Pursuit of Proverbs 31

Rate this book
If you’ve ever wanted to tear the 31st chapter of Proverbs out of your bible this book is for you.

She is a wife, mom, business owner, seamstress, she serves the needy, speaks life and wisdom, and seems to be a major overachiever, perfectionist type.

Except that…she’s not.

Come along and journey with Amy and take a look at the real woman of Proverbs 31. She isn’t as perfect as she seems. In fact, I think she is a lot like you and me.

In Pursuit of Proverbs 31, Amy Bayliss gives you a biblical view of the scriptures that are found tucked away at the end of the book of wisdom. With Southern charm and raw, real emotions she’ll tug at the core of your being. She’ll give you a new perspective and inspire you to pursue Proverbs 31; she’ll inspire you to pursue Jesus.

My Review for Pursuit of Proverbs 31 by Amy Bayliss is as much as a surprise to me as it may be to you! I will admit… When going through the review requests for CWA… I skipped over this one…. Three times!

My Internal Dialogue voiced concern! Seriously? The Proverbs 31 Woman? Hasn’t this been overdone enough to know that it can’t just be done? It’s a lofty goal… Idealism at best. I did not need to be reminded about what I could not do. Nothing has fed my “not good enough” complex more than Proverbs 31. I actually told someone once when they told me to turn and read something from Proverbs 31 that my Bible only went to Proverbs 30.

So, I signed up to review this book. The voices in my head were all in unison (which is rare): “Tsk tsk tsk! Silly girl!”

The first thing about reading this book that jumped out at me was that the author got real in a hurry… Sharing her own struggles with this passage among other things.

If you are looking for an in depth Bible study that is well guided from cross references to taking it off of the pages and plopping it right down into the middle of your real life, then this book is for you. I wish I had time to go through it more in depth right now. I have scheduled it for early 2013 for a more on depth journey and personal study. Who knows I may lead an online group through this study if there’s enough interest. That is how much value I believe this book holds. (If you are interested in participating, please let me know!)

What I really love about this book is its constructs. I rave about a totally unrelated book which I reviewed on my positivity blog because of its nuts and bolts step by step get ‘er done processes. And this book boasts the same sort of construct. Breaks a part all of those challenging aspects and fears of the Proverbs 31 woman …. Puts it into our every day context… Make it applicable… And dare I say, attainable…. And this author has amazing Bible study leadership skills. I’d love to sit in on a class of hers some time.

Drawbacks

Other than choosing a subject she should have Trojan horses the title to keep those like me who wanted to run away and tried,,, three times… She had some Scriptural interpretation that I personally didn’t agree with in her cross referencing. She often lost me going from one scripture to another when my personal preference is just stay in the context. I also just want to allow the Spirit to do its job to interpret and make sure the original meanings, words and intent are included in that. Original word studies and leaps to other unrelated Scriptures Tend to bog down the information process.

I am sure when I go back to this to do a more in depth study and take the time to get thru it and savor it, the drawbacks won’t be such drawbacks.

This would make for an awesome, refreshing study for a ladies Bible class! I can’t think of any study I have ever been a part of that would be better than this. And if you are looking for a great personal Bible study or to overcome your fear or intimidation of the ever-elusive Proverbs 31 woman… By all means, do yourself and your family a favor and take on this book!

You know the woman – all Christian women want to be like her but yet can’t achieve it? The Proverbs 31 woman. Her. Many books have been written on her, sermons have expounded and extolled her virtues – making many of us ladies who just don’t measure up to her feel guilty and less than. When I rededicated my life to Christ, I fell in love with the idea of being the Proverbs 31 woman – the idea of waking every morning before my family making a hearty and healthy breakfast, making all our clothing, well I failed, miserably.

In Amy’s book she helps us ladies see that God didn’t put the Proverbs 31 lady in the Bible to make us feel bad or unworthy – she is what we can aspire to but He knows that none of us will measure up. Some say this was a poem written by Solomon’s mom in what she wanted him to have in a wife, there are speculations this woman didn’t even exist – and here we are trying to emulate her? I still sleep in, sometimes even my husband is gone before I rise, I’m a full time mom, homemaker, wife and homeschooler – I’m tired.

Amy has several ways she recommends we use this book – just read it all the way through then pray over what sections you need to focus on, go in order forming a small group to study with and be held accountable – or how you see fit. As you read each chapter it’s assignments are divided into essential, useful and bonus which will help you in tailoring what you are able to do, and this may vary from week to week or even day to day. First and foremost begin the study with prayer – the chapters end with focused thoughts about what was just read, memory Scripture, then the assignments of which you decide based on the Spirit’s leading to complete.

If you’re a woman who struggles with what the world wants versus what you know what the Lord wants from you, this is a great way to begin delving into that search and gaining from Scripture what the Lord wants from you as His daughter, His princess. Regardless, if you can’t sew at all, if you like to sleep in, and you can’t go out a buy a field, the Lord still loves you, your husband can still call you blessed. This study will make you feel good about where the Lord has put you and with the gifts He’s bestowed upon you, whatever they may be.

So I was goin to originally give this book a 4 star rating just because I had a bit of trouble with some of the questions at the end of some of the chapters and it really is a great book for like a reading group but a bit harder for just personal reading. Then I got to the last chapter and WOW really blew me away, soo good and I really do love how Amy writes as if she is just talking to you like you are one of her good friends and I just loved that. She seems like a very down to earth person and wrote in a way that was really fun and easy to understand. Will be looking into more from her for sure!

Beautiful read

I think I highlighted more than half of this book. If you're struggling with the ideals of perfection and wife/motherhood, I cannot recommend this book enough.

My Review:
Upon receiving this excellent study book, I was also studying some other subjects. Needless to say those were laid aside until this one was done.

Even though my children are grown, my grandchildren are not. I would love for every young, old and inbetween mother, grandmother, aunt, sister and so on, would read this book and study out the whole book of Proverbs actually. But the 31st chapter is concerning more to this book.

I do not want to get into this awesome study. Author Amy Bayliss has put together one tremendous book of resources.

A must read. I am so glad I have an e-book copy.

So due to the above I am giving this book a Breath of Life Rating of:

Five Clock Rating!!!

This was a fun, good read. It felt like being in a bible group with some wonderful and friendly women. Another person had commented it was good, but not as good as the Good Wife's Guide and I have to second this. As much as I really did like this book, GWG was still better.

An excellent and encouraging study for Christian wives and mothers. It's written honestly, humbly and challenging all at the same time.
