This comprehensive history of the IRB offers a new interpretation of the Irish revolution of 1913-22 in the light of the previous sixty years of republican activity. It highlights the importance of the organization during the Parnell era, and shows how the period between the Land League and the formation of Sinn Fein was not only pivotal in the IRB's career, but also formed the basis for most of the cultural and political divisions that have affected the island of Ireland from 1916 down to our own day.
