Alice Hughes lies on her bedroom floor, beaten and bleeding. Mostly though, she’s afraid. Afraid that the next time her husband hits her, he won’t stop until she’s dead.
She has to get away. But where can she go? She needs somewhere to hide…
When Alice finds the perfect hiding place, the one place her husband would never dream of looking for her, she thinks all her prayers have been answered. Here she can rest, recover, and when she’s stronger, she can make plans.
But there is something she needs to remember. Something that happened long ago and is bleeding through into the present and threatening Alice's future.
Even when the lovely, aptly named Hope comes into Alice's life, there is something dark reaching out from the shadows, its nightmare fingers grasping after her.
Because what Alice doesn’t know, is that no hiding place is completely safe, and sometimes your worst enemies aren’t the ones you thought they were.
After all, there’s no hiding from yourself.

Battered and bruised, Alice Hughes simply has to find a way to get out of the abusive marriage she is in. She knows it’s only a matter of time, not if, but when her husband Richard will end up killing her.

After a particularly bad beating, Alice hits upon the perfect plan. She will leave Richard. But she’s not going to move out. Oh no, it’s her house, she will simply stay in it and remain hidden. This will give her body the time it needs to heal and also the time to think about her next step towards ridding herself of Richard for good.

Unfortunately happenings of long past from her youth interfere with Alice’s present. Alice gets to the point where she wonders which is worse, Richard or the unknown. Who or what is haunting Alice? Is it real or imagined? Or is Alice going mad?

Things come to a head when Richard discovers Alice’s hiding place. An ugly confrontation occurs and Alice ends up in the hospital. Her life is changed for ever.

It’s here that Alice eventually finds the love she needs and deserves. But before there can be a happy ever after, Alice has to confront her past. Will Alice be strong enough to rid herself of her demons once and for all? Will Alice’s house be safe to live in again?

Right from the very first opening lines of this book, I was hooked. I knew I would love the book by the end of the first chapter.

The book is well written and the story flows like an endless stream, on and on until the end. I was so sorry to reach the end too.

At first the book seemed to be quite straight forward. Solely about a down trodden, abused woman, who was on the verge of collapse from all the beatings she’d received. But the book goes far beyond the subject of abuse. This is also a supernatural, paranormal, edge of the seat, spine tingling story. The book is intense, intriguing and scary, a page turner from start to finish.

Apart from the horror, there is the love and intimacy between Alice and Hope. After all Alice has been thorough, it is so nice to see how Alice embraces her new love. Kate Genet has really excelled herself with her portrayal of the love shared between these two women.

This is one book I am so glad I’ve read. This is a very definite re-read for me.

** Spoilers **

An interesting book (aka as Catch Me) that covers quite a range of different genres. It starts out as psychological thriller about a man (Richard) who is violently abusing his wife (Alice) on a regular basis. Eventually fearing for he life she plans to go into hiding. The attic of her old family house (where she and her husband live) is set up as a kind of ‘granny flat’ with it’s own sink, cooker toilet etc. is her chosen hiding place. Convinced that he husband knows nothing of the attic room she means to stay up there until her recent wounds heal and then she can plan how to separate herself from her husband.
What happens next is more haunted house than psychological thriller, whilst hiding in the attic strange things begin to happen. Furniture gets thrown around, mirrors get broken things get smashed up etc. Alice finds bite marks on her that have appeared overnight and one she appears to have painted in her sleep. All of this triggers childhood memories of her being discovered in bed with the girl from next door. No attempt is made to understand what was happening, only blame and the forbidding of the girls to ever see each other again.
Things come to a head when Richard finds her hiding place and the abuse begins again, this time Alice fights back, and Richard ends up dead. Slowly recovering in hospital she meets the granddaughter of a fellow patient (Hope). Released from hospital see stays with Hope until her house is cleaned. When their friendship becomes more physical the house once again becomes violent and the women are forced to flee. Can Alice and Hope find the cause of these unnatural happenings before even more people die?
The story moves along a reasonably pace and there is good tension built up when Alice is hiding from Richard. The characters a quite well drawn and develop well through the story. The only thing I found a bit hard to swallow was the ease in which Alice takes to Hope, trusts her and takes her into her confidence. I would have thought that after the way that Richard had her dominated that trust would have been is very short supply.
The jury is out on whether I read more of Kate Genet.

I've had this book in my "to be read" list for awhile, but I wish I would have read it sooner. It drew me in from the start, filled with suspense and twists, I had a really hard time putting it down. There is a little graphic content with the abuse, but I feel it has to be there to get the vividness of the story. It has just a few editing errors, but when I like a book I'm reading, it doesn't bother me.

I really like the whole book until I got to the end. I felt like maybe the author struggle to find a ending that fitted the rest of the book. If i the ending had been as good as the rest of the movie then I would had given it another star.
