focused on Jamie. She is the key to the whole story. I was truly blown away by the creativity in this author's fantastic invention. The religious background and research that had to go into this book is staggering. I was quite moved. I thoroughly enjoyed the book although several questions remained unanswered, and leave me yearning to read the next part. This truly was a fantastic read!!
3.5 Grace Through Blood had a really interesting premise in which vampires fill a specific role in God's divine plan for the salvation of mankind. That's all well and good. Here's the thing for me though. There is a difference between using the Cristian mythology as plot material, and actual religious fiction. Dan Brown writes mysteries using Biblical material, but I don't think many people would call his work 'religious.' I quite enjoy one, but not the other.
Unfortunately for me, Grace Through Blood turned out to be Cristian fiction, which I can't say I was expecting. That left me cold. I just don't enjoy being preached to in the books I read for fun. I realise some people will think this is a ringing endorsement for the book. There is a large Christian market out there. I'm just not part of it. I finished the book though. And when God wasn't saving the pure souls of those who called on him in blatant scenes of proselytism it was pretty good.
It did tend to drag a bit and felt a little too long. I think the sex scenes could have been nixed to address this. This would have tightened the narrative up a bit and shortened the novel as a whole. But they also just felt out of place IMO. I read a decent amount of sexy PNR. I even enjoy the occasional spot of erotica now and again, so I have no problem with sex in my fiction. However, in this particular case I don't think it contributed to the plot, was contrary to the tone of the rest of the novel and therefore distracting.
I assume there is more to come in this series as a number of heavy hints were dropped about the lineage of both Jamie and Grant, but no answers provided. I kind of wanted to scream about that, but oh well. If you enjoy vampires and christian fiction this is an interesting blending of the two. Lee does a good job of turning a number of Biblical passages to support the new vampire mythos and the writing itself is pretty good. I just probably wouldn't have picked it up in the first place if I had a better understanding of what type of book it is.
Jamie Grace always new that she was different because she could see the aura’s of everyone. She could tell their feelings, their moods and even if they were lying but when she came across a young girl with no aura, she knew that the girl was different than anyone that she had ever met. It left her speechless and with tons of questions but she never would have been able to guess what that little was and how much her life was about to change.
This book was amazing! It gives a whole other view on vampires and this one is completely different than any that I have ever read. In this book vampires are called the Holy Damned. They believe that God has given them powers to serve him and that they must pay for their sins by carrying out God’s plan. They pray to God, are not harmed by crosses or other religious items and even quote scriptures from the Bible. When a demon comes to Charleston and starts killing off humans, it poses a problem for the Damned since the demon is draining the blood from its victims before ripping them to shreds. The demon is in Charleston for one main purpose and that is to kill Grant who just so happens to be Jamie’s new boyfriend. Without going into any more detail so that I do not ruin the plot for you, let’s just say that this book is well worth the time that it takes to read it and that I highly recommend it BUT I will warn you that it will leave you with questions, as well as a few complaints but it is not the end at least that’s what the end of the book says. I can’t help but to wonder if it is though since the book was written in 2012. Even with that in mind, it’s still a five start read in my opinion and it there is a HEA so well taking the risk.
Ranging from secret chapels of ancient France to high-tech military establishments in the modern world, but centered firmly in Charleston, A. J. Lee’s Grace Through Blood combines multiple storylines into an interestingly different mythology of death, demons and hell. Biblical quotes are sprinkled throughout, well chosen for story content rather than spirituality. But there’s definitely a spiritual element to this novel. While faith reminds a fairly distant background element until halfway through, it’s clearly important to the characters and the resolution.
Vampires, auras, the Bible, good and evil, faith, duty, sexuality and more—it’s a heady, sometimes slightly awkward mix. The story’s long, with so many threads to be followed, and it’s slowed by occasional editing glitches (at least in the copy I read). But it’s certainly interesting. The dialog has a convincing southern shape (to this non-southerner). The military are convincingly addicted to force. And the ancient ones, trying to fulfill their likewise ancient destiny, certainly offer an interesting twist on a well-known theme.
If you like vampire stories, Christian fiction, and long complex tales, this might be the one for you.

Author A. Jay Lee weaves an interesting tale of souls gifted, troubled, and damned. Jamie Grace is a sweet Christian girl with a gifted soul – she can read the auras of others. She moves to Charleston to start a new life, but there are more changes in store for her than just the scenery. Enter a man with a troubled soul, Grant Waggner, the Navy Seal who had served in Afghanistan and brought home with him more than bodily scars. Add to the mix to create a complicated love triangle, Matthew Loftis, another man with a troubled soul, but only after his encounter with Jamie Grace. Matt also belongs to those of the Damned, the soulless creatures of the night led by their Dark Prince, Gui. The Damned are supposedly on a mission to do God’s work, but time changes everything and everyone.
The idea of pious vampires with a divine purpose? How unique and intriguing! The concept alone drew me into this fascinating paranormal tale. A. Jay Lee does a great job of creating a strong foundation for Grace Through Blood by providing captivating backstories. Immediately invested in the main characters, Gui, Jamie and Grant, I couldn't wait to discover how their lives would intertwine. Action, mystery, romance - this novel has it all. And the cliffhanger ending will leave you eager for the next installment in The Holy Damned saga. Bravo, Mr. Lee! What a brilliant debut!
Due to academic overload at my University I cannot sit down and write this review at this moment. I'm on a trimester program and we are 3 weeks away from ending this trimester (and 4 from beginning the next one). Once I'm done with all the classes I promise, the review will come.
